- An edited, illustrated and narrated playthrough of the game Dwarf Fortress
Sharpen your spears and oil your beards because today, my dwarves, we head into the northern swamps in search of monsters!
Watch as a small band of hunters delve the deepest tunnels in search of quarry! Will they prevail? Or will the nearby shrine's guardian put a swift end to their ambitions?

I'd like to imagine that the dwarf who discovered the Swamp of Brightness was originally going to name it "The Horrid Dismal Swamp," before he realized that wouldn't really draw in any immigrant dwarves or really bring him any fame. IDK but I think it'd be pretty interesting cannon.
you know, that tracks pretty well. Hoping these dwarves didn't have their hopes very high!
So he did a Greenland.
Dwarven Marketing
@@ohthreefiftyone First thing that remind me of, too. Prank'd! Haha
@@kruggsmashhow did you find the shrine while embarking?
Also, what was the size of the embark square for this fortress?
"When time was still yet young, and the Earth still growing, a mighty gaol once stood here. The booming wails echoed throughout the hell-beggoten mire. The winding spires of dolomite, creeping far out of sight behind dark clouds, as if to hide unholy communion with the grim skies; betraying their malign intent: that one day, they will fall. The putrid stench wafting from between the bars-- carried through the Marsh Titains' miasma-- unimaginable. Like twisting instars of vile stench; decay and dirt crept up the nose and pupated, blooming within the chyrsalis of the nasal cavity, spreading its cantankerous, undulating, wings of rot and ruin. The powerful creature shooks its bars-- for it knew, one day, it would be free".
I like to imagine this being written in one of the dwarves journals..maybe "Gutter's" journal. seems like he'd write something like that.
i really like the marsh titan's design, the weird decorations on it especially kind of implying it has let someone decorate it at some point, possibly hinting at its intelligence being more than that of just a beast
It'd be neat if forgotten beasts had varying intelligence levels, honestly
@@twiexcursoriThat would actually be kind of cool idea.
make the stupid ones obey the intelligent ones@@twiexcursori
I can imagine the titan just looking at them with interest. Ya know? Wondering around tall pillars all day gets boring. Now Krugg supplied him with the equivalent of an ant farm. Or a TV.
ha! you know, thats a good point. Probably not thinking these weird little creatures are much of a threat either, eh? well, we'll show 'im!
They're just watching with a bucket of giant grasshoppers
The titan may be setting up a farm of dwarves.
Or an endless buffet.
@@Maggot-Milk Well Krugg said he's keeping their numbers small so not very likely to have that
The shrinebuilders must have been a powerful culture. It must be a place of honor! I bet something super valuable is there!
... Why is my hair falling out?
I'm loving that you're staying in a single world for so long. you really get to dive deep and know the lore of the world. it feels more familiar, in a way. keep it up!
and thats how this type of genre should be played. and probably you can inherit the savegame to your kid if you want.
this genre should not be boring. and you should not give up so easily. and no need mods.
If you haven't seen it before, Steelclutches -- kruggs first ever series has 4 parts following the same civilization in the same world. The second part is interesting because it's entirely an adventure mode game. It's older so he hadn't quite hit his stride yet and the art doesn't start to show up at all for a few episodes and then isn't nearly as common as his later series. But it was what hooked me onto his channel. Plus, the very first episode has the most adorable intro song for a dwarf fortress lets play ever.
@@anarchoyeasty3908 It's fair to warn people that it's Profane Krugg at the time, which was a bit of a shock.
Enjoyable series once you get past the doomed initial fort, though!
@@asureaskie Haah I totally forgot about his early profanity. Now, I swear like a mother-****er so it didn't bother me. But yes, early krugg is not children friendly
I'm over 200 years and 12 forts into my world so far. I'm sticking with it!
The pillars of the shrine remind me of those concepts for warnings about nuclear waste that would hopefully last into the far future. Maybe whoever built the shrine meant it as a warning against the Marsh Titan.
"No great deed is done here. It is as dangerous for you as it was for us."
Dwarves: "I'm gonna pretend I didn't read that!"
The hunting fortresses always ends in one of the two ways...
