This was originally a duet with Bryan White; then re-cut as a single with Bryan as backup vocals...Mutt Lange (known for producing AC/DC, Foreigner, Def Leppard, etc) who was married to Shania produced all of her stuff, too...Shania “The Woman in Me” and Bryan White “So Much for Pretending”
The backing vocals? They were sung by Mutt Lange her husband and record producer at the time. Shania and Mutt did ALL of the vocals. It was her birthday the day they shot this and the orchestra broke out into "Happy Birthday" while they were shooting the scene while she walks down the stairs in front of the orchestra.
Mutt has produced several AC/DC albums including "Back In Black" All of the best Def Leppard albums, Micheal Bolton, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Foreigner, The Cars, Britany Spears, Maroon 5, Muse, and many others. Mutt was literally worth half a billion dollars when Shania met him but she didn't know who he was or anything about him at first. Shania and Mutt wrote every song. Shania provided most of the lyrics and the basic melodies for the songs while Mutt handled recording and arranging the songs. Mutt is well known for getting the best possible vocal performances out of singers. If you don't know Shania's story you should check it out. She grew up dirt poor and was always hungry as a child. Her stepfather was very abusive and beat her mother regularly. When Shania was 22 both of her parents were killed in a car wreck. Shania became an instant parent to her two younger brothers and younger sister and had to give up singing to raise her siblings. Shania is pretty there's no doubt. She's the prettiest woman I've ever seen but she has proven to be tough as nails. She bucked all of the Nashville "rules" and did things her way and you see how everything turned out.
Even if you don't do a reaction, watch/listen to the other version of this, where Shania does a real duet with Bryan White. This song is even better as a duet.
