The labrador has been America’s most popular breed for twenty six consecutive years. The breed is known for it’s playful and friendly nature. If you are considering a Labrador Retriever as your next pet, here are five things you should know.
    5. Labradors as a breed comes in three colors, most commonly black, yellow, and chocolate. Black is the most common color for the breed, yellow is more often used by police and security professionals, and chocolate is the rarest of color for the breed.
    4. Labradors were developed as retrievers who originally worked the Labrador sea. For this reason, any good owner, should ensure that their Labrador gets some water play. Weather it’s a local pond or a backyard pool water is an essential element for the breed.
    3. Labradors are a hunting breed, they are athletic and intelligent breed. Labs will need regular exercise that allow them to burn energy. They are retrievers so a half hour of fetch would be a rewarding routine for your Lab. Labradors are also high energy, they make good jogging and biking partners.
    2. Labs are relatively easy in regards to grooming. The breed does shed a lot, a good brushing twice a week so that your home is not covered in hair. The next two issue come as a result of the breed’s love of water. Labs who swim in the ocean or in a pool, will need a fresh water rinse, to remove salt water and chlorine respectively. Lastly, moisture in the ears can cause ear infections, so be sure to dry the labs thoroughly.
    1. Labradors are gentle and friendly dogs, this is in combination with their intelligence are likely the reason why they are the number one breed used for guide work. This gentle and friendly nature means that Labradors are not good guard dogs. But the breed is intelligent and highly trainable, so you easily teach your lab to be a sevicible watch dog.
There you have five things anyone considering owning a Labrador Retriever, should know.

My experience owning a blak lab:
    1) The only source of UNCONDITIONAL love I've found on Earth, even when you're having a bad day without any self-worth they will love you more than your heart can take. The saying "be the person your dog thinks you are" is illustrated best by the love of a black lab.
    2) They are not guard dogs, they are watch dogs. They will hear from a mile away and watch thieves come and take your things, then be sad they didn't throw the ball. Speaking of which...
    3) They are great at catching tennis balls! Mine wasn't that fond of it, but was reallt good at it. The laser light though, omg, she went stupid-crazy over that laser light!
    4) They have a goofy sense of humor! Hard to describe specifics, but they will make you laugh!
    5) Cuddle is their love language. Some dogs don't like to be "hugged", these do! They will do everything you want to make you happy as long as it's rewarded with cuddles. And belly rubs.
    6) When they pass, there's a part of you that you will never get back and you'll feel it for years. Despite this, I was so blessed to have been a "black lab dad".
RIP Nightfall 2000-2013, I'll see you again over rainbow bridge!

My labs knew lots of specific words.(Last lab Tazz, had about 40-50 toys in the spare room) Like a certain toy introduced when first brought home? Or his pick at pet store? and then add it to the other 50? in his(spare) room while I'm out of view from everthing down the hall even, could tell him to go get? His frog, tiger, purple monkey? Etc...and he honesty would prance with whatever you asked him to get, out to me. I could go on all night about all 4 of my labs. Seriously good for you. There ALWAYS your best friend, no matter what! @lired70 Před 7 lety +11

My male may he RIP, did have natural protective drive! If a service person came to fix something, he would like to gently bite at their pants! I had to put him on a leash in the house, I was asked several times to put him outside, however, he was my only source of protection. His sister, may she RIP, always guarded the door. My male was always laid back, good with children, however, if he didn't know you his first obligation was to protect me. He saved my life 3 times! Labs are amazing, loyal intuitive and adaptable dogs. My next will be a Lab rescue. I am still grieving. I guess I will know when the time is right.

For the most part I agree, but I've had 2 different big labs (110 or so) that had issues with strangers or if someone walked past our house in the front, only if they were on our grass. We had a big bay window in the front and I remember them both really pissed off, hair up their back nose and teeth pushed right up against window barking very load and indicating their not happy. Very protective of my mom as well. Jokingly if I was being a mouthy teen, playing with mom she would always ask if I was done in the kitchen? Which meant she would call duke and tell him to take me downstairs. He would latch on my arm and biting down just hard enough to hold me but not hurt me. Was hard enough with my free hand on my other arm going down the stairs? The things he did were unbelievable. Way too smart. Miss him along with others. RIP Duke, Spade, Jet, Tazz..

With the vast majority of attention being put on stronger, tougher, and/or more high-driven breeds such as catch dogs like the American Pit Bull and guard dogs like the German Shepherd, it is just as welcoming to hear softer (for lack of a better word) breeds. This is a dog breed channel after all.

    • @ZombieChimpanzee
      @ZombieChimpanzee Před 7 lety +2

I'd generally call them less intense, not more docile. Pitbulls in my experience(working as a shelter volunteer for a few years) have very intense personalities. if they're friendly, they're intensely friendly. if they're stoic, they're intensely stoic. if they aren't friendly, they're intensely unfriendly. Labs I've met don't have that intensity. they're energetic and dedicated, but they're laid-back about it. there's definitely an advantage to not having that intensity, especially when it comes to being a family pet. my grandfather and uncle have had labs and they're very good dogs precisely for that reason. they're not too extreme in any way.

Labradors have a tendency to get overheated.. hence stretching out on cool surfaces such as cement and tile, in the shade, as well as panting a lot. Water helps cool off especially on hot days.. Not a good guard dog but has the ability to alert by barking which can still be effective in a way (likely not a dangerous way). High energy can be expressed as pacing anxiously. Great drive for being active and doing things, ready to go when you are, pushy when restless, really thrives on regular exercise and routine. Very trainable and eager to please. Excellent appetite so keeping consistent portions is helpful to maintain a healthy shape.

I've had a few labs. very friendly with people. on the other hand ,very territorial with other dogs. that has been my experience anyway. still , I like the breed.

I know everyone thinks they have the best dog ever, but my lab never once chewed on anything in the house, rarely barks, sleeps still in her kennel, will retrieve everything loves the water and will chill all day or walk/run when you want, doesn't pull when walking and will walk by your side without a leash...yes best breed ever. Also isnt food hungry all the time, trust my chihuahua eats everything he sees...but the lab is very chill wheb it comes to her food...I have a German shephard dog love her too but the lab is just so lovable.

Mcastillo All of this is so true about my lab Spike, except he barks at almost every single thing he doesn't know lol. On the bright side that makes him a good watch dog.

There is an English lab which are the ones in this video and an American/Field lab that has been bred to be leaner with longer legs that have way more energy to retrieve ducks or whatever you want.

another good point would be the huge difference between the American lab and the English/European. American Labradors have high energy, slim and tall, and primarily used for hunting. English Labradors are calm, low energy, stocky and short, and primarily used for show. They both are great either way, I just prefer half and half.

My lab is extremely lazy , you’re lucky if you get 10 minutes of play😂. I would also like to add that my lab is only a few months old but has a very deep bark, so I’d say they’re very good at scaring away unwanted people. If you’re considering getting a lab I highly recommend because they have a very soft and loving nature and definitely LOVE water :))

Careful where you adopt your silver lab. Silver is supposed to be very rare. Breeders have recently been irresponsibly breeding for the color silver and ignoring health concerns to keep with the demand since its the current "fad". Yeah they look cool and unique, but the likelihood of it suffering from health complications is a lot higher than the other 3 colors.

My first dog was a chocolate lab, 80 lbs, we called her the brown rocket. She was fat and slow but loved water and was very friendly easy as hell to train. Useless as a guard dog. RIP. I have a Bull Terrier pup now. Hard to train, opposite experience.
