Animals is my favorite "Floyd". As a bassist and guitarist, the sound and structure of the songs hits my ears like a band playing live. It is also the tour that I saw them on and I was let into the outdoor stadium early by a friend before the sound check. I sat on the football field about 100 ft in front of the stage, absolutely the only person in the stadium. Personal teenage memory requires this to always be my favorite. I lit a bic lighter after the soundcheck.... and Nick and Richard came out front for a quick hello! Scott in Texas
Wow!! This would be a dream come true for me! Only 20 years old, but I feel like Floyd from '77 can never be topped. You have a great story!
@@golfingcub02 If you love that period music, get yourself the album, ‘Encore’, by Tangerine Dream, from their 1977 US tour. You can thank me later. 😉
did you know that pigs is David Gilmour on base
No, mate. This channel is actual therapy.
Likewise, Animals is my favorite Floyd as well, and also my first Floyd show at age 16. We sat right next to the stage and there was 1 other person there. Every time D.G. soloed we'd move to the empty seats to our right and every time they showed the movies/videos we'd move to the empty seats to our left. We literally drove the one guy that was there nuts! I've seen a million shows since and this show still ranks top 3. Great memories.
The guitar playing and solo on Dogs is absolutely some of DG’s best playing.
Agreed.
Agreed. I describe this song as Neil Young from a more advanced parallel universe.
Gilmour’s work on Dogs, over the piece, is surely his best in any song. Can’t figure @ontariosound ‘s Neil reference (another of the greatest electric players).
@@Michael-mm3fm it get difficult because I’m sure we’ve all heard the Comfortably Numb solo so many times it’s become overly familiar. Like it was/is expected to be played at the concerts, one of the ‘greatest hits’ as it were; But Dogs is a different beast. Other personal faves solo wise are Time, Mother… but there’s just so much good stuff… the late section arpeggios in Echoes… brilliant!
This album is 100% improvement. It sounds amazing and bassy. Drums are amazing, guitar solo is fresher and clean. Its brilliant.
Love the new clarity and the drums not sounding cardboardy anymore.
As my favorite PF record, I agree that this is a nice addition/option to the PF discography. But if we are being honest, the original is that, the original. That is what everyone knows as the reference sound. The new one will be more sonically pleasing to some, but not the original intent. There’s room for both, but the original will always hold up. Great record either way!
I listened to the 5.1 mix last night- twice. The 5.1 mix is why I bought the bluray and it brings an new level of immersion that this listener thoroughly enjoyed. The 5.1 mix is my preferred ANIMALS listening experience - it is wondeful,, amazing, and a true epic album front to back.
What makes Animals my favourite Floyd album was how gritty the sound felt, it blended beautifuly with the uncompromising dark satirical lyrics and menacing audio style that made it stand out among their other crisp and clear master works.
To change the essance of that feeling is to change the album's impact on how it makes you feel.
I'm not so sure it needed changing at all as it just worked...and if it isn't broke, don't fix it.
Cheers for the video.
I enjoyed this !!! thank you from Cyprus
Ive never loved a remix and remaster this much. Its so well done.
I think it is the first time in my life when I like a remix better than the original! Absolutely great!
Thanks for the review.
I’ve got used to the comforting duvet of murkiness that the earlier releases of this (and Jethro Tull’s Aqualung) have. Things are popping out more on this remix and the soundstage has much more depth to it. There will be times when I’d want the old comforting duvet of mud, but this is rather nice for now.
Totally agree. Nice to have both pressings to play depending on mood.
I just received the vinyl in the mail today ... can't wait to hear it!
Gonna run out a grab the vinyl today! Thanks for the review.
This is how it should have sounded,I think it’s sounds brilliant. The 2011 cd was also very good as was the 2016 vinyl.
Great review, thank you.
Only recently found your channel but enjoying finding vids of the bands I love. Any chance of a Tom Waits top 10 albums? I'm a big fan.
