1986 Ford F-250 - History of Ford's 1st Diesel F-Series Truck | AutoMoments

- When Ford and International Harvester got together, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. While the buying public fell in love with this truck's powertrain, it's a shame that some of its other virtues have been lost in the chaos of the 21st century. Sometimes a humble work truck is all you need.

Far from mint condition? Major cosmetic defects?
Bud its a bullnose F-Series with NO body rot. Its pretty close to mint condition
For Pennsylvania, if your looking for a nice older vehicle, look in Arizona
I have a 91 F350 and it is a work truck. Definitely no Cadillac until you put a couple thousand in the bed. Lol. Lots of spilled coffee from bouncing around.
Yeah. I live in the rust belt, come take a look at my 83 and tell me that this truck has major cosmetic flaws. Lol
HouseOfPaint I know you're driving a Ford or Chevy, Dodge! I've had them all,,,32. total ..to be precise,! will always love those American-made trucks, I also love my 77 Toyota, and No!, that lady is not for sale.!!!
Just a bit of patina!
I have a 1984 F-250 with the 6.9 diesel. Best truck I've ever owned, never going to buy a new truck! No electronics to worry about, everything is straight mechanical - easy to fix.
Tom Tucker Oh come on you know you love the DPF and DEF models.. 😉😊
Cool :)
No long trips?
Tom Tucker Not exactly. Its a diesel, which means fuel injected, which means a computer
wrong^
I totally agree, all the "truck" has been taken out of today's trucks. They used to represent hard work, now most of them are luxury vehicles.
+MikeGuy993 And they're expensive, too! Sometimes it's nice to have a simple vehicle. Thanks for watching!
+AutoMoments and the 6.9 being an excellent engine for work mine gets 16 mpg in town and 20 highway but besides just listen to the old 6.9 sing its sweet clatter song
+VK70001.P ilojuf
+MikeGuy993 I tend to agree. I'm not against comfort, particularly in a truck, but a pickup truck is first, and foremost, a utility vehicle, something to carry a lawn mower in the bed, or a riding tractor if one wanted to.
you also have to think thats why we have fleet trucks lol
I love the F series trucks from '85 to '97. They were the last Ford trucks that felt like trucks.
Ian i feel the same way.
Unless its 300 or a 7.3 turbo I'll pass.
My 2014 with a 5.0 feels pretty truck-like
J Bouchard your half ton is hardly a truck.
lol, what William Adams?? The 302 maybe isn't the best truck motor, but there is nothing wrong with a 351 or 460 v8. The hype over the 300 is based on reliability alone, but the 351 and 460 will almost always last just as long as a 300, while providing more power and torque. The 300 has it's disadvantages in being a low power engine that is only useful when paired with low gearing, making for a truck that is useful off road and around the farm or work place, but not on the road at all. A 351 half ton or 460 3/4 or 1 ton will outclass a 300 truck any day of the week. People seem to forget that ford had other gas v8 options other than the 302 for the older trucks...
This engine came out for the 1984 model year, Dad bought one in 1983. We used it to pull a 350 bushel grain trailer, stone picking, going to our hockey games. Super Cab with full length box. 95 mph top speed at 2300 rpm. A Beast of a truck.
Work has been taken out of trucks and country music has moved to the city.
Yeah, there's a lot of truth in that. Maybe we're just old fashioned, but 80s trucks and 80s country music are good enough for us. Haha. Thanks for watching!
bertxblitzkrieg I know man and Americans are getting fatter and fatter every year just like modern vehicles are getting uglier and uglier.
Just get an Ford xl or a ram tradesman lol. Plus all I hear in the city is annoying ass pop music
Country music has sucked since 1997-8, with VERY few exceptions (Night Life, Toes, and 5 O' Clock Somewhere).
@@roadwarrior114 Wheeler walker jr. Is the best modern country right now
My 1988 7.3 diesel is still going strong.
1000 pound combine tires, round bales, rocks, this thing hauls it all!
83 F-250, 6.9. Ran like a top. New needles/seats - $260. New injectors on a new powerstroke? $2500. No laptop required for anything under the hood. Last check, 400k miles.
Proud owner of an 86 f250 with a 460. Shit gas mileage, but with a service body she carries everything I need, squirrelly on the freeway unloaded but with weight honestly not that bad plus it was my dad's work rig. Used to play in it as a kid. It was my dad who instilled what a man is supposed to be in me and I see the truck as an extension of him. Strange how a simple truck can have so much sentimental value. Great video by the way
Trucks and manhood are forever intertwined in America. It's amazing the memories we make riding in old work trucks. Thanks for watching!