Gloriously remembered and still proudly standing, or completely crushed under one particularly dangerous forgotten beast...
Both are always fun endings...
I cannot overstate how much I love how the lancers of Oiling commemorate everything in bead/armband form.
If the dog breeding works out you should show updates for each generation, to show their gradual evolution from cute whippet things to monster-hunting mastiffs the size of horses that can breathe fire. Dogs do that in DF, right?
I just wish to stress how well paced your recent videos have been! You've refined your editing style and art to such a degree it's amazing
Last time I was this early, Skullhorror still didnt have any walls.
..man, I really should get some walls up for these guys, eh?
Interesting choice to make the alligator look like a gharial!
This is amazing, when I generate a new world I never really understand the size and complexity of the lore it creates. I think that is the one of the best ways to play DF, to learn and live a world for a long time .Eager to see the next episode!
Love that you drew the dogs as sighthounds. Beautiful
woah, sevish watches kruggsmash? what a pleasently unexpected overlap of my niche interests!
I really dig having all of the fortresses in one world, makes me feel immersed and its really cool to check in on all of the past forts and see sorta the politics in the world. I think it'd be real cool to delve into each nation and just general world events for future stuff (This fortress being centered around the 7 dwarves). Keep up the good work!
Krugg, love the overviews during the introduction of each dwarf. Nice touch.
I love getting to know some dwarves intimately and following their personal stories, it was missing a bit in Northbridge because there were so many of them so I'm really glad for this small party
he's already got two pairs of dwarves, hopefully they're interested in making babies and gets perhaps a third couple aswell. two pairs are what can make a sustaining population as their children can continue the effort and cousins can marry aswell. the real killer is if a dwarf in a marriage is not interested in having babies - as that ties up their mate who otherwise would have been interested but now cant due to no extramarital pregnancy. asexuals and the gey variety are not really a problem unless you get many of them.
God that titan design is amazing! Love that.
Love the designs of the dwarves! Excited for a fortress with only 7 dwarves!
Back when the steam version was just released I had a fortress where I didn't get any migrants beside the first guaranteed wave and I felt so much more attached to my dwarves. That and it's also way less of a headache to satisfy them all.
Now every dwarf can get the focus he deserves!
Do note that you won't get any strange moods when you have a population lower than 20. You could get around this by allowing visitors to be part of your fortress, but that kinda feels against the spirit of the fort. Maybe it's possible to change the minimum pop in the init?
You can't change the minimum required population in d_init sadly enough. If you really want artifacts you could switch over to DFHack, which has an option to force a strange mood on a dwarf. Could be interesting to come up with your own requirements for a strange mood though, perhaps when a dwarf realizes their dream?
I really love your videos. You are such a good storyteller. The hand-drawn art and your narration really give this game another dimension of character. I discovered your channel back when Northbridge just was starting out and got hooked ever since. Thank you for introducing me to this game and thank you for your hard work to tell those stories.
Damn, hope copperdots and the other forts can make it through the seiges. I hope to see how they change the world along with your forts.
I'm really enjoying having these fortresses sharing the same world. Its something I really liked about the Honeystoker and Scorchfountain play throughs. Its fun to see a wider world, especially since you create such wonderful lore out of the snippets and prompts that the game give you.
Thanks for making these lovely videos
Ooooh!, Monsterkiller 2.0!
In a fashion! Its just such a fun premise.
@@kruggsmash I hope it goes well and you don't have to replace too many of the starting seven dwarves, we all know how fickle this game can be in fights!
More binge worthy content... yes please!
I hope you like it!
I love the poetry of a weaponsmith who hates violence. Is the drive to create just too great for her to overcome? Does she do it out of duty? Does she just think swords are cool?
I really like the stylized arrow for pointing at things.
I cannot wait to see more of this Fortress, I can already tell this is going to be a good one.
First time in a while I got to watch the episode on release day. This focus on the Lancer of Oiling has me wondering how the other dwarven civilizations are doing? Also, I always appreciate how you vary your style in each series.
I want to see art of Tiny wearing armor made with her targets' parts, Monster Hunter style!
Very timely man, just binged your stuff yesterday!
