Instances of trains running over cows have adversely affected rail operations increasing the possibility of train accidents including derailments. This also endangers the safety of passengers and may lead to disruption of train traffic and loss of rail property etc.
As per the provisions of the Railways Act 1989, owners of cattle are liable to be punished under Section 154 (Endangering the safety of persons travelling by railway by willful act or omission, punishable with imprisonment for 1 year or with fine or both) and under Section 147 (Trespass and refusal to desist from trespass, punishable with imprisonment for 6 months or a fine of Rs. 1000 or both). Recently, the high-profile Mumbai Central - Gandhinagar - Capital Vande Bharat Express train faced controversy over cattle run-over cases damaging the nose of the train.

@who_is_dis for real. I grew up in Chicago, and in 1991, the suburb of Downers Grove, IL Metra station had a train fan making videos. This is a pretty busy and famous BNSF line. On August 26, 1991, Mary Wojtyla and her lawyer or something were crossing the tracks without paying attention. The lawyer survived last second. She didn't. And she was rapidly throw toward the camera. It's still talked about today. We saw a freeze frame or something like that in school, but now, train safety videos can't be that "triggering", i.e. not as effective. The video is still widely available. I recommend everyone see it to learn about train safety. I'm sorry for the woman and her family, but the video has undoubtedly indirectly saved lives.

It's not about how slow it is.. during a collision an object's weight is interchangeable for its speed. A superheavy object going at 1 mph can rip you to pieces if hit the right place. This is what people don't understand.

In this case, it is not true; it will not push you out of the way. It will crush you. This is because the cow is so heavy it is unmovable. It is as though the cow is blocked against a wall versus a slow-moving train. Slowly but surely the train will crush it. The floor is not made of glass. A very much lighter human would slide away sure, but the weight of the cow grips it to the floor very tightly.
Let us consider if the cow is in space and the train rams into it at slow speed. Assuming no energy losses in deforming the cow it is now projected at twice the speed of the train since the relative speed of approach must equal to the relative speed of separation. If now the cow is soft and bouncy the force required to accelerate the cow to its speed is distributed over time and therefore the impact is lowered. If however the cow is hard and bony, the force will actually increase to preserve the impulse and will be enough to fracture and kill the cow.
I might be making mistakes in the above but it goes to show there are so many variables to consider in addition to terms that I have not explained.

done.. I have experienced NDE in 2018, I was 28, I was in a rush and realised I will not catch my train if I use the stairs on the platform. Since I was alone there I decided to cross the railroads, even though every cell in my body and my gut feeling were telling me not to do it. What happened in next few seconds will forever be embedded in my memory, my body, my mind. I started to run across and once I reached opposite end I realised that the wall / floor that I have to climb is bigger than I thought.. somehow I managed to lift myself up and in exactly that moment I heard the worst sound in my life, you know that sound of electric wires snapping ( I dont even know how to explain it) but the ICE train ( they go over 300 kmh) was just passing the by and driver was honking frantically… it still sends shivers down to my spine while I am writing about it…only seconds later I realised why he was doing it, while I was busy climbing that wall other ICE train was approaching, and my only guess is that driver from the first train (far side at that moment) was desperately tried to warn me to hurry up.. we are talking milliseconds here … when I was finally standing on the platform the second train near my side was passing with a speed of bullet and also He honked as well.. simultaneously with the first train… I dont know what saved me on that day, I sometimes contemplate it and I dont know how I made such a grave mistake… what was I thinking? I even thought that perhaps in some other timeline I never managed to climb up that wall / platform in time… and also due to all these dark thoughts and scenarios every now and then I look for this kind of videos on youtube.. currently I am in a very bad period of my life due to financial struggles, no relationship experiences, etc etc.. I just wanted to share this with someone.. and hopefully this will serve as a warning to never ever cross the railroads…😢

It's a visual effect you see. When you are zooming in on something from afar,
it's velocity will appear different than it actually is for example, the oncoming cars on a road don't seem as fast until they reach right near you. they call it the doppler effect, and is also what happens when an ambulance or police passes by. the sound sounds different before and after,
so that is what you saw there was the before: the illusion that it was going slow, because it was being viewed from a distance.

It's all about momentum! To give a simple example: An average sized train hitting you with 10 km/h is equivalent to an average sized motorbike hitting you with 1000 km/h. Imagine how brutal that would be!
I would think that at a slow speed like that, you weren't going to feel the full kinetic energy unless you're pressed up against something. I think the big difference is that the train is not going to slow down one bit from an impact with a person or a cow, even at a slow speed, whereas with a car, It's going to be slowed significantly by the impact. The train is just going to keep pushing you until you get out of the way though. Does that all make sense?

Ouch. Yeah, sometimes there's no point even trying to slow down. I had a dog do that to me while I was driving a trash truck. Obviously the truck can stop faster than a train, but the dog was moving a lot faster than any cow too. I got my foot on the brake in time, but it happened way too fast to avoid the dog; if I'd tried, I might have skidded out and rolled the truck, and I still would've hit the dog. So I just brought the truck to a normal stop as if I was coming to a stop sign. No point doing anything else. Control your pets, folks. They _will_ get themselves killed, and drivers _won't_ be at fault for it.

Now at double that speed 120kmph the train would travel that 1km in 30 seconds.
The train was moving clearly faster than 120kmph.
So, from the cow's persepective the train was at least 1km away just 25-30seconds ago.
She never saw it coming.
Animals can't figure out doppler shift by listening to the pitch of the siren either, like humans instinctively can.

I remember that a commenter told as many people that the train has to come to a complete stop for a good amount of time. I can't remember of its an hour or two, but trains with that much weight doesn't come to a complete stop, it still takes time after the breaks hit.

The problem is that people are allowing these animals like cows to wander anywhere they like in cities, railway tracks etc and accidents will always happen. They should be tied in their sheds in farm or take them for grazing in fields. Cows are different. If it was a cat or a dog they would have ran away.

Because the cows are considered sacred or something (idk you tell me), any abandoned or run away cows are allowed to roam around and procreate like cats and dogs. You don't see stray cows that often in other countries besides India
The reason it seemed so oblivious is because in india cow are considered sacred and you have to stop for them, so they dont associate loud things moving towards them as danger and assume it will stop like the cars have to.

Indian railways are very unsafe . And i just hate how they maintain such a poor railway the government should start improving indian railways with fences and other safety features like my country also known as the uk . Plus the trains are so rubbish and not repaired properly they are reliable but can't they just do something about the railway
Indian railway network is so large that it's very difficult to fence all tracks. Even your ancestors tried to fence it when they were here but they also thought that it would be very difficult.
