Welp, just 7 hours after I published this video, Mojang released a new snapshot where they reverted the change xD
Also, a lot of people have suggested using redstone lamps or target blocks instead. These won't work. Redstone lamps have a delay when turning off, and all that target blocks do is redirect redstone dust. Neither of them update BUDs.

They did???? Yay!!
Great! We were loud enough.

yay
Reverted in the latest snapshot!! Thanks mojang, massive respect!
L mojang…
Edit: why is everyone liking all these other comments?? That was literally a great change and it made a lot of sense and should totally be added back in. So the fact they reverted it is bad.
Like it or not, wool should be the only block to prevent sound.
Edit2: it seems like I have to clarify even more so here we go: with the addition of skulk, wool now has the special property of reducing sound… so it would make sense if it was the only block able to prevent noteblock sounds.

Honestly I really liked the sound effects in that example weirdly enough
yeah right its so dumb how people are mad over note blocks making sound but not pistons
When piston make sound we know whatever we were making are definitely working.
@@minecraftfunok and that'll be the new norm to note blocks if its just like that for awhile
Well ig because pistons are a dull, not very memorable sound, so its able to be toned out. Note blocks are a high ding thats is very annoying if not used properly
"Then redstoners can once again have silent circuitry."
Pistons: I'm about to ruin this guy's whole career.
Silent circuitry, how does that work?
Keyword circuitry. Machine parts and the circuitry they are attached to are not the same thing
I think a combination of adding a silent note while still keeping the wool silencing would work best for everyone, music makers included.
Yeah, exactly. Why would you need to add a whole other block just to do that
I agree, wool will still let you conditionally silence when you need that, still allow blocks above it and playing sounds, and still allow them to be always muted for redstone contraptions. win-win for everyone, hopefully.
There is a small section of redstoners, that use noteblocks as an input, instead of buttons, myself included. I do build lots of underwater circuitry, and noteblocks serve as a neat input, that can be nested in the seafloor. While the silent note might work for instances where the activation of the noteblock is used to cause a block update, it does not help in circuits where the change of pitch is used to cause a block update.
@@KTKocks In those cases, couldn't you have it work as-normal, with wool blocks if you need it to be silent?
@@clockworkkirlia7475 How would I be able to interact with the noteblock, if I had wool on top?
I completely agree with you here, even though I don’t do redstone much I can see how this would be a pain and for building when you use them as decoration but you don’t want them to play noise you have to use wool. Sure you can just not use noteblocks but they look nice
If you use them as decoration this change would have no effect though? Doesn't matter if they can play noise or not, with decoration you usually don't expect a player to click everything and it still be silent and exactly how you intended (levers as diagonal support beams, trapdoor fences, pebbles/texture of buttons, especially near trapdoors, fence gates)
What?
I'm pretty sure it just got reverted!

As someone who often uses noteblocks for actual music, i kinda liked this change, because it made it easier to squeeze contraptions into tight spaces with no room for extra air blocks. I see why it’s annoying for redstone tho, so I also really like your idea at 2:00. Noteblocks could still be muted by pushing wool over them, so everyone wins.
Maybe they could add a dedicated block for redstoners to use instead, no one can argue with this simple solution.
I think adding new block would be the best

In fact, it *_is_* really compact… ;)))
I would like a Silencer block. It can be used to prevent sounds from being made, helping you against the new dungeon or basically a simpler way to mute noteblocks. Maybe if the Silencer block could be used in a redstone contraption, it could pause or stop jukeboxes, silence doors/trapdoors. And there could be settings like muting mobs if you have a busy ender ender that makes the dying endermen quieter
I agree w/ u, nice idea!
no I dont think that this is a good idea, the new note one with muting noteblocks with wool is the best idea
I like this idea. This would swing the change from creating a more noisy game to a less noisy game. I would love to be able to silence all pistons, doors, trap doors, fence gates, droppers, dispensers, etc.
Simply adding an extra 'silent' note is a decent solution, but not a perfect one. I often user note blocks as user input instead of buttons/levers and that means the player has to change the note. If the solution was a silent note then these inputs would be noisy. Also, note blocks don't display their current note in any way (without a special texture pack) so if you accidentally click one while building you'd have to tear everything up to find that one block you messed up.
@@metamilo my idea solves this problem, and the silencer is just like it doesn't feel like vanilla minecraft
Maybe have a muffler block that just reduces the sounds nearby? I can't imagine the mute block being too useful. Would it also stop sculk sensors?
I think I'm still somewhat salty with Mojang for some of their changes to redstone, or lack of action on redstone bugs (hello MC-54711 and others). This seems very typical.
I was never very vocal about it though, I admire your effort to bring impact on redstoners to Mojang's attention. The way you've done it here is great, objective and considering everyone's interests.
LMAO to this day I still get emails about that bug report xD

