    I had a black lab that lived to be 15 years old but sadly had to be put down after he developed cancer. We did treatments and we always said if he was ever in pain we knew we had to let him go and one day he woke up crying in pain and couldn’t move at all. We took him to the vet they did all they could for him but we had to let him go. That was years ago but I still have his collar as a reminder of him and always will!

      I’ve had to do this three times and you never recover. You leave a bit of your life on that cold, cold exam table, where the vet injects venom into your lifeblood for how ever many years. It’s painful, regretting, alienating, and life-draining. If grief is the price we pay for love, you shouldn’t get a lab

    I have an English lab, he’s a bit older (12 years) I got him from the shelter on his 10th birthday. He was a breeding dog and his name is Nancy. He actually looks exactly like the yellow one in this video. He is the sweetest best dog I’ve ever encountered. Always by my side and guarding my bed. When I’m in the kitchen he just lays there, and whenever I go somewhere else outside he never runs off and is glued to me. These dogs are absolutely amazing. I wish everyone would have the pleasure to have one of these amazing dogs in their lives.

    My black lab is my best friend. He's 7.5 and Doc says he has a "mass" in his abdomen and might live another week or two. She said this a week before xmas. I rejected that like she was Satan himself saying it. Probably 20 people prayed in ernest for my dog and right now he's hassling my daughter for her leftovers. Took him off grains and give him a chinese herb twice a day and other than his distinguished grey beard, he's like a 2 year old again. He gets picked up by our cops occasionally and they know/love him and can't believe he's an "old guy". Happiest soul I've ever known. Omg I LOVE MY DOG.

    Princess the black lab lived to be 13. She was the happiest dog I've ever met and everyone who met her said the same of her. She would've ran through a hundred yards of fire to be with me and still be wagging her tail and want to lick my face! She was the runt of the pack, I could've picked any of the 9 pups, but she actually picked me. All the other puppies were following their dad around the yard but Princess kept coming over to me and followed me everywhere that day. We had to put her down she was in so much pain that she couldn't even stand in the end. This is my tribute to Princess - I'll never forget her. If there is a dog heaven then she made it for sure!

      You're absolutely right, it depends on the owner. Making some blanket statement like you can't have a lab if you don't have a yard is like any other blanket statement. I had a lab in a one BR apartment but we were within a stone's throw of a park system with trails and lakes. We did walks around the lake, biking, swimming, retrieving work, frisbee, play with other dogs and people, etc. Any good lab won't let you just sit around no matter where you live :)

    Our first family dog was a yellow lad. We named her Duchess of Dale. She was my best friend ever! We bred her three times and we kept one puppy from each litter. She was my best companion and hunting dog. She developed tumor on her leg that blew up and it smelled very bad. The Vet told us that her vitals were bad and we needed to put her down. I refused to let her go. My wife and I told the Vet that we would need to tell the kids and she gave us instruction on how to care for the wound. After telling the kids we waited a week before returning to the Vet’s to put her down. The technician came in and took her vitals then left. When the Vet came in as we said our last goodbyes she was smiling and told us duchess’s vitals had improved but she would have to loose her leg. Our tears turned into smiles and the Vet took her to surgery right away. Her hunting days were over. Duchess was scheduled to stay with the Vet for two days but she wouldn’t let no one near her. They called me and asked if I would come get her. When she saw me she got up running to me ignoring the pain. She lived another 5 years but lost a tremendous amount of weight but was still able to do the things she’s always done like help carry lite groceries into the house, go up and down the stairs and give hugs and kisses. In 2015 we brought the pack to the vets for their yearly checkup and doc told us it was time. It broke our hearts but we had to end her suffering. On September 15, 2015 the whole family said our goodbyes. We had her cremated and she sits on our mantle above our fireplace with a statue of a Labrador hold a retrieved duck in her mouth. As I’m writing this I have tears in my eyes and tears rolling down the side of my face. I miss her so much and everyday her remaining offspring remind me her especially the youngest,Ranger, who looks and acts just like her. Labrador’s are the best dog in the world by far!

    • @Amanda-md6rf
      @Amanda-md6rf Před 5 lety +20

      @@illustryfe5354 While that is true many of the conformation Labs who do show do in fact have a natural more barrel shaped body they still are overweight. I know many show line Labs who are extremely fit and while they still have the typical barrel chest and body they still have a noticeable tuck, muscle without excess weight and ribs can be slightly seen (not to much to be underweight but enough to show they're VERY active). It's extremely important to remember just because they have a certain body type it doesn't excuse the excess weight factor and it needs to stop being normalized not just in this breed but many others as well.

      mcnameva They have now what is called the English lab and the American field trial lab. Actually the Americans been around for a while. If you look it up you’ll see there is a difference the American is taller and leant. It’s really meant to work the field not so much water. They typically have more energy and a little more excitable and than the English lab. They do well in the water. I definitely like the look of the American lot better. Maybe that’s what I’m used to seeing.
      It is too bad they don’t mention the difference. I don’t know maybe they’re not actually an AKC.

    I just rescued a pure bred yellow lab. I’ve been learning a lot about the breed recently and I believe she is an American Lab because she’s a little learner and her nose is slightly longer so I doubt she would win any show. I can’t get over these “breed standards” and how crazy some people can be. These show dogs look overweight and unhealthy.

