In this episode I'm exploring in China with Robin and Charles.
This time we visit an abandoned movieset which got built especially for the Chinese movie 'The 800'.
The movie is about a famous WWII event in Shanghai in 1937, which is not really known in the West.
Most European think WWII started when the Germans invaded Poland, but in 1937 some major events of WWII already took place in China when the Japanese invaded China. The most bizarre fact about this event is that only 60 meters from the fighting, people from the protected concession zone could see the war playes out before their eyes like a bizarre event.

It's difficult to wrap my mind around such a massive and intricate movie prop. I agree with a previous post, they should give tours, it would be a money maker. Thanks for sharing this place and the history of the events.
Thanks for watching! Perhaps one day! I know in other countries they do this :)
The 800 was a great movie. During the production, the current communist PRC government had a problem with a scene of raising the flag of Republic of China (which is the government in Taiwan today). But that was a significant event of the battle. Eventually, that scene was reduced to minimum. But it caused much delay to be released.
of course they would.. any country would.. even more so in an important scene like the one shown in the movie.. same thing would happen to confederate flag in the US.. i bet it would be ok to depict it falling in any country but not if the movie depicting it standing on the ground like that..
@@wymmyw8744somewhat agree. However, there is another aspect to this story: the uses of Confederate Flag in official settings by Southern States were, for at least a century after the Civil War, tolerated by the federal government as a sign of reconciliation. US military bases were named after Confederate generals. National guard units from Southern States proudly presented themselves as former Confederate units and put their Civil War battle streamers on their flags. Chinese traditions, on the other hand, tend to justify the legitimacy of the current dynasty by demonizing the previous one.
it seems like this movie set was built better than the new high rises being built in some of the ghost cities. Thanks Bob for another great adventure.
At least the architecture of the buildings are much cooler. Really loved this style. Thanks for always checking out :)
That was my exact first thought. It's mindblowing.
Great video Bob really enjoyed this 👍 thanks for sharing 👍 amazing that they built all that just for a movie , and even weirder that there was war one side and life goes on on the side , brilliant video, very sad though really xx
HILARIOUS watching them pretend to sneak around.
Stunning! One of my favorite videos of yours.
Great explore, thanks for sharing.
Wow another fantastic place! Thanks for sharing with us, fits perfectly on Sunday 🤩
Wow!! Great explore Bob what an interesting place!! 😮😮😮😮😮😮
Solid video! Interesting history, amazing location, nice music, and good company 👍
Interesting video, so interesting that I had to watch the movie right after, good job👍🏻
Wow, what a unique experience! I never thought about movie sets in other countries! 🎬🎥 I appreciate you sharing this and I hope you are doing well💜
Thanks a lot Brenda :) All good here! Looking into future trips atm. Hope you had a good trip to Texas!
@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath Thank you!
Awesome tour guide. Thanks for another awesome video! ❤
Thanks again for checking! Amazing episodes coming up😎
This is truly one of a kind
It was a special one indeed! Thanks for checking out😎
One of the most fascinating experience you provided to me!
I follow you for years! But this one...
Glad you liked it! Some other highlights coming up😄
Amazing as always Bob
What an amazing film set, so much work went into the architecture, very realistic!
Thanks Bob 😎👍
This is really a surprise to me. Since China's entertainment industry loves making "sci-fi" WW2 productions. This is really a great movieset for such propose. But I am glad the owner of this place did not make it available for such propose. Those "sci-fi anti Japanese" TV shows were of so low quality that serious researchers and last remaining WW2 veterans condemned.
The United States can make sci-fi anti-German superhero dramas. It's more exaggerated and unrealistic than the shows made in China.
That's a pretty comprehensive movie set! Used to UE years ago and really enjoy your videos 👍 my favorite explore was a closed mental hospital just west of Detroit MI. Sadly it's gone now but I have 600+ photos to remember it by👊
Another good video, looks like you enjoy what you do. Looks exciting and fun. I also enjoy you research what went on or what happened. I'm a fan thank you
Beautiful set, interesting war story.
Can't wait!!
Thanks for checking out!😄
Totally amazing location, such a shame to see it just rotting away 😢
Epic!! Thanks Bob wow
Thanks for the video.
for a movie set the sets are well built, very durable, would be a good Investment to transform it in a theme park 💰🎞
Good idea💡😊
I watch this movie..epic af...i didnt know it was all set. damnn.
Crazy right? I loved the movie too!
I can't stand all those buildings beeing unused and decaying over time. Why ?...
Because it's build all just for show... as fast and cheap as possible, those buildings are not designed to house people in them so they are useless... But i understand your opinion about it, its just a waste of land and lot's off money... in my eyes a gov only should give permission on term's so it's useable when they are done, but ye it's the money that matters nothing more, it's crazy that this is even legal, they just filmed the movie earned there profit, and took there expensive film gear and just abandoned it to letting it all rot away like it is just some dust...
What was that tunnel mock up in the middle of the room @13:21 . Did you go in it and take some video? Maybe used as a tunnel scene in the movie...???
A lot of decay for the time it was abandoned, but a very nice find indeed Bob.
didnt know about the movie. going to go check it out
Really extreme urbex Bob! Thanks!
It was a fun explore! Thanks for always checking 😁 Next one is a power station
@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath When I was a young teen my friends and I would explore this abandoned power station in our town. I was huge and deep. The turbine hall was flooded but you could still see the tops of them. We started to climb the chimney, but the iron rails were rusted and breaking and there was no cage to keep you from falling. We didn't climb it. Some of my best memories!
@@jepolch Sounds amazing. I really love eploring these big massive industrial sites. There's a lot to see. And those chineys are very dangerous to climb yes, glad you didn't.
This was a great history lesson as well. Amazing how the shoe is now firmly on the other foot when it comes to China and Japan... and the rest of us for that matter.
2:03 the building was not overrun by Japanese despite of overwhelming firepower because it was located in an odd location. It was right next to Shanghai International Settlement, which was under control of western powers at that time. At the time when precision munition was not invented, collateral damage was a very high possibility, so Japanese Army limited its firepower on the building. That was why the building stayed in Chinese hand for so long until supply ran out.
Yes, I explain that too :)
They put WAY to much work in on that movie set. I wonder why?
Hi Bob
I recognise that film set ipman????
Keep up with the excellent informative quality content
Bestest from Scotland 👋👋👋
My bag got it wrong maybe I have seen clips of the film ,filmed there😮
Minha nossa senhora 😳 top demais mesmo 😃 ótimo vídeo 👏👏👏👏👏👏.
Thanks Mauro, glad you liked it! Some other highlights coming up😄