This change was actually reverted back in 22w15a, so redstoners to not have to worry about that change anymore.
Maybe they could re-add the change, and add a new dedicated block for the redstoners? :\
@@rock_rock Hmmm that is actually a good idea
redstone lamps should make light levels depending on the signal strength and the daylight sensor should give off signal strength depending on light level
yes
Rather than adding a new block, they can add the same functionality into the copper block.
why not the crafting bench? Its one of the cheapest blocks to craft
@@Predated2 because it doesnt make any sense
@@dwatys1ace why not tho? it makes less sense than a copper block as you'd expect copper to work more like a redstone block rather than a BUD updater. Then you have the fact that a lot of people already want redstone functionality tied to crafting benches(auto crafting, auto refilling or maybe even a bigger crafting grid) which would easily be a BUD updater and more than twice as cheap as noteblocks.
So I kinda fail to see how it doesnt make sense
@@Predated2 crafting bench is made out of wood, it doesnt have any connections with redstone. copper block on the other hand lacks utility, it would make more sense for it to function as a BUD updater - so it has connections with redstone.
@@Predated2 also the fact that its cheap doesnt mean anything, i even think a such powerful block needs to be more expensive.

I'm glad to see you make a video on this issue! Also I love it that you suggested some alternative solutions as well rather than saying Mojang has to revert back, great video!
u can turn off sound from juke box and noteblocks from menu and pistons are making MUCH more noise than noteblocks
I think the option of giving a similar block works, but would need to still be interacted with by a player. I use noteblocks for the unique redstone characteristics, sounds (I make games, so use noteblocks for experience and to communicate with players), and for input (players can click different ones that are labeled with sign). I am really just hoping they revert them back! Or give a truly equivalent block.
don't you enjoy that sweet sweet music in your contraptions ? OwO
also I thought that target blocks could replace note blocks
They can also just give the sound-proofing properties of the wool to the redstone components.
How does all this work?, I didn't understood the fact of note blocks working that way affects redstoners
@@Omega-AlexGt noteblocks have some properties that some other blocks don't usually have, making it a somewhat good block to use in your redstone projects.
A note block being triggered is a block update, which can be used in combination with observers or BUDs to power parts of a redstone contraption. They are usually covered by a block at the top so they don't make noise, the changes to how they are muted makes it so people have to redesign some contraption in order to keep them silent, and many players find it annoying when they make sounds (though i would say the piston sounds are even more annoying, so it's hard to avoid noisy contraptions anyway)
@@brineeggliang5460 Note blocks can be heard from much further away than pistons. Also, a bunch of pistons firing sounds like a machine working, whereas random noteblocks firing sounds like someone banging on a piano randomly, which I find harder to listen to.
They could make something like a "waxed noteblock" the wax could jam up the speakers, making it silent
Great video! I'm not great at redstone, but this change would REALLY annoy me too! Keep up the amazing content!
The future tense in the title is weird seeing as they’d already made the change, and this was released a few hours before 22w15a, where they un-ruined them. Although I do like the silent setting or alternate block better than just removing the change; sometimes I do want noise but also want something above it.
They ruined them by reverting it
@@aceplante Skill issue
Hot take this is GREAT as without using any extra space you can add a little jingle to your redstone
What if they added a new block, but it was a Redstone Lamp clone that glows (like the glow squid in darkness) instead of illuminating (like a glow squid on fire). It could be triggered to do by right click instead of by redstone, readding the noteblock's original functionality while also subtly also acting as both another silent button (by way of observer) or as a general decoration block.
By glowing instead of illuminating, it probably won't have to trigger light updates, and could sorta justifiably be 0-tick for fun technical purposes.
Gotta love the fact that Mojang takes the advice of the community very seriously and that Minecraft is very mod friendly so even if the community as a whole like things one way, you can always find a data pack or several that tailor to each players preferences.
I'm just wondering how noteblocks silently transmit redstone, but knowing Java Edition, it's probably a 7 year old glitch
Observers can detect the noteblock being activated.
@@Nicoder6884 but wouldn't activating a noteblock make noise?
Oh wait nvm since its muted with something on top, ok i see
