LOS ANGELES _ Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto denied Thursday that he is the creator of bitcoin.
Newsweek published a 4,500-word cover story claiming Nakamoto is the person who wrote the computer code underpinnings of bitcoin, but in an exclusive two-hour interview with The Associated Press, Nakamoto denied he had anything to do with the digital currency.
Nakamoto, 64, said he had never heard of bitcoin until his son told him he had been contacted by a Newsweek reporter three weeks ago. He acknowledged that many of the details in Newsweek's report are correct, including that he once worked for a defense contractor, and that his given name at birth was Satoshi. But he strongly disputed the magazine's assertion that he is "the face behind bitcoin."
"I got nothing to do with it," he said, repeatedly.
Newsweek stands by its story, which kicked off the relaunch of its print edition after 15 months and reorganization under new ownership.
Since bitcoin's birth in 2009, the currency's creator has remained a mystery. The person - or people - behind the digital currency's inception have been known only as "Satoshi Nakamoto," which many observers believed to be a pseudonym.
Bitcoin has become increasingly popular among tech enthusiasts, libertarians and risk-seeking investors because it allows people to make one-to-one transactions, buy goods and services and exchange money across borders without involving banks, credit card issuers or other third parties. Criminals like bitcoin for the same reasons.
For various technical reasons, it's hard to know just how many people worldwide own bitcoins, but the currency attracted outsize media attention and the fascination of millions as an increasing number of large retailers such as Overstock.com began to accept it.
Speculative investors have jumped into the bitcoin fray, too, sending the currency's value fluctuating wildly in recent months. In December, the value of a single bitcoin hit an all-time high of $1,200. It was around $665 on Thursday, according to the website bitcoincharts.com.
After Newsweek posted the story on its website early Thursday, Nakamoto said his home was bombarded by phone calls. By mid-morning, a dozen reporters were waiting outside the modest two-story home on the residential street in Temple City, California, where he lives. He emerged shortly after noon saying he wanted to speak with one reporter only and asked for a "free lunch."
During a car ride and then later over sushi lunch at the AP bureau in downtown Los Angeles, Nakamoto spoke at length about his life, career and family, addressing many of the assertions in Newsweek's piece.
He also said a key portion of the piece - where he is quoted telling the reporter on his doorstep before two police officers, "I am no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss it" - was misunderstood.
Nakamoto said he is a native of Beppu, Japan who came to the U.S. when he was 10. He speaks both English and Japanese, but his English isn't flawless. Asked if he said the quote, Nakamoto responded, "no."
"I'm saying I'm no longer in engineering. That's it," he said of the exchange. "And even if I was, when we get hired, you have to sign this document, contract saying you will not reveal anything we divulge during and after employment. So that's what I implied."
"It sounded like I was involved before with bitcoin and looked like I'm not involved now. That's not what I meant. I want to clarify that," he said.
"Peer-to-peer can be anything," he said. "That's just a matter of address. What the hell? It doesn't make sense to me."

The Bitcoin white paper, published in 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto, exhibits the double spacing after periods quirk. This stylistic choice suggests the author may have learned to type during a period when this convention was prevalent.
Double spacing after periods is a typographical practice stemming from the era of monospaced typewriters. This convention carried over into the early days of digital word processing, particularly among individuals who learned to type on typewriters or were taught typing before the widespread adoption of proportional fonts in the 1990s.
Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto, born in July 1949, falls within the age range of individuals who may have been taught to type using the double-spacing convention.

He’s was my neighbor. After selling on the first big spike, he basically sold his house in 2018 and went all in on Bitcoin. The guy in this video is the real Satoshi Nakamoto.
His full name is Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto 🤘
He proved someone in the SGV can change the world 🌎 💻💰

  • @thebrowndoecorporation5564

Ok let me be clear this guy had nothing to do with encrypted currency. I feel bad for this Dorian guy albeit he is now famous by accident, but it was purely coincidental that his middle and last name happened to be the pseudonym for the real group, and to be very precise it was a group of individuals. In fact the creation of cryptocurrency had nothing to do with the japanese initially with the exception that Japan and China adopted its use early because of barriers to the free flow of monetary value across their respective national boundaries. Satoshi Nakamoto just happened to be the alias name used by the visionary among his collaborators that initiated Bitcoin as a distraction to deflect from the real group of creators who happened to be grad and post grad students from University of Michigan and to some extent work on the project was in Auburn Hils and Dearborn and Ann Arbor Michigan among some other lesser locales; this was in fact conceptualized as an experiment to discover if decentralized encrypted data could be used to transfer given values via p2p processing using what is now colloquially known as blockchain technology as a methodology to resolve a solution for the double spend conundrum. Needless to say it worked, and now humanity has a new method of transfer and ownership of digital values encryptable as a means of exchange for any desired reason for any given party to another across the world or anywhere in cyberspace that has a mobile price chain that happens to trade all hours of the day. This isn't to say that bitcoin is infallible but the magic of software is its use can be upgraded if so desired, but of course. The original design concept was purely experimental though in the end functional, and if Satoshi Nakamoto could be described as an individual, then it should be noted that he or she is only partially satisfied with the outcome of the final written code as not all ideas were thrown in the mix for the final finished product, however some dispute may have been present that bastardized the original notion behind encrypted currency. That is the basic background of how bitcoin and the cryptocurrency industry began, and reasons for not filing patents on the final product is simply because the desired outcome was to achieve a workaround solution to centralized monetary control. It was meant to be without patent so that others would have the opportunity to devise new solutions without restraint by way of a single entity to stifle innovation in the field. Others have filed patents in the field, but to be clear the visionary and the team are not hurting for added value. Pure satisfaction knowing that it worked as a solution could be enough gratification for the efforts made in the world of crypto.
