The Easiest Way To Do A Drum Roll On Your Snare Drum

- A snare drum roll is one of the first things that drummers want to learn how to do; however, many beginners are discouraged because they think that it is really difficult to learn.
Learning how to do a drum roll on your snare drum is actually really simple. It involves pushing each drum stick against the head of the snare drum continuously.
It will definitely take some practice to do the best snare roll; however, this video will show you, in a step by step manner, how to do a drum roll perfectly!

when he said "i am so sorry" after hitting the camera ive never laughed harder
It’s like an NPC In a GTA game 😂
LMAO!
00:50 I am so sorry XD

i feel bad for him there
Thanks😂
Apology accepted
Sounds like Badger from breaking bad
lol you're right
Not really.
Omg 😂😂😂
+CamelCats Dude, I just came here to say he sounds like Saul from Breaking Bad. But I see the Badger too.
Wow
LMAOOOO THE COMMENTS
If I did a drum roll like that, my Instructor would slap me😂
Agree, very poor example of a drum roll, no fluency to it.
+Stuart Grandquist Guys please stop it he did his best 👏👏👏👏👏
Killer Raspberry same
yeah were not sloths
Sami Salamah emotional
Buddy Rich turning in his grave
you mean 'rolling' in his grave?
Mainak Das GODDAMN LMAOOOO
This was the technique Buddy Rich used. The only difference is that Buddy Rich used traditional grip.
this made me laugh so hard haha as a drummer this is a meme
_"(The drum roll) is actually not (hard to do). Drummers usually learn this within the first few weeks of them even touching a pair of drumsticks."_ SimplySnare
0:13 Thumbs down, abort here. A drum roll might be simple, but one could spend a lifetime trying to perfect it and never be satisfied. And drummers do NOT learn the double stroke rebound accent within even the first few months; accenting the rebounds takes years to get clean and ready for artistic use, and the drummer's long tone is never as good as it could be.
Fail.
That wasn't a double stroke rebound lol that was more of a buzz role.
30-45 minutes for a beginner? Read the intro to George Stone's Stick Control and he says you're not even ready to approach it for at least a year.
Zak De 0lk990999999pp0000000000000000000000000000000
you're mistaken, this is a buzz roll not dbl stroke, and when I was younger they DID teach this VERY early on
+Craig Campbell ohhh, so cuz one book says it, it must be true!!??
Too many drum experts here.
Raven Rodriguez I’m in middle school band and I know this is wrong
I am a beginner and know this is not good
???
Literally everything about this is wrong.
oh :(
As a drummer it hurts
he is obviously trying to give the drum a massage with the sticks
Percuss
brunton faux lmao
this is the best drum roll video I've watched! thanks😃
I may be a flautist in band, but I know that is not how you properly roll.

As long as one gets the sound one is looking for who cares how they hold it.
I had some asshole give me shit one day because I wasn't playing the bongos correctly, but I had musicians come up to me an ask me how I got that weird sound outta the Bongos and they asked me to show them how.
Same with drums. My right arm got fucked up in an accident when I was young. I started screwing around with some drums a friend gave me for therapy because regular therapy was boring.
I found out I had a natural talent for them and have been playing for over 50 yrs now.
My father (RIP) drove me nuts trying to teach me how to play golf. Hold the club this way or that way, bla, bla, bla.
My uncle was a pro and told me the object of this game is to get that little white ball into that cup with the least amount of strokes. He said he didn't care if I stuck the club up my ass, as long as I accomplished that goal.
Same principle here.
Ratson haba b'shem Yahuah.
yeah thats the lazy sneaky cheat way
DO’NT YOU BELIEVE IT!!!
u see this is what fake it til u make looks like and he wears it well haha lol

That is one of the most horrifying sounding snares I've ever heard.
I know right
No
Wacka Dack same 🤣🤣🤣
So badly tuned
It sounds like a washing machine falling down the stairs.
All the years of playing and I still have to practice this rudiment!! What I try to do is practice five dynamic levels. Meaning pp,p,mf,f,ff. Different volumes, maybe some accents here and there and of course change from triplet form and then try 16th note form. Get crazy, have fun and do what you do best because one of my drum teachers the great Gary Chester said to me there's more than one way to skin a cat. The first time he said that to me I looked at him and said.... Why would you want to skin a cat?!!!! Haha
if I did this my drum teacher would knock me out with the drum stick
Nicely done! May not be a textbook tutorial according to some of the comments but I heard a very fluid drumroll. Great job
Doing rolls in circles is exactly how to not do rolls🤦🏼♂️
Tubular Gamer Jacob If it Sounds like a roll, it is a Roll.
