- A playthrough of Yoko Soft's 1992 unlicensed versus-fighting game for the NES, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.
This video shows two separate playthroughs of the game. The first is played with Guile, and the second (beginning at 8:47) with Ryu.
If you'd like to see playthroughs using Zangief and Chun Li, make sure to check out my video of City Fighter IV: The World Warrior ( • City Fighter IV Sound:... ), which is essentially the same game, but with digital samples added in.
The first known unlicensed NES adaptation of Capcom's 1991 arcade hit saw a physical release in 1992 for the Nintendo Famicom. Developed by Hummer Team, a Taiwanese company specializing in unlicensed console games, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior was the first game to use the so-called "Street Fighter II Engine," which provided the basis for several unlicensed fighters for the NES in the early/mid-1990s. The game was modified and rereleased several times over the following years under the names City Fighter, Master Fighter, and Mario Fighter. It predates the infamous Kart Fighter, based on the same engine, by nearly two years.
So, for a bootleg Taiwanese title developed during the years where the NES first began its commercial decline in the west, how does Street Fighter II fare? Well, surprisingly enough, not terribly. It's certainly clunky, but for a company without any official development tools, it's more playable than you might expect. Many of the special moves from the arcade game are here, and even with the hugely simplified 2-button control scheme, they are pretty easy to pull off. The collision detection and move priority is pretty wonky: characters moves regularly pass through opponents without any hits registering, and the character's movements seem oddly detached from the controls, but overall it functions reasonably well. I'd peg it's playability a slight step below the official Game Boy SF II conversion, but well above the official (impressive-to-look-at yet terrible-to-play) 1997 Master System port.
And those endings are some of the finest examples of Engrish that I've seen in awhile!
The character and background graphics are surprisingly recognizable, and the music isn't too bad, as long as you've gauged your expectations appropriately. Overall, this is really not bad for a bootleg from the early 90s. Though it's not of the quality of the Camerica (Code Masters) or Tengen (Atari) unlicensed NES games, it's well above the standards usually applied to stuff included in those notorious X-in-1 pirate carts. For the sake of sheer novelty, it's a neat game to check out. If you want something in this vein to seriously play, though, I'd totally recommend Kart Fighter. It's obvious that the team had had quite a bit more experience in this line of work by the time they got around to releasing that one.

Back in the day we were told these bootleg games would severely damage the circuits of the NES. How innocent we were! I only got to play a few actual NES bootlegs back then and my console kept on working just fine. Thanks for this, I sought after this game for years while the NES was still the hottest console.
Ik i was being told that too. I called that total BS 😂
I was being told the television would be damaged
It's true sometimes tho isnt it? Some bootlebmg carts run at the incorrect voltage which can put a strain on the console
I'd been told the same things. Sometimes it will make sense. An overused electric console would be damage after using for a long time.
Yep, it could break up the circuit, hence this game was developed to be a ‘Yoko Oh, no!’
Wow, this is honestly not too bad! The fact that they were able to recreate Ryu's theme so well for an NES, and the sprites too is really impressive.
Absolutely a beautiful game! 👌
Also move commands are more accurate replication of original Street Fighter 2 as opposed to the double button press commands by ConiSoft version of NES Street Fighter.
check the master system version by tectoy, I think that one is actually impressive, this one is just garbage I'm afraid :P
In all honesty Hummer Team/Yokosoft did a respectable job with the hardware they had access to. This game is all the more impressive when you consider that not only is it running on 8 bit Famicom hardware, but it's also running off the cheapest possible bog standard of unlicensed NES cartridges. You'd better believe these unlicensed off brand companies didn't have access to all of the latest fancy mappers and other hardware solutions. Often they'll defeat the 10NES lockout chip with a voltage spike or other questionable methods. Unlicensed game publishers would also use the smallest possible PRG and CHR ROMS they could get away with to pinch pennies. Taking into account these obstacles that Hummer Team had to overcome, this game is a pretty impressive technical achievement.
Shadow HUH?
