- The F-14 Tomcat twin 64mm from Freewing is the best 64mm jet you're going to fly. There is nothing else as powerful or feature packed as this jet. Or, with our setup, anywhere near as agile, either. This jet does damned near everything we wanted from a fighter.

On landings, "high angle attack is not your friend." That's it!!!! I'm so use to coming in with a HOA from F16s, F22, and a Rafale that I keep stall this 3-5 feet off the ground. Thank you!!!
Touch and Go at 11:47
This is what he's singing about at the beginning of Danger Zone in Top Gun. It's how they practice for Carrier landings.
"Metal under tension. Begging you to touch and go." The 'Metal under tension' is the arresting wire at the aft of the Carrier Flight Deck.
Wow! There were some really scary moments! Great reaction time to be able to recover the stalls in wind like that. Definitely putting the F-14 on my wish list... Just need to get a little better at flying first.
Awesome vid Jon. 👌
Dustin is loving his. Great jet. The 80mm so needs to be upgraded...and I bet it will. I notice you got the same wiggle at full sweep we did with the stock gyro. Kind of weird.
In our case it's probably turbulence causing it. There was no calm day that jet flew in here.
Awesome review, Jon. I'm digging the rating system. That throttle mixed wing sweep is friggin cool!
I'm so glad these manufacturers are really putting efforts into new planes. Not just stuffing new tech into 15 year old molds and re-boxing them as "version 8!". 👍
That is jolly Roger's sign on plane. Uss Nimitz. My dad was in vf-41.
This is a FANTASTIC review. I was buying this plane anyway. But now with full confidence.
Happy to help!
Great review. Love the detailed setup guide. Thank you!
GREAT reviews, tips and video! Thanks Jon!
I would pay extra for the twin 80 if it was built robust out of the box like we have to do to upgrade it to be flight capable. 80mm needs to be updated to a version 2 and I would buy it for sure if it had all the fixes, like the landing gear are very week even with grass opps upgrade. The trunions on the retracts are very week for the weight of the plane. They get loose very quickly allowing tons of play
Hey Jon w/out the H & Family.
Love the video again this is like the pro channel that covers everything! Thanks buddy really appreciate it.
Glad you like it!
I found that the 10360T gets really good reception without a extra satillite. The 8360T down to 637T does need a extra satillite receiver to get the same reception.
They use the same antennae - placement is critical with any of them.
I Really enjoy your shakedown's on this Freewing 64mm F-14 Tomcat, And i totally agree 100% that Freewing should do the exact same mod's on its 80mm version
Yeah i dont like there stock gyro at all, im installing my own spektrum gyro/rec i had it out today to get the hang of it and it was all over with some mild wind and i nearly flipped it on some cross wind on landing and that was enuff for me.
Excellent setup and video review, but I noticed you never activated reverse thrust to slow down on landing rollouts. Is it not very effective on this airframe, or did you run out of usable channels?
The latter, ran outta channels and went with flyable features over thrust reverse. Thanks!
You guys are much better and more realistic than other channels.
Not sure if we're better or more realistic. We just fly differently and look to make our airframes reach their full potential. Thanks though!
Good review. Yes am tired of all the major companies using the cheap plastic and rock hard tires! One area they should not be saving pennies on!
Right on, man.
Some of those hard tires make taking off like your drifting a car down the runway
@@Mikeylikesit1968 yep!
The opening line hahaha
Dang it . I just got the 80mm setup and flying…haha.
Topgun maverick
Jet of the year, I am calling it, maybe even next year
Hey Jon, I had a question regarding the orientation of your 10360T. It was my belief that all new programmable AS3X receivers had to be mounted lengthwise parallel to the fuselage. But yours seems to work just fine in a perpendicular orientation. How did you achieve this?
Set the orientation in Forward Programming. It doesn't care what directions it's mounted in so long as it's mounted at a 90 degree angle.
Hey Jon, thanks for the video. Love watch the mods you do to all your planes. I purchased the Du-bro wheels but I realize the rod needs to be much longer for those wheels. Did you find a rods that fits or did you just used a rod with the same dia. and a collar? Thanks
We flew ours on the stock axles and adjusted them until they fit. Didn't run into any issues.
Jon there’s to different CG marks on this airplane “wings area or fuselage “ wich is the right one, if I do wings and then check with fuselage it will be nose heavy if I do wings and then confirm with fuselage mark it will be nose heavy. Wich is the correct CG in this airplane, THANKS IN ADVANCE
We used the wing marks as seen in the vid. You may wish to fly nose heavier than we did.
This has made it on my list now for fpv . I saw Tom hunts video and now this . Sold . Would be awesome to add a weather forecast picture at the beginning to show your flight conditions for us nerds
Forecast could be neat, thanks for the idea!
