  • Crossing the border from Villa O'Higgins in Chile to El Chaltén, Argentina is an incredible but challenging experience.
The border crossing itself cannot be traversed by car, but you can cross by a combination of boat rides and in my case - biking!
It's not an easy crossing on a fully loaded touring bike - for the first time on my trip I envied the hikers!
From Villa O'Higgins you can cross Lago O'Higgins to Candelario Mansilla, and from there - it's a case of scrambling up hills, crossing streams and lugging your bike up and down narrow forest tracks. The actual border posts are wooden buildings along the track - just make sure you get your passport stamped at each one.
To get to El Chaltén, you can either take a boat across Lago del Desierto or you can trek around the lake. THIS TREK IS NOT RECOMMENDED BY BIKE! You can do what I did, which is put your bike on the boat, and hike round - and pick your bike up at the other side. It'll save you some money too.
It's worth it for the views alone - stunning views of Mount Fitz Roy, lakes, glaciers and other mountains.

What did you do about exit/entry stamps at that crossing?

I wish I'd filmed it! On either side of the crossing was a tiny hut with border guards, so you got your stamp at each end. We met some Frenchman guys trying to cross Argentinian border without having got a Chilean exit stamp and they had to go all the way back 😭

We did it in 3 days because we hiked round Lago Del Desierto and put our bikes and baggage on the ferry. You could easily do it in two though 😁

Did you go to Torres Del Paine, or you just went to El Chaltén and route 40? Thanks

Hey! We cycled a loop by to Torres Del Paine but ended up leaving the bikes in Puerto Natales as we were told there's no camping in the park. We didn't do route 40, we did route 9 😊
