  • After a long time I finally pulled the trigger and got a 1984 Ford F-250 Diesel 6.9 International. I couldn't bring myself not to find some form of a project! We'll be doing a lot to this truck to clean it up after sitting for many years.

I was glad I'm not the only one who was about to question that lol. Maybe he meant glow plugs cause 330k miles it's probably an old worn out loose girl so compressions a bit down and needs the extra cranking to build the compression up. Dunno if its mechanical injected no that familiar with the 6.9 but get enough fuel in the cylinders. But he did say that lol

If that thing has dual tanks and a switching valve you should either start trying to locate a new one now to have around and defeat the thing and run stright off of one tank or another. It will fail and it will leave you. You can take it apart and manually flip it over one from tank to the other but its a pita where its mounted and its jsut made worse by all of the fuel that will be runnign all over you as you try to get it out on the side of the road.

Keep the 6.9L stock, no turbos! Use ONLY Motorcraft glow plugs. And get that weak automatic rebuilt with heavy-duty parts from like Centerforce, as they can't really handle the torque from those diesels. And yes, change out all the fluids. Those bulging tires are likely old, and ready to sidewall rupture. Check smalltown tire shops for some good 10-ply ties. 5 of them, so as to have a good spare. Renount the spare up in the bed with a spare mount system, sp as to padlock it. Invest in a vinyl tire cover to protect tge spare. The cab and rust spots, use some fiberglass bondo and then repaint.

I've had a 7.3 idi n/A for a while now. It's a 5 speed 4wd first motor hadn't ran in 15 years. 2nd that's in it now hadn't ran in 20😂. @thecraig909 if you ever have fuel issues, one main thing to do is get an electric fuel pump on it. The first motor in mine wouldn't run mechanically so I used a $60 edelbrock mini diesel fuel pump like an inline style. It was just ran with a toggle switch to the dash from the battery on my terminals. Covered the mechanical fuel pump hole with a fabricated 10 gauge steel plate and the oem fuel pump gasket. My pump is ziptied to the frame rail😂, puts out a lot more fuel than stock.

You didnt say anything about having those truck camper mounts on the front of the bed. Wonder if it would collapse if you put one on it with all the rust. Rare to see those on trucks now.

My old 93 Dakota was pretty much in the exact same shape as this truck. I have a 1999 Ford ranger now that's in a lot better shape.

Check out some of Mustie 1's videos. Ive seen him use mineral oil and melted toilet fing wax to preserve patina'd paint. works good!. Also, when painting mounted wheels,I just use vaseline smeared around the edge. after paint just wipe it off. Todd the retired trucker.

Look up a country musician named Tag Thomas (Known this guy since high school)
He’s got a 6.9 with bigger injectors studs &gaskets , and a 6.0 VGT where he just leaves the veins open usually

If that's just surface rust I'd clear coat it and keep the look. Its pretty cool looking just as is.
