    In school, I once did a science project on which brand of battery lasts the longest. The three brands I used was Duracell, Energizer, and Rayovac. I put them in identical flashlights and left them on. The Rayovac battery got so hot it melted, and Duracell lasted just a bit longer than Energizer. Note to self, when buying batteries get Duracell.

  • @freerangemtb
    @freerangemtb Před 6 lety +94

    Alkaline batteries aren't going to react that much, as we saw. The components that are used are manganese oxide (positive terminal or cathode) and zinc (negative terminal or anode). I believe these chemicals, though I'm no chemist and certainly did not do well in chemistry, does not generally have in explosive results. I think the real dangers with batteries comes in when you start playing around with modern Lithium and NiMH batteries. I've seen videos where someone stabbed such a battery with a nail and it literally started blasting fire like a firework almost immediately. This is also the type of battery that was causing Samsung such heartache with its Galaxy Note 7 product.
    This was probably your most "edge of your seat" type of video that I have seen y'all make so far. I kept worrying that Nate was going to get seriously hurt. It got me thinking that you guys need to start doing Mythbusters-style setups for your experiments. Haha!
    -Brian

    • @ViviSectia
      @ViviSectia Před 6 lety +3

      It's not just Samsung that uses them. Almost all cellphones use Lithium batteries and have the same issue as the Galaxy Note 7s along with many other electronics that use them. They explode due to damage to the very thin walls of the battery which usually comes from overcharging them to the point that they swell up enough to damage the walls of the battery or just a bad design to begin. It causes short circuits and heat buildup to the point that the lithium ignites resulting in the same thing that happened in this video but with more lithium and inside what is basically a pouch of metal foil.

    • @consolehacker54
      @consolehacker54 Před 6 lety +1

    • @GRBtutorials
      @GRBtutorials Před 6 lety

      All alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and theoretically francium) will react violently with water. Lithium is the least reactive, and the violence of the reaction grows as you go down the periodic table (the same order I put them), except francium, which would be a bit less reactive than caesium (it's radioactive and rapidly disintegrates, so we can't do the experiment, it's just what the theory says). Search for "alkaline metals in water" and you'll see the explosions.

    • @freerangemtb
      @freerangemtb Před 6 lety

      Jack Place, you are correct. I'm not sure why I typed just oxide. I wonder if I read the word oxide elsewhere as I was typing my reply. I don't profess to be a chemistry person by any means. In fact, I have just a basic understanding of chemicals. I'm surprised I got this much correct, haha!

      Manganese dioxide (also known as pyrolusite) and Ammonium chloride (this one smells the same as amonia in aqueous solutions and just a little bit in its solid form). None of those are toxic when handled with gloves. It is just the MnO2 that is annoying as it stains and is a pain in the a** to clean up after it dried up. Bloody thing wont dissolve in anything and it stains things brown.

    I'm not one to complain about free content, so I won't. I would however like to submit a request for some more complex in depth type of builds or experiments. I'm sure it can be difficult given that you guys upload a new video every day but every once in a while would be great. Things like the styro-slicer or the HHO generator. Those are the kind of videos I stick around for. Anyways thanks for the uploads and I look forward to seeing what's coming in the future.