Heyy go figure! Hope you like this one just as much :)
Love this concept. I always like getting to know the dwarves a little better, and I think character-driven stuff can work really well if there are good motivations, like with The Watchful Eyes or Splatterface. The hunting motif is really cool too, I'm excited to see what you and the dwarves can do with this.
Spearcavern brings a real "This is not a place of honor" energy that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission does not appreciate.
A new Krugg vid, hell yeah
setting up to be a fun little series i'm hoping!....also hoping it doesn't end in two episodes..ha!
@@kruggsmash🤞
That forest titan is frikkin magnificent.
Your art is so amazingly charming and great. Such bold lines, i love it.
Having a Kruggsmash episode show up in the feed is always a treat.
I like small forts. Gives each dwarf the chance to truly shine, makes every small accomplishment a worthy one. And also really encourages creativity as you're in no rush to expand constantly whenever you get massive migrant waves. They tend to last longer for me, to the point they grow organically as children and born and grow up and forge their own niches.
Hadn't checked out a video in a couple years, but came back to see how you were doing after the Steam release.
The drawings are so different! It's such a unique style! I love it!
That ancient shrine/lair is so cool! I'm curious as to how you found it, or was it just a coincidence?
I would like to know too
You can enable the ability to see monster dens while embarking, i have used it to embark on a dragons den (and successfully captured it)
Tex sent me here. I honestly came hoping to find a guide but I got invested in the story telling.
"Musicians are magicians!"
Said the wizard.
Production value amazing as always. Always excited to see Kruggsmash pop up in my feed
Love it when Krugg uploads. Can't wait to see where this series goes!
I just randomly remembered about this channel after many years and holy shit has the quality gone up significantly. I’m so glad he’s still doing it.
25:57 "i'm a simple dwarf. love me stone, love me gems, love me picks, love me shields, love me brutal dismemberment, simple as"
Smashing that Krugg button. 👍
y'bearded bastard, you
Was waiting for this. I love your stuff. Love from Norway
Hell yeah. had a slow buildup, but hoping it was worth the wait!
Great episode, dude :D Soo excited for this fort! Anything to deal with hunting monsters has my attention XD Looking forward to seeing this small group take on giants! Here's hoping they can slay that titan and write their names in dwarven history!
For Wisp disliking warfare/martial skill in spite of being obsessed with weaponsmithing, maybe that could be explained by them liking/valuing weaponry an its quality so much that they dismiss the warriors making use of it. Sorta, "The spear is doing all the work" to put it in a way
Looks like the start of another legendary series! I can't believe you have steel already, what a promising start for some dwarven monster hunters. I not only look forward to this series, I'm also interested to see how (or if) Spearcavern and the events that take place in this series have an effect on the in-game world at large, in such that it may further affect whatever series comes after this one. I think Krugg has really been showing how his skills as an artist, player, and narrator cotinue to improve.
I dropped out of the channel a while ago, 4 minutes into the video I am stunned by the quality of everything: the drawings, the sound, the colors, the narration, the steam game lol.
So glad these videos are still being made
Gods, just the intro got a thumbs up from me. Can’t wait to witness this legend
I've been watching your videos for years now and I still can't get over how well you bring these dwarfs and creatures to life. You must have a kind eye for people. I'm already so invested!
I absolutely adore drawing you do for your dwarfs. Makes them full of personality and more memorable.
I love the way you've bounced between longer series and one-off forts in this world. It's been fantastic watching the story of the Lancer of Oiling evolve, and each band of dwarves find different ways of expressing wealth in their main goddess's honor. Thanks Krugg for being the best in the business!
those long spikes in the ground made me thing this was going to be a massive pitchblende deposit
I love all of your series. They really are a highlight of my week whenever a new episode comes out.
I may not see your uploads the day, week, or month they happen, but i absolutely love coming back to check your channel and seeing i have multiple hours of magical story telling to indulge myself with.
Thanks for what you do!
Came here on the recommendation of Day9 and I gotta say... I am HOOKED.
Always great to see your works. I love the story you get out of it.