@@moesyzslak2939 One thing I love about these unlicensed ports and other obscure, off-brand/pirate NES games, is that each obscure pirate-made game released is a story in and of itself. There are a lot of unique development challenges to overcome, in terms of hardware and software, distribution, legal issues, etc. There are even stories of these developers being extorted by triads (Chinese mafias), or (at least allegedly) gangsters bankrolling the publishing of a game themselves, whether as a money laundering vehicle or perhaps even a legitimate business opportunity. Generally it's a hell of a lot more interesting story than the 'official' route, where Konami or Capcom pays Nintendo a fortune for an official license, and to manufacture the carts. When everything is strictly by-the-book, and boring as all hell... where's the fun in that?
Well you may be right about that, and yes, hummer team/yoko soft does the best they can when it comes to porting 16-bit ( sometimes 32-bit) titles to the nes..which sometimes doesnt work all to well..but in this case of the street fighter 2 port, well done but they could've done so much better, especially with the music
Master system version better graphics both horrible gameplay
Of course all you need is an everdrive these days
i used to play this a lot when i was a kid! thanks! truly brings back memories!
I remember this game. It was on my cousin's NES clone in the 90's. You know; one of those "999999 games in 1" kind of machines. We played this with her to no end , had incredible fun. It is unbelievable how much fun we had with this, even so the real thing was just down the street, in the arcade.
Thank you for showcasing this. Even if this is just a clone , it has so much impact.
Why are the spectators on Zangief's background bigger than both the fighters?
Because it´s USSR
Ryan Radiation from the Chernobyl Disaster caused some people to develop gigantism.
Lol
That would make sense
Cracked up!🤣
Guile's wife had to make artificial flowers to support the family while Guile was off getting revenge? But she never complained? Hahahahahaha
Otrebor Botanist W 😂😂😂
She took his ass to divorce court, that explains his absence from street fighter III
true love
She never COMLAINED
Selling artificial flowers to make ends meat, how often have we heard that tragic tale 😂

The "W" Font looks like an 'H'

Guile's "Hife"
LOL!

That's what I call Pushing the Hardware.
Look at the Master System version, you maybe will be surprised ;)
@@Kikwatz Yeah no. It had shit tier sound, players jumped as high as the moon, it didnt feel fluid. You want to see real limits pushed. Watch Mortal Kombat on Master System. Oddly MK3 on Master System is worse than the bootleg hummer team version of MK3 on NES in terms of graphics
Eeh..thats way to much of a complement for this bootleg..if you guys want to see "hardware pushing" check out mickey mania 7 , a suprisingly well done bootleg on the nes, based on the snes version btw
@@kiwibro6454 Check out Donkey Kong country on the Nes by Hummer Team, or Alladin, or even fucking street fighter alpha ( goes by another name)
Some of the bootlegs by this Hummer team have 3 layer parallax scrolling on the nes
The game in this video isn't by Hummer tho
If you want to see real nes hardware limit pushed, go check the Street Fighter IV NES bootleg by Gouder co.
It has good graphics, parallax scrolling and very impressive musics
For an unlicensed Taiwanese game from 1992, Street Fighter II is a surprisingly reasonable NES fighter, and far more playable than the official Master System port released several years later.
There was a Master System port?? Christ Almighty, i need sleep but now i have to check that out.
DiabolicalDick Yeah, I put it in the card links if you're interested
This video sent me down a Street Fighter II rabbit hole. I'm actually awestruck that a ZX Spectrum version was somehow cobbled together.
Not quite as good as the PC Engine one
googleboughtmee Nowhere near as good. That one was better than the Genesis port!
This is actually a lot better than I thought it'd be.
Honestly, for a Nes game, it doesnt look half bad!
@psyclapse This one pales in comparison to the other bootleg, NES Street Fighter III: from graphics, sound, and it even revamped some stages and character themes. No wonder that one was given the 36-in-1 treatment with the alt colors selectable. czcams.com/video/XHt9jxewtzY/video.html
it is bad, dogshit bad
Baldo Flores are you blind
C T You think it’s bad because you’re a kid. You didn’t grow up in the Atari and 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System era.
king You only think it’s bad because you’re a child that grew up with the X-Box and PlayStation systems. You weren’t a child like I was during the 1980’s Atari and 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System era.
