Surya Bonaly is an inspiring French figure skater who challenged judges and the status quo of the sport through her impressive, but illegal jumps at the Winter Olympics. - Zábava
*CORRECTION:*
The backflip Surya performed in 1994 was performed during the exhibition showcase and that run was not scored.
1994 was the first time she ever performed the jump by landing on one foot to prove to the judges that it is possible.
4 years later in 1998 was the first time she performed it in a scored competition (shown briefly in the intro of this video) and I mistakenly conflated the story of that run with the footage from 1994.
Both times she performed this manoeuvre, it was a message to the judges that the jump can be performed on one foot, in line with the artistic flare expected of figure skaters!
I’d love to explore Surya’s story even more in a longer documentary style video, so if you want to see that, let me know. I’ll clarify the differences between the two runs better if I explore the story more deeply.
Yes! This was so interesting, I want to know more!
I hope that i will be able to do this at the time right now im on Normal skating and this is just amazing ❤
Please tell more of her story! It's a sin this isn't more widely known and recognized. She deserves respect.
Wow. Thanks a lot. Even this short video was mesmerizing! ❤
Please please please do it ❤😢
This is probably the best short I’ve ever come across…. When you said the backfilp is illegal because you can’t land on one foot I was like, “she gonna land on one foot isn’t she?” That was amazing!! And then she turned her back to the judges and bowed to the crowd. *chefs kiss*
Absolutely 🤌🏼
Truly inspiring
Definitely a inspiration
First time I wanted to see the full movie instead of only the short. 👌🏻 Good job!
This gave me goosebumps ❤
She did it on one foot, at that exact moment, it should have been legal.
and yet its still not
Well the trick does have a lot of dangers, I'm glad it's illegal. But seeing the backflip being performed is incredible
@@__toast___not glad its illegal. if u arent able to do it and execute it properly thats ur own fault but if u are able to, u should be allowed to incorporate into a routine. just because it could be dangerous doesnt mean it should be illegal. thats like saying ile vaulting should be illegal because its dangerous. poles can snap or impale u but its still something people do on a regular basis. same thing with rugby. no pads or helmets but u still get tackles and basically beat up. if a backflip is illegal because its “dangerous” then literally everything could fall under that same principle.
@@usmelllikeshitlollllI think you have to understand first how sports ban certain move sets. Generally, making a move illegal stems from its risk factor and how the moves are based on the same skills and techniques a sport is based upon.
Yes it is undeniably risky for a competetor to do the backflip and yes technically most moves in sports are dangerous but a you fail to understand that moves are banned in consideration for the consequences of the move failing not just simply because it is dangerous. The consequences of a failed spin in Figure Skating is incomparable if you fail to to the back flip. We're talking massively increased chances of spine and head injury.
Another point would be because it does not highlight Figure Skating skills(this is an easy google if you are curious what those skill sets are). And before you even let the idea inside your brain, NO, Figure skating is not gymnastics on ice. FS categories include jumping, steps, turns and spins. Arguably you can consider it in the jumping category however you cant technically define it as a toe jump and obviously not edge jumps so you cannot technically give it a GOE.
Conclusion? Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
@brooklynjackson2276 unfortunately laws and rules are made because of stupid people. Most people know not to eat the wrapper from a subway sandwiches but the stupid people forced them to put on their sandwich paper, "do not eat paper"
I’d watch a movie on her. That was incredible.
What’s it called?
They're just saying that they would if there was one.@@iLoveHealthyTakis
So would I
Same here.
Same here!!
They wanted her to be artistic, and what she did was pure ART
Well said and keenly observed.
Absolutely
It’s coz she’s not Becky 😂
Forget winning Gold. She won world and historical recognition, and the viewers hearts.
She’ll be remembered now more than if she won gold.
Very true...... There's two options here.... Win Gold? Or Be remembered for generations as the first person to do something thought to be impossible
Not a hard decision tbh
"No one's going to remember the Olympics 10 years from now, who won . . . but they'll remember your backflip! My, God, Surya, it was . . . Well, it's immortal! I am so proud of you!"
