Taemin’s smile always makes me smile. He looks so happy in his element. Only 40 more days!
This wasn’t the first dance practice in Kpop but it definitely started the trend. The dance was so intricate that everyone searched out the practice to see the choreo properly. Once the companies saw how much people enjoyed it then EVERYONE started releasing dance practices for every song.
Since you love dance practices so much I would recommend watching Taemin’s Just Me and You MV at some point in your journey. It’s a dance-focused video that was shown during his concert and it was released to the public on his birthday after he was in army. He expresses emotion so well through dance!

I miss raw dance practices like this. Before they became performance videos. 🥺

Yes, Taemin's shirt is an iconic part of their "Lucifer" dance practice. He even brought the look back in 2017 in his "Move" dance practice video. When SM released the "Move" dance practice, one of the first things Shawols always mentioned was how it brought back memories of "Lucifer." The trippy feeling you get from Taemin's shirt, isn't because of the video quality, it's just something about black and white strips that the camera has a hard time deciding what to do with the pattern. I have seen that same thing happen with black and white striped clothing and objects often in videos.
You're right, SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice video was the very first dance practice video ever in the Kpop industry to be released specifically for fans. They had never made a dance practice video that wasn't just for them to watch, so to SHINee in 2010 this was just a dance practice, it wasn't a performance video like what you see in "dance practice" videos today. SHINee is the group that started the dance practice video trend, and they are why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D
This video was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then, dance practice videos were usually only filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience, and it most definitely wasn't meant to be an MV quality production. But SM realized that fans were starting to copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too.
Just another way, SHINee influenced the industry and changed Kpop forever. :D
SM released this video as part of their "Lucifer" promotions, so it's the same version of the choreography and song you see in the MV. You're just seeing it without any cuts or edits, so you may not have seen it as well as you are now. However, to SHINee, even still today, dance practices are really just dance practices. They save their energy for where it counts, for MVs and live performances. What you saw in their dance practice is only a fraction of what this dance is really like. They are experts when it comes to maintaining stable vocals while dancing 110% for hours on end. People never really understand why "Lucifer's"choreography gets so much hype, until they see SHINee perform it live. That is why SHINee are live performance legends.
If you want to see where SHINee truly shines you have to watch their iconic performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert. To see them go full out and really blow you away with their talent, you need to see a live performance. Check out their performance at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, czcams.com/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/video.html.
The "Lucifer" in SHINee's song (represented by the light trail or smoke you see in the MV) is supposed to be a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lyrics say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (If you notice, they are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles.
In the choreography you see them trying to fight against her powers and resist her attempts to make them bend to her will, etc., that's why you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot -- for example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them. And they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc.
Because people often wonder why, the part where you see Jonghyun standing still was when he is belting one of the most epic high notes you will ever hear. As you know, Jonghyun is one of the BEST vocalists in the industry, as well as Onew, so during those parts of the song Onew and Jonghyun were just pausing or slowing down in order to focus on their voices. A lot of SHINee's choreography is designed to allow for moments where the members flex their vocals. SHINee are some of the best vocalists in the business and they are known for, not only being impressive dancers, but having amazing stamina and vocal range. That's why they are able to perform this live while dancing this intensely and still sound flawless.
"Lucifer" is actually know as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover, even still today, because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise, which are designed to hit every beat of the song. And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and its flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," Part 1: czcams.com/video/-TLCK7KbLus/video.html and Part 2: czcams.com/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/video.html. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our more difficult choreography and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D
SHINee are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee where designed to be SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to create the trend.
SHINee started the synchronized dance trend. And they made the industry realize that if anyone else wanted to compete they needed to up their game. Just think, when Taemin joined SM at 11 years old he didn't even have any dance training -- up until then, all his skills were self-taught by watching dancers on TV shows -- and by the time he debuted less than 3 years later in 2008, he was already showing everyone that his skill level was on par with, or even surpassed, many professional dancers who had been dancing for years. And the fact that the other members are able to keep up with Taemin and dance just as well, that's just shows SHINee's natural talent. SM really hit gold when they formed this group, and I don't think it can ever be duplicated in the same way again.
Fun fact: As you can see, "Lucifer" was before SM had their new fancy dance practice room that all of their dance practices are now filmed in. Before those room existed, you always knew when it was an SM artist because of that iconic cloud wallpaper/screen. The cloud background in all of SM's most historic dance practice videos is classic SM.

Woot woot!!! The grandfather of dance practices and the infamous and iconic trippy shirt!! Btw, I commented a link on the MV reaction of them doing some of the choreo under water-it’s only just over 30 seconds, so maybe you can add it as a bonus on your next SHINee reaction? 😁

I wonder why everyone thinks Shinee started the trend with dance practices. I'm pretty sure the first dance practice was actually released a year or two before by TVXQ with their Purple Line. Please, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
