      Exactly. I’ve been in plenty of discussions about how Animals has long been the PF album that needed a remix the most. It hit that line between being a nice HiFi sounding record and just missing the mark mix-wise.

  • @EverydayAvenger

    From this remix, i concluded that;
    1. Rick deserves much more recognition on this album
    2. David deserves more recognition as a skilled bass player
    3. Nick deserves SO much more recognition as a drummer in general
    4. Roger's artistic vision in 1977 was muffled by the original production

    My major problem with most of the current makeovers is that they don't sound like products of their time any more.
    But the clarity is undeniable.
    This does apply more to The Beatles and others 60s' remasters/remixes.

    • @TheEWFX29
      @TheEWFX29 Před rokem +15

      Yeah it sounds nice and clear but the album originally had a more murky sound and feel. I think I prefer the original mostly because its the version I have always known and loved. It sounds a bit too modern and clean for me. Though I dont hate it but I probably wont be getting it or having it as a go to source. But if those who bought it enjoy it, more power to them.

    • @xeixi3789
      @xeixi3789 Před rokem +6

      @@TheEWFX29 I've seen this pointed out in another videos comment section before, the original Animals mix was never on par with other Floyd albums due to it having been recorded in a different, limited studio. So if anything, this new mix was the mix Animals always deserved that the other Floyd albums got; so I don't get what you guys mean when the other Floyd albums have the similar level of fidelity and mix to this new one.

    • @krnkrp
      @krnkrp Před rokem +5

      Please don't mix remaster and remix, those are two VERY different things, as you can hear in this video. Almost no difference between 80s and 2016 remaster in contrast to the remix. As someone had said, a remaster is like polishing a car. A remix is taking the car apart, cleaning all its parts and building it back up from the ground.

    • @walllable
      @walllable Před rokem +2

      @@krnkrp The fact that remix and remaster doesn't particularly apply to the normal definitions of mixing and mastering doesn't help at all. mixing vs remixing can be pretty different Mixing a song and remixing a song doesn't usually mean mixing the song again, remixing usually means another artist's interpretation of a song, at least in the electronic music scene. Master vs mastering as well, where mastering is generally the final touches on a mix to make an album sound consistent and other vaguely more technical stuff, while a remaster usually involves mixing songs again... It's such a mess!

    • @pw3565
      @pw3565 Před rokem

      I was working on the railway track above the arches adjacent to the power station when it was being rebuilt , the Battersea dogs home is next to the railtrack access where we would get on track, i remember feeling bit sad that the power station only had three chimney stacks erected , i thought the whole thing was being torn down never to be seen again so i took a picture as it stood that day, there was & i think still is a lot of changes in and around that area of london the rooftop horizon is totaly transformed with highrise apartments next to the rail track, there was massive cranes everywhere & when the wind got bad a lot of building materials would cause havoc & get blown all around the track .
      I have to say that i love Pink Floyd & have most of their albums but Animals has a sentimental place in my childhood , i kinda like the slight muddyness of it all because it represented the slight misty dullness of that era , im also almost thinking that the band deliberatly created that feel & sound to match that industrial time feel!?
      But i do & have always wanted to have it in a enhanced state just to hear absolutely every sound in the album clearer. When i play other albums of floyd & various other bands then play Animals the tone is totally noticeable & have to turn volume up so it remained consistant to the levels of the other albums i was playing .
      Overall the original album is an absolute masterpiece & yes i think what they have done with the remake of the album is brought it upto date & inline with the current climate feel for a cleaner fresh new environment free from the gritty muddyness of era’s past . Genius move!!

    I have listened to it twice, and share your opinions about this improvement on what is a true classic. My first listen to this album was early 1977. Later on that year, I was fortunate enough to have 9th row seats at the Coliseum in Cincinnati for the Animals (In the Flesh) tour. That listening was in true quadrophonic sound, as they set speakers in the rear, both sides, and of course the stage around the smaller, more intimate confines of the Coliseum. Algie, as I called it, was on full display as it crept along over my head, along with other inflatables, as they played the entire album, took a break, then played, "Wish You Were Here", in its entirety, followed by "Money", as the lone encore, despite my yelling for more. My brother and I still say it was the best concert we ever saw, and I have seen many. So the remix gets my thumbs up, as it brings back memories from the Year of the Pig.

    Totally with you on this. I think it is perhaps the most effective remix I've ever heard. Brings out so many textures that were buried in the old mix. As for Sheep, I'm not sure they brought the keyboards down; rather, to my ears it sounds like they reduced the stereo spread, so now the keys are a lonely sheep standing exposed in the middle of a field. I share your ambivalence about the vocals, though -- similar to what they did with George'a vocals in the All Things Must Pass remix. Less powerful, more vulnerable...and not sure if that's good or bad.

Being old enough to have bought Animals on its day of release, I find the new mix to be nothing short of miraculous. As you said, it's like a veil coming off. Rick's synth is a revelation, now moody and modern; and Dave's bass playing (yes, Dave Gilmour played much of the bass on the album - listen to the intro of 'Sheep', killer sensitivity and melodic phrasing - just like his guitar playing) is stellar. The separation of the instruments and vocals take a wee bit of getting used to. I love it. It's now my go-to for the album.

I've long had 'Animals' on my list of favorite albums of all time--certainly among The Pink Floyd's best. I have listened to this since I was a kid, early '80s, on LP (two different old copies from then), cassette, CD... It is an extremely familiar album to me. This version sounds like the boys recorded it just this past year, all playing/singing in their best form. It's fresh, and it feels extra relevant right now. The textures, the space between instruments and vocals, the grunt of the drums + bass--everything has more flesh, meat, and sinew on its bones. Rick Wright's keys are outstanding, with layers I haven't heard before now. Roger's singing is probably his best here. Everything has punch, kick, funk, attitude, and grit.

