Why Beating Porto Is HUGE For Arsenal

  • It took a David Raya save in the penalty shootout, but Arsenal are through to the Champions League Quarter Finals. But while the tie ended 1-1 over both legs, simply turning around the initial deficit represented an enormous victory for Mikel Arteta. Adam Clery looks at why Porto were such a difficult proposition for the Gunners, and why finding a way past them bodes incredibly well for the remainder of the season.

    Porto fan here. Disappointed with the defeat but glad that we were able to put up a fight against one of, if not possibly the best team in the world currently. The better team went through and you deserved the win, so congratulations. Hope you go on to win the entire thing now and I do think Arsenal are capable of that, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't feel confident in winning it all. I genuinely think that the people who say things like "this was against Porto, against stronger opposition you'll lose" are sounding more and more like modern day dinosaurs to me that haven't caught up with the fact that the gap between the top teams and everyone else has decreased over the years, football is played to an insanely high standard now throughout pretty much all Champions League teams, and even teams outside of it. It is becoming more and more difficult for teams to dominate, let alone be consistent enough to stay at the top. There's also this narrative that happens every single time an underdog performs better than expected where people go "Arsenal played poorly, they could barely beat Porto!" instead of actually giving the other team credit and acknowledging that they played well, and more importantly that Arsenal performed even better and were able to pull through against a team that looked very hard to beat. Both teams played well and Arsenal showed they have the composure and the discipline to perform in uncomfortable situations whilst also managing to win. When it mattered most they delivered, and that's that, so I really do think there's no reason why you can't be European champions.

      Exactly, back in the days when tactics in football were barely seen, most of the good teams fully relied on players’ quality. Thanks to those legendary managers (e.g Cruyff), modern football has evolved to be a strategical sports, players can be trained to play different systems and formations and managers can switch among tactics depending on the opponent they are facing. Therefore, we can see teams like Luton went head to head with big 6 teams in premier league. What I am trying to say is, even though sometimes there is a noticeable skill gap of players between two opposing teams, the underdog may find a system/ formation to counter the tactic of those juggernauts and eventually outperform them. Same thing happens with this Porto team, their midblock restricted our midfield and limited many of our possible chances. We, all the football fans, have to give credit to them for creating so many problems to Arsenal and stop saying ‘it’s just Porto we are facing’. They played well and we still came through. That’s it.

    That midblock was absolutely insufferable, couldn't generate any momentum or string any of our rhythmic patterns of play together. Saka was marked out of the game and infuriating, called for Jesus to replace Trossard even after his goal. Gabriel's long passes were overhit every time and the team just seemed very on edge in terms of playing vertically and progressing through with those line-breaking passes. Styles do make fights and I hope that Arteta can learn lessons from this and counteract or implement Porto's style depending on the situation. Etihad away. But it's crucial now that we get our squad fully healthy and up to speed for this run-in. Need Timber, Partey, Jesus all fit and firing for the last few months. COYG!💪

      The mid block was the same as first legs, nothing special to me we won 2-0 the call on havertz to disallow the odegaard goal was hypocritical when saka was not being well defended he was being fouled with the same jersey pulling and illegal contact from the back all game. We had 3 clear front of goal opportunities that we didn't finish the break through was there, build up plays on edge of box, I'm not sure we were watching the same game because it was vice versa, we rarely had the ball in our half we disrupted every play and made them lose possession constantly with the on going pressure. It was our control and defense that was too strong for them. Our offense shouldve finished some of the chances we had in front of goal but all in all it was a great learning experience for the young lads. A few flaws that need to be worked on but man I appreciate the step up in physicality we played with and the fucking maturity these players have in that penalty shootout, props to RAYYYAAA THE LEGEND😂 That man proved himself in an insane way. Man City would've destroyed Porto in the 1st Leg, and Liverpool. This is why The Arsenal NEED Ivan Toney for these type of games. Raya and Toney's combination was excellent, and brought the best out of them both. Toney SHOULD be Arteta's priority in the Summer. Those Long Balls from Raya to Toney was super effective and would've helped in Games like the 1st Leg; and would help in the Prem Run-in (where Teams have more time to study you).

    Porto’s mid-block was efficient. I also noticed that Ødegård and Havertz weren’t actually pressing like they do in other matches. Arteta in his press conference stated that they prepare for every scenario. This means Arteta knew this would go into extra time. He probably instructed his front players just to block the passing lanes and not press which may have started a counter attack and exhausted the players. Wendell was great. Pepe was brilliant. Showing that his hair turned white for a reason. Evanilson, Galeno, Conceição are a good trio. There are two legs for a reason. To learn and adapt for the next leg.

    Declan Rice said the biggest lesson he learnt since joining Arsenal was “how to stand still” as he was so used to being all action at West Ham. Holding your position might not make for a great looking stats or on the eye like Odegards 6 passes in the first half but unlike the first leg where he was dropping deep to get in the ball more but it was out of position in areas he couldn’t hurt Porto, while tonight he held his position and was then in position to make the telling pass to Trossard. That’s what was most impressive the maturity and discipline to stick to the gamelan for the hood of the team even if it’s hurting your individual game. This is how a team wins things, when the collective comes first. Sorry for the long comment but I just love this young teams mentality, whatever happens this season I’m proud of their development.