1986 f350 crew cab dually 460. 8.3mpg on the highway. I love my truck.
Same story bro, my grandad has a two tone dark blue and gray 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat regular cab long bed. He bought it somewhere around 1998 and it's only needed a transmission in 2009, passenger tailgate cord in Summer 2017 or 2018, and a tailgate handle in 2011. It has dirty fuel injectors, so it runs terrible when you put ethanol gas in it. I'm going to be using for my scrap metal business in literally less than a week, and I would never sell it.
89 f350 cclb 4x4. Was a 460 getting 9 mpg at best. I swapped in an LS 6.0. Milage doubled and so did power lol. Love my truck; had it since I was a boy. Shes about 6 different colors; every time a panel rusts I swap it for a rust free one; color doesn't matter. 12k warn winch in a big steel bumper up front; custom steel flat deck on the back (I built years ago). We started having kids and the wife was pressuring me to buy something more fuel efficient. So I made mine more fuel efficient. Lol. They'll probably bury me in this thing
heheh they are just as squirrely going down side roads and hitting washboards from the grain carts my flareside is known to kick sideways to the driver side all the time.. fun times great for looking at oncomming cars that have no idea why my trucks rear is suddenly scooting sideways.. our heritage edition is just as bad even with a fifth wheel on it holding its rear down
I have a ‘94 F250 with the turbocharged 7.3 IDI and 5 speed manual. Best truck I’ve ever owned. Gets good mileage, goes like hell, has no electronics, and fires right up in subzero temperatures. I will NEVER sell it. If the engine croaks, I’ll rebuild. If I can’t afford it, I’ll store it until I can.
me too, however I am at the rebuild part now =[. Clutch is gone engine is mixing the oil and water ( hoping it is just the oil cooler o-rings ) brakes are shot but even in its poor state it starts and runs just fine.
Ford should've offered factory turbo in 89 instead of 94 and advertised legitimate power output. The 7.3psd is a legend and rightfully so...but the IDIT is even more so in my opinion.
Climate controls you can use without taking your eyes off the road...what a brilliant idea! Makes you wonder why car companies don't think of it today.
New vehicles are terrible about that. You'd think with distracted driving being such a dangerous trend that car companies would try to help. Oh well... Thanks for watching!
So they can sell you another one when you wreck that one lol
In south Florida all you need is to put the fan on high and turn the air conditioning on. If it gets too cold just open the vent window a bit.
I hated buttons, and I hated touch buttons and touchscreen even more.
LONG LIVE KNOBS AND SLIDERS!
I agree. I drive rental cars a lot, leave the rental car lot at night, it’s raining or snowing, now I feel like I need a class on how to turn the heater and defroster on. I am always so happy to get back in my ‘95 F150 without a TV on the dash. And yes, it has two USB ports (cigarette lighter adapter) and even up to date navigation (google maps on iPhone) when that is needed....Love my truck 😃
Bring back vinyl seats and rubber floors. Love the work trucks.
+JR3059 Rubber floors are awesome, because it only takes a few seconds with an air compressor to clean out your truck! Thanks for watching!
Also known as the "hose it out" interior lol
JR3059 my 2015 chevy 3500 work truck has rubber floors i love it easy to clean
rubber floors are the best in a truck. sure carpet is nice but it's a pain in the ass to clean esp if you spill stuff on it. where if you spill stuff on a rubber floor you just spray it with some water, wipe it down and youre good to go.
JR3059 some king ranches offer that
meanwhile im in my 2001 7.3 powerstroke with a manual transmission, crank windows and a flatbed
Sounds like a great work truck! Haha. Thanks for watching!
I try my best to get manual transmission in any work pick-up of mine... and they all last 10 times longer than automatic trans truck's
I've got my 79 f100 with a 302 and a c6 3 speed automatic( short wheel base ) and I love it when it's running right
I ordered my '01 F350 Lariat from the factory in September, '00, still have it, and have zero intentions of ever selling it. No DEF or even a catalytic coverter to deal with. It has never let me down. The Tri-Power performance chip, along with 4" exhaust and Airraid intake really woke up the engine, giving it plenty of power for towing my boat and traval trailer, with up to 18 MPG on the road solo. The V10 gasser at the time got single digit MPG. At 150k miles, it runs smooth as silk. The only weak spot is the 4R100 auto tranny. I've talked to 6.0 Powerstroke owners who've kicked themselves for giving up their 7.3s with reliability down the tubes. I do my own maintenance: oil changes (full synthetic), fuel filter changes, coolant flush (ELC) and transmission flush (synthetic also). This truck will likely outlast me...lol.