I love the fact you built this fortress and started this story in the same world as Northbridge! maybe we will see some more recurring characters in the future? or maybe the legends of this new fortress will be a complete legend and a new story leaving its mark in the world as this hunting colony with a few fun characters who may eventually lead to an expansion as the Dwarven civilization grows north!
I love the way you pose everything you draw, even the insects have specific attitudes, it's awesome!
Year after year and séries after series and I never get tired of your stunning art my man. Fantastic stuff
so excited for this new series! love the idea of a smaller, more personal fortress. the designs and personalities of all these dwarves are excellent too!
I know these episodes take a massive amount of effort and I'd just like to thank you again
The steam release of DF is still gorgeous and full of little details. The Ascii Art holds a special place in my heart still, but I dont see myself going back.
Just in time as I was scrolling on what to watch before bed. I salute you!
Ha! hope you like it. Good night, man
@@kruggsmash just watched it and by the gods a small group of tribal beast hunters this will be an absolute banger! Cant wait for the next!
Man you never cease to amaze. That intro alone... So pumped for the series!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so so excited for this series and this cast of dwarves!
I get a feeling about Spearcavern, a good feeling.
Great to see that you made a new series. Looking forward to following it. Have a great day!
Your artwork is getting better and better. 👌🏻
Thank you for all the work to entertain us.
amazing episode, cant wait for the next one!
This was fantastic. Great work as always. I love the art for "Gutter" in particular.
These series you make are genuinely fantastic. Your production, storytelling, editing, and drawings make this amazing to watch. Plus these expeditions and events your dwarves go on ignites my imagination for ttrpg campaigns to make!
Now this is an exciting fortress! Loving the look and plan!
I really love all the colors in this one. Keep it up!
Holy crap Krug, just started watching this- IT’S SO GOOD!
That Marsh Titan Design is DnD, Dark Souls, and Lovecraft rolled into one. Seriously, one of the coolest monster designs I have ever seen, and it is thematically perfect!
Beautiful art this go around! You and Ms. Kruggsmash are a dream team!
Amazing work as always
I love your content. I just love it. I especially enjoy coming back to it after a break. I love the imagination and the SFX and story telling
Don't know if someone already mentioned, but
"YayDee enjoys pausing videos and reading descriptions.
"The description of the Giant Alligator was obscured by the Giant Alligator.
"YayDee felt frustrated not being able to read the Giant Alligator description.
"YayDee the viewer liked the video created by Kruggsmash the creator.

The drawings you make do make all the difference and bring character and life to the worlds you create.
I love this channel. Its so amazing getting to see your creativity, storytelling skills, and drawings (thank you mrs kruggsmash for the color). This channel is one of my favorites!
took a long break from Dwarf fortress but i'm back in it now. And i'm so glad to see you're still doing your thing, king. thank you for he masterful story telling.
Every episode has been better than the last lately, good work
Great stuff as always!
the art for this episode is incredible! keep up the great work
An excellent start to what i hope to be an excellent series!
What an interesting idea. Like a good old fashioned adventuring party. Can't wait to see how this one pans out.
That was really great, I love the way you draw terrain.
Thank you Krugg for all these wondeful stories. You are simply amazing.
hell yeah, new series! i'm excited by the prospect of a smaller population this time. my favourite forts are the ones where you can really scale things down and get to know the dwarves
I love when I come back to your channel and find a series I can binge watch.
In don't remember exactly, but a few years ago when I first round your channel I was in a dark place in life. Your videos helped keep my mind occupied. You have a gift my man and will be sad of you ever stop.
what a unique way to present lets plays and playthroughs.
I love this. Great episode, Krug
Loving the concept!
Kogan is the coolest. Already my favourite. Hes gonna be legendary and hes super useful.
Amazing work as always! Keep it up man, love your stuff :D
In particular I love the titan's design. You really captured that regal look while still keeping it imposing as all hell. Truly a worthy foe for the expedition to eventually slay!
I just want to say that I appreciate how much effort you put into your videos Kruggsmash. The incredible art you make and the way you roleplay the dwarves really does amaze me. You breathe so much life into this game. Dwarf Fortress is great, but I can confidently say we watch these videos because of you, not the game. You are a master storyteller, through and through. Keep giving us kickass content!