What STRENGHT! But dont forget there are many guys like you, all over the world
ALLLRIIIGHHH!
Alright that's cool
You've got a lot to learn
Before you beat me
Try again kiddo !!
HAHAHAHA
Are you han enough to fight hith me?
Go to heaven
Still better than SF: The Movie
And the legend of chun li
first of all, SF the movie was perfect!! secondly, I had no idea this was a NES game lol.. thought it was just a SNES game
@@tributethis678 I'm talking about the game not the film
@@Fatal1ty_v2_UK oh LMFAO!!!! I completely forgot about that game HAHAHAHAHA.. That game was dreadfully bad lol.. I completely agree with your statement now :)
@@tributethis678 That's cool.. That game was dreadful! 😂
That ending cracked me up! I got this game for my 9th birthday in 1994 and I didn´t know english back then. I guess I´ll have to play this again!
USA: M. Bison
JAPAN: Vega
?: Viga
China: Viga
Viga is less strange than Ryu practicing "Kong Fu"
Chong Liu uses a helicopter kick 4:12
Zimbabwe 🤣🤣🤣
Nah it is taiwan.
I'm actually impressed with the frame rate and animations. They've remained true to the original even with inferior processing power.
This version of Guile's theme certainly does not go with everything.
It goes with the trash
@Professor Mike AmericanuckRadio you can barely hear it through the sounds if a helicopter though
Bro I almost just cried laughing, gotta turn this into a meme too
That´s my childhood... que buenos recuerdos...
I couldn't stop laughing at that ending. Well done!
Gameplay doesn't look too bad for an NES game, but the music is atrocious.
Mark Schmidt music is what i remember the most from this game, actually like it
Except for Mickey Rooney in Zangief's stage (bottom left)
It's not.
@@ulisessolis3182 Really? I think the opposite. Hearing Ryu's theme on this made me notice it in a good way. Gameplay is decent for what it is but the music could've been made so much more awful.
I honestly think the music is one of the stronger aspects.
I am quite surprised this channel contains unlicensed bootleg playthru
just pure treasure
Considering the system limitations and the resource limitations Yoko likely had, this is actually a pretty impressive port. Trying to make sense of the ending narratives always made my head hurt, though. Nice video!
Thanks! :)
De-make haha
This is how I knew and play street fighter back in the days. It's pretty accurate in move list, music even the ending. There's also super street fighter 2 for nes.
My reaction to seeing someone try to run Street Fighter II on the NES:
"Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."
I've just posted an "SNES recreation" of all of the endings from this NES bootleg version of SF2 - check it out! czcams.com/video/9NXl-ikGjgs/video.html
Yo crecí jugando esto, increíble las horas de juego, diversion y frustración que uno pasaba jugando a la famicon
LOVE that ending text! Ryu wants to be competent wrestler and has no job. Officially canon now.
Guile has became a good father in the end. XD
This is the first Street Fighter I played. I was 5 years old. My dad bought a NES in 1994. I played it for years until NES was broken down. I still keep it even after 28 years under my bed but I can't fix it... Street Fighter is our childhood....
Everyone who sees Ryu wonders " Where does this guy come form ? " LoL 😂
I played this game when I was a child. This is the only Street Fighter game in my console back then.
For an unlicensed game this really isn't bad at all. Could be better though, but with a bit of spit and polish it could have been quite a respectable official release.
R GG, Nah.
Oh I'd definitely spit on it... :P
Sorry my bad english. My dad gave it to me back 25 years ago. Now he is dying for cancer, but I managed to have my old N8 bits and that cartridge until today. Thanks for the video, I'm showing it to my parents via social media, to remember those days.
• Ryu's goal is to be a "wrestler"
• Guile doesn't go home or become a family man.
• "Viga" and 3 bosses are dead...
Downfall timeline detected
Guile's dream of becoming a family man isn't in this game.
*Real sad boi hours*
*pLaYiNg The rOle aS gOod FatHer*
Have always thought this is an official release when I was younger haha
Clássico!
Tenho a fita de nintendinho guardada até hoje!
