  • A snare drum roll is one of the first things that drummers want to learn how to do; however, many beginners are discouraged because they think that it is really difficult to learn.
Learning how to do a drum roll on your snare drum is actually really simple. It involves pushing each drum stick against the head of the snare drum continuously.
It will definitely take some practice to do the best snare roll; however, this video will show you, in a step by step manner, how to do a drum roll perfectly!

_"(The drum roll) is actually not (hard to do). Drummers usually learn this within the first few weeks of them even touching a pair of drumsticks."_ SimplySnare
0:13 Thumbs down, abort here. A drum roll might be simple, but one could spend a lifetime trying to perfect it and never be satisfied. And drummers do NOT learn the double stroke rebound accent within even the first few months; accenting the rebounds takes years to get clean and ready for artistic use, and the drummer's long tone is never as good as it could be.
    Fail.

As long as one gets the sound one is looking for who cares how they hold it.
I had some asshole give me shit one day because I wasn't playing the bongos correctly, but I had musicians come up to me an ask me how I got that weird sound outta the Bongos and they asked me to show them how.
Same with drums. My right arm got fucked up in an accident when I was young. I started screwing around with some drums a friend gave me for therapy because regular therapy was boring.
I found out I had a natural talent for them and have been playing for over 50 yrs now.
My father (RIP) drove me nuts trying to teach me how to play golf. Hold the club this way or that way, bla, bla, bla.
My uncle was a pro and told me the object of this game is to get that little white ball into that cup with the least amount of strokes. He said he didn't care if I stuck the club up my ass, as long as I accomplished that goal.
      Same principle here.

Different volumes, maybe some accents here and there and of course change from triplet form and then try 16th note form. Get crazy, have fun and do what you do best because one of my drum teachers the great Gary Chester said to me there's more than one way to skin a cat. Tis a real technique! It exists! I have been drumming for years, years ago someone asked me "can you do a buzz roll" luck for me I used to mess around with it alot. That doesn't mean that I didn't actually play rolls as well. Just that I think can also be fun to just see how good you can make the buzz sound.

What's with the egg-beater circles? What's with showing it to us wrong as if he knows what he's doing? What's with that head? Is it 20 years old? No wonder his tuning is so bad, that head died a long time ago.
If you want to learn how to play a buzz roll or a press roll which is what he's trying to do here in a clumsy way, DON'T WATCH THIS VIDEO TO LEARN HOW!

The side to side circular motion is a thing Buddy and older players called the whipped cream roll, yes. But this is not how to do it. The concept of pressure is not it. The way the sticks sit in the hands is not it. The degree of tension in the fingers and wrists is not it. The consistency of the sound is not it.

6,686 people should find another drum teacher.
Like some other people already said, this is not a 'roll', but a 'buzz', and it doesn't sound fluent at all. Maybe that's because you haven't learned to play the roll fluently (both hands should play at an even volume and preferably do the same motion). This is very hard to do and not something you learn the first few weeks. I know because I teach and only after months or even years (depends on how much practice time one puts into it) do I see my students 'mastering' it.
A very good way to play things evenly is to learn to play left-handed - if you're right handed (and vice versa). This strengthens (rather a muscle memory thing than muscle mass) your weaker hand/arm/fingers so it's more on par with your most used hand.
I'm not bashing you to make you feel bad, but I've seen your other video (5 bad habits) and I'm trying to prevent others from following bad advice. We all need to learn and that only happens by listening to good advice from people with lots of experience or figuring it out ourselves by practicing and listening to what our body tells us (and our friends or family ;)) Please watch some other drum lessons first or buy a good book ... or even better, find a good teacher ... before you start giving any.

  • @ethangambill4013
    @ethangambill4013 Před 9 lety +33

First of all doing circles when you roll is extremely bad technique you want to avoid that at all costs and the head needs to b replaced and needs to either be tuned or needs a dampener such as a wallet and the only two grips for snare players are either match or traditional not a timpani grip

    • @stevegosciniak631
      @stevegosciniak631 Před 9 lety +1

+Craig Campbell I learned about buzz rolls watching a video of a dead percussionist, she played them at the edge, and I do circles with sticks and brushes. nobody is an authority, anyone can play however they want, I use a stick technique I'm fairly certain is hardly used if at all, but with millions of singers throughout history I doubt I invented it, but I'll bet you would all say it's "wrong."

I tried doing a snare drum roll the Simply Snare way on purpose on my old Slingerland Festival Model Snare Drum from 1979. With some practice I could get a buzz roll going to a certain degree. I could do a "whipped cream roll" using that incorrect stick holding technique method. I've seen Buddy Rich(and others) videos in which Buddy used that technique while doing his drum solos. So maybe Simply Snare was not entirely wrong when he did his drum rolls. I also can do rolls the correct way using matched grip or traditional grip. So
please, stop bullying this Simply Snare drummer for what he is teaching in his videos. And please stop hating and trashing this man for doing drum videos that are different from everyone else. Enough of the negative comments folks. THINK POSITIVE!!!

    1) keep all fingers around stick
    2) don't use circular motions-stroke straight down.
    3) thumbs to the side of the sticks
    4) 90 degree angle
    5) keep your elbows comfortably bent for better leverage.
    6) use more wrist. Using your arms too much creates lack of volume in your heights, uneven strokes, and awkward bouncing during diddles.

Once again, your broad idea is spot on "press firmly against the head", yet your details are far fetched and incorrect... Very, very much so...
    1. You use your WHOLE HAND for a drum roll, not just your thumb and your index finger. All the fingers.
    2. The reason your roll "fades in and out" is because you are doing it wrong. Moving your stick "in a circle" (from cardinal north edge to cardinal west edge) does you no good. The only reason you would move the stick during a roll is if you are using a loose roll base (not switching hands too often, not aggressive), and even then, you move towards the MIDDLE so as to allow for the weaker portion of your roll (the end) to have more volume.
    3. Your roll vibration is good, where it doesn't change amounts of hits, or pressure. However your tone is BRAPbrapBRAPbrapBRAPbrap. Even those suckers out. Your crappy sticks aren't helping.
Once again, your broad idea is spot on "press firmly against the head", yet your details are far fetched and incorrect... Very, very much so...

Some people are just awful here. He said that there are many ways, and this is *his* way in *his* opinion. That in itself means he is not wrong. And, some people just want a little nudge in learning something. I'm glad he took the time to help others. :D

His technique isn’t bad, it needs some work, with practise the buzz roll can be done in traditional, French or German grip. What you should do is freely bounce the stick in whichever grip you use (I use German grip) (while having your index and thumb fingers firmly/sort of loose on the fulcrum which is usually a quarter way up your stick of preference from the bottom) and be sure you have a nice long bounce that fades out, also keeping in mind both hands must be the same tension in your grip and length of buzz (buzz both hands together to start with to get that consistency) when you establish that start practising this as a roll making sure that your hands don’t start one after the other (before the right hand finishes the left hand should start). When you’re comfortable with that start using your middle, ring and pinky fingers as leverage/tension for when you speed up. The book Accents and Rebounds has great descriptions and exercises to help you develop a buzz roll, and yes you usually shouldn’t do the roll in circles
