I think people forget porto against inter (the finalists) last year recorded an xg value of 3.52 over the course of the 2 legs, and inter recorded 2.08xg. Everyone making fun of arsenal needs to realise this porto team is the real deal in the champions league and were very unlucky to not make the semis last year.

The analysis was very good, but having said that Arsenal were very poor last night, there were a lot of misplaced passes, a lack of movement and mis-control of the ball. On top of that the intensity was down and the obvious way round this defence is over the top or play up to Havertz which wasn’t attempted.

And I think that's where the penny dropped. There was low intensity and willingness to outrun Porto. More than anything, I think we played very well but we were fatigued. At this level, you NEED your best team. A midfield block would be suicide having both Zinchenko/Partey in the line up because they demand the ball in these exact tight spaces, Jesus/Timber as well. None were available.
There is no shame in losing to a well disciplined and clinical Porto team. If even Jesus is available for this match, I’d expect Trossard to make way. I’ve always said the Havertz/Jesus combination is better than the Trossard/Havertz one for this reason. Jesus offers that type of Xfactor to unlock defences while Trossard is more clinical in the final 3rd. We needed the former in this match.

And with that in mind, Porto were very familiar with the type of play that Arsenal were going to do because they have been in that position before countless times in the Portuguese League. To give you an recent example, 2 weeks ago Porto lost to FC Arouca in the league 3-2 because of the same tactics that Porto used to win against Arsenal.

*One thing I* love about Mikel is that he is a fast learner and I *believe* the return leg at the *Emirate Stadium* will be a very different experience for *Fc Porto* players and their fans.
We really missed *Jesus’s* presence in attack and his ability to create chaos in the final 3rd. Also we lacked the presence of a player like *Thomas Partey* to play risky passes through or over their mid-block which was how we beat Man city. Finally the lads were kind of overwhelmed by the stage and as a result they made silly mistakes and gave the ball a way so cheaply. This is why I know that it will be a different ball game when they visit us at home in a fews days time.

I honestly think it had a lot to do with the refereeing. The match was stopped so often and for things we thrive on - recovery tackles, tussling on corners. We couldn’t gain momentum and the constant stoppages stifled our potency from corners and build up. It was a classic champion’s league humbling. A lot of our strengths don’t translate well in Europe, given the style of play. We have to play smarter and hopefully home advantage works in our favor

You missed the part where they nullified Arsenal’s pressing ability to win the ball back by falling over at the slightest bit of contact which stopped us winning the ball back high up the pitch (even in their own box sometimes) on multiple occasions. They also fell to the floor at every single corner which nullified our ability to gain any advantage from a set piece. Can’t score from a corner if the referee blows for a foul every single time we have a corner. The game was shocking to watch because one team came to play and the other team set up to just stop any football being played.

Finally someone that seen exactly what i did, the thing that irritated ne was the fact that it wasnt the furst tone arteta and arsenal has seen the mid block. Man city and liverpool have used the same tactics against us before and weve adjusted and adapted. The fact that arteta kept the 4-3-3 is delusional. Jorginho shouldve been subbed in earlier and dropped back for creation and rice shouldve gotten pushed up. Havertz shoukdbe stayed up top and arteta shouldve made a formation change second half. This game was a real test to both the players and arteta, and they failed miserably, towards the end it looked like they didnt even care anymore. The only ither thing ill add is hiw corrupt the refs were for porto we had 23 fouls to there 10 they could foul all they wanted but as soon as we played physical we get called for every tiny little thing its a CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TOURNAMENT NOT A FRIENDLY WTF ARE U CALLING?!?

I don't think there are necessarily any major tactical changes that need to be made rather than attitude.
When I look at Arteta's masterplan he wants a backline that can make progressive passes at speed that can break down lowblocks and bypass phases of play.
Zinchenko, Timber, Saliba, Partey and to cap it all off Raya. Not just ball carriers and overlappers. This isn't to blame the team or scapegoat anyone in particular rather the solution is there, when 5 defensive players can all make good passes it opens the game up.
The attitude adjustment I would like to see from Arsenal is to be okay with losing the ball earlier on. Porto were okay with conceding the ball and playing deep. So IMHO, give them the ball more often. Play through the middle a couple of times even if you lose the ball, spring the trap so to speak and then counter-press and get the ball back. Ask questions, and bring the fight to them. Get the ball in the middle and then try a through ball a couple of times, mix it up. Even if it's unsuccessful they will now be more mindful of it especially if you start creating unpredictability. However, Arsenal just see the middle is blocked out and go wide. Also, I would have liked to have seen more shots at range especially earlier on in the game. Arsenal lacks the passing speed of City in these situations, even though City weren't very successful against Chelsea you saw the speed with which they moved the ball to open Chelsea up.

This was a game of inability to play in the middle, defenders and midfielders who found themselves in possession the most unwilling to play long balls and poor movement and occasional poor first touches from wingers. We lacked risk while porto where fairly disciplined in their game plan. I think even if Arteta has already experienced the mid block a few times since last year there was no tactic to challenge it and we got too bold with the lack of risks with the hope to challenge them at the Emirates.