Because it's not a ford motor.
I rather have that old "beater" Ford pickup over any of the new ones on the market, and that is saying a lot considering I am not a Ford guy. THIS is a truck, today's pickups are Cowboy Cadillacs, feel like I would break the damned things just looking at them funny. "But today's trucks are more comfortable and have more technology" you might say.... Technology and gadgets do not make a great truck, being easy to maintain and able to take abuse makes a great truck.
Carstuff111 amen, had an 06 f150 drove it for a few months, but a pothole and completely killed the radiator, then I had my tranny shift solenoid go, my master cylinder and then my power steering pump, went back to my 97, and I've just got a bad tranny, old trucks imo are better than getting anything new, spend a couple grand and a few weeks worth of work, and you'll have a truck to last a lifetime, go out and spend $40-$80k on a new one and you'll need a new one a few years later
It is pretty sad that my 1992 Honda Civic DX has 271,000 miles on it now, it had 236,000 miles on it when I bought it 3 years ago, the only things that were wrong with it? Needed a radiator and the AC didn't work. I replaced the radiator, brakes, did a tune up and oil change on it and it has served me well. Till recently, the head gasket let go (likely because someone had over heated it a bit when the radiator failed), I have the head pulled off right now, you look down the cylinder walls and you can still see the hone pattern! Pretty sad that an old Japanese car seems to have endured more abuse than most modern trucks can take. A good friend of mine worked for an AutoZone, he had a guy ask him if they sold rear ends for the then 2 year old Ford F-150 Raptor because he had destroyed his off-roading, and other guys asking for various parts for their Raptors because they had damaged things that were not covered under warranty and they were being too cheap to get their trucks fixed at Ford.
devour43 Is it a 4.6 or a 5.4.
An honest review about pickup culture. I really like older trucks. I even got a small little 1985 Nissan 720. old no luxury components just a plain old compact truck that can used for light work
We should do a video on old compact trucks! No days even "compact trucks" are oversized. Thanks for watching!
AutoMoments yep would make for some great content, keep it up
Thanks!
1985 was the last year you could buy a Nissan 720 with the diesel four, in that case the SD25 2.5L, though neither that nor the SD22 2.2L that was available until the mid-year 1983 changeover from Datsun was cataloged for the four-wheel-drive models.
Speaking of small trucks...my 78 GMC K-35 is helping me do a "resto-mod" on a 94 Ranger that was bartered to me for some work I did on a friends truck while he was out of work and broke. The lil guy is getting a 302 and a BUNCH of body work. My dually has adopted him as her lil brother and is always happy to run to NAPA or even better Summit Racing to pick up parts.
I love the look of these 80s Ford trucks, especially with the 2 tone paint
My 78 GMC K-35 watched this video with me in the shop. She wants to meet that Ford! They're kindred souls of a sort. They may not have the same parents but they're both working trucks with the battle scars to prove it! When my dually rolls through town (with her dual glassies rapping) on her way to the parts store or pulling "her" race car people do double takes and many times give us a wave or thumbs up. Kids always want pics taken with her and she always obliges. Even if they don't want to admit it people LOVE old trucks!
This body and the 94 facelift until 1997 was my favorite body style. Hell, I'd almost consider GIVING him my 2008 1/2 ton free and clear for this truck
I had a '86 F250 Diesel, just like the one in the video, but brown and white. I once used it to pull a 57,000 lb crane out of a sand driveway on a construction site (thumps chest). But, I spent ALL my time working on it, glow plugs, tranny, clutch, glow-plugs again. It was loud, uncomfortable and it smelled awful in the cab, but it was a beast. In 2000, i traded it in for an F150 with 26,000 miles on it that I have NEVER had to work on since then. Not a single mechanical problem in 170,000 miles, just maintenance.
I do miss the old brown beast though sometimes, but I don't miss the uncertainty. Keep your 2008, unless you're a competent hobby mechanic. .
No 87 and 92 to be accurate
My 4x4 2010 F150 6.5ft has hauled countless loads of firewood, cinder block, mulch, topsoil, tree branches, couches, refrigerators, ovens, kayaks, tires, and more. The hitch has pulled travel trailers, car trailers, & produce stands. I've even yanked out fence posts with my truck. I LOVE having a truck...
My dad has an 84 when I was a kid. Brings back memories
I miss the utilitarian aspect of the pickup truck of this generation. They may look attractive, and they provide a few creature comforts, but to me, a pickup truck is a utility vehicle, first and foremost. If you have a lawn mowing business and you need a vehicle to haul a lawn mower to a job site, then that's what a truck is for. I've never understood how that kind of purpose got lost in today's world of the SUV and the crossover vehicle, where everything about the vehicle has to be car-like.