She did it like a queen!!! Break out of the box!!!!
No matter how many times I watch this video I’m still impressed. You can literally see the moment on the ice where she decides that she’s already lost the metal. What more does she have to lose. And it’s that switch that makes her decide if she’s going to lose the metal she’s going to win the history books.
Edit: holy crap this is more likes than I know how to process thank you
I always make sure to dislike the comment when the author edits it to comment on the likes.
Obviously you can't handle the likes :/

And love comments like this because they expose petty people like you happy 2024 dear
@@nightcoresenpai3911 Happy New year 2024!
Omg made me wanna cry. She made historical moment. Didn’t know her as a French person omg. So impressive
How you didn't know her? I knew her and I am from Finland...
@@avatara82bc not everyone has the same knowledge as you
Riiight I thought it was just me being a big Cancer cry baby lol
@@shylee9090I came to watch because she was fine and ended up almost crying smh
Im not huge into figure skating, BUT ive got a little bit of a gynastics background, and THAT yall is a back aerial on beam... a trick that is landed on one foot, then only *balanced* with the second foot landing, but if youre on skates, and your momentum can *glide* instead of making you fall? Shes a genius. She lut that tumbling background to good use because she is a GENIUS.
such a great comment and adds so much interesting and necessary context
there's an m missing in gymnastics and it says lut instead of put in the last sentence, just fyi cause I really like this comment but it would be a shame if people don't understand it or brush it off bc of this 😥
@@kathaaino one is going to misunderstand “gynastics” for any other word besides gymnastics. The “lut” is also contextual. I agree with the rest of your comment though. I love hearing those with experience !
In a documentary that aired on French tv about her. They mentioned that she did gymnastics when she was young, so no surprise she incorporated gymnastics into her figure skating routine
Surya was literally a former world tumbling champion who performed backflips for fun in warm ups. Not surprising to me
Absolutely LOVED watching Surya when I was little! She’s amazing ⛸️
I got chills, literal chills and quite emotional actually. This was beautiful to watch. Such a shame her talent was not appreciated.
As an ex figure skater, this is truly inspiring ❤ I didn’t fit the mould either, and I happy to see someone that skated to the beat of her own drum and make it that far in competition
i was wondering why you werent showing her backflip throughout the whole clip but when it finally played i understood why. i audibly gasped because of how impressive it was, she's amazing!
Truly inspiring❤ even though it resulted in a deduction
I just want to you to know that your effort in adding the link to this video from the short and adding an option to skip to where the short ended is noticed and appreciated! Shame on CZcams for not making this an already built in feature 👏🏾
I know right! Hopefully CZcams add it as a feature soon because I feel like it could be a lot smoother if the link could go straight to the point that a viewer got up to in the short.
Yes! Thanks!
True ❤
yeah I was pleasantly surprised.
Exactly. Was gonna say it was a really nice touch!
i love that she faced the crowd! so powerful
It’s amazing how she was able to accomplish landing on a backflip on one foot. Let alone on ice. When I saw her land it a smile spread wide across my face because I knew then and there how proud of herself she was even though she wouldn’t get the gold she knew she proved them wrong and that was enough for her
This ending gave me chills. I loved it! If you do a longer form video I’d love to see an interview of her today!
One of the best to ever hit the rink. A role model of mine >^~^> 💙
The way I was beaming at my phone, cheering and crying when she landed that. I’ve seen the video shortened before, but never in full like this. What a rush of emotions, I’m in awe, proud, so happy for her. What an absolute beautiful performance. She did that!!!!!!! Absolutely incredible. 🤞🏼🖤
I got chills when she did the backflip on one foot
Genuinely got overly emotional. I don’t even know why. To see such a beautiful, impressive feat made, not for scores or gain, but for the pure joy and wonder of performing it.
To defy what is set out for you and the mold that is given to you and truly accomplish something so amazing is breathtaking.
Such an inspiration and I love the bow to the audience rather than the judges, as they are the ones who truly understand her talent and are who really matter.
Her style was so beautiful to watch and so is she. She deserves her place in all the books! She’s phenomenal!❤
I remembered her and loved watching her!!