Interesting. As of right now, I'm waiting for the Blu-ray Audio version to drop through the letterbox. I was very happy with the previous 2011 remaster on CD which, to me - going direct to that from the 1977 mix - felt like one of those art-restorations where a whole layer of muck and grime had been carefully removed, letting the original work shine.
It'll be nice to hear Wright's contributions being more emphasised and the Blu-ray Audio version says it includes the original 1977 album mix in 192/24 alongside this new back-to-the-desk 2018 mix, so hopefully it'll tick all my boxes. Nice to have the choice on a single disc.
Animals is my favorite Floyd album. I will stick with the original. Like you said. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Love your channel.
Thanks
@@classicalbum It's not a case of fixing it. Its just another interpretation.
@@classicalbumSo what was the deal with George Orwell’s widow? How come Floyd could make Animal Farm but Bowie was told he could not make an album based on 1984?
When those harmonised guitars kick off on Dogs, everything is beautiful again in the world.
Great review!
I'll give it a listen, but I too don't expect that this will be future go-to-version of the album....
I’ve been listening to this album for at least 25+ years, which makes me a bit of a newbie compared to the OGs that we’re living t see Floyd on tour when they were touring in 77’ for this album. I was expecting a bright can opener of a menace, because this is my favorite Floyd outside of Pipers, but I was pleasantly surprised with the end result when I received the album in the mail. This mix sounds right for the subject matter, more than ever. Techno capitalistic anger translates very well into the 2020’s and for that reason, it’s refreshing and welcomed to hear this gem. Now I can hear the drums and bass the way they sounded in the studio, instead of the gauze that was thrown over the master by the OG master.
Great review, thanks!
You sir, should be a print journalist in the editorial or opinion pages. Your powers of insight and observation are entertaining.
It's not a matter of better. It's a matter of taste. Just imagine if you grew up listening to the 2018 mix and then they released the '94 or original today. People would be totally pissed off because it would be lacking.
Sounds great, makes a beautiful album even better
Great review. I enjoy your wordsmithery. I listened to the new mix of dogs and I hate the fact the vocoder effect is removed from the barking in the ambient section
It's not been removed... it can't be removed as it's on the tape
@@suffolkaudiophile It can be removed if it was added during the mixing process.
@@suffolkaudiophile Listening again it is more subtle and no longer an issue for me. It is a marvellous new mix that gets better with every listen.
Noticed your subscriber numbers are moving swiftly northwards so many congrats.
Thanks
I had this on pre-order but I had to cancel it owing to a change in circumstances, gutted! Hopefully I’ll pick it up soon.
You’re insights are always welcome, Barry. I couldn’t agree more that the fact we didn’t get an Immersion style box set is a real shame. I can’t think of why exactly all the live material from this era hasn’t been officially released yet.
Spotify has it
As ever, your review is enlightening. For me, Animals was a bit of a tough listen at first in '77, but after all was only an elaboration of the theme of alienation in an indifferent world that first took hold on DSOTM. I listened to it repeatedly on headphones back then, and always thought it sounded pretty damned remarkable. Was I missing something? I don't think so. Still, I'm looking forward to hearing the new mix (I'm waiting for the deluxe box, but will receive the Analogue Productions SACD before the deluxe is released), but I'll likely think of it as I do the Giles Martin remixes of the Beatles: an alternative rather than a substitute or 'upgrade'. As an artistic statement of its time Animals is what it is and doesn't 'need' anything. But WTF, I don't want to sound like a purist because I don't really care that much what they've done to it. Frankly I'm more interested in hearing the 5.1 mix than the new stereo mix, but I'm keeping an open mind.
I'm with you i really wanted a bigger box set. But excited to hear this new mix. Cool review 👍
Yes, the size of the box is always better...the bigger the box the better. In fact I want 4 boxes, one for vinyl ,one for the blu ray, one for the 2016 vinyl reissue and one for the original release. lol
Sorry Joe, I just had to...all in good fun.
My point is, I'm happy with the last reissue on vinyl. That was supposed to be the definite version, as was the one before.
But the record companies play on our human nature, especially when it comes to our favorite bands and their music, to have the best possible version in our minds.