    My experience is anecdotal, and technically my dog Sidney is not a pure breed, but she is the sweetest most well natured dog I have ever had. The thing about labs, is that they love food, so you have to be careful about not "loving" them by over feeding them. Also, if Sid is any example, while active in youth, they love to sleep more and more as they get older. Which is fine. Just be prepared for that.

    I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed her dogs are all obese. Reading thru the comments I see that almost a third of them are about how fat they are. Not just hers, but nearly all the conformation dogs shown are overweight with low slung hips which leads to hip, elbow, and shoulder problems. I have a lab from the UK and she has always had a tendency to get a little chubby. She loves to eat and is a master at energy conservation. Now that she's 13, I really watch her diet so she doesn't turn into a blimp.
    I've also had 2 American field bred labs and they have the same appetite, but burn so many calories it's almost impossible for them to get fat. I have a 5 month old black lab pup right now that eats like a horse and doesn't have an ounce of fat on her anywhere. She is the most athletic lab I've had and explosive on retrieves. I call her my "flurry of fury" because literally everything she does in the field shows off her athletic ability. It's REALLY fun to watch. Indoors she is just the opposite, mild, sweet, and loves to cuddle.
    I like the look of British labs and their inherent calm demeanor, but I love watching a good American lab at work. It's absolutely stunning what they can do in the field. I'm about to turn 60 and it's everything I can do to keep up with a 5 month old lab puppy but it's been really good for me. If it weren't for her I'd probably be sitting around glued to the internet and getting fat. Instead I'm outside with my best friend enjoying a bunch of fresh air and exercise :)

    i have a lab- very sweet dog- also the dumbest dog I own. Seriously, he seems well behaved but I think it's just cuz he's so chill- he has been so hard to train and stubborn
    I also have an APBT, Doberman, & Poodle- no problem training any of them
    but the lab- that dog just wants cuddles and sleep
    Oh and the shedding- be prepared! If you get a lab your house will be covered in copious amounts of hair all year round- it never ends- hair everywhere. She mentioned the double coat, but that really doesn't encompass the amount of hair that you're going to encounter.
    But- very sweet and mellow dog. Just dumb ;)

    Almost two years ago we got our family dog who's a lab named "Doger". We named him after my grandpa "Roger" and we thought to use our last name "Doss" mixed with my grandpa's name. So we didn't name our dog after "Dog-er" to be lazy lol

    I love these dogs but it is sad to see how many health issues it can have because of the selective (pure) breeding (according to the kennel club standard). One only needs to look at the older pictures of the breed and you can see how strong and majestic they looked, by that I mean tall and more sporty. Thanks to dog shows and the kennel club these dogs are shorter, bigger (fatter) and have a smaller aka cute muzzle. But nonetheless I love them for their temperament and work ethic

    • @kameohosley2175
      @kameohosley2175 Před 6 lety

      Blackunchained Could also be that they look like the English version. There are two versions of the breed: English and American. American is better for work. English better for show. English are stockier and bigger. Americans are smaller, thinner, better at working, and have more energy.

    • @poeperdhe
      @poeperdhe Před 6 lety

      Kameo Hosley Well, as you can see breeders almost only sell the English kennel club standard lab..I didn’t know about the American type but I see that both still have the same issues

    • @abbyhouse1192
      @abbyhouse1192 Před 6 lety

      Blackunchained My lab is an American Lab instead of English and she’s 2 and a half years old fully grown at a good 55 pounds and is taller and has a sportier build to her than the english lab would and that’s why I prefer American labs over english they just typically in my opinion (don’t come for me people lol) work better at jobs like hunting, docking, and service dog work and overall struggle less with weight and health issues if you get them from a reputable breeder

    I am really disappointed in so many of the comments here! Thank God you provide this channel for people to learn about dog breeds! So many comments on her dogs being overweight- they’re English Labs and apparently you don’t understand this? Please people- watch the video with an open mind and don’t act like you know what you’re talking about if you’re ignorant on a breed! Labs have been America’s favorite breed forever and most I see around are from backyard breeders. What you think a Labrador Retriever should look like may not be a breed standard at all. Check yourself and don’t hide behind a screen and keyboard please!!!

    Grooming with Labrador I must say, they will make massive carpet in your home to the point that it's just no use to comb the hair. It doesn't matter if you just combed it or not it's just going to be a carpet everyday. So yeah grooming, not required, but daily house cleaning, just forget about it. Everything you have will have Labrador hair for the next 10 years.
    If you live in a hot climate place, I think washing the dog once or twice a month, or when you pet the lab your hand will be coated with a thick waxy grease. Oh if you have wooden floor, it's free wax on the spot it usually sleeps haha

    THESE LABS ARE NOT FAT. they are naturally stocky and there is a difference. They seem relatively healthy. The black one does seem a bit overweight but on most videos people keep saying they're fat when they are actually perfectly fine..

      Tiffany Zhu - Agreed & there's a big difference from what most people own here in the US which is a leaner, tad longer muzzle Labrador. I've had both & hands down the English lines are lazy & even more companion suited in my opinion. Lovely animals in general though. Mine love to do whatever it is that we do.
