  • The Great Falls Generating Station turned 100 years old this year. A Centennial Celebration is July 21-23 in Great Falls.
The first of the six generators at Great Falls began producing power on Jan. 3, 1923, and the second unit on April 4, 1923. The third unit at Great Falls went into service Nov. 29, 1926, to supply power to the newly built paper mill in Pine Falls, and the final units were added by Nov. 4, 1928.
One hundred years later it’s almost a forgotten fact that the spark for developing Great Falls wasn’t for lighting or heating, but for public transportation.

This is absolutely fascinating. I never knew Manitoba had such an old generating station. I am a lineman from Saskatchewan and I am counting down the days to celebrate Saskpower’s oldest transmission line turn 100 years old which transmits 115kv from islands falls hydroelectric station to flin flon, Mb. Energized in 1928 and still in use today. Incredible! Lots of respect for Manitoba hydro. The most successful electric company in Canada.