I'm not buying anything new, I bought Meddle, Dark Side, Animals, The Wall, and Wish You Were Here on new 2016 vinyl and I love them..plus I don't have anymore cash to throw at Pink Floyd Upgrades.
@@richardhermans4457 i understand. I guess i meant some live material would be nice nice or outakes, things of that nature. Still excited to hear it though
@@joerocks7381 oh of course, we can't get enough Pink Floyd.
I was just having fun with you about the bigger box thing.
Enjoy.
I’m looking forward to hearing it. My favourite PF album. A very dark new album cover art which is unique to this album, the other PF releases all retaining their original artwork.
Beautiful cover and nice booklet. Well done.
Got around to listening to the blu ray 5.1 and honestly it sounds magnificent to me.
Thanks for the review Barry, I think this remix is interesting and I don’t have any great issues with it outside of one thing, I like that Waters’ vocals were brought forward on “Pigs On The Wing” 1&2, they are also warmer, but I think taking the reverb away on them was a mistake, could have kept a bit of it and still brought the vocals forward. I agree that “Dogs” sounds a little less biting than the 94’ remix (pun intended), but things were brought out more in it too like the guitar solos. It also sounds warmer than the 94’ mix which might contribute to it feeling less biting. “Pigs (Three Different One’s)” sounds good and yes Richard Wright’s keyboards are brought up more forward in both that song and “Sheep” which I quite like. Overall though, I am nit sure much is gained from this remix and perhaps just a but is lost in the way of the bite to “Dogs” (there I go again).
I am very interested to hear this. I started listening to the stream on Spotify but I only heard slight differences. I need to hear it in a better version. I like the cover enough to buy the vinyl version. Love your videos, btw.
Either I am smoking bad crack or I am losing my hearing. I have streamed this new Animals against the old one several times, A/B testing the 2 and I hear almost no difference at all. The difference is striking on the Reason album, as the new one sounds almost spacey hollow and is not nearly as loud.
On the 8-track I owned "Pig's on the Wing" was a single song with an electric lead guitar solo in the middle.
Listening to it NOW. It's MUCH brighter than the original. Which i don't prefer. They really highlight the separation of instruments. It's like they're not playing TOGETHER.
Exactly. Instruments and vocals feel so detached from each other which for me totally changes the whole atmosphere of the original version and previous remixes
Overall I thought it was pretty good. I personally am a fan of the guitar work done on Dogs, also love the work done on Pigs (Three Different Ones). The dry vocals on POTW 1 was pretty jarring to me at first, but as someone mentioned in the comments too, I do like the upfront approach done with Rogers voice. By the time Sheep finished and moved into POTW 2, the voice felt less jarring, and I think it could grow on me.
I felt the same way listening to some of Steve Wilson's remix work - Relayer springs to mind in particular in that the new mix has so much separation that it becomes too chaotic whereas the original manages to blend the parts together resulting in better cohesion.
I've never bought a remastered version of anything. Animals was perfect, vinyl of course.
Then your vinyl must be terribly deteriorated.
My favourite Floyd album, in fact my favourite album full stop. Interested to hear this version
Hi, Very interesting review, I will have to wait to form my opinion as I've ordered the all whistles and bells edition which doesn't come out until next month. But I have to say ' Animals ' is always overshadowed by DSOTM and WYWH, but 'Animals ' is by far my favourite Pink Floyd Album. But as you mention we are not really getting anything new, even on the Super Deluxe you only get the new mix on, Vinyl, CD, then with the DVD and Blu Ray, you get the original 1977 stereo mix and a 5.1 mix. But we don't get any extra goodies as with the Immersion box sets. I personally would have loved a live show from the Animals tours, I was lucky enough to see Floyd live on every UK tour from 1974 to 1981, the original line up, and the AMLOR and TDB tours in 88 and 94, and for me personally the shows I saw at the Empire Pool and Bingley Hall back in 77 were the best I attended. But still we can't complain, I for one was starting to think this would never see the light of day.
I personally love this 2018 remix. Everything is augmented!