Tubular Gamer Jacob while the grip is wrong the idea is still sound, look up "the old whipped cream roll" it's a technique used by a lot of jazz drummers
Niels Peter Kjeldsen not really
Tubular Gamer Jacob i typically do a roll with my right hand but not with my left hand
Rod Stewart that does not make sense if you can’t do a double stroke on your left then you can’t do a roll
This buzz roll is a real thing.. it exists. And most people I hear talking about it it's usually bad talk.
Tis a real technique! It exists! I have been drumming for years, years ago someone asked me "can you do a buzz roll" luck for me I used to mess around with it alot. That doesn't mean that I didn't actually play rolls as well. Just that I think can also be fun to just see how good you can make the buzz sound.
There we gan I've yapped on for a canny bit. Good video mate
You did great brother
Thanks a lot man, that was useful for a beginner!
That moment when you realize, He's holding the sticks incorrectly...
Edit: Three years later, yes yes his grip is a French grip, so it technically isn’t a “wrong” grip, but that doesn’t change that this whole video is a joke
Krusty kungfu Are you a drummer or a percussionist? His grip is WAY too loose and his knuckles aren't to the ceiling.
+Krusty kungfu he is holding the sticks wrong completley i play the snare drum in a marching band he is also doing the drumroll wron :)
+Krusty kungfu true if u want to do it the way want to cause not every body plays the same thanks 😊😊
+CurbSideGutter Everybody has their own unique style.
+nathan taylor he's doing the French grip style it's not wrong it's just not how we do it in America
I clicked on the thumbnail because of his grip ... I died as soon as he said circle ... BUT HIS LEFT HAND CIRCLE OHGOD
very creative approach, I dig it!
Everyone in the comments is so triggered😂
Everyone in the comments is right*
Jaron Wilson ... sport stacking anyoune.
xd
I would love to see other instructional videos from him like how to charm a cobra or how to hang-glide. I'm a drum instructor and this video made me cringe. What's that grip? What's with the egg-beater circles? What's with showing it to us wrong as if he knows what he's doing? What's with that head? Is it 20 years old? No wonder his tuning is so bad, that head died a long time ago.
If you want to learn how to play a buzz roll or a press roll which is what he's trying to do here in a clumsy way, DON'T WATCH THIS VIDEO TO LEARN HOW!
Aren't you supposed to just roll on one spot?
yes -_-
Buddy Rich always did circles while doing rolls. And so did/does alot of great drummers.
***** like who?
name some other drummers besides buddy rich.
Marky Oosterveen Buddy Rich is the only name you need credentials from. Even then, his skill so surpassed every drummer he encountered that this odd circular roll-base simply gave him more definition to his roll.
TrickysBen You're right.
I dont even remember why i disagreed with you lol.
Wow that was so easy! Thanks for the lesson!!! Subscribed!
That’s the roll technique that Buddy Rich used back in the day; he called it “The Old Whipped Cream Roll.”
The side to side circular motion is a thing Buddy and older players called the whipped cream roll, yes. But this is not how to do it. The concept of pressure is not it. The way the sticks sit in the hands is not it. The degree of tension in the fingers and wrists is not it. The consistency of the sound is not it.
It's called a buzz roll and is one of the 7 essential rudiments of drumming. Keep practicing, SS. Be sure to work n double stroke rolls, as well. Don't settle for easy.
10 thousand subs for doing wrong shit?? how much could I get if I showed people correctly?
Victor Pena
I feel like watching again and again and again. Thanks @SimplySnare for the video
thank you so much i really appreciate this and it actually works
Your snare drum needs a new head
DPC-PRODUCTIONS your sticks need a new player!! Terrible example of rudiments. I learned from the Principle of the LSO & he knew what to do.
Stuart Grandquist what?
And his head needs a new brain
Jason Schooler ohhhhhhhhhhh
Please never do this, this is not one of the ways you do a roll. And if you do this in front of a real drummer they will laugh at you.
Thanks, going to try it
Excellent video
Use proper grip! French grip is to be used on a timpani, not a drum!
So Manu Katche and Carter Beauford play wrong.
It's all preference dude
Sebass shut the fuck up
Your right but your forgetting that the timpony is a drum
You right, glad someone is smart
Straight to the point! Great instruction!👍👌🏽❤️
Good playing
You have amazing hands.
6,686 people should find another drum teacher.
Like some other people already said, this is not a 'roll', but a 'buzz', and it doesn't sound fluent at all. Maybe that's because you haven't learned to play the roll fluently (both hands should play at an even volume and preferably do the same motion). This is very hard to do and not something you learn the first few weeks. I know because I teach and only after months or even years (depends on how much practice time one puts into it) do I see my students 'mastering' it.
A very good way to play things evenly is to learn to play left-handed - if you're right handed (and vice versa). This strengthens (rather a muscle memory thing than muscle mass) your weaker hand/arm/fingers so it's more on par with your most used hand.
