How to Disassemble a Battery to Extract Lithium

- In this video you will learn how to extract the lithium metal from a double AA non-rechargeable (primary) lithium battery. Just be careful when taking it apart because while the top part (positive cover) is being removed, the battery can get hot; therefore, gloves are recommended. The steel casing is very strong, so it takes a lot of effort to peel back. You can find these batteries at most hardware stores, grocery stores, or retail stores.

A wonderfully well put together video which explains how an ordinary object in our lives has extraordinary properties! Thank you so much!
Make sure not to penetrape the wrapper while stripping the case, if the anode and cathode are connected is can start the lithium strip to begin heating up uncontrollably. Then it needs to be removed ASAP or risk becoming useless or possibly dangerous. Great video!
omg thank you. You saved my life dude. I noticed that it was getting hotter and found an empty jar on one side. When I came back, there was a small fire, and I immediately put it in the jar and closed the lid
@@Deevial Happy to help. the guy below with the comment about using a pipe cutter may be onto something I think. Haven't tried it yet, though. Good luck man, but if you make a mistake when it is mostly done and it heats up you can still get the case off and unroll the wrapper with time to spare.

@@dariuscarastoian745 it should work, the material within the battery doesn’t change if its dead or alive. Did you use a lithium battery??
@@Suuuppyyy These batteries generate electricity via a chemical reaction between the cathode and the anode, so the lithium isn't 'used up', but it is converted to a different chemical form which won't react like pure lithium.

I want to know that where we can store the lithium after taking it out because it react with moisture and water

does it have to be a new battery? Is the lithium the same composition if the battery has an internal short?
Yes I believe so, because even batteries that were new but I hadn't opened in one year plus did not work. However, you could always try a used battery and that is actually something I would like to attempt. As for the internal short, most of the time the quality of the reaction is much lower. Whenever I accidentally short the battery and it gets really hot, the lithium inside typically just smokes in the water and never catches fire.
@@pyrochemminer3453 That is what I was really getting at....would the reaction be the same if the battery were dead. My guess is that the reaction would not be the same as a battery is a chemical reaction by design and therefore the composition (the formula) has to change...so the amount of desired active ingredient is always changing. Evidenced by your new batteries, while still in the packaging..were changing just sitting. That also means the batteries of different manufacturers is also different as each is tweeking the formula to gain a competitive advantage or cost reduction at your and my expense.
@@nonperishables5870 I agree because non-rechargeable or primary batteries only allow ions and electrons to flow once. The pure lithium metal is the anode; the ions will flow inside the battery from the lithium to the iron disulfide (cathode) and the electrons will go from the anode through the circuit and into the cathode. Once this occurs and the battery is dead, the lithium will not have the same properties.
When talking about internal shorting, that would be when I accidentally cause the battery to discharge at a rapid rate; thus heating up the battery and changing the composition. This explains why it does not behave the same in the water.
did you weigh the lithium metal strip?
I don't think I did
But when peeling the lithium off it was thinking if it can quickly store it in a sealed tupperware container to let any air or moist in for storage.
uknow so one day I can use them in the future
(9 months after lmao) If you do this and want to store the lithium put it in mineral oil, it won't react with it and will be able to be stored safely

Do dead batteries work? Can you show how to use one for anything else?
Dead batteries don't work as one person said
What are the dangers involved in this (other than the fire and explosion) is it more dangerous to breathe in this smoke than that of firewood?
If you’re reacting lithium with water, absolutely. The lithium hydroxide smoke that comes off is HIGHLY CORROSIVE. Breathing it in is FAR worse than breathing in smoke from firewood. It probably won’t kill you, but irritation might cause issues either breathing and swallowing.
@@Vulcan3027 was expecting some half-sarcastic smart ass remark.

Is this gonna work with dead AAAs? Also, is there a way to stop the tarnishing by putting the strips in oil or a bag? I want to be able to make it a powder.
I have never tried it with dead ones. However, I am very certain it will not work and definitely not to the extent shown in the video. Also to preserve it in oil you would need a larger chunk of lithium; the thin strip found in the battery will still tarnish since it has much more surface area per amount.
@@pyrochemminer3453 after 3 months and 5 attempts, I can confirm that dead batteries don’t work. The lithium strip fizzles in water and makes a cloud of nasty smelling sulfur. I’ve gotten some success with AAAs but nothing like the video.

Me who has to dismantle a old battery in engineering class: 💀
I have lots if lithium-ion batteries from laptops. When I took the lithium strips out of a few of them. not a single one exploded when I threw them in water.
Pretty disappointing. In fact I have removed lithium from batteries in the past and it really ignited big time when I threw water on it.
I think the way rechargable Li-ion batteries used in laptops, etc. are not designed in the same way as single use rolled Li+ batteries. They can use liquid substrates or other types, which I think makes the cylindrical design easier the simply extract virtually pure Li metal. This is also an issue with cellphone type batteries using Li. AFAIK only the laptop batteries with tubular shapes have lithium, many other use NiMH, etc. AA+AAA Li batteries are easiest and cheapest to get good product.
I smashed it on a ground it's burning. What do I do
I know I'm 5 months late, but uh, ain't much you can do. If you put water on it, it explodes. You might be able to smother it if you have a way to, but make sure it's something that won't catch fire/melt. Also, the fumes are highly corrosive, so DO NOT BREATHE IN THE FUMES. Won't kill you (most likely), but it will seriously mess up your lungs if you breathe in enough.