I got tearful just watching this video and Im not an overly emotional guy. Screw the judges, she is my gold medal winner!
She is so beautiful! Defiant and filled with fierce grace! I’ll never forget when I saw this. Her face, it just made me so proud for her and of her. ❤
Incredible. She’s evidently an amazing skater but I do understand why its illegal. If a back flip were to go wrong on hard ice it could result in permanent, life-changing disability. The issue isn’t it might happen in competition but that too many less skilled/ experienced skaters will break their necks training to do it.
Same e we other gymnastics. You can still break your neck on beams, high bars even on the floor doing an excercise. Your claim of danger doesn’t hold water. 😏
@@sharonthomas499 most gymnastics is done over at least a sprung floor if not a crash mat all of which are specifically designed to reduce risk of injury. Of course a gymnast can still break their neck falling badly, but do you deny that landing badly on rock hard ice doesn't carry greater risk, and is more likely to result in injury, than landing badly on a surface designed to absorb impact?
I agree. Not only that Bonaly has had incidents in warm up where she almost sliced a few skaters, Midori Ito, Josee Chouinard, Laetitia Hubert etc. And it’s on ice as well, she treats the takeoff like a lutz, meaning if she was to land on an inside edge, she might bang her head
Just make an exception and go give her a gold medal!!!😅🎉
I remember watching her skate, she really was a powerful, dynamic and strongly powerful skater.
I could cry, this was incredible to watch. How impressive she is.
I want to see the judges reaction
I have no idea why this video made me emotional but this was beautiful. 😅
This is such an amazing story. Did not hear about this before. Surya is badass.
The power and grace in her every move is incredible! And bowing to the crowd is such a beautiful act of defiance
Good content bro! Sharing this with my daughter now. Much respect ✊🏾
Truly beautiful! Unfortunately this slow world will only appreciate you long after ur gone😢🥺 but you’re a trailblazer and amazing! Thank you for sharing your strength with art!
Genuinely the best youtube short ive ever seen. Had the full clip linked, and a timestamp for where to continue. It baffles me that nobody else does this
This brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
This is one of the most amazing 🤩 things I’ve seen!
This got me pumped, a great short and I can’t wait to learn more about her!!!
CHILLS ALL OVER!!! STANDING OVATION TO THIS YOUNG WOMAN👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌💪💪💪💪💪😘🥰🥰🥰
I saw this live. I don’t even remember the trip. Her routine was outstanding. Brava. Listen to the crowds. They knew they just witnessed something spectacular.
Truly motivating..❤And that moment gave her a huge leap into her future ❤
Thanks for the timecode! This story is clearly amassing !
What an extraordinary young woman. Bravo! Well done. Turning her back on the judges- perfect.
I can remember watching this and when she did that back flip I took one of the biggest deep breaths, I think I have ever taken. It was shocking, amazing and unbelievable all at the same time.
They made a film about That crazy ice skater. What they should have been doing is making a film about this woman.
Surya is the only ice skater that has landed a back flip on one foot 😮
Insane!!! Goosebumps and tears of amazement and awe. What a frkin boss.
man this dude has an interesting way of getting you to watch the whole video and i’m here for it. amazing
Absolutely incredible!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
She’s a QUEEN that was amazing
youtube just told me how to keep watching the video…
OMG... My tears.. I can't hold it... It's like a movie...
I remember watching her backflip during the scored competition (the one in the thumbnail). It was a jaw dropping experience to witness, a once thought "impossible" move being made a reality by a powerhouse of a skater. I liked Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski (i rooted for the American skaters ofcourse) but Surya Bonaly is who I honestly will never forget. None of us will.
I remember this. It was amazing to watch.
I love to see people just doing what they love and not giving a shit about what other people think. She did something she wanted to and many people cheered for her even if she wont get any rewards.
Absolutely amazing!!! Never, ever allow other individuals to put you in a box when you were made to step OUTSIDE of the box! Respect! Know your capabilities and when they are beyond the norm, make that mark and be unapologetically YOU to your fullest!