It's not like pickup trucks were that uncomfortable to begin with. The only uncomfortable part of that F-250 was it's handling, not its interior. Haha. Thanks for watching!
I'm afraid I've never driven anything larger than my stepdad's 1978 Toyota pickup truck. I found it quite comfortable. I also found its handling to be acceptable for being a truck.
I love the sound of the diesel engine.
Jason Carpp Ford's F250 was still sold with vinyl seats, am/fm radio, manual locking hubs/locks/mirrors/windows and no cruise as recently as last year. The XL option is there, but dealerships seem to like to pretend it doesn't exist.
I like that in a truck. I remember the XL and XLT trim being offered on Ford F-series trucks even into the 90s.
92 f250 hd 4x4.The engine block has a crack that's jb welded and is still going strong.
Nice! The miracle cure. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Modern Adventurer, Haha that's funny!! I've got an 04 6.0 powerstroke that I JB Welded. Sum bitch is still running perfect and doesn't leak a drop of anti-freeze!!
Ole Dude my 6.0 hasn't moved in almost 2 years, it just got to expensive to drive with all the repairs
My 92 ford 250 custom xl with lift gate idles high i changed everything but the throttle body
Dude, brilliant... The most honest representation of the modern auto market I've ever heard outside of my own rants and raves.....
From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU......
Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
I would say 5% of drivers actually need a pickup. Most are just A-B vehicles. I laugh at people who can't afford to save money but drive full size pickups that get 18mpg and take 8 quarts of oil. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Oh, and a truck does not equal more manly. A little man in a lifted truck with nuts hanging off the back is still a little man..
It's funny, we've seen beater Toyota Tacomas do more work in a week than some GMC Sierras do in a lifetime. Here's to the work trucks! Haha.
Rick James haha true, I have a compact truck, full size truck and an SUV which each serves its own purpose, although I do use the small truck for work more often
Rick James Exactly man and old vehicles in general make you feel more manly than anything you see on the road today.
yupitellwhut There's also the Ford Ranchero and the Chevy elcamino that were the pickup trucks based off there muscle car counter parts.
+CJ Colvin yeah those are cool but they are collector cars now so i doubt many of them are actualy used as daily drivers
Cyan interior with fake wood in a work truck. Fancy. They don't do them like that anymore. In fact, they don't do anything like that anymore.
+TheLaXandro We kinda wish they still did, though...
+TheLaXandro It's not really that they don't build trucks "fancy" anymore, it's just that tastes have changed. Nowadays, though wood trim seems to be making a comeback, it's been replaced by cheesy plastic chrome and that god-awful fake carbon fiber trim.
What some people arent noticing is the 1980 and 1990 pickups are starting to be i higher demand. The low mileage models can still be found.
I love my 95 powerstroke. Run and load and tow the shit out of it and its still a baby at 320000 miles. Tuned and injected with a fat pipe creeping out of the side under the bed. Love it except i go through ball joints like underwear
You're right. But they have Invented a Bar-b-que Hot Dog with cheese! And Ketchup flavored Potato chips! The latter not being very good! Cheers!
Am I the only one that hates touchscreens?
Bad enough you cant get a phone with out one, why does every car need one?
We agree; 90% of the time, touch screens are a pain. Thanks for watching!
1978garfield Exactly man. I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 with 205,474 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since. I hate touch screens as well.
My daily driver is a 01 E350 van with 400,000+ on the 5.4L. It has spit one spark plug but I got that fixed and it is hanging in there. I would like to meet the guy at Ford who decided to go with aluminum heads on the modular engines and punch him in the mouth. I can't type what I want to do to whoever killed the 300 straight 6.
Totally agree. I find them useless and their way of complicating things that should be simple. A royal pain.
I'm with you dude, I hate cell phones I still got a slide phone I like my old iron 79 F250 4x4, 78 CJ7 258, 66 d200 no Bluetooth, no touch screen no seatbelts handcrank wipers in CJ.. and I can fix it all!
You nailed it. I'm the original owner of a 83 F150 SuperCab. It does everything!! BTW that rear seat is great for kids. There was an aftermarket kit that brought the seat up higher.
+srercrcr We're glad you agree. As for the back seat, you're right. Joe may act like a child, but he's a little bit bigger than one. Thanks for watching!
I love the old f series but I want to know did you faced any problems with a diesel because most reviewers saying old American diesel truck have a lot problems
Old american deisels are like the most reliable things on the road.
srercrcr key word was
Oh I love that truck and really love the sound of that diesel engine!!
