  • Become a licensed professional involves several steps. First, do you want to the responsibility? How do you even find out what that additional responsibility is? Developing communications skills is as important as the technical ones. Find out about the requirements for licensure in your state, and what the requirements are to take the NCEES exams and the exams of your state licensing board. This involves a lot of reading and detailed parsing of the requirements. To properly apply, not only do you need a detailed resume, you need a weekly or monthly summary of what you did, not what your employer did. Your professional association and volunteer activities can count for a lot when you apply, so build your resume in those areas too. These and other details are covered in this packed video.

A sample work experience history would be beneficial. Thanks for your videos.

Kinda addressing several comments here: Licensed land surveyors are expected to be competent at what they do. To get competent, they get a combination of education, mentored work experience, and to a large experience a significant amount of expertise developed through their own initiative. I am getting ready to re-do this video as some of the systems in place for testing, etc. have changed. I'll try to integrate as many suggestions as I can into the new one.

Just found this as I'm interested in learning the pathway to this profession. Perfect timing! From what I've discovered it seems a 2 year degree > NCEES FS exam > LSIT application is the most direct route for entry. At least for California where I'm residing.

What is the difference between a plane surveyor and a geodetic surveyor?
Do they work off the same benchmarks? I need to hire a surveyor. I can use some clarification.

Did you ever find an answer to your question?

@@terrycloud6437 yes they both work off the same benchmarks so I asked several surveyors if vertical lines are parallel. Most agree they are. I know for a fact I can see 40 miles to a point of land standing on a beach that should be 1000 under the horizon according to spherical math. I will let you draw your own conclusion from my findings.
