I’ve been out of the proverbial rat race for several years now (thankfully!) After ten years in so-called “higher ed” and twenty in a couple of private IT companies, my take is: “effective” and “meetings” are two words that should never appear adjacent to each other in any context. In my experience, meetings were overwhelmingly for the sake of meetings. Somebody higher up the food chain liked to hear himself/herself talk and those of us unlucky to be at the mercy of that person were obligated to stop any productive activities and go somewhere to sit (or stand!) and listen. Non-attendance was not an option.

Thank you so much for posting this excerpt from another wonderful interview! I’d mentioned this part of this interview to several colleagues and talked through the “but it takes too much time/resources” antibodies with them by asking how much time/resources does the current process consume. The silence in the response is very telling. Change like this can be too much for some organizations and some organizational culture simply cannot withstand any feedback without resorting to labeling it insubordination. Thank you again, I really loved this part of this interview!

Interesting. Writing things out takes a lot of time however. Another way to invite introvert and more shy people to share is to effectively chair the meeting and ask them a lot of questions