My Grandma had a Diesel cutlass back in the 80s, never got to see it but it's interesting knowing that diesels were once a common place at one point.
Yeah, there was a period in the late 70s / early 80s where everyone believed diesel was the answer to our MPG problems. But then cheap gas and better fuel injection systems kinda killed that. Of course, diesel is still a favorite among big trucks, but that's more for power than economy. Thanks for watching!
GM tried to convert gas V-8's to diesel back then, but ended up with nothing but headaches for the try. Unlike today back then diesel was a lot cheaper then gas. For a real antique dog, look at a 50+ MPG slower then molasses in winter car - an 80's diesel VW (dasher or rabbit I think).
The infamous Olds 350 Diesel wasn't "converted from a gas engine," they shared the same CUI number with another Gas engine and people who didn't know the story thought "that makes sense" but it's not true. The real issues were they had no water separator (integral for Diesels,) they had weak head bolts and early engines had "green" engine blocks. Add in the stupidly low power for a Diesel engine and people who didn't know how to service them at dealerships and you had that mess. Some people who had the 5.7 cars stuck 6.2 Diesels in them which worked a lot better, I don't know why G.M. didn't just shelve the 5.7 altogether and put the 6.2 in its place.
I had one for a short time. They really were as horrible as people claim. Despite the advantages of small diesel engines in compacts, the Olds 350 turned Americans away from them for years.
Eventually VW, and some others, convinced Yanks to try them again with the "clean diesel" concept. Unfortunately, history has shown them not to be so clean.
LMFAO My Grandma had an Olds 88 Diesel. That car would clear a highway for a mile behind there was so much black smoke.
I have an 86, a 96 and an 02. My friend said my farm is also a home for wayward F250s. I also drove F250s in Iraq.
That back seat in those was actually awesome in the down configuration. My dad had an 88 dually extended cab and we left that back seat folded down and put one of those thick cushions that was a chair but when folded out became a bed. It was about 4 inches thick and made an awesome bed back there. We took a huge trip in 91 all over the US and I slept for hrs and hrs back there.
Huh. That's really interesting. Sounds like a fun trip! Thanks for watching!
I was told by a friend once that my ‘90 F150 was an “old man truck”.
I don’t think he meant it as a compliment, but I took it as one.
Ryan Kane i would take that as highest compliment too. classic trucks rule!
Thanks for the review, I have the same truck.
It made me a living and let me go back to college after a few years. They are amazingly simple, reliable and easy to maintain.
I gradually modernized mine over the years with taller gears, overdrive transmission, and turbocharger. It still can't catch the new 400Hp diesels but I don't need it to. Low cost of ownership more than makes up for it.
I never found the truck intimidating but it helps that I grew up driving old, long ford pickups for work. Even when I got a job after college and drove brand new fleet trucks, I never enjoyed them the way I do the old, reliable beast.
Its undergoing a frame-off resto right now and I hope to be finished sometime next year.
No plans to sell.
Sounds like an awesome truck! Thanks for watching!
I have a 1985 f250 with 460 and i go 75-80 mph all day everyday... turns, goes, and stops really great. But thats because ive actually taken care of my work truck i guess.
That brought back memories. First truck was a 86' F150 XL super cab, long box, 4x4. Other than mine having the front bench seat the interior of that truck was just like it.
Absolutely love this video so glad I found it again. This video was the deciding factor on me buying a 1985 F250 super cab 6.9 diesel. Essentially the same exact truck in this video but with a massive custom front bumper and custom beautiful flat bed. I absolutely love my truck. I love having a vehicle from an area where it was about work and getting things done and nothing else, no looking pretty or shiny just rough and tough. Truly an amazing vehicle.
throttle body injected diesel, oh god that statement is painful.
Sorry if the narration was confusing. What we meant was, You're probably EXPECTING a [gasoline] throttle-body engine, BUT it's actually a diesel. We might be dumb, but we're not that dumb. Hahaha.
surprised you got back to me hahaha at least you have a sense of humor
Oh yeah, we try to reply to most of our comments! Imagine if you went from driving a throttle-body inject gas truck to a this diesel on back in 1986. It'd be a huge difference!
man i wish i couldve had that experience, to drive it in 86 im used to all the 6.0s and 6.7s and 12vs now, and they all have BALLS. the 6.9 is pretty gutless compared to even modern day gassers these days haha
Except in 1986 every gas engine you could get in an F-250 had a carburetor, and none of them ever had TBI. The 300 got multiport EFI in 1987, the 351 and 460 in 1988.