Cara parabens essa fita é uma Reliquia , Classico mesmo ,
I played different Street Fighter bootlegs for NES and this was the best by far! You could feel real control of the characters👌 very nice to play. You had the superpowers you could hit and grab, it was difficult but fair enough to have fun. That recreation of the Ryu's theme and Chunli's one, listening to them as an adult and with experience in music, they did a beautiful job. Sound Fx were heavy emulating some hits with drum kicks 😂👌👌👌 Thanks for this video!!!
I remember buying a NES clone in 96 (Brazil), which came with a cartridge with a ton of games (most of them repeated) and this SF2 was one of those games.
Hell, later I even purchased a MK3 for the NES.
BRASIL SIL SIL .
Oq nós nos divertimos na casa do amigos jogando videogame essa geracao nutelada NUNCA vai entender.
What was the NES Clone from Brazil called?
If they made this game for the NES when it came out, It would have made millions.
With all the spelling errors, at least they spelled "congratulations" correctly.
and not "Conglaturations", like in the NES version of the original Ghostbusters game
This is actually better than Street Fighter V Arcade Edition.
@Melo DeathMetal: What's not wrong with it?
@Melo DeathMetal: The clunkiness, different game mechanics, chip damage during block like it's Mortal Kombat...
I can go on and on, but I have stuff to do in the process.
Este juego me dio muchas tardes de diversión, nostalgia pura...
The memories... flooding in...
Terrific graphics for a 8 bit game. Love it
This was the first Street Fighter I play when i saw the intro of arcade version and the blonde guy throw the punch i almost crap my pants
The intro showed what was going on in Final Fight
Cody verses some other guy
@@oldstylegaming4655 exactly
Back then this already looked like 1080p for me. I spend many hours playing this
Zangief theme! Lol!
Sounds like a circus
Keeping in mind I believe the first fighting game on NES was Karate Champ the graphics and sound are impressive.
E.Honda’s headbutt sound always reminded me of the referee from Karate Champ - “FULL POINT!”
Cuando era muy feliz en mi power station y polistation jajajaj tiempos inmemoriables :'D
i remember playing this game when i was 8 or 9 years old.. that time i only got super mario and sf2 to play.. i cleared this so many times and write down all the text for each character and credit even tho i dnt know what it means.. LOL..
chun li is OP here.. i have a combo that can instant KO any1.. :D
Garrythe sf2 on nes is shit nes is only good for mario lol
In some countries making someone play this game still the best method of execution
Micronations don't count
Great Video, nice to see SF2 Ported to NES!
Genial port, sobre todo por la nostalgia. Recuerdo que venia preinstalado en algunas consolas clones de NES. La jugabilidad era terrible pero se lo recuerda con genial cariño.
When I was a lad, my family was working poor.
Sure, we were getting by, but the "extras" never came by as much. I always got the older gen consoles when the next gen came out.
SNES released, I finally got the NES.
N64 released, I got the SNES.
PS2 came out, I got the N64.
My parents loved me and I was grateful realizing that they're doing their best (unlike my asshole sister) and I played the hell out of all of them.
I was a Street Fighter II goon back in the day. Every time I went to the arcade at the mall by my grandparents house, I headed straight for the Street Fighter II section. 20 machines all packed. I'd jump on and got killed pretty much instantly by the high school and college kids.
Anyway, the long winded point I'm trying to make is that I would of been all over this. I used to argue with my friends that Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat were eventually coming to the NES only to get mocked without mercy.
Good times.
AVGN needs to review this.
This is not too bad comparing to many of his complains.
The Nerd doesn’t always review a whole lot of pirated/bootleg games and hacks. But this type of stuff is sometimes in James & Mike Mondays.
"what were they thinking!!!"
It seems almost criminal that I didn't know a NES version of this game even existed.
For what this is, I think it's pretty good.
Street Fighter 2 Welfare Edition.
Appropriate title, as Ryu has no job.
Bwahaha, that ending text for Ryu.
I like how Ryu jumps up then goes forward in the air!😂😂😂
That Guile ending was deep. Holy hell.
In the end becomes a family man
Literally had no idea they even had this for the NES. Crazy.