@@TwoBrosRC my G

You should do a video on the FlyFans Su-27 twin 64mm. I fly many of the jets seen on your channel and the FF su-27 is the most agile and lightweight one I have. The fit and finish is nowhere close to Freewing but the handling makes it worth it
We'll see if we can get one at some point.
Great Video Jon! By fare the best review of this plane on CZcams right here.
Wow, thanks!
On the KMRC afterburner how can it be attached to the 2949-2500 motor as the 3 holes are all on one side?
We used zip ties and ran them through the grill in the back. It's not hard but it takes some time.
Jon what do you think about the agfrc b13dlmv2 servos for the stabs instead of the hitecs?
They won't fit, they're not 17g class servos. The Hitec HS-85s are the correct size for the stabs.
Really useful video, thank you. I have more than enough EDF Jets already, four of which are Freewing! However, based on past experience and your video I've pulled the trigger on this one. Added bonus: With the wings folded, it should fit neatly in the car in one piece, so no need to assemble it at the flying field :)
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Jon, I’m in apex, where are some good places to fly? Thank you.
The Skyhawks RC field in Holly Springs is a good place to go!
nice, but landing gear are NOT trailing link, they are simple oleo. Trailing link gear have the wheel center behind the strut! good job though!
Great video! Love the new rating system. Looks like she flys a little heavy to me, exacerbating the behaviors landing in wind for example. But what a cool plane still!
Hello,
I would like your opinion on which 80mm F-16 is best between E-Flite or FMS. Thank you in advance.
Get the E-flite version if you're in the US. It's basically the same jet, just less expensive and ready to fly with a transmitter.
Thanks again .
is it true that one gets a shorter flight time on a higher c rating battery compared to a lower c rating battery with the same throttle usage? Since higher c rating batteries have a higher discharge.
Nope. You get a shorter flight time from a battery that's not up to the task or isn't the right capacity for the flying you're trying to perform. Higher discharge capability doesn't mean the pack gets sucked dry faster. It means that it can be sucked dry without getting damaged as easily.
@@TwoBrosRC ok,this solved my confusuon😁
I cant find the app on android ANYWHERE to turn off the stock gyro
That's because it isn't out yet.
👍
What do you think about the hitec d85s instead for this jet
They're great, but more expensive. Good luck finding them in stock anywhere!
Hey Jon, when I leave the E20 gyro connector disconnected the gyro is defaulting to gyro on(green). How did you disable the E20 gyro?
We bypassed it entirely by removing the cables. Reference the setup guide at the end where the cables are all removed from the onboard mixer except for the gear door and gear.
@@TwoBrosRC I installed the nose gear door sequencer from my FW ME262 as a experiment and have up and down in under 6 seconds bypassing the f-14's supplied board. the NG door servo still has a little slow down though, but way better than before.
Wow! What a great video. Your visuals, editing, and voiceover work are all awesome. Great flying and information as well. I’m gonna set mine up using this guide!
Much appreciated!
@@TwoBrosRC hey Jon, I'm setting up my Tomcat right now per your guide. I didn't hear you mention any elevator schedule for when the wings are swept. Is any up or down elevator necessary when the wings are back? Thanks!
Some people like the time of the landing gear sequence.
Also, is Dubro going out of business?
Why would anyone like a gear door operating way slower than it does in full scale? We haven't seen a single person yet defend that kind of sequencing. It's obviously a poor choice.
We're not privy to Du-Bro's business condition.
was differential thrust used to perform the cobra spin?
Nope. It's all physical control surfaces.
@@TwoBrosRC that's amazing. holy craap indeed...👍
Been flying this bird for 2 weeks now. All the problems I had was the nose wheel steering linkage come loose over time. Other than that, this jet rocks!
Awesome jet.
Love the Jolly Roger.
Cheers
I Maidened mine in 15mph cross winds and I was a nervous wreck trying to get it to land! I had to bring it in a little hotter than normal to land it safely
Brave man. Happy to see you got it back safely! 🌬️
At first i thought you skull on the tailfin is how it should be but that goes just for the let side (if u look at it from the front) the other is totaly out of place and angled like 30-40°. I don't get how freewing can mess this up so hard
Decal placement isn't always perfect.
@@TwoBrosRC I just hope it can be peeled of easy after cooling it down with ice, so i can add a new one. Otherwise i do what i wanted to do with my e-flite f-114 before i went "Tomcaters" paint and make it into an iranian F-14 :D
Freewing owes us$500 and an apology.
For what?
