I'm in this grey area, I'm an unlicensed surveyor for a large private gold mine. I do all the surveyor work on the mine with all the equipment and the high accuracy measurements however I can't do anything that is related to permitting or boundaries. I'm looking to start doing drone work on my own and it's a little frustrating that I know how to do everything survey grade and assist in making hundreds of millions of dollars but since I didn't go to school and get the license I will be limited to use my experience.

Thank you for speaking up on the topic of drone mapping. I am moving to Texas and I wasn't aware of the whole needing a surveyor on site. I'll log into the backoffice of DroneU and go thru the mapping section. Thank you once again! Saved mah butt!
The proper way to assess accuracy is by calculating 95% confidence levels of a series of independent measuments using tool of higher accuracy... Not gis imagery. And claiming accuracy, weather legal or not, implies a heavy amount of liability on your end sans some type of hold harmless agreement. It's terrible practice to claim accuracy without the knowledge necessary to do it. And you don't have it obviously. What datum do you use? Geoid model? Do you post process GCPs in a redundant network to published marks? What is your 2-sigma confidence level per FGDC? Any consideration for ASPRS ground cover assessment? Those are the type of questions you can expect to hear in court. :-) Please read up on contract law as well... Good luck đ
Great information you answered many of my questions concerning this topic.
Basically, topographic mapping for any civil engineering/architectural design requires that it is made under the responsible charge of a licensed surveyor.
Good points about what you can and canât map.
If a realtor asks me to draw the property boundary lines on the aerial photo of a property for sale; is that something which would require a surveyor to approve? Or can a simple disclaimer stating "lines are approximate only" be acceptable?
Also. The USA is not a true democracy and never has been. It is technically a democratized republic.

"Part 107" Drones are going to huge business over the next ten years.
There are less and less Professional Surveyors and projects are becoming more and more complicated, while required data is becoming much more in depth(Government entities require the most of all) ... people who offer services like yours are absolutely needed ...
This being said, if a Professional Surveyor, performs a Boundary Survey and sets control, then wouldn't your maps be subject to the survey, since it's already subject(constrained by), to the control?
I let my license go bye bye in 2013 after over 40 years ... now I want to play with Drones and I want to play with Photogrammetry(maybe even LIDAR and RTK ... FOR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES, only ...
WARNING! Title is not accurate (probably because it was intended as clickbait). I don't comment on videos much but 85% of this video is the guy on the right being upset with agencies that claim certain drone missions are illegal (which is probably a common occurrence). He drowns out his partner most of the time which is frustrating. I get that he's passionate but he didn't provide the info I was expecting.
If you need sign and seal, then you need a surveyor.

LOL ok. I dread coming to that state every time I have to. Some states certainly have more freedom from bureaucratic tyranny than others... California has been successful, that isnt in question, but they are getting more and more restrictive and the taxes are driving folks out of state. Not to mention the debt they are rolling up. The state took a sharp left turn a few years ago. You have to admit that. It isnt sustainable. My friends that I visit out there hate the direction the state has taken.
These podcasts are not formal, boardroom type lectures. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't let some of their perspectives and personal feelings be known

This is ridiculous man. You have a license to fly a drone, not to make maps. Just because you can push a few buttons and output data doesnât mean you should. You are legally responsible for every digit you put on a map or in a report. If you are doing volumes For estimating bids and planning only thatâs not as bad, but if that are being used as basis for payment you need to be careful guys... Thatâs what the program saidâ is not a legal argument good luck with that. Put the time in and get your survey license, or quit whining and pay a surveyor to sign the map.

I would like to see your idea of a quality title survey to ALTA standards. If you want to be a Surveyor, quit looking for loopholes and trying to justify breaking laws that exist to protect the public from charlatans like yourself, and do what is necessary to become a Licensed Surveyor.
You are providing poor examples because measuring your yard is not commercial and police are exempt.
Well, then modify that analogy to measuring your parking lot at your truck terminal to see how much gravel you need. Or an asphalt company measuring to see how many sq feet they will need to pave... Now it is commercial. :P
Please... that means a contractor could not use a measuring tape for anything. Its about Legal boundaries and the ownership of the property. As far as anything else it can not be used as a legal document of authority.

This comment puts the topic in the right context. You can measure something for your own personal use but, the instant that you make a contract with a client or receive money for a service then you fall under the state laws that control commerce and licensing. If the law says something to the effect of defining points on the surface of the earth, photogramentary or the creation of topography is under the state definition of surveying then it must be done under the direct supervision of a Licensed Surveyor. Direct supervision is his employees collecting data, not a third party.
