    I still can't believe that with a mouse click I have a FRONT ROW SEAT to these, Dave's AWESOME performances. I remember very well before downloading music and YT how it was a rather "Big Deal" to seek out incredible Live musical performances as these and you had to make an effort to show up IN PERSON, Fully Clothed and "make a Night of it" too of course. It was also FAR more expensive but you know what? WE WERE GRATEFUL! Yeah, I know, I sound like a ranting old "boomer".

    • @AnnoyingCritic-is7rp
      @AnnoyingCritic-is7rp Před 13 dny +1

      @@AnnoyingCritic-is7rp Well, I see this channel as the channel to come to when you want to really HEAR the gear extensively, Expertly and thoroughly pushed through its capabilities by a "Pro Level" player but, yeah, it takes more Time and patience for sure.

    I don't know if others can relate to this, but while I can listen to a guitarist alone and be impressed, or be able to appreciate certain elements, I don't enjoy just listening to it, for any length of time. However, I not only enjoyed this, but found it highly listenable. I was laying here tired, started the video, and went on listening to it in the background, while doing other things, such as reading articles, and checking things on social media. And kept forgetting what was playing. It was soothing and enjoyable sounds in the background.
    I'm sure the amp is great, but it isn't the amp that accomplished this. I wish I could play like that. Amazing.

      I can, I find with these videos they can sound self indulgent. Dave just looks and sounds like he's been sucked into another world and to be fair I can listen for hours too!!

    • @damonstewart70
      @damonstewart70 Před 6 dny

      Yeah he's, "the real world" guitarist review guy. He's not technically perfect. But his tones sound good WITH A BAND!!! That's the most important I get from his channel. I used to do a lot of shredding, I mean I was almost at paul Gilbert racer x days levels. But in THE BANDS I WAS PLAYING IN. We played go-go(jam band funk style,from Washington dc), old and new r&b,classic rock Ala hendrix, mountain, cream. As well as originals. This was about 15 yrs ago. My keyboard player whom was from DC and a dear friend of mine. Told me that I had to find a tone fit for the band. Which resulted in less distortion and good power amp gain which is cleaner. I got tones very similar to Dave's. More along the lines of johñ Scofield, "jolene". So yeah Dave gets,"gigging " tones. Because let us guitar players remember IT'S ABOUT THE AUDIENCE ENJOYING THE BAND... peace party ppl,see ya later

    Hi Dave,just watched this and was impressed by the voicing,and I understand how you can get lost in the moment! I do some days when just finding my way around the fretboard,3 or 4 hours no problem,hands hate me after tho(arthritis!)but I rest overnight and maybe go again later in the day. I know it's cheeky but I watch and listen closely to snippets of your playing and try to insert them into my twangy noise to improve and try different things,some days I'll play to or three notes and it'll remind me of something I've heard and then use it to practice with and then add to.
    This is all for my fun as I'm in no way to public playing I just enjoy the thrill of maybe making a pleasant bit of noise that pushes me to add more,I've found lately I'm using a lot of neck pickup,just love the creamy tones I can get. Also I'm beating a dean Evo into submission as it was a banana necked g string machine head missing 20 quid practice thing,like you I find a 'new' instrument will show you secrets it has already learned! Oh and stunning playing mate!

    Nice playing there Dave, sweet!
    I'm looking into this amp, but probably the EX version of this amp in case I decide on a footswitch later on, and for its apparent upgraded speaker.
    Like I mentioned before, it was tough to sell my Blackstar Silverline Special 50, but it really lacked the bang for the bucks where I've been watching reviews on this Gen 3 Katana, and love some of the Tube Screamer settings you can download from the community using the Boss software. It has more features like the power to change the wattage, better and more varied voicings, and the ability to change those voicings; I feel it is pretty unlimited. I just couldn't get anything I liked out of the Silverline except a slight variation of either the previous voicing, or the next (For example, Super crunch wasn't all that different than the OD1 when gain was pushed..), not to mention no looping for FX, and if I recall, no foot switch support.
    Maybe that's why the Silverline model was discontinued? I feel like Blackstar need to revamp their voicings. Even the ID Cores have the same issue that the Silverline series has/had. At this point, Boss loads their amps for much more replay value, and more importantly, the fun factor.
    Again, nice playing!

    I have to admit, I've actually never been a fan of the sound of Katanas, but this is one of the first videos that has caught my ear. There must be something to that new speaker. I always thought the sound I was hoping for with them could perhaps be a speaker change away. Who knew, eh??? Kinda makes me want to try one of the new Gen 3s out at my local shop.
    Sounds like you were channeling Michael Chapman a bit toward the beginning of your acoustic demo. 😉 I also enjoyed the music you played using your Columbus ES-guitar a great deal. Sounded like nothing I've heard you play before. Very jazzy at times with alternate progressions. Very nice. And toward the end, holy Van Halen, Batman! 😄Great playing throughout as always, Dave! Nice playing Dave!! So awesome to see how the music is comforting for you when you play it. For us Nero-Atypicals (Those of us with Autism, ADHD, etc) it can be very hard for us to feel normal and comfortable, and this can stress us out greatly. I was lucky, for my 50th birthday this last January, my family got me a Boss Katana-Air (KTN-AIR). It is all the guitar amp I could every want. Since I don't gig, I don't need an amp to get that loud. Use Dave Simpson's, The Studio Rats. and Juca Nery's suggestions for setting up the Katana, and I am good to go. If I need a louder amp, I can always plug the Boss Katana Air or my Boss Pocket GT into a larger amp and go from there. Small amps are the way to go these days if you ask me. I have learned so much on how to get the sound I want out of an amp since I got the Boss Katana-Air. Even though I basically had the same capabilities with my Boss Pocket GT and my Roland Micro Cube (Red color), the Boss Katana Air is set up more like a traditional amp with a 3 band eq vs just the tone knob on the Roland Micro Cube. What I really want to get is Thomas Blug's Bluguitar Amp 1 Mercury Edition, that amp looks amazing, small amps and pedal amps are the way to go. I might just get a Quilter Power amp to go along with my Boss Katana-Air and Boss Pocket GT. I am really glad I got the Boss FS-1-WL wireless/bluetooth footsiwitch, it works with both the Katana-Air and the Pocket GT, and I should be able to use it with my Amp-Sim on my Linux laptop with Carla, NAM and Guitarix. Need to take a week and figure it out, the creator of Guitarix is very active on the Linux Musicians Forum. The Boss FS-1-WL not only gives you three footswitches by itself, you can add an expression pedal to act as a wah or a volume pedal, and you can add an external 2 switch pedal also, so you have 5 footswitchs and a wah/volume pedal, which makes the Pocket GT and the Katana Air a way more usable item. John Nathan Cordy even gigged with the Boss Katana GO, which has similar capabilties and functions pretty much like the Katana Air or the Pocket GT.