If mojang is going to change the note blocks, they need to add 2 more octaves, any musician will tell you its a pain in the ass to arrange songs in a single octave
It would be nice if they had a GUI to interact with instead of having to click them x number of times.
I do think when it comes to "expendable" you can make an automatic sheep shearing farm, which uses redstone, to get wool. It also gives you tons of options to lable circuits for complicated builds.
But, I do agree that note blocks need to be reverted. I don't know the intricacies of how the Allay works, but from a distance it doesn't seem like reverting the change will break that. But, maybe a block like a note block would be a good idea to add, that's silent, for redstone. Maybe even as part of a redstone update even! Could possibly use the Echo Shards from Ancient Cities with some components too. It would also be cool if we used an Echo Shard as the core of a note block.
Better idea: If your build uses a bunch of note blocks make them play a meme as your giant piston whatever it is opens itself up.
I am one of the only people that would actually like this change, as it would allow note block covers with layers to be more compact
Your vids are great man keep up the great work :D
It would be possible to make a list of blocks and entities in the settings, which could be independently divided into what it refers to, for example, by turning off music in the settings, you disable all redstone blocks that you have added to the list
Awesome video! Very well produced, interesting topic too. The only caviat is that the the color saturation burnt my eyes out :/
I think they changed noteblocks to add more enthuses on the fact wool can reduce sound and has nothing to do with testing allays its add consistency with the scull sensor
in sculk sensors, the logic is that the wool blocks vibrations, not sound.
@@HerculesCodingMaster
sound is produced by vibrations, although sound waves can exist at a frequency outside of the range that the human ear can sense, it's incorrect to say that it is silent, it is just inaudible to humans specifically.
to make a distinction between the two is technically correct, but pedantic
I don't think the unmuted noteblocks would have been a problem as redstone containing pistons is still quite noisy. That clip you showed had the majority of the noise coming from pistons. However, I do like the idea of having a muted note for the noteblock. Another thing is that you are using them for music you can still manually mute them by pushing a wool block with a piston rather than any block.
Pistons don't have a "pitch", so the sound they make is much easier to ignore. The sound of more blocks is far more obnoxious, especially when you don't want to hear it
Great video explaining the problem!
I wanted to point out that at 2:23 it is mentioned that you would no longer be able to mute with pistons. But the wool block still exists, they could have simply kept the wool muting behaviour and satisfy everyone.
I'm aware the change was reverted and this really doesn't matter anymore, but I wanted to point out that this 'silent note' concept could work really well.
You sound like Kurzgesagt
just delete note blocks xddddddddddd
the best way to find a solution is think it while in pooping
they could add a single block that displays whether its turned on/off, and allows redstone and such to be placed on top. like a redstone lamp but it doesnt provide light, and it can have redstone on top
I honestly really like this change, since it allows note block songs to become more compact since you can place note blocks on top of each other and wire them in more creative ways. If you don't like the note block sounds, then you can always go into the jukebox/noteblocks volume option and mute it, thus making them silent while also having the benefits of making compact songs.
Going into the volume options is a workaround, not a solution. Sure it works, you shouldn't have to do it in the first place.
also muting noteblocks sounds isn't an option in music contraptions that use both noteblocks for signal transfer *and* noteblocks to play sound as an output
If you place a note block on top of another note block, you can't choose an instrument? You're forced to use the bass as the instrument due to the note block below it afaik
@@Purplers Well yeah it's a workaround, but there is no workaround for compactifying note block songs unless you install a datapack or mod that allows noteblocks to make function like that. I do believe that noteblock sounds in redstone contraptions is really just a minor inconvenience just like how endermen making loads of noise in an enderman farms is a minor inconvenience. The volume options are there to make them less annoying. I do think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, since it's huge for the noteblock community, but annoying for the redstone community.
@@Platypus_3112 You can place a block between the 2 note blocks to change the instrument without needing an extra air block in between them. Also the bass is one of the most commonly used instruments, so it is often played with other instruments at the same time.

