Favorite fantasy book series ever! The audio books are done very well.

Thanks for this review! I’m a Dresden Files fan and am looking forward to playing this game!
Start with the AUDIOBOOKS, specifically book #3, Grave Peril. James Marsters (I think he was in the Buffy TV show) did an amazing job of bringing all the characters to life.

Don't watch the TV show. Read the books.

The books are great, I highly recommend them. The TV show and comics are so-so at best, fun for superfans maybe.

We don't mention the tv series. Lol
I agree about the comic bools being only alright, although I particularly enjoyed Wild Card, and more a collectible for big fans.

You always have 13 fate but on various levels you start the game with a certain amount in available and a certain amount in spent. So in your example of playing on normal you start with 8 available fate and the other 5 are spent.
I like your review of it being a puzzle, that is exactly the comment I've heard from other people who haven't read the books but like the game.
Love the books, like the graphic novels, the TV series was good if you divorce yourself from comparing it to the books, judge it on its own. As a humorous aside the author says if you really want to enjoy the series skip the first two books and start with the third he was still learning and its full of tropes. I think he does himself a disservice but the books do get better and better as the series goes on.

Important note about the Fate! Poor Bryan, playing with fewer fate tokens than required...
As much as I love the Dresden Files, the game isn't getting played much, as there's only really theme if the players inject it. The game itself is a puzzle, but it's also got a LOT of luck in it due to the Fate dice, and you *have* to take risks. Which means, it's very very hard to win if you roll poorly too often.

So is the game theme based on the books, show, or graphic novels?

The game is from the books. Each “book” in the game is exactly that-one of the books. The art (excepting the box cover) is from the graphic novels which are themselves based on the books.

Start with the books before the TV series

First two books are kinda cliche and cheesy but by book 4+ is some of the best writing in fantasy.

The books are really great. I liked the TV show but I'm definitely in the minority on that. Paul Blackthorne played Harry (and what an awesome name that is :) )

Paul Blackthorne gives a very nice performance, but the show takes a lot of liberties with the premises and details of the books. It's a very loose adaptation, at best. (Harry's staff is -- or at least appears to be -- a hockey stick, for reasons undisclosed to the viewer.)

@TheLastestRetro So did you read any of those books?

  • @hitomikojiru

Avoid the TV show at all costs. It has nothing to do with the books other than names.