Wow this was back when Bison was Vega, Vega was Balrog and Balrog was Bison. I thought that was only before it was released. Someone really did their homework.
chunli doesnt wear undies in this version..
You're a very perceptive individual.
The NES/FC limitation somehow gives us that... N I C E.
*h* *e* *h* *e* *b* *o* *a* *h*
Ace Ive neeeeeever seen or heard of a NES version. Got to love a demake! Thanks for sharing
Nah. it ain't M. Bison.
Nor is it his japanese alias Vega.
It's VIGA. Got that? Original villian.
I remember playing it in a Famiclone back then ! pain in the ears...
back in the 80's this game on the nes was sooo lit! and i want it so badly
This was the first version I came across...
I would have been dissapointed as kid! but now it can be looked as impressive for an 8 bit street fighter!
When the spinning bird kick sounds like an actual bird flapping its wings.
They got the intro, ryu and chun-li's themes correct, even the fighter screen, but failed on Guile, Zangief and 'viga'
Oh man! Miss my grade school days!
"Viga" lmao. Also i never knew Ryu wanted to be a wrestler, lol.
lul u beat me to it
Yea i was like what the hell, lol. These endings are unintentionally hilarious.
Yeah, we never knew till this pirated version his true ambition. That and all he had was Kong Fu clothes.
the legend guess they couldn't get Vega right lol
@@TheOneSymphony You just wait till the sequel where we find out he's Viga the Carpathian and they fight him in a painting.
Yoko Soft made the building scene for Nintendo 8 bits but Nintendo 16 bits never had it!!
it was the first game and the first fight game I'd played on my nintendo when I was 5 years old
I still play video games but those were the days, the level of happiness was immeasurable
Este juego me marco la infancia como lo recuerdo me gustaba mucho jugarlo acabando de hacer la tarea
I loved to play this game
Chunli's theme is good as ever, her upskirt is even better in 8 bit.
Im still trying to find where that ending song came from...
I love it
The music for chun li's stage was great!
Don't forget Mario Fighter III, a hack where GRAND DAD appeared as one of the characters in the game
I met this franchise in my childhood thanks to this game
Kids today will never know the struggle
Dude, I've seen higher quality graphics on my Atari 2600... turned on with no cartridge inside.
Actually, my man, the struggle's taken on a more advanced form-kids is bitching about lag and a broken netcode.
0:50 Zangief and Guile in the city of Giants!
Curious how a real port would have actually been. Remember there is a decent 8 bit port of the game on the PC Engine (Turbo Graphix)
I had my mom buy this game for me for my Christmas present. I didn’t understand that I’d get an entirely different game than the ones they have in arcade or SNES.
Didn’t come with a manual either. I didn’t know there would only be 4 characters. It wasn’t what I wanted, but I learned to enjoy it.
The difference between 8 and 16 bit was quite staggering lol
Get outta town! Really?
Not really , look up the PC Engine version of Street Fighter II , it looks as good as the Genesis version.
@M D ummm the PC engine is 8 bit
It is more than just bits. That is one factor, but the CPU and amount of RAM available and other hardware improvements are major factors as well. The Genesis and SNES had a faster CPU and more RAM than the NES which allowed for much better graphics and performance.
Now I want to see Street Fighter 2 on the Atari 2600
"Go home and be a family man!"
"No, really, you should! it's what I'm doing after I've beaten everyone else!"
Spinning bird kick sounds like a helicopter xD
Dante Leonhart GET TO THA CHOPPA!
Helicopter kick
Spinning bird kick is making helicopter sounds OMG 😂😂😂
Zangief theme music though 😂
i remember play this with my friends, thanks for the memories.
Ryu's Tatumaki sempu-kyaku actually sounds like an helicopter here 😂
Chun li sounds like one too. I think you mean her
Not as bad as i expected
So this basically a colorized version of the game boy game
No
I still preferred the gameboy version
OMG I remember the first time when I played this back in 98 when I first moved to the Philippines. I was surprised cuz I knew it was never made for the NES/Famicom.
The black man at the title screen still doesn't win
You mean the green man (The 'Uncredible' Hulk...). :D