I only buy old trucks for my company it is better to fix it your self then computers.
There's a lot of truth in that. Plus, carmakers are so protective with their software copyrights that they don't want you messing with computers anyways. All the more reason to keep these trucks running! Thanks for watching!
qcn_ cummins except for when you spend more time fixing them than using them to make money.
D4x4Bronc that's why I love my 97 f150 fix it damn near once a week, but parts are dirt cheap
I will take that over my 2005 F250 King Ranch, my grandfather bought an F150 XLT Lariat brand new in 1986, I loved that truck.
As much as I love old vehicles, I appreciate the safety of new vehicles.
I had an 08 f250. Bought it brand new. Used the piss out of it. Took good care of it too. Received 24000 for it on a trade in for my 2016 f350. Use this truck too. Pulling a trailer for more than half the mileage that gets put on. Modern trucks are designed to be comfortable like an everyday family vehicle. But tough enough for work.
How does this channel only have 12k subscribers?
I almost shed a tear at the end of the vid w/ the sad music and all. Always loved that body style, along with the 2 gens after that (through 1996) as well. Had several. Back when trucks were real trucks.
We're glad you liked the video! We love these trucks, too.
Just got the temporary registration (still need to do the weight certificate to complete) on my my grandparents 1986 F250 6.9 diesel and after market turbo which hasn't been on the road in about a decade when i moved out from New Mexici and for 8 years before that. I am so dang excited! Lived the video and the information you related. Thank you!
Way back when people bought pickups especially Ford pickups because they needed them for work now people buy pickups to look pretty in them and compliant about terrible mpg. Plus now they don't even have smoker windows to help get rid of the habit not a smoker but those windows actually gave a good amount of air in.
charger master smoker window?!!! Wtf are you talking about you mean a wing window aka old school air conditioning.
Sackmatters that's what my dad told me and i heard others growing up called them but the other day according to the internet there called vent windows which became largely obsolete in 1980s when air conditioning became more common.
They're also a great substitute for A/C, except when it's over 90 degrees and humid.
I have a 1999 ford 7.3L and a 2001 7.3L
1993 Dodge with a 5.9L Cummins and a 2001 Stroker
Nicely done video. My daily driver is a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.3 Turbo Diesel(4D55) 5speed. No options(not even a radio) other than having A/C and a rear sliding window. 25mpg city and an angry 86 horsepower.
This is cool man I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L Windsor V8 with 203,634 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since.
Back when automobiles were awesome! I doubt good ol' Henry Ford, the man who invented the assembly line, the Ford Motor Company, and the gravity fed carburetor (As in the Model T) would've liked what his company is like today.
Yeah, it's sad things keep changing, but if they didn't, Ford Motor Company probably wouldn't have survived. Guess that's how it goes... At least we can still make cool videos about these old vehicles. Hahaha.
The CZcams Phantom Official I know man and these Modern car lovers think that cars today are wayyy better than ever but fail to realize that my 96 F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 will outlast every single one of those modern cars you see on the road today and plus my truck looks better than anything you see on the road today as well.
He was also a nazí
4:46 "How many owners actually use them to do work anymore" Few. 5%. They now stuff them with 200 gadgets, and the owners only use 15 of them. And never actually use them to haul things or as work trucks.
You're so right! Trucks have become playthings for wealthy suburbanites.
I agree. I've never understood why the gadgets. I have to wonder how much of these gadgets are truly necessary.
Good question!
I know. It seems as though the pickup truck has lost its way in terms of purpose in the automotive world.
AutoMoments Exactly man.
This is a breath of fresh air. Not a bit of aerodynamics, and Twin I-Beam suspension. Those were the days...
What a beauty. This totally just turned my night around. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
as long as it has more than 4 cylinder and goes brrrrr grrrr brap brap brap its nice car
That's a good rule! Haha. But there's some good 4 cylinders out there nowadays... Thanks for watching!
im about to get a 95 to 97 model 7.3 f250 or f350 because im starting a business
We hope you do some serious work in it! That's what work truck are all about! :) Thanks for watching!
I bought an 85 3/4 ton xlt diesel just like this. It’s slow, but so heavy duty. I love driving it in my window cleaning business. I carry water. 1000 lbs and it drives perfect. Very tough trucks. Built to last.
I'm jealous. That's my dream car. Can't wait till I'm out of college and can afford one.
Buy a 1999-2003 7.3 with an inter cooler
No those trucks are ugly AF
i find myself going back to this video a lot. great stuff
Well done! My dad had a similar truck when I was growing up, got me in the nostalgia.