    Dude you're absolutely right I didn't expect much and was blown away by hearing notes and tones I was not able to hear before especially from Rick. The CD sounds good and the Blu-ray sounds phenomenal very comparable to the vinyl! I would love to hear all of the catalog remix now if it's going to be like that. Doesn't sound like a new album is the Same album just way better fidelity!

    I had the same experience with it. Didn't really expect it to be a revolution, but it felt like when you bought a movie on DVD that you'd only seen on VHS. The same film, but suddenly you were noticing details and seeing stuff so much more clearly than you did before, and it gave the movie new depth. I love the new mix, and did a small side-by-side with my UK 1977 copy, and it's a big difference. My only "beef" here is that I feel the guitars are maybe a tad too low on this mix.

    I'm really liking it. I agree with your comment about the mix of Roger's voice at the end, that's the only part where I prefer the original. I hope when they do a proper Immersion edition to match the others they include them all.... with the contentious liner notes 😁

    I like the new mix. Like the Giles Martin mixes on the Beatles catalog, it’s not necessarily better or worse over all mix…. It’s just a different view.
    It’s like putting a great painting in a different frame and with different lighting. It shows you the painting (the songs) in a different way.

    I’m usually not a fan of remixes, but this is so much better than the original mix. You really got me convinced with the samples, it’s almost night and day. It makes it sound a lot more modern but that doesn’t bother me. Not only that but I love what they did with the panning, it gives a lot more headspace.

  • @vicdmise
    @vicdmise Před rokem +8

    I'm a recording engineer and I'm over 50, so I grew up with and love Pink Floyd, specifically Animals. I haven't heard this release except through your video, but just that small impression has told me a lot about what they were doing.
    I can see that they were honoring the original mix, which is great because Alan Parsons is a genius and the original album is beautiful, but I can also tell that what they were doing was trying to bring some of the refinements of modern mixing and the abilities of our modern DAW systems to clean up noise and return some bandwidth and fidelity to tracks recorded on tape. I agree with the choices in that respect, but I think as you mentioned, they've made some creative choices that lose the dynamic of the original. Everything in mixing is about trade-offs: whenever you're mixing a song it's always a toss up between artistic choices, the limitations of the recording material, the limitations of the gear, and even the taste of competing band members, engineer, and producer. As for the limitations of technology, remember that when they mixed this, if you wanted a delay, your most technologically advanced option was an actual tape delay machine like a Binrec (and a few years before that, it would have been rolling out actual tape decks and setting them all manually!) Now, we call up a plugin emulation and hit a preset button and I can do anything I want in 10 seconds. In this case it feels like they made some artistic choices that change some of the storytelling qualities of the original song, for example: less reverb or opening up the filter on a vocal, or changing the volume on the synths, which change how they're perceived. I wasn't in the room when it was done, so I can't tell who was a part of it and who wasn't and what changes they may have wanted to make that they couldn't make on the original mix. It may be that Roger himself thought the vocals were wrong and always wanted to change them, or that he wanted his bass to stand out more, or that he wanted to cut back some of the synths and couldn't in the original, or that David (greatest guitar player ever), wanted his solos to ring out more.
    My personal opinion is it's a masterpiece, and even the original creators should let it stand. If you want to replicate a mix exactly and simply add more fidelity to the tracks using modern methods, that's totally cool, but I don't think you should change the artistic choices. A remaster is great for that because it leaves the original mix completely intact and just attempts to increase fidelity on the song as a whole. A ReMIX literally takes the song apart and starts from "faders down"; it's an entirely new artistic event and creation, even if it replicates an original mix. That VERY different and becomes its own entity. (Just my take on it.)
    Overall, great video. Well done. Thank you.

    Wow I’m just casually watching this video on my phone and even there the difference is staggering. Thanks for the back to back samples. It seems like the 2016 remaster was a negligible improvement over the original which, as you said, was already really good. But I think I’ll have to go out and get the 2018 remix for my collection.

      @kevinmurray6209 Před rokem +1

      Agreed - as with all the Floyd stuff. That would of course be the main problem with how Floyd shared royalties. Gilmour wrote nearly half of 'Animals' (Dogs), yet received only 1/5 of the writing royalties.

      Gilmour already gets far more credit than he deserves. His actions post waters show a man so in love with being a “rock star” that he would do anything to keep his status. Diet Pink Floyd is a joke, and his subsequent constant remasters of only his era of Floyd (can’t wait for yet another Pulse!) show it’s all about the money and pretend clout.
      I’m shocked that this Animals ever saw the light of day.
      Saw Waters in Concert last month, and there’s no way on earth Gilmour could put on a show that even sniffs how good waters still does it.

      @@coryhultquist580, I saw Waters last month as well, it was an amazing show, however, I found this part of your comment to be ironic: "a man so in love with being a “rock star” that he would do anything to keep his status". A cynic could apply the same description to Roger Waters but I love seeing him and I would love to see Gilmour as well.

    Spot on with the analogy of wiping the dusty glass and blowing off the dust on the vinyl… the original recoding felt mouldy in comparison. And for a concept like Animals, there is no need for a muffled soundscape.

    Roger's vocals on Pigs on the Wing sound more vulnerable and personal, more akin to the message of the lyrics. I think that stripping away all the reverb and echo was a good decision.
    I like the overall remix but there are a couple of cardinal sins, the keyboards on Dogs, one, the synths emulating the dogs vaguely resembled their intended effect. Two, the voice in Sheep reciting the psalm was deprived of its robotic nature, I expected it to sound more clearer in the remix but they just took away the effect.
    No bueno.