what an incredible place
It is! Loved it🤩 Thanks for checking out
Damn it, I missed the premiere, that was my favorite Chinese movie as well.
Huge balls Robert! There are certain countries where I am concerned about violating something I don't even know about. China is on that short list, didn't see it posted but I don't think that would give you cover in China. Well done and I love the episodes where I am nervous for you.
Thanks again Bender! I guess I'm in less trouble than in the USA in most places when I get caught to be honest. And in some places I will have big troubles in both nations :')
That is a beautiful disaster. I could live there.
It kind of reminds me of a section in okinawa called, "american village" or something like that. It was a 1950's themed area. Was really neat. Old 50's cars and all that. Thank you for sharing 😁👍
Nice, sounds interesting, never have been there😄 Thanks for checking out
Good job boys 👍
Thanks for checking out, more to come :)
Hey Bob Have you ever watched The Sand Pebbles ? Great Movie ! Early 60s with Steve McQueen .
I can’t get over the amount of decay for a movie set abandoned five years. Must have been made cheaply as possible.
im amazed you guys are not being arrested yet
In China or in general? I've been charged for possessing state secrets, espionage etc. In China all went ok ;)
Awsome.
I have seen the movie, "the 800". Very good .👌👌👌👌👌
Yes, very good movie!
I saw this movie a couple of years ago. It was excellent! Why would they just let this place go to hell like this? Can you imagine if the nightclubs were actually still in use as a retro theme park!
Movie top Number One.😮
MY frinden ROBIN and DONG in this video, and welcome CHINA BOB!
I'm pretty sure I watched that movie in 8th grade... I was in an international school while we lived in Shanghai.
Super video
Thanks a million!😄
How you guys fit thru that hole in the fence with balls the size of dumptrucks,is beyond me! Ide sure not like to explain trespassing in china! Hahaha not sure if your brave or nuts, but i love it! Thanks for filmin! 👏 k
Saw my solo trip to an abandoned Soviet air craft carrier in China?😁 worth the watch!
I'm all over it like a fat kid on a smarty! Hahaha
Thanks so much! Definitely a permanent subscriber and have some catching up to do! Amazing work my friend!
I think the guy leading the expedition actually THINKS he is in a movie. He's so dramatic with his hand signals.
That security personnel is probably fired due to this video by now.
CZcams is blocked there😂🙏Luckily for him.
And uhhh if you think this os bad.. check out the earlier Mall episode in China. One of the most hilarious moments with “security/caretakers”
@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath Do not be so hypocritical! You actually do not care about whether your behaviors will hurt others!
I saw that movie it was good but you have to have subtitles on to know what they are saying.😁😁😁😁
Hire about twenty guys for a month or two, just cart away all the refuse, and you've got an incredibly potent tourist attraction right there.
Nice video but would be great to add stills from the movie into the video to see the location then and now.
Uhm.. I did👀
八佰2020 is a great Chinese Movie :是一部很有正能量的伟大影视作品 很真实
Very good movie! I liked it a lot😁
Wonder why they have security there.
Most places have. Even in most European countries every brick wall is guarded.
Japanese attacked four banks...seems like that could be a clue! Honest trade among friendship! Article 1 Section 10
Hello my friend!
Hi Kristian ! 🍻🍻

Thanks a million 🙏
👍👍👍👍
where exactly in China?
Like - 261 👍👌👏🌹❤️🙏
Thanks for checking out! Have you seen the movie?
Wasnt this the same chinese soldiers which got trained by the German Army, and provided with german Equippment and considered back than a Special Unit?
Que lastima que china no sea libre :(
They are scenarios created for several movies WTF
Vad heter filmen 🤔🇸🇪
I wish the chinese would fix that place up. Dont change it. Just clean up and fix whats broken. People all over the world would travel there
This is the director's private building and no one can enter it.
@@yanghua9408 he must not be very smart then. He could rack in the dough if he opened it as a little park or something and all profits would be his. Sure the commies will probably take a cut

O well, I can’t read that my friend😂

tafiou sotola
Chinese people are smart, they are letting time to create a movie set for zombie movie 🤣🤣
Hahaha it would be a shame of this set was only used once. Gambling zombies😂
looked like san Francisco only better
and the crazy things is what the japanese did after the invasion there. Nanjing Massacre
And Now that Guard has been killed for not doing his job...Haaaa
Actually, Japan attacked America because America was sending help and sanction Japan
So glad you such excellent guides to keep you out of trouble. China is a place where people get disappeared for breathing wrong or fined into poverty for just eating. Stay safe!
Thanks! All fine there mate! I guess for most places you get the same amount of trouble as in other countries☺️☺️