I'm the proud owner of a 1985 f150 4x4. It has a 300 inline 6 with a T-170FT transmission 3.55 gears with 31" tires. The thing is a blast to drive and shifts good. And gas mileage isn't too bad with overdrive.
due the suburban they are amazing
That would be an interesting story!
Really wish they'd make classic styled modern trucks. I want the safety and comfort of a modern truck but with the simplicity of an old truck's interior. No power windows, no touchscreens, no electric seats, in fact, bring back the bench seats. All I want is button/knob climate control options and a radio.
you and me both. personally I love the idea of taking an early to late 90's model and giving it a 1.0EB and a t56. sure the engine is only pushing 125hp with the factory tune, but that's still more than 2.3 4 bangers that they came with and probably more efficient too.
I dated a girl in the early 90's who's father had a '87 IDI F250 4wd (locking hubs) and a plow on the front. He had a snow clearing contract with Roosevelt Mall here in philly. I was more in love with her fathers toys than I was her. Lathes, English wheel, hydraulic presses, quads, dirt bikes etc etc. He was a man's man and I wanted all his toys! Sadly, we broke up and I'm still jealous of her fathers toys (35 years later).
My grandfather had a 1979 F-250 he bought new from Bondy's Ford in Dothan Alabama...almost the same truck...
That old F-250 was a total WORK-HORSE!!!
I watched my grandpa pull one of his John Deere 450 doziers stuck in a big spillway ditch when I was 14 yrs old...after he pulled that Dozier out he had a big smile on his face. He stepped out of that old F-250 & said..."that's why I only buy Fords".
True story!!!
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Ford offered a diesel ranger in '83
Yes they did! So technically the 1983 Ranger and the 1983 F-Series are tied as Fords "first" diesel trucks, but we think the F-Series maybe came a few months earlier. Thanks for watching!
phoenix love yeah that thing imo is a pos. Made such little power couldn’t be used for much other than driving in town. Couldn’t even go on the highway
6.9 run good but they are gutless
But they run and have plenty of torque. Not fast but useful. Thats the point.
Yeah you’re right mine will probably pull a house down but it is pretty godless but I love the truck
Yeah you’re right mine will probably pull a house down but it is pretty godless but I love the truck
Could put a Banks Turbo on it
I thought about it I hade a new hx35 laying around
My dad had one of those. Can't remember the trim level but it was top of the line. His was a crew cab dually model and did a great job pulling the travel trailer.
I daily drove a 1975 F100 for a few years, sold it and bought a 1987 F250 6.9 4spd which is my current daily. All my trucks over the years have been in cow pastures, mud, towed campers, trailers, boats, tractors, race cars, used as moving vehicles, hauled dirt and rocks and thousands of pounds of firewood, toted plenty of dead deer, and just plain worked. I am a mechanic at a Ford dealership, truck specialist. It's amazing how fancy the new trucks are and how many of our customers buy a $75k powerstroke crew cab 4x4 to drive back and forth to work, never working the truck a day in its life. I love old trucks.
+Paul Ricciardi That's awesome. And it proves you don't need a fancy new truck; old ones are great! Thanks for watching!
Ford is the best!!!
Trucks just aint trucks no more they are luxury vehicles
Own a 1986 f250 4x4 diesel super cab 6.9 idi. Best truck I've ever owned. I'm restoring mine from frame up. Will never need another truck in my lifetime.
I’m literally about to cry because people and kids nowadays don’t respect just the engineering and they just work and power behind that beautiful truck
What a great video. Melts the heart.
Got an 83 F250 6.9IDI. Same color scheme. Best truck ever! Not as powerful or as fancy as the new generations but it's reliable. Does exactly what I need it to do every-single-time without fail. Slow and steady. It's a grown folks truck.
I bought a 1989 XLT F250 IDI diesel my senior year in high school. I agree with what you alluded to, regarding trucks today being luxury vehicles. Diesel pickup trucks today are a fad; I was driving diesel vehicles before it became the "popular" thing to do. Those old engines were ten times what they're building now. We have a 6.4 powerstroke in our F550 service truck, and the engine puked at about 65K miles. Had to replace the engine. The engine has been trouble from the day we bought it. Didn't have to worry about that with the old ones. Like I've always said, they don't build them like they used to. Love your videos. Thanks for making this one. I'd love to see a video on the Mercedes 240D four-speed manual, or the 220D. Great cars. Just discovered your channel. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our older videos and share them with your friends!
Awesome video!
Cool video man, thanks
Great video !
My 86 4x4 is my Favorite Truck ive owned and i Still Have it... good video.. from 4 years ago..