I miss the time of real redstone… when redstone was pure and visually beautiful… sadly most new redstoners can't understand it :/
What do you mean? Do you miss the repeater noodling? I will admit old redstone contraptions have a certain charm to them, but times change and new easier solutions appear to old complicated issues.
id like a redstone transformer block, where it just passes an update when powered
Hey Purple, what's the build at 0:32 and 0:36?
Also, very good explanation in the video... I do a lot of redstone contraptions and I use a SH*TLOAD of noteblocks in my redstone because they're silent and a very good component like you said. If my contraption has noteblock noises in it, I will be very irritated by those sounds. Sure, there are alternatives to this like hoppers and pistons, but I don't use them because they are expensive.
I have an idea.
Different types of noteblocks.
Ones crafted with stone instead of wood will not play music. One crafted with gold instead of Redstone won't be a Redstone block but it will still play music and at a high pitch. Other materials for the noteblocks would work, like netherack uses distorted notes. I imagine that if you combine a netherack noteblock on gravel you get like a nice, dark drum.
I do both redstone and note block machines, and I'd love a way to attenuate them. Carpets could be a perfect fit, alternatively snow, where the number of layers correspond to the level of attenuation.
I actually kinda liked the sound that stair contraption made lol
As someone who actually uses noteblocks for their intended purpose (making music), I was excited to see this change and wish Mojang had kept it. It would be so nice to be able to place things on top of them and have them still make sound.
I think there should be a new redstone block that replaces the noteblocks use in redstone (as a bud).
I feel like wool should also dampen any sound effects coming behind it, similar to how sculk sensors dont detect when their is wool or this noteblock wool thing.
I think your Redstone build sounds sick with the restone lol
This change (which has been reverted) could have make the redstone machinery even better though, as you could tune the noteblocks so that they play a song when the machine is activated, while still keeping it compact.
They should add an alternative type of notebook, make the default type now required to add wool or something to a noteblock to make it silenced like normal. Or if you craft a noteblock normaly you get this silenced only by wool note block, or perhaps an unsilencable noteblock, which is something I always wanted to see in the game since I often try to make doorbells with pressure plates but since there's a block above things become annoyingly complicated.

Wait, do circuits make noise without wool?
And i thought activator rails not working on slopes was bad
1:00 I think It sounds kinda nice
make it an option on startup like phantoms. just on that's mute note blocks with wool
you could get a block such as the target block and give it the features that the old note block had except no noise

*Deafening mechanical sounds with occasional noteblock sounds*

I think they should add 2 blocks , one being something like a solid updater , and one being a transparent updater, therefore making transparent updaters smaller , since we dont have to use pisons or rails that use up 2 blocks (and bells suck they are noisy and still need a block on top) . But what i think would be a good idea but i might be wrong , just make hoppers updaters .
I love how you just casually name-drop cubehamster as your friend
Why is the saturation so high in this video? It's blinding me.
0:58 lol this fragment sounded cool btw
hope redstone doesn't get ruined like pvp
Isn’t there an option in settings for just noteblock/jukebox volume?
I think the reason why they did that is to do with the sculk sensors as using wool can block the sculk sensors from detecting player movement and therefore, stop the shriekers from activating and eventually summoning the Warden
wool should muffle pistons in a way. for instance if you placed wool on top of the piston and where it would extend, standing atop would have less noise then standing next to it.
Note blocks have been a staple of redstone for their proprieties, but not for what feels like very long, in fact, for most of minecraft's history, we didin't have a clean alternative to BUD updater blocks, but all the way back in 2013, there was: fence gates. They were everywhere!
Maybe redstone ore could be used? Idk if it goes into its glowing state when receiving a redstone signal.
Can’t you just turn off the note block audio in settings so note blocks make no sound but you can still hear things

idk how ur like the greatest redstone man along side with mumbo jumbo. even ur builds in 1.5.2, i cant make them
Hey mom! I have a cameo in a purpledragonnuke’s video! :D
Jokes aside, everytime Mojang touches redstone in Java edition, disaster follows, and this video confirms it once again.
P.S.: 🪜😏
The community cries loud enough when anything is changed that Mojang listens. Meanwhile on Bedrock we can’t have anything useful; all the good bugs get patched and it takes them 60 years to patch a random despawn or death bug
That being said, I would also be annoyed with this change if they didn’t already revert it
Can't you just mute note block sounds in sound settings? "Music/note blocks" volume slider if I remember correctly?
The stair redstone thing with the note blocks sounds cool as fuck
There was a time where your piston door can play megalovania if it doesn't get drowned out by the side of pistons lol
imagine building music but then the entire allay group next door gets in
I think that it's nice because now you can add a sound cue to everything. Imagine building a door, it could be a security feature that tells you when someone has entered the door.
did the loud pistons not give it away?
lol yeah but the 10000 pistons in that circuit which are also very loud
if the change is implemented, i think it would be cool to see redstoners take advantage of it, and make music that goes along with the build
Make something so when you right click a note block with wool it is silent and with sheers it makes noise again
The demo piston door was really good, as it was basically a inbuilt doorbell
to quote the old stop motion show Trapdoor "If youve got a problem, stick a worm in it"
so mojang just adds earthworms and problem solved, right?
RIGHT?
I guess it would at least add soundeffects to the contraptions.
