To understand what is happening in SHINee's "I Want You" MV you need to know that it had only been about 5 1/2 months when this MV came out since Jonghyun died and this album -- which was part of their 10th anniversary celebration in 2018 -- is all about how SHINee and Shawols have been grieving and are finally ready to begin to heal and come out of the darkness into the light. The album is called The Story of Light, and the whole album is about how the members are learning to find happiness and light again as they honor Jonghyun's memory.
The story in their "I Want You" MV is connected to the story from their previous release "Good Evening" MV. The story in"Good Evening" is about the grieving process and how the members all dealt with Jonghyun's death in the public eye. In "I Want You" it's a continuation of that story, however, now it's about how the members are learning to find happiness again. Like in Alice in Wonderland, where Alice follows the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole and discovers a magical wonderland, in "I Want You" the members follow the fox into the magical well on a journey to find happiness. The fox represents Jonghyun's spirit as he helps guide the SHINee members and Shawols through life.
When you watch "Good Evening" you will notice, the forest, the well and the fox are all things you also see in that MV. Therefore, the story continues from one MV to the next.
This MV is full of a range of emotions because that is exactly how the members are feeling at this time. You should look at the song as bitter sweet, not necessarily sad -- it has a hopeful, happy theme.
You also see SHINee in space catching diamonds because the diamonds represent SHINee, Shawols and Jonghyun. SHINee's symbol is a diamond and the group was given the name SHINee because the members shine like stars. They are collecting diamonds to show just how important the group and everything to do with SHINee is to them. Jonghyun is now our star and "Diamond in the Sky."
One reason SHINee are in space is thought to be because being in space is closer to Heaven and closer to Jonghyun. Plus, Jonghyun really loved the moon. It was even said that the moon turned a pearl aqua color -- SHINee's fan color -- the day of Jonghyun's funeral. And fans took comfort in the fact that this meant that his spirit had made it to Heaven and that he was now at peace.
This MV is supposed to show how SHINee sees themselves and how they are dealing with everything that happened, which is different than how in "Good Evening" they feel the general public sees them.
Everything from SHINee's Story of Light album is linked and the entire album is about different things to do with Jonghyun and the journey they have been on for the past 10 years, etc. And even Key's solo debut "Forever Yours" MV and Face album and Onew's solo debut "Blue" MV and Voice album are thought to be connected to these MVs.
This comeback is part of a three part release containing 3 mini albums with 5 songs each. To promote their The Story of Light trilogy album they had 3 comebacks, each 2 weeks apart, to showcase their lead track on each of their albums. "Good Evening" and "All Day All Night" were their comeback tracks from Episode 1, " I Want You" and "Who Waits for Love" were their comebacks from Episode 2 and Episode 3 was "Our Page" and "Tonight". Their comeback lasted 6 weeks to represent the fact that it was SHINee's 6th "full length" album. We were so spoiled this comeback; it felt so nice to see them doing what they love again. At the end of the six weeks they released a special final MV with their song "Countless." "Countless" was an epilogue track that was added to their repackaged Story of Light album.
Ahhhh!!! Love SHINee’s Story of Light!!! It’s very emotional for many Shawol as it was the first album after we lost Jjong and the last album to feature his voice. This was their sixth album, released as three EPs and a full-length Epilogue. The first part was led with the single "Good Evening" and featured some truly unique choreography by Koharu Sugawara.
“I Want You” was featured on the second part of the trilogy. According to the members, the second part of the album represents the group's view of themselves, while the first part reflected what others think of them.
The third and last part of the album is fronted by the single "Our Page" and is a beautiful tribute. It is heart wrenching and a tear jerker, but is hopeful and beautiful all at once. The song’s Korean title translates to “The Words You Left Behind” and feature lyrics written by Jinki, Kibum, Minho, and Taemin, along with Kenzie (whom they’d written with often). The MV doesn’t have subtitles, but I very much encourage you to grab some tissues and read them. “When I look back on the path that I walked along, I see five folded hands, tears, and memories.” SHINee has always, is currently, and will forever remain FIVE.

The album is amazing The Story of Light Epilogue album is so underrated. I am looking foward for SHINee to preform songs from this album in concert since they haven't yet. It was the album they released before Minho, Onew, and key went to the military.
I've been daydreaming with that, I really want to see I want you, Countless, JUMP, Chemistry and Good Evening in a concert, that'd be epic! And maybe like a fusion of others like All day all night, electric and Drive .... The Story of LIght series is TOO good! They can do so much with it!

Oh wait they did a VCR preformance for Chemistry from The Story of Light, and damn it should have been released it was mostly in black and white. It was a cool video that was shown in an online concert during the pandemic. I hope it gets released someday. The lyrics on this song are lol about chemistry and some lines were unexpected
As far as I know, this MV should be watched with 3D glasses. So, you might want check it out that way.
This is the first song I liked from them when was getting into them. I didn’t see mv or listen on Spotify etc or heard any of their songs. was watching a series of theirs and they were driving and this song was playing, didn’t even know was from them just vibed with it

I've seen so many shinee mvs and heard so many songs but this is still one of my favorites. I love the vibe and the styling and the song so much!! But yes, this is the second mv in a trilogy of an album called the story of light. It's a very great album. In these mvs if you see a fox it's meant to represent Jonghyun in a way since in a story he really liked called "The Little Prince" there was a fox and he really connected with it.