When I heard the teaser for this - Dogs - I had a similar reaction to it like I did with AMLOR 2019: cleaner and clearer sound, but a very different character compared to the original.
I know that both albums have had a complicated history with the band in terms of its sonics. However, I think those elements are what make that album what it is. In the case of Animals, that “murkiness” is very fitting given its subject matter, the manner it was made, and the concurrent punk scene. Yes, those elements are made more clear and it’s interesting to hear it in of itself. But when brought together … it’s kinda there but not quite.
Though you could say that by reintroducing Animals in this way now, it may be more reflective of the times now. After all, there is a seemingly chronic obsession over sonic clarity and cleanliness. The message is there, but perhaps needs to be channelled in a new way. It’s worth pointing that when the photograph was taken for the new album cover, it was done before that area would have been developed into a new residential area. Old demons still linger you could say =]
But to Pink Floyd’s eternal credit, this was never meant to be a replacement or a supersede of what came before. So the choice is there and you can take from either option what you want. After all, a dog still needs a home. =]
Animals was my "first" Floyd release. By that I mean it was the first Floyd vinyl that I bought with my own money within 2 months of it's release and thus has always been my favorite. And the time frame it came out in meant I spent almost all of my listening to the vinyl through head phones. Apartment living did not lend itself to playing music very loud. Thus it took my several months to come to grips with this recent remix. I must say the 5.1 mix played at reference levels is astonishing and will be my preferred listening experience. However my preferred 2.0 mix of the record remains the 1994 remix....mainly for headphone and in car listening. I am glad to have the choice and will take advantage of my access to modern technology to its fullest. Another great review. Regarding the subject matters look at late stage capitalism as a failure....it's not lost on this release with the change in artwork. A once great monolith of modern technology is being covered to make room for condominiums.
The new mix may not be for everyone, but this affirmed that this is my favorite album sonically. Enhancing the drums makes everyone feel so much more together. I’m not sure if that was intentional, however it’s a lovely touch! I do wish some instrumentals weren’t brought down, Roger’s vocals on both parts of “Pigs On the Wings” come across more frail, but they’re supposed to be more love-centric cap offs so it doesn’t bother me. Just, overall a mix I would have never expected to enhance my love for Animals lol.
Great Album that gets better and more relevant as Time marches on. We’ll just have to be content with the bootleggers who have completed a “box set” with the Oakland ‘77 and early mix/outtake tapes. As far as the remix goes IMHO 5.1 is what they are really meant for. Especially if liberties are being taken. Can’t wait to hear that plus the uncompressed high resolution original mix from the Blu-ray.
Animals is a dense sounding album, quite different from its predecessors, so a remix seems like a good idea, just as the A Momentary Lapse of Reason remix was for those who don't like the modern elements Gilmour and Ezrin put into the recording back in 1987.
My copy arrives this Wednesday so I won't be able to make a sound judgement, although I agree a lot with you, the perception of the songs might change, like it happened when the Dogs sample was released.
The Genesis remixes were a bit and a miss. A hit on the first 2 or 3 albums that suffered from poor production, a miss on the later albums because a lot was lost in the mix, specially on The Lamb Lies Down.
There was a demo quality on the vocals, so I sense the same in Dogs. It's cool to hear details resurfacing, but at what cost?
Not in a rush to pick this up. May wait until it hits the bargain bin with the" Nice Price" where I found my original copy.
Great video review
Glad you enjoyed it
Mine will be here today, can't wait. Best pink floyd album
This remix simply corrected the murkiness that made the original mix seem to drown in sludge. I always had to adjust my equalizers to make it sound vibrant on the high end equipment that I used to have.
In 1977 I had this on eight track and figured the LP would improve the dull resolution… not that much.
Oh well, the world is grand because we all appreciate different things. Hey, I got dragged to a John Denver concert in the seventies and once I dropped my pretentious a bit I enjoyed it after accepting it for what it was. Maybe this release will appeal to more people. It’s nice to have the choice.