    Nice one Dave, hope all is good in Simmo World? Top review as ever putting the new Katana through its paces giving us all an insight into what it can do. Some splendidly playing as always. All sounds excellent, takes the pedals fine straight into front of amp without using an FX loop which I don’t bother using either and happily live without.
    I think too many guitarist get too hung up on things like that convincing themselves and others you gotta play through an FX loop etc, or it’s the end of the world. Just plug your gear in and play and tweak your settings to your preference, it’s always possible to achieve decent tones if you work with your gear. You’ve just proved plug it I play and it sounds great with use of FX loop which no one in an audience would notice any difference or be bothered, most musicians wouldn’t either, only the guitarist playing would know and think they’ve gotta have it. It’s all in the mind it’s a must. Nice one anyway cheers Stevo

Since you did the unboxing video I’ve been looking into this amp and decided to sell the amp I have and buy one of these. I saw that it has a ‘.5’ W setting. Is that like an attenuator? I need to keep the noise down where I live and turning the sound down would be helpful. I never thought about using the Acoustic mode for pedals. That is interesting, I’m going to try that 😀👍🏻

    I do trust you Dave, for guitar equipment opinions, and for the great playing to showcase these!
    Perhaps the Katana naysayers have their opinions based on the series's ridiculously low prices?

  • @steverolfeca

    Crazy that you can get such a giggable small combo at this price point. I first turned to building tube amps on old chassis for the simple reason that I couldn't afford more than one or two of my favourites. Now you can buy a Katana, Catalyst, etc., for the price of an upscale speaker or a big power transformer.

    I’m not sure how accurate the sound is that I’m hearing through my smart phone and stereo headset. But I could tell that it sounded really great. I’ve never played a katana and now I’m really wanting to.

    Can’t see myself EVER parting with my mkii Artist, BUT……. I am awaiting your comparison. My mkii Artist has replaced all my other amplifiers within 2 years of owning it, with the exception of my Fender Twin Tone Master Blonde edition. Excellent video again Dave.

    Got one by trading a pedal for it. Best trade I ever made. Gave it to my daughter for her first amp (and a Standard later because I knew it would inspire her). You have broken the ice on these things as far as I'm concerned. NO I DON'T OWN ONE. Are you nuts? I heart tubes! But I would use one DEF as a backup. You're inspirational once again Sir. I may have to cage match the daughter for it. Good Day!

    That high pitched squeal you're talking about in the mark 1 speaker, I hear the same thing in the Celestion V-type. I'm of the opinion it's just an M Creamback with something done to make the cone do that squeal. Point is, if I'm right anyway, it's possible they put in the same speaker but with a slightly different surround material or paper in the cone or dustcap or some such. OLE!

    Would love to hear that acoustic on the stereo with the 2 Katana and if it is possible, to possibly have a wet and dry signal so you keep the clarity of the pure acoustic but also have the ambience of the effects available. Very nice man.
    Winning Dave!!! 👍🔥🎸🎼🙏

    Dear Dave Simpson from the CZcams,
    TERRIFYINGLY GREAT SOUND! The thing one mic does, right? 😉 I'm sorry if I made you sell a pedal... or a kidney, but I believe your amazing music deserved this 😉
    Can you tell what was the pedal you turned on at this 15:17 WOW-moment? Something shimmery. Cloudburst? What a beautiful moment! It might be better if I start making a list of these amazing moments 😲 The acoustic part was also amazing! At some point it had a sort of a phaser effect. WOW! Unexpectedly beautiful 👌 Great stuff! Btw a man of your good taste have already listened to Estas Tonne's Internal Flight album? 🤔
    Stay well, my man 🫂

    From what I’m seeing the 100 Non Artist head is the one to get. You get the flexibility of being able to play through a cab, but I just found out that head has a built in speaker so you can use it as a practice amp.

    I can't help but think back to when I was a teenager in the 80's and we cobbled our pocket money together to buy hard to play plywood horror copies of the 6 string classics through 2 or 3 fizzy DOD pedals and buzzy, weak Gorilla and Peavey amps that sounded, to be frank, horrendous. But it was we could afford and all that was available. Fast forward back to today and my 19 year old niece has a Squier Contemporary Telecaster that she plays into her Boss Katana 50, a rig that cost less than £500, and it honestly sounds incredible!