@@TwoBrosRC You may be having a blast with yours but mine IS A PILE OF CRAP. A Sweep mechanism does not work reliable . today the ESC on the left motor just out of the blue was not calibrated any more right motor pushing harder. Tried to sweep the wings to test a speed dive and they did not sweep back but worked fine on the ground. Just done with this plane I am glad yours is great but mine will be harvested for parts that are still good and reusing the rx in something else.
You should get in touch with Motion. Some of those issues might be due to the previous landings you showcased. There was one video where it stalled and landed on a wing, which may have messed up the servo pretty good.
@@TwoBrosRC Very possibly but I just fought with them over the A10 64 and they issued me a refund. I am sure this plane is a combination of me and a plane with some issues but i am done for now and really just want to move on to something more rewarding like the Mig 29 Fulcrum which is an amazing plane to fly!
Wait till the mixing board craps out and the plane smashes into the ground like my Avanti. So many others have made the same complaint but FW does nothing about. "Pilot Error"
epic
And I just got the old one and new motors and escs 🙄
I’ve seen a lot of people crash this one.
A few people have had issues, but we're pretty sure it's due to not performing a preflight check.
Mostly user errors and not the jet
that's very true, it's not a GOOD airplane at all, favor yourself and DONT buy it
Whats a lot? Like 3 people that say they can fly edfs, but really cant
@@Kbeezzy23 Right , like the guys on RCGs
Thanks for a great review. Im thinking of getting this one, but not sure how large a flying area it needs. There is is a football field near home and it is 150 × 150 mtr in size do you think that is enough space for a plane like this, or shalI find a more open space ? I have flown scale planes forever, this is my first jet.
This shouldn't be your first jet, and that's way too small of an area to fly your first jet. Join us on Discord and our community can give you good info to get started: bit.ly/TBRCDiscord
That's why I wait for your videos before I purchase
Happy to help keep ya informed!
Very good video, and it could be a good setup portion of the video if you're using a Spektrum transmitter. For those of us that are not using Spektrum transmitters it would have been nice if you included information about the throws such as how many millimeters or degree a throw should be set, so that way we can set it for our non Spektrum radios.
Sorry, that's not a thing we do. Set it up for max throws. There's no point in measuring it.
Looking forward to setting up mine. I'll only have 8 channels to play with though.
How about taking the twin 64 control box and gyro and put it into the dual 80 mm plane?
We're using the same setup on both jets. The stock setup isn't what we're interested in.
A most excellent review. Mine is all set up and ready for maiden. Just waiting for winter to end. Mine will be stock, using a Lemon 10-ch RX with no gyro activated, mounted at the front just ahead of the battery bay. I also have the FW 80mm F-14, which flies very well, no gyro, set up using much of RC Geek's parameters. (With this new 64mm, I think the 80mm will be discontinued.) Although there have been several crashes, there have also been many successful flights (on stock plane). I believe many of the crashes were from those who aren't as good as RC pilots/builders as they say they are. They don't understand how gyros work, how to test them before flight. It seems some don't understand what "gain" does or how that works. They don't understand the nuances of receiver brands, function, placement and testing thereof. (Like the fellow who uses CA to coat a thread that is wrapped around a plastic ball end - really?) This model is marketed for "intermediate/expert" RC hobbyists. Just because you've flown 200 planes does NOT necessarily mean you have progressed beyond "beginner", particularly when you lack the understanding of some of the aforementioned topics. I look forward to FW's Blue Bridge unit so that we can tweak the supplied gyro/flight controller (being able to tweak the gyro will help this plane fly better - the pre-set gains are inadequate for many flyers). The APP is already here. We just need that dongle to make it work.
Hope you enjoy it gyro-less - we prefer flying fighter jets with a gyro more for scale purposes than anything, but also to stabilize for turbulent wind conditions as seen toward the end of the vid. It gets gnarly here real fast, so flying gyro-less can lead to wrecks. Plus it's just more fun to go tail heavy and let a gyro make it stable enough to fly.
Day 3 freewing f4

Sure, we'll get right on it when you send us the money for it. FW jets come out of our channel revenue.
Hi love the review,
Have you a link to the wheels and receiver?

Just the video I was waiting for. You may be the reason I buy this model. I have been a bit concerned by the landing characteristics of this model as seen on other videos.
I would love to see your mixes done on Edge TX as I’m not on Specktrum. Will see your guide on discord.
Thanks as always. Great content.
Happy to help! Doing it on any other radio isn't gonna happen with us. We only fly Spektrum and can't afford to buy additional radios/receivers for each type of radio people want demoed - but you should be able to parse the settings and get a general overview of how to adapt the setup we use to your own preferences.
Cheers
Hi. This is a great review. I'm going down the AR10360T route but your link to discord appears to have expired. Can you resend the link please. Thanks
