I WORE 4 WATCHES AT THE BOSTON MARATHON... here's the data

Why do I wear 4 running watches?! For moments like this... I believe that in testing you can't go for one run and just say one watch is better or more accurate than another. I've been wearing 4 watches and testing them against each other for years now - I switch out the watches every so often so it hasn't been the exact same lineup as when I started but I thought it would be cool to show the breakdown of the watch comparisons during the Boston Marathon where so many variables are eliminated because it was the same exact race. Let me know what watch you rock and what watches you want me to try next!

The Garmin being 1 beat off of the HR strap for both average and max HR is insane for a wristwatch
They do really well at stable HR, but as soon as you do intervals with ups and downs, all bets are off lol
The watches seem to be pretty good at everything but elevation. The Running Channel has done some good tests and they've found the VO2 Max and HR functions to be very accurate. And honestly my own Garmin's race predictions aren't too far off my actual PR's.
I was shocked!
True
@@ChristianRunsNY mine actually does adapt well. (955) I think the sensor basically works as long as I have my strap on correctly.
The running power metric is not standardized, so any manufacturer can just use their scale. What matters is that when you plot the running power throughout the race, the graph trends align between manufacturers, even if the values are in different scales.
He could’ve used a Stryd footpod to measure the power. Still, pretty cool comparison between these😊
I always wondered what kind of data you were getting from each watch
Thanks so much for making this video to fill us in
Keep it up !!!
Congrats on the Boston performance! The data comparison is a great insight of what the little differences are between the four. That elevation gain on the Apple Ultra is insane 😂
great now i am certainly gonna get the coros pace 2 seeing as they added the update for breadcrumb maps... thanks for sharing your data
Thank you for sharing, I found this very interesting. Hope you continue this series of sharing your watch data after each major race. Look forward to up coming content on 100milers
Keep the great content 😊
Data is always intriguing to crunch! Thanks for sharing Hellah!
Thanks for watching Dan! What Watch are you rockin?
@@HellahGood old school Fenix 5x
Thanks a lot! I been wondering for a while how accurate the smart watches are, you gave us a very nice practical overview, Great job!
You’re the best, thank you for this and congrats on your race!
You have such a good energy man! Keep it up
The battery is the most tempting thing about the pace for me. I used to have to charge my old vivoactive 3 like every 3 days and need to be basically full charge before a marathon.
I have the forerunner 255 now it’s so much nicer not having to worry about making sure it’s charged enough all the time to make it through the next run.
I charged it on Thursday before I flew to Boston Friday. Didn’t even bring the charger, kept it on all weekend used it for a few group shakeouts, did the marathon, flew home Tuesday, still had like 25% left.
would you recommend buying the 255? Or what downsides have you noticed?
At first: good job @ Boston Marathon 💪💪💪 Thank you for your work and this interesting video ☺️👌
Very cool data! I did wonder why you were wearing all those watches! I wasn’t going to “watch( no pun intended) but I’m glad I did! Congrats on a very impressive run!
Hahaha thanks Ruben!
I did a marathon with a garmin vivoactive 4 and it added 1.5 km to my run. Not sure if I was maybe taking wide corners or what, but seems like a big difference
yessss this is a genius idea!! i'm obsessed with data just like you :)
Crazy brother, keep pushing!
Thank you!
Just found your channel, great stuff!
Great video. Congrats with the run.
Maybe check the precision of the Apple Watch Ultra without a strap to compare with the others. If the Garmin is that close to the band, it could be an interesting experiment.
Seems like the 3 top watches are very close in this test, so I guess it comes down to preference (in pulse and distances), but I don't know anything about the fitness numbers at the end of each table.
Thank you for this video Hellah! Amazing insight. No matter how man videos you drop though, the questions will continue to flow about "4 watches" 😂
Brilliantly insane idea. I love it!
This is very useful comparison
Love this! I'm real sus about my Garmin Forerunner 645 stats. It would be really cool to see you test that watch!
Kenya run is calling once again! Love the video
I’m pretty sure the HRM pro is what takes over for like vertical oscillation, ground contact time, and even cadence. And if it was connected to three watches that’s why it was all similar. But still garmin rules. The best hands down. Still not sure how I feel about coros for now
Amazing video brother hellah! I wear 2 watches myself - pace 2 and aws7 .
Thank you so much! 2 watch club!
I love my Coros Pace 2. It's lighter, with longer battery life, and has an intuitive UI/app than any Garmin watch I've seen. Battery life is amazing.