I'm not bashing you to make you feel bad, but I've seen your other video (5 bad habits) and I'm trying to prevent others from following bad advice. We all need to learn and that only happens by listening to good advice from people with lots of experience or figuring it out ourselves by practicing and listening to what our body tells us (and our friends or family ;)) Please watch some other drum lessons first or buy a good book ... or even better, find a good teacher ... before you start giving any.
First of all doing circles when you roll is extremely bad technique you want to avoid that at all costs and the head needs to b replaced and needs to either be tuned or needs a dampener such as a wallet and the only two grips for snare players are either match or traditional not a timpani grip
So I guess Buddy Rich, and Louie Belson had bad technique? This is how they played a closed roll. This is actually called a "whipped cream roll" very old technique from the 30's and 40's.
Yes, agree entirely! "Circles" is not an accepted technique, French grip for snare drum not good, and why is he playing the drum way over there instead of closer to the center?
+Craig Campbell I learned about buzz rolls watching a video of a dead percussionist, she played them at the edge, and I do circles with sticks and brushes. nobody is an authority, anyone can play however they want, I use a stick technique I'm fairly certain is hardly used if at all, but with millions of singers throughout history I doubt I invented it, but I'll bet you would all say it's "wrong."
the head doesn't need shit it's all tasre
Very helpful. Thank you!
Awesome thanks!
My friends, look up how to do a buzz roll, this is not a good way to do learn this, we do not make circles you see, Making circles makes you look bad, you use back fingers to do a roll..
You kinda sound like Ted from Scrubs
Amazing
Great video. Drumming is a simple technique and this explains it.
This is a very bad tutorial, his technique sucks
Thanks for the really simple lesson. The first two minutes I started saying “breathe don’t kill” and was about to give up then all the sudden I mastered it. Was so awesome. I used the visual blur of the sticks moving to make my circles and it helped a lot.
how do you push down on a drumstick with your index finger when it's on the bottom of the stick
Get creative, superglue the finger
Ha. That's a cool take on a roll man. Thanks !
I was smiling through the whole video❤
"Many people think that a drumroll is the most difficult thing to do"
And that, kids, is why you should get a tutor who knows what they are talking about, and don't follow everything you see on CZcams. This is possibly the worst lesson on a drum roll I've ever scene.
Scene?
Yas queen
Seen*
Seen not scene
Eh. I like it.
Thanks dude helped a lot!
Thanks this might help me
"Woop, I am so sorry"

LETS GO BLOOOO
I tried doing a snare drum roll the Simply Snare way on purpose on my old Slingerland Festival Model Snare Drum from 1979. With some practice I could get a buzz roll going to a certain degree. I could do a "whipped cream roll" using that incorrect stick holding technique method. I've seen Buddy Rich(and others) videos in which Buddy used that technique while doing his drum solos. So maybe Simply Snare was not entirely wrong when he did his drum rolls. I also can do rolls the correct way using matched grip or traditional grip. So
please, stop bullying this Simply Snare drummer for what he is teaching in his videos. And please stop hating and trashing this man for doing drum videos that are different from everyone else. Enough of the negative comments folks. THINK POSITIVE!!!
THANK YOU I’ve wanted to learn this for so long
MayonnaiseFilledRam NOOOOOOOO STOP RIGHT NOW GO WATCH BILL BACHMAN ON HOW TO ROLL
no even close
Lori Kahler *not
Just do R-R-L-L R-R-L-L....
mama dada
I do that o3o
That's an open roll.
Craig Campbell no, thats a double stroke roll lol
Diddles or 8 note roles
spritemakergager So does your dad.
Great!
Thanks!
This is so wrong... No. Just no. Keep the back side of your hand facing up and no circular rotation. Got this is so wrong
1) keep all fingers around stick
2) don't use circular motions-stroke straight down.
3) thumbs to the side of the sticks
4) 90 degree angle
5) keep your elbows comfortably bent for better leverage.
6) use more wrist. Using your arms too much creates lack of volume in your heights, uneven strokes, and awkward bouncing during diddles.
Anyone willing to learn drums online, please go to a more trustworthy source. This guy's technique is almost painful to watch.
watching this the day before auditions, thanks for the advice!
Stick with it man, nice video.
I sound like the fat captain in walle not saying u r fat or in a mean way
I love how autocorrect made it "I" not "u" check before you post next time
yeah lel
Johno FTW
yeah pedroz??? why u calling ma name
You should get a new head
I thought the same thing..
I couldn't be inspired to play with an ugly ass head like that.
Thanks Sir Mr. C!
Best demonstration I've seen.i dont own a drum kit .can give me suggestions on items I could practice on ?
Jaq Noel pls don’t play a roll like this
I love how everyone here has apparently read the Buddy Rich Book Of Correct Drumming Techniques As Ordained By God. This is one technique. We can argue benefits and draw backs but saying he is wrong is a bit ridiculous. Musicians of all people are supposed to understand how subjective every aspect of music is. I can't believe I just read the word "pathetic" on a teaching video comment thread.
did you not hear his buzz roll?
dude it didn't sound fluent at all.