This was a dope story. I never knew about this before. Definitely has me wanting to loom more into it
This video is so short yet impactful ❤🎉
Bro i cried watching this, so beautiful❤
That made me teary eyed. I hope she’s having a badass life now
She was Amazing we will never gonna see another Surya Bonaly again.
Watching her do the flip I got goosebumps so amazing
Wooo... Chills... Goosebumps. That was amazing ❤❤❤❤
This video style of shorts and full videos where it’s short and compact but the editing is still good really appeals to me. Sending your channel to my family :)
I loved watching her skate she was amazing ❤
I love how she does a move that has been banned and hardly attempted before perfectly and then bow to the crowd instead of the judges just wow 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
That was amazing!
Gave me chills, go girl!!
Absolutely amazing! ❤
Loved watching her and Scott Hamilton do a back flip.
I remember watching this live on NBC as a teenager and was in awe! My friend and I watching were squealing because we knew it was an F. You to the wind and fid what she wanted and knew that she could do it. I think Netflix has an episode on a sports show all about her. The Olympics did a last day, after the awards kind of show where she did the trick again in a pretty dress. I was cheering her on so much.
See, this is why I can’t stand these stuffy, pretentious judges. The last time a skater gave me goosebumps and captivated my attention- was Ekaterina (Gordeeva) and Sergei. (RIP Sergei)
That made me so oddly emotional, and I don't really follow ice skating stuff. But good for her for showing the world how incredible she truly is! Just because someone values stuff differently from you (the judges) doesn't mean it is any less valid of an option. And that doesn't mean she should be put down or penalized for it.
I have a friend who was a cheerleader and they performed at our pep rallies at school. I noticed that she was the only one who would pull her skirt down if it was going up too high. I complimented her on it afterward and she told me that they get points deducted if they adjust their uniforms which is just ridiculous to me. It didn't take away from the routine, it wouldn't injure anyone either. I get that there need to be rules in place but the rules should only be regarding procedures that would help people avoid being harmed.
Some just push boundaries and expectations and it is so refreshing to see!
So good it almost made me cry!
this is just pure genius. I got chills watching her... What an inspiration
This made me cry. Wow.
this literally made me cry SHES A STRONG AS WOMEN‼️‼️ ✨✨✨✨✨
I’ve honestly never thought a short would captivate me this mich
Best short I have seen
❤❤❤❤❤ 🎉🎉🎉 !! She landed that backflip so gracefully 😊😊 that was amazing ❤
Adding this to my adrenaline pump playlist. Watching this before heading into the gym makes you forget about the excuses.
Amazing channel.
I watched that live as a little girl and watching a woman do something she'd been told was impossible was a very powerful moment for me. I remember not understanding why she was being punished for doing something so amazing.
We witnessed unharnessed greatness in action and she's truly a legend. She landed that flip on one foot!
This vid ❤ I’m ALWAYS for the ones who choose to go against the grain, set themselves apart, and be unashamedly themselves❤❤
The GODDESSES Always perform with heart. She's Unstoppable!!!!!;; Beautiful!!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH THAT WAS SOOOO GOOODDDD!!!!! She deserves way more then a gold medal for that
That's fucking awesome! Figure skating is a sport I will never be able to get the hang of, and I'm so jealous of people that can skate so gracefully.
holy sh*t I haven't been that excited about a sports clip, ever. 😲 🤯 I even leaned forward in my chair!
that was amazing
What a fucking badass. And to turn her back to the judges and face the crowd is just chef's kiss.
Why did this make me cryyyy - that was so beautiful 😭😭😭
SOMEBODY. MAKE. A. MOVIE. ON. THIS. WOMAN. 👏
Truly amazing 😢
god i will never be as cool as her. She is so BADASS!! Proving the judges wrong, doing what she loves and prefers, and facing the crowd to salute, not the judges. I love her
Her performance was beautiful!!
It’s not a back flip. It’s a back aerial. Two completely different moves! So she didn’t do an illegal move.. love her and idek her❤❤
When she landed on one foot I had to hold myself back from screaming. Like omg she’s truly amazing for being able to do something like that ON ICE!
Gave me chills!
Beautiful!