I did a 9h walk on Saturdayand tracked it on my Forerunner 955 on UltraTrac mode, today is Tuesday evening… without charging I still have 74% battery left 💪🏽 Insane battery life on the 955
Congrats bro
I tested coros apex 2 pro vs garmin fr 955 for two runs ( 17km and 31km). During the final 1/3 distance, HR from apex 2 pro significantly raise from around 155 bpm to 190bpm, while HR from fr 955 seems stable. Wondering if you had met the same issue before.
congratulations. my garmin did ground contact time and stride length per foot. I liked how long the battery lasted but i think the forerunner 935 i had was not correct on calorie burn.
Great channel!
Interesting comparison! Note that Garmin HRM also privides the extra data about ground contact time, stride length, etc. If your Garmin watch was connected to the HRM you could see this data on Garmin as well. Not sure why Coros which was connected to the HRM didn't have it though.
Because the Garmin HRM only transmit these running dynamics to (some) Garmin watches 😉
Coros hasn’t caught on yet, they do have the pod, though, that gives you that data. Just… expensive
Yes so it's a shame that he doubled up on Apples instead of garmin FRs. Plus I thought that the 955 had SOME dynamics? Hell my samsung watch has decently detailed running analytics (like Apple, I guess). Still, as a data nerd, I really ❤ this video. 🔥
@@TischTosh I think that the 955 will soon get wrist-based running dynamics (this feature has been introduced with the 965).
As a techie - great data!! As a runner - sorry about missing a Sub3! 😂
The Coros Pace 2 is suuuuuch a good fitness watch for $200. Simple function, advanced stats, and nobody can touch its battery life. I've been running in one for a few months and I'm sold.
Definitely!
For $200 the Pace 2 gives you a lot of bang for your buck, but I have to disagree about battery life. The Coros Pace 2 gives you 30 hours of normal GPS. The non-solar version of the Forerunner 955 will give you 40 hours of normal GPS. And if you go for the solar version it can be even more. (Assuming all other systems are of, like music streaming etc.)
I've got Coros Pace 2... I'm pretty happy with it, but I do get some GPS squiggles sometimes, running through the city.
You got the hrm pro. Connect it to your garmin and you'll get vertical oscillation, left/right balance, ground contact time, etc. Not just apple watch!
Coros definitely made it for the Leadville.
But I wouldn't even waste my time with the series 7 in a 100 mile race!
The pace2 is also really cheap, as these things go at least. So definitely a good pick. Cheap enough that you can get an HR strap for better accuracy (the wrist hr on that is not great) and still have change compared to most other watches.
Race courses are measured using perfect tangents. You are zig zagging slightly while running and will always run more than 26.2 in a marathon. As you see all the watches have very similar distances. You did mention this. Just adding more info.
Garmin and Coros calculate running power very differently. You can’t compare the numbers.
Also, Garmin also provides Vertical oscillation, ground contact time, and other advanced metrics.
Last thing, if you change Stave to “Race” it takes account for total time and actual pace. No adjustments
Let’s get it!!
I ran a fall marathon with 3 watches using multi band gps and my Stryd (non wind). Garmin 955 Solar on Multi Band GPS, Coros Pace 2+Stryd and The AW series LTE.
Stryd was the best with my Coros Pace 2 was the best.
I recently in Boston 2023, I ran with just 1 watch --Garmin 955+the new Stryd next Gen was nearly perfect. I also did extensive testing for weeks. Stryd next Gen is by far the most consistent and reliable.
nice video man!
How much battery did you have left on the Apple Watch Ultra when you finished the race?
Would have been a lot leftover - a 3 hour run for me uses around 12-15% of the battery on my Apple Watch Ultra.
@@AverageAFRunner with LTE enabled (but not used for music) I think I use around 20-25% for 30K running in 2,5 hours
How do you prevent the watches from sliding down your wrist and banging together, or maybe I'm just too skinny🤷🏽♂️
Nice smile, cool test! Coros Pace 2 is TOP!)
Sweet VID!!!!!!
This is a great experiiment!