Growing up, my family had a 1980 Olds 98 with a 5.7 diesel, two 1982 Suburbans with 6.2 diesels, a 1982 K5 Blazer with a 6.2 diesel, a 1986 K10 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel, and a 1991 K10 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel. Added all together, they produced 225 horsepower and ran 65% of the time... ;-)
Hahaha. I was wondering where this list was going. Thanks for watching!
I live in town right smack dab in the middle of Oregon, and I'd say that about 90% of people that own trucks around here don't need them.
But boy do I love these old F series trucks! I'm gonna be getting one for myself pretty soon!
A good friend had one of these. Loads of mechanical issues. Very hard starter in winter.
I have a old 83 2.2 Perkins Diesel ford ranger love that truck
Now that is cool and rare! Haha. Thanks for watching!
AA class # 1 super chingona truck!! Congrats to whoever owns it.
I’ve been driving a 2012 F250 with a 6.7 Powerstroke in it for work. It is a fleet truck in every way. Rubber floors, vinyl seats, AM/FM radio. No cruise control, no power options of any kind. I absolutely love it. To me, it’s everything a work truck is supposed to be. I’m not afraid to bounce down a muddy road or get into and out of it with oily, dirty clothes. It’s just perfect and I wish it were mine.
This guy is a great vlog host. His passion for the subject, lyrical genius and superbly timed and delivered inflection entitles him to be mentioned along with greats such as Jeremy Clarkson and my absolute favorite, rest his soul, Anthony Bourdain.
Phil Ronny thank you for the kind words! We’re so glad you liked the video.
I'm in love with that truck. Used to have a '90 F250 super cab 4x4 but the 460 was terrible on gas and I didn't need that much truck anymore so I sold it and bought a '93 Sonoma that has been a champ for almost 4 years now. I just did a 1,000 road trip last weekend in it.
It's a special truck for sure, but a Sonoma would definitely get better gas mileage. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Ford has always put out a very good diesel motor
I use my truck like a truck almost everyday. Nice video!
+azone123465 Thanks for watching!
Amen brother! Love the video, spot on!
I've got an old 67 F250 with no power steering, no power brakes, no a/c, with a 352 ( yes an old FE), 4 on the floor, and a 4.10 in the rear. I usually dont drove it faster than 55, but you dont need to, cause just cruising in it is a truly fulfilling experience that I enjoy. Plus working on it is very easy and cheap. Compared to todays trucks it is definitely modest.
I really enjoyed this featurette and I just subscribed. Keep up the good work.

Nice video
A chapter in History
This brought tears to my eyes because some trucks need to be worked because they were built for it not pavement princess 👸
i agree 100% to me the simplicity and rugged reliability of old trucks is what makes them trucks!!! fancy gadgets and gismos are fun until they stop working!!!!
Totally! Modern trucks are just fancy SUVs with beds. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for making the video! keep up the good work!!
You bet! More videos are on the way!
TC Smith Exactly man but these Modern car lovers just don't get it.
The newest truck I own is a 1989 Ford F-250, no special features, no heated seats, no little knob to back a trailer for me. Hell it ain't even got power windows and that's the way I like it. Just a good old work truck that I wouldn't dare trade for a new one
We like the way you think! Haha. Thanks for watching!
This is still one of my favorite vehicle reviews on youtube. Someone who actually gets it and appreciates this truck without the multiple levels of irony and reddit humor like RCR.
Thank you so much for being a fan! Glad you enjoy it.
My 2012 f250 gets a little workin here and there. I don’t tow with it much (yet) but I do use the bed quite often, and do some light off-roading with it. An easy but fun life for a truck like itself
i got a 1982 chevy c30 crew cab dually it originally came with the 6.2 Detroit diesel but got converted to a 454 and matched with a muncie 4speed, and i absolutely love it drive it almost everyday its one of my work trucks with the full ladder rack and inclosed box we built along with the tools it weighs 5tons but moves pretty freaking quick with the 454, i just love older vechicles much easier to work on then the new crap
I really like all the old trucks, I wish have one like this.
I know this is an old clip but as well as a common work truck these mark an era of time. I have 2 of these trucks 1 is a diesel . The other is a 4.9 both 4x4 configuration. Love these trucks and what they represent. They carry much more character then any new crap on the road now a day.
Great video man; funny and informational. Ive got a 1991 f250 with the 7.3 in it. Amazing truck i love it
+Joe Carey Thanks Joe! Be sure to share the video with your friends!
+AutoMoments put it up on my facebook the second i finished it!
Arguably the best diesel engine every offered in a Ford. Each series since has had more problems and a larger repair shop bill
What a lovely video more!!
