Whenever I first start watching these videos I’m like “oh man this is a dream job! I wanna do this!” And then he gets to the individual dots he has to repaint and I’m like “oh my gosh I could never”
I get why you might think that, but truly, when you get to the stage of work where you are doing miniscule things like painting those dots, it's a state of zen/flow that is really, deeply restorative. I don't restore, but I do paint and draw, and the tiny stuff always looks so daunting, but when I finally do it, it's such a good and satisfying teacher of being patient and taking life slow.
That's the part that makes me think this is a dream job

Agreed! Or also like the horror stories of accidentally using the wrong solution/technique/materials and damaging the painting (like student-fails or something). I wonder if that's ever happened and what's the story behind that :P

It's crazy. A painter, long gone from this Earth. Yet SOMEONE, long after he he has left this plane, taking the time. Taking the effort, three hundred years later, to restore his beloved baby. We are ALL connected. Amazing.
These videos always make me emotional for that exact reason. Regardless of the time, humanity cannot help but to value art and consider it worth protecting, and I think that’s truly one of our most beautiful traits as a species- the joy and meaning we find and have sought over the years in the pursuit of art.

Every time you clean an artwork I am amazed at all the “gunk” is removed. I could watch you work for hours. I love the restoring and preservation process. Thank you very much.

such beautiful work. it's so relaxing to watch, and at the same time it's kind of a thrill to know you're seeing it as the artist intended, sometimes hundreds of years ago. watching the colors leap out from under that old varnish, seeing all the little details that had been obscured, and knowing this is closer to what the painting looked like when the original artist stepped back and said "yep, it's done" lol. it's all fascinating to me. thanks so much for posting these videos.

There's so much to love and also unpack about this channel. The work itself is painstakingly done, from the Belgian linen to filling in the small losses in the painting. This work seems to be a few dozen jobs and even more skills rolled into one title. (On a side note, I would love to hear a story about how you trained for this career and what skills you learned the easiest).
It's so easy to appreciate all of the hard work. You lay it out in front of us. You talk about it in a practical, pragmatic manner, but in a way that shows how much you care about your work and its quality. I'm not any sort of artist, but I deeply appreciate this work and this channel. Thank you

I'm in complete and total awe from watching this video. I have a background in the arts and have worked at art museums in NYC so I knew a little about art restoration. I knew it was a painstaking process that involved meticulous attention to detail, but I've never seen it done before. I would absolutely love to do this kind of work. It's so tactile and satisfying. Hell, I would do this work for free. You wouldn't have to pay me.

@@haeracolleen5000 A side of youtube dedicated to achieving the effect Blu Bot described, by using very high quality sound that feels like it's right in your darn ears (the sounds throughout this video are a great example). It can be kind of relaxing, but there are some real frickin weird videos made in the name of ASMR

ASMR is not limited to sounds.
I think one of the most wondrous things about your videos is that it’s taught me to see paintings differently. I thought many painting of this era were warm and dark because they only had candles and were indoors a lot. Seeing the original paintings shows how the moodiness is still there but somehow it’s so different. The artist chose those colours purposefully and now we see them!
Something about this is so soothing. I watched it while I was stressed and was able to calm down. It feels kinda like art in it's own way- just as precise and personal and skillful. I guess you end up taking all those beautiful museum paintings for granted.

One of the reasons I watch your videos is for your ASMR (or whatever it is), sonorous, grammatically correct narration.
As an artist. These are like watching hand surgery. Wince at ever move. Feeling the pain. So glad you Sir are a Master Surgeon.

I think the brown stuff being removed was an old coat of varnish that had darkened with age

The production values of the videos are awesome! Each tear of the fabric, tacks spilling on the table, the slice of the scissors, over the light background of traffic noises...all to create an ambiance of deliberate focus. Superb, even without narration.

There is nothing about this process that I don't find interesting and so satisfying to watch. I imagine getting back a painting you've restored to feel like getting an entirely new painting.

Maybe I'm growing as a person? :D I have seen some videos elsewhere that I had to mute because I really did not like the music but luckily for me, Mr. B (someone else called him that.. I like it..) chooses good music. This way was neat because you can hear the brush strokes and tool sounds.. it's very cool.

There isn't anything unethical. Professionals like this test everything before hand to make sure it will not hurt or damage the painting to try and make it look like it did when it was first painted