I ran with the same Apple Watch Series 7 for Houston marathon and it died at mile 20 😢. I switched over to coros pace 2 and I’m so happy I did it. I don’t think any watch is competing with coros especially at the friendly $200 dollars for a watch that does so much!!! They also have training programs to help you with marathon training and automatically sync to the watch and the app is so easy to operate
Hey Hellah, nice video here! Just some suggestions. If you want more datas, why not try these several gadgets:
1. Garmin Running Dynamics Pod (wear it behind your waist)
2. Coros Pod 2 (wear it on your foot) or, some audible here, you can go for Stryd footpod
3. Oura Ring Gen 3
I believe these items would greatly help you with several datas they can provide to you & help you on your running. Have a good day!
I believe the heart rate monitor of Garmin also integrates the functions of their dynamic pod.
Gotta get that garmin enduro for the 100 mile race
how did you hit the button to start and end your workouts on all four watches lol
Do listen to music with your Apple ultra watch while you run marathons?
I ran a half marathon using my Apple series 8 with Strava, Apple workout, my accountability monitoring my run while listening to music and my watch dies as soon as I finished my race. I’m thinking about upgrading to the Apple Watch ultra for an upcoming marathon.
Is Coros Pace 2 still worth it to buy this year?
Great video, Hella!! Congratulations for nailing it at Boston. l'd like to see you test the Huawei GT Runner, it's very underrated and probably one if the best running watches in terms of quality and price.
Good stuff here, thanks!
Funny and weird the difference regarding elevation from the Watch Ultra. I dont have an explanation about it. Nonetheless, the Watch Ultra is my favorite as it is the best Swiss Knife kind of watch…
Very interesting comparison.
As @Shervin shared asked how do you manage for the watches not to slide now while running????
Yes i wonder what happened!! My AWU has been pretty accurate with elevation gain!
Have you ever tried a polar watch, thats what i use, not sure how it compares to the rest
how did you make sure the watches don't slide down your arm into the other watch? esp as you get sweaty? even if they're tight, they always slide down my arm from all the movement
You would not have that problem with your hairy arms.
@@chrisachristie but I DO HAVE THAT PROBLEM! Lololol
@@ShervinShares Get a refund bro 😂
COROS pace 2 lasted my 16:26 Ironman race with lots of battery to spare. I vote COROS all the way
What happens if you turn off cellular on the Apple Watch? I’d like to think that would extend the battery life.
Love this! Unfortunately two Apple watches but no Samsung or Pixel ect.
But respect nonthereless!
When I go a easy run that is my current 5k pb is 18:57 so my easy pace is around 5:20 to 5:40 so when I do the easy runs in these paces then my Garmin says the heart rate above aerobic zone,so is it good or Garmin say wrong?
Use a HR strap or, at least, an (optical) armband.
Or, just count your heartbeats for 15s and multiply by 4 😁
Geez I'm glad I bought the Coros Pace 2 and saved hundreds of dollars.
Race distance is measured 1 metre from the left curb. The painted line is the quickest route. Also, Certified marathon events have to add .5% distance as buffer.
Don't quote me on this
You know Garmin has ground contact time and vertical oscillation and a bunch of other stuff like TSS. Garmin has had that for at least 7 years or so
Amazing pace - imagine being slower and doing it in 3.30.00 or something - then the S7 would be even further behind on battery
Man I’m so close to getting the Pace 2. Been using my series 3 Apple Watch and just not sure if I can trust it anymore.
pace 2!
Switched to the Pace 2 last week (coming from Apple Watch SE) and should’ve done it much earlier, great watch.
for me the garmin data make sense. 0 anae because the run was too long for anaerobic improvement, where usually Z4 and specially Z5 are counting. And that much power? Garmin should update it to look more like others. Instead there is no one like exactly measurement.
Thanks ❤❤❤❤❤
nice video
The cellular service should probably be moved to the ultra since it’s has the better battery than series 7
What's the point of connecting all except one to the chest HRM? Would have been better to compare wrist heart rates too I would have thought. Also Garmin definitely has the vertical oscillation and stride length too 👍🏼
I know sorry out of habit I connect them all but had been keeping one disconnected for a comparison and didn’t actually plan to make this video otherwise I would’ve had only one connect to hrm! Next one I got u. Comparing like 10 watches in the next video
I’m pretty sure all of the smaller elevation gains were in meters, if you convert 833 meters to feet it’s 2,749 feet. Check the units.
I ran the Barcelona marathon this year with an Apple Watch Series 6 in 4h38min and it lasted the whole race
I have a series 6 did a half marathon in 1:47:62 and my battery actually had over 56%
Since the watches were connected to the Garmin Chest HRM and the running dynamics such as cadence, stride length, vertical ratio/oscillation, etc… came from it, I’d think that the winner would be Garmin; both with the HRM or without which was pretty accurate. I’d guess that the battery on your 955 solar is also superior to the other watches which makes it a top contender for data accuracy and dependability during long events.