    But truthfully, for what has been a season to forget for Porto (3rd in the League, lost almost all chances of silverware, terrible upper managing from the President and his direction, coupled with tensions between the fans over the upcoming elections) at least I can be proud that we always manage to be an opponent that's taken seriously in the Champions League, and that we still can bring some solace and good look to the Portuguese League in an European setting 💪

    I think sometimes the quiet games for Saka are taken as Saka not being good instead of looking at it as teams knowing that if the stifle Saka, they stifle Arsenal .. and sure enough .. when Saka is manhandled, Arsenal are not as effective .. especially when Martinelli isn't on the other side .. I think it's testament to Saka's presence that teams have a game plan to silence him .. maybe it's just a matter of the whole team to pick that up and rotate to force the opposition to re-evaluate their plan .. but I think it's more Saka being targeted than him being quiet ..

    It's crucial against teams like Porto, that Arsenal have more than just one ball progressor in the defensive line. I still think Mikel will persist with Partey in a fullback slot and next season Timber will add much more in game flexibility to Arsenal's build up.

  • @Sizdothyx
    @Sizdothyx Před 2 měsíci +3

    The weird thing is that you can beat the mid-block. It wouldn't have been viable 20 years ago.
    You just need the individual brilliance and pace ala Ronaldinho, Henry and Giggs. I'm not saying that football in this era is better or worse, but the compact nature of today's game has basically nullified the importance of flair against the priority on technique and control. Mid-blocks would not have worked 20 years ago the way that the two-man striker team wouldn't work today, but against Porto's defense, all it really would need would be one crazy South American deciding to take their man on; the thing with the mid-block is that if the individual breaks down the high-line from deep, after the second player, he's basically through on goal ... but that kind of individualism is also detrimental against teams with a strong press and requires a regroup to counter, so teams don't really use it. It's telling that only Mbappe is left that can do that consistently. Even Vinicius slows down more than he speeds up, but that's to the benefit of the Real Madrid squad.
    The game is beautiful.

    I feel that the majority of Arsenal's issues against set defenses could be solved with better width. Time and again, their inverted wingers will drag defenders infield, leaving acres of space down the flanks...but since the fullbacks are inverted, there's no one to overlap.

    Brilliant analysis! Aspecially the importance of timing and composure during penalty shoot-out. Mentality is the key word, as you highlighted. This Arsenal team mentality is growing steadily , and so is its experience and roughness during tough moments. I want haters to deal with the FACT >>> this Arsenal squad mentality is way beyond anybody's imagination of their mentality. Bravo Gunners and Bravo Arteta's coaching team. I LOve this Arsenal team

    Expert and exceptional analysis. I think we desperately needed a certain Partey as a force in the mid. J5 was good but i think he was kind of cautious in his possession. Which was required as he was waiting for those Kai runs which we saw during the first 25 mins, but they caught on to that and pressed him immediately he was on the ball. One of Partey's underrated attributes is his dribbling skills and his ability to find the pass in between the lines to create a scenario for a chance creation. He kind of baits opponents to try and press thus opening spaces elsewhere on the pitch. I think his presence would have forced Porto to go to a low block thus giving Saka and Odegaard the freedom they so much needed. I think if we had Jesus and Partey fully fit for this match, we wouldn't have to go to extra time.

    Arteta had the squad preparing for pens after the sporting loss last year. In preseason we were doing penalty shootouts after friendlies. Plus the shootout against city in the shield. This is something they’ve worked on and clearly it paid off.

    Great analysis, thanks!
    8:00 Wendell's effectiveness started because the referee let him get away with absolute murder. 3m 10s into the match, Saka is driving in from the flank toward the box, Wendell has a borderline yellow/red card tackle that the referee doesn't even call for a foul. That set the tone for the rest of the match.
    Even though his play was dirty, I don't blame Wendell - you take what the referee gives you.

  • @davebritton21

    Adam, you’re analysis takes it to the second and third level. It’s such a nice change from the superficial mainstream stuff.
    Did you notice how Raya dove the same way every pen? I’ve always thought that is a good strategy. If 1 or 2 saves will win it, why not maximize your chances by committing the same way each time? It seems simplistic, but maybe it works??

    Not enough people are talking about this!!
    Even when the game was tied at 1-1 Porto refused to open up, play, and go forward. The second you open up against this Arsenal team, they will tear you to shreds!! Can’t wait to see this Arsenal side go up against a team that opens up and tries to play with them!!

    Really enjoying the analysis from Adam, I returned to the video about the first leg yesterday as a preview for this game. One criticism though, at 6:52 when talking about how the Porto CBs split wide in the average positions, isn't this all coming from where they took touches in possession building out the back? From what I remember of watching the game the CBs defended in a standard position. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, the average position graphics are quite the black box not sure how theyre made.

    • @1337sammy
      @1337sammy Před 2 měsíci +1

      I think the average position maps take any action into account so passing, tackles etc. I'd imagine the split, wide CB buildup is definitely what created that gap in the average position map

    Correct. I didnt once see Odegaard drop deep to recieve the ball in 2nd leg. He stay up. So basically Arteta instruct other player to find a away to deliver the ball to final 3rd.

    While I agree with the Odegaard point … that heatmap neglects to mention Jorginho didn’t play in the first leg. That’s the main why Odegaard was so much deeper.
    It felt like a mistake on the night and it proved to be. Jorginho must always play …

    I like you thought Porto were a difficult team to beat. In both games Porto were so well organised. Add the fact that both teams had to produce a great quality goal to defeat each other. Fair play to both teams.
    The assist, the saves, the defending, the midfield from Arsenal all brilliant but Trossard's goal is so well taken with such sans-froid, calmness, pick a spot and put it there, all this in 3 second. Motm to me.

    At 5:47 (Assist Ödegaard) there are 9 ❗️ Porto players in or just close before their own box. That picture alone explains why this was a tough game. Glad we won it 🦾.