I have the original wide spine first pressing vinyl from 1977 and to me when it’s cranked up it sounds amazing👍,
It would be interesting to compare with this new mix😉👍👍👍
« Pissing in the vichyssoise « well said!
Yes all the glitter is not gold but it gives us something that is worth a listening
I understand Pink Floyd produced Animals themselves in a building they had just converted into a studio--an unfamiliar room. I never thought the overall sound was as clear as it could have been. This cleaner version is much appreciated.
So I have given this a fair listen. On the whole I like it. Rogers bass is right up in the mix and is so much clearer which I like as he's playing at his most funky. He is well murky on the original.
You have to remember ‘Animals was produced at their them fairly new studio Britannia Row and I think the punk era also leant itself to the lower fi sounding production. It, much like Obscured by Clouds are albums I always felt needed a new mix/production…
For me, the choice is clear. I've laid out my old Animals CDs to sell at the used record store next week.
Keep one. Just in case.
@@aliensporebomb Well, I listened to the previous remaster, and it doesn't sound nearly as good as the high-resolution files I have. But I'm going to keep it because of the booklet. I have two older CDs that I'm going to get rid of.
Extra Animals material, including live and early versions is sure to arrive in a massive box set featuring all of the classic years...DSOTM to The Final Cut. I expect the parts of the box will then be issues separately in 2-4 disc sets.
I hope you're right about the extra and live material, but from what I've heard and read, don't count on it.
dunno about getting more" Final Cut". The band hated that record, except for Roger. I wouldn't pay for a new one, myself.
'Eclipsed' and 'overshadowed'. Witty!
It's all about the 5.1, for me. Get to listen later today...
One of my favorite Pink Floyd albums. What little I have heard it seems like it is missing something.
Word to less wise, for some of the material that might have gone on to this set but arguments put a stop to that, put 'the extraction tapes Pink Floyd' into Google to discover the demo version of the material herein. It seems that the material for 'WYWH' and 'Animals' was initially written at the same time, but it took the band a lot of internal disagreement to resolve how to treat all the demo material.....
I'll give it a listen out of curiosity but, judging by everything I've read and heard about it, will stick with the copy I bought when it was first released. My favourite Floyd album.
‘overshadowed by The Wall’ … lol good one!
My favourite Pink Floyd album. Love it
It’s right up there with my favourite album ever.
What's your favorite album ever?
Animals and physical graffiti always reminded me of each other as they both sounded a bit under water. While you'll never get a zeppelin remix from mr page, the last remaster brought it out of murkwood, like this remix has done for animals.
I absolutely love this remix version, (I also love the original) but for me this is really the equivalent of a 4K remastered movie blue ray, more detail, more clarity, and therefore for me, more depth. I personally think this should happen to all the Floyd albums and many other classic albums from the past, remastered albums never sound any different to me, maybe a slight bit more clarity but nothing more, where as a REMIX is far better, technology has moved on from the 70s and we now have the ability to bring out more details. The originals will always be available as they should be and thats great, its also wonderful to have a remix as an option (you don't HAVE to buy it or listen to it). Love PF, Love this album and absolutely LOVE this remix.
I love Animals and the more I listen to it the more it creeps up my list as my favorite Pink Floyd album. I think the 2018 remix version is excellent , the bass and drums are more prominent with the vocals being clearer.
Theres some thing strange about this album. Cant seem to...hear it right. Everytime i put it on its like i blank out. But i love the overall subject/ sound. But it still has weird effect. My fave thing about latter Pink is they never over do it.
Is the "original mix" from this release different from the 2011 release?
Quick question Barry: Why stress on the 94 remaster instead of 2011 remaster? (this is something I really wonder regardless of the new remix collection)
Yes you're right, I probably meant the 2011
Why no Snowy White version of Pigs on the Wing from the 8-track tape?
oh that's Taste Like Music/Listography's old intro music!!
Animals have been my absolute favorite Floyd album since I discovered it in the early 80s. ( I was pretty young then).