People are dicks on youtube.
I mean you get taught how to hold a drum stick in the beginning. It is one way to play the drums but it's not correct. I'm no pro but I can tell you that's not correct
Holy Damn I didn't even see his roll yet...
***** I kinda want to see how you play now.
Once again, your broad idea is spot on "press firmly against the head", yet your details are far fetched and incorrect... Very, very much so...
1. You use your WHOLE HAND for a drum roll, not just your thumb and your index finger. All the fingers.
2. The reason your roll "fades in and out" is because you are doing it wrong. Moving your stick "in a circle" (from cardinal north edge to cardinal west edge) does you no good. The only reason you would move the stick during a roll is if you are using a loose roll base (not switching hands too often, not aggressive), and even then, you move towards the MIDDLE so as to allow for the weaker portion of your roll (the end) to have more volume.
3. Your roll vibration is good, where it doesn't change amounts of hits, or pressure. However your tone is BRAPbrapBRAPbrapBRAPbrap. Even those suckers out. Your crappy sticks aren't helping.
Once again, your broad idea is spot on "press firmly against the head", yet your details are far fetched and incorrect... Very, very much so...
TrickyBen Spot on
almost sounds like he's doing flams, doesn't it
Your sticks look like a magic wand
I like the sound of your voice
He sounds like Saul Goodman...
That's a cheat!!! Hahaha
Thanks works great I like your videos
No, it is horrible technique......
Thank you
Stop with the hate he is just trying to help
he's trying to get people to play as bad as him so he doesn't feel lonely
Showing the wrong way to do something is not HELP. He never had lessons and never did marching band.
that's not how you hold sticks...😑
+Dancer There are multiple different ways to hold a drum stick. I assume you hold it American style, or Traditional style? He uses French grip.
+Lemon AoTTG Even for French grip that is really bad
Trevy Meh..
That is actually one way to do a drum roll cool I will try it
Nice One Bro
Was this supposed to be a joke?
i hope this is not the way he plays...please god no!
stop hating it works it's just a easyer way to do it
it's the WRONG way to do it...
it sounds the same and its easyer for me sooo yea
may sound the same but your hand is gonna hurt if your technique is not ok... believe me, you better learn how to do it properly
ive been doing this since it came out never had pain.
It is not easier, it is harder, bad technique can also hurt your fingers. Also, get off CZcams if you can't spell 'easier'.
Cool!😎
Thanks dude. I can do a drum roll now.
Awsome il learn this fast after i watch this video
this was one of the first drum videos i’ve watched
Hey dude, this vid is pretty simple & Cool😎 ... I Luv it!. Ur voice is epic aswell!. 😬💚😂 I've been Drumming for about 3 yr's now... And for some reason, I've never actually done a Proper Drum Roll... Well, I've just hit the sticks in a straight line but not around in circles 🔘🔘🔘 but this looks way cooler, & sounds more like an actual Drum Roll... So with that "DRUM ROLLLLL... PLEASE.... Dadadadadadadad" 😂😂✌🏻️🤘🏻🤔🙃 Thanku. XOXO EM-B! X ❤️
Your drumsticks look like magic wands sir
Thank you my percussion teacher gave me 1 hour on my laptop for this thanks
cool man thanks for spreading
the new to me
Do not drum roll like that it is not correct.
Please don't, learn diddles, (I know, the name is ridiculous but that's what it's called) that's the correct way
nice
Good vid
Cool
Thanks for the tip :)
Some people are just awful here. He said that there are many ways, and this is *his* way in *his* opinion. That in itself means he is not wrong. And, some people just want a little nudge in learning something. I'm glad he took the time to help others. :D
There are many ways to do some things, but there are also good ways and shit ways. This is a shit way to do a drum roll. Also, people at need a little nudge in their learning, but no one needs a nudge in the wrong direction
His technique isn’t bad, it needs some work, with practise the buzz roll can be done in traditional, French or German grip. What you should do is freely bounce the stick in whichever grip you use (I use German grip) (while having your index and thumb fingers firmly/sort of loose on the fulcrum which is usually a quarter way up your stick of preference from the bottom) and be sure you have a nice long bounce that fades out, also keeping in mind both hands must be the same tension in your grip and length of buzz (buzz both hands together to start with to get that consistency) when you establish that start practising this as a roll making sure that your hands don’t start one after the other (before the right hand finishes the left hand should start). When you’re comfortable with that start using your middle, ring and pinky fingers as leverage/tension for when you speed up. The book Accents and Rebounds has great descriptions and exercises to help you develop a buzz roll, and yes you usually shouldn’t do the roll in circles