The Garmin strap cannot send running dynamics to non-Garmin watches.
@@highseastrader4190 I wasn’t aware of that, thanks for pointing that out. In this case, why would he have the 3 watches connected to the strap if it’s not being fed the running dynamics?
@@Vcp05 he said under other comments that he was used to do that and didn't think about a possible comparison vs. optical HRM of the other watches.
Garmin very impressive considering it wasn't connected to heart monitor. Extremely generous on the running power 😅.
Garmin calculates running power totally different than Coros / Stryd. Can’t compare the numbers. Unlike power on the bike, running power is still very new and no standard has been established.
Running power is just an estimation (while cycling power is a mesure), so every brand uses its own scale. Comparing power data is pointless.
So any of these would be ok for a someone running a few days a week … I will get the cheapest 🤣 really enjoyed the video!
Exactly!
Really shows that data isn’t everything. That Ultra elevation is ridiculous!
numbers don’t lie, except for that altitude reading on one of the Apple Watches
😂😂😂 got me there!
Pretty sure cadence is also pulled from the HR strap if connected to the watch(s).
The strap will not give this data to a non-Garmin watch.
please test the galaxy watch 4 classic
DC Rainmaker has been doing this kind of stuff for at least 10 years.
I think it's safe to say that you did NOT in fact 'cut any corners' here
How much battery was left in Apple watch series 7 after the race ?
0%, I presume?
Thus, generally, the cheapest watch of all, Coros Pace 2, performed better than the others!
how do you press START at once?
I start them one at a time - I’ll have to show you guys how I start them in the next watch video haha
Numbers don’t lie...
Apple Ultra: 3000ft elevation gain 👀😂
I'm kinda blown away by your average HR. What is your maxmimum HR? My own experience and everything I've read say that if you run too hard (with % of maximum HR being THE indicator of how hard you're running) for too long, you'll hit the wall. It blows me away that anybody can hold an average HR of 167 for 3+ hours without bonking! Your results obviously speak for themselves -- I'm just curious about how that's possible.
My Apple Watch 6 can track 8+ hours (GPS and HR). Airplane mode (make sure to disable wifi and Bluetooth). Disable Display auto wake. Put on mute. HR is as accurate as tracked using a chest strap HRM as I've done side by side comparison.
I wish you had the heart rates from the watches too! But then you'd need another watch for sacrificial hr connection.
Coros wins big time. Kipchoge uses it.
I'm always curious about the run power compared to others. I'm often in the 400s, but I'm heavy, so to move my mass takes more power.
I imagine in your case the Garmin gave you a number farther off since the others use more running dynamics from the chest strap (vertical oscillation, stride length, ground contact time) as well to gather power data.
No.
1) because running power is not measured but ESTIMATED by the watches, and every brand has its own scale. It's pointless to compare them.
2)because only (some) Garmin watches can get data from Garmin HRM straps (except for the HR, obviously).
Not sure if it’s possible, but I’d love to have seen the battery drain for each watch.
Sorry Christopher! I wish I was thinking straight but right after the race I went back to nap and didn’t even think of checking batteries. Next experiment I will! I wasn’t actually planning this video before the race but I wish I was haha
@@HellahGood No worries at all. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos/content!
10:26 let's have a watch wearing competition :)
yes wanna see galaxy 4 watch.
Guys you can now live forever with Garmin watch. It gives you +1 BPM making you invincible 5:45
Why don’t you use the Ultra for texts and calls?
Apple gave me it as a tester and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to keep it so I’ve been using my series 7 to continue my streak and as my cellular watch. I’ll probably just buy one so I can switch everything over at this point
with that first time.., I was like …, “you did hit Sub 3…”, then you said it died.
Once apple ups the battery game, at all levels.., they are coming for everyone.
no gps watch is safe
It’s true. Apple Watch ultra is just phase 1!
Had a Apple Watch and Garmins. Marathon you pushing it with apple. Just get the Garmin. It lasts longer. 12 hour ultra marathon. Easy. 8 hour half iron man. No problem.
Interesting that the series 7 died. I have the Apple Watch SE and have taken it on multiple 3+ hour runs with cellular and have had 20%+ battery left.
Mine might just be overused at this point. I wonder if I can check the battery health