I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but I can't help loving this new remix. I find it awesome. Perfect? Nah, there are small things I disagree with here and there, but overall, this was an absolute fantastic listening experience. Just my two cent 🙂
Haven't heard the stereo remix yet, because I've been too immersed in the 5.1 mix. They nailed it almost perfectly IMO.
Pigs (three different ones) comes accross much better - love the bottom end - the whole thing seems more 'present' in tone and time - I think it's a HUGE improvement on elements that always sounded a bit weak.
I only ever had a dreadful sounding 80s repress on vinyl of Animals.
I've always Liked this album, particularly Sheep and was delighted to get this new remix, which I think sounds pretty decent and certainly aces the terrible vinyl I had previously.
If I find a minty OG on vinyl, I would be tempted, but not keen on paying £40-50 for the privilege.
Excellent review by the way, very detailed and articulate.
My personal favorite, the original mix. I'll give it a try, though.
Roger is blessed to
Have these mates . Gilmour needs their brilliance to uplift his gift . Gilmour and Wright are the paint on the trim is essential . The new mix is heavy and ok
I love it. It sounds far more intimate and the separation of the instruments is very defined, far less murk. Wright definitely gets more of the aural space.
I like the new mix. A fresh perspective on an album I’ve heard thousands of times. The disappointment for me is the exclusion of the whole Pigs On The Wing with the Snowy White guitar solo. Missed opportunity. 🙂
Yeah good grief. I guess you just have to buy the Snowy best of to get the only official release outside of a 45 year old 8-track tape. Crazy.
Still waiting for my blu ray …
ANIMALS has been my favorite Floyd album for now. It hasn't been overplayed to death like MOON or WISH or WALL. That alone makes it great.
@Flyfromthejar agreed about Meddle 100%. Again, the fact that these songs aren't overplayed had really added to its longevity. I immediately took to this record moreso than MOON, WISH or WALL.
So he turned everything up ?
The drums are so much better!! Loud and so crisp!!! Absolutely love this remix
Wow, can you do the next review whilst skinning a deer?
After the grouse shoot
just played, being my fav floyd album, superb sound compared to the original much clearer
Roger's version of the 23rd Psalm is much clearer on this version of Sheep. I quite like it, it seems to pulsate more than the original and is brighter as if a layer of something has been stripped away.
I like it, but I will keep my other edition.
@@classicalbum you do get the original on the DVD and Blu Ray
Frankly, I like this album more than Dark Side or the Wall....(My top 3 , in no order are - Animals, Wish U, and Meddle by the way).
In Pink Floyd's Sheep song on Animals album the "Lords Prayer" is still very unclear lyrics on this (2018 Remix)
So basically everything is louder and clearer
I was just about to leave a comment on the vid offering of the actual remixed Animals when I found this vid comparison. I agree with the video poster...the remix has some nice points but sometimes to the detriment of the original. Case in point (for me) : Perhaps the greatest point of the album IMHO is during Pigs (Three different ones). On the reintroduction after the heavy instrumental break, the organ intro is a repeat of the beginning of the song, except stripped down to the single melody note. This was altered on the remix to include the organ harmony part. This change removes from the rawness of that moment in the music.
That's just one example of why I wish these remixes were left to the original artists, or, maybe spared for albums that were engineered poorly and could possibly be enhanced.
The local shop has got both version and for the life of me I cannot decide which one to get even after watching and listening to every possible comparison video. 😫
Also, even listening to flac files does not help.
It’s noticeably better ... and worth it
Nothing wrong with the original mix. I have original vinyl and a few CDs. I did read that during the Recording process they chose to use an early version of DBX noise reduction instead of Dolby A. And the use of “window edits” on the multitrack tape (not splices, razor blade horizontal edits of individual tracks holy moly). So the original multitrack tape was tortured. Fantastic album though.
I like it. There's a clarity and detail to this mix that suits my aging ears.
Very good point ...
It sounds like David grabbed the multitrack tape and mixed it “me first” .
@@Ontariosound It must be a sad and negative listening experience for you ...
I thought it to be perfect
Honestly you can say anything you want about it but the vocals are so much better holy shit
Sounds great but I like the original mix best
