This song was written by the bass player Steve Harris, it is about the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, during the Crimean War. History and Metal, you can't go wrong!

"Transylvania", "Genghis Khan", "Ides of March", which leads into "Wrathchild", and "Losfer Words, Big Orra" are all of Iron Maidens instrumentals. However a vast majority of Iron Maidens music, ESPECIALLY their newer stuff (2000-present), have long instrumentals complimented by lyrical parts to tell a tale. One day I hope you can experience the Empire of the Clouds. Until then check out their instrumentals and more songs. Would love to hear your opinions. Especially on the masterpiece that is The Isle of Avalon ;)

Iron Maiden - Genghis Khan ~ an instrumental, from their second (and in my opinion their best) album, Killers. Or, you could listen to The Ides of March/Wrathchild, from the same album... Ides of March is an instrumental that leads into the main track.

Maiden are great, I've seen them live multiple times and it's been a effing great show every time. The last show I went to was shortly after their lead vocalist, Bruce Dickinson, had beaten cancer and he still was so damn full of energy it was hard to believe. One of the all time great metal vocalists. For me the three best singers in metal are Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford. That being said, you need to react to Judas Priest. If you want a song that leaves you breathless: Painkiller. If you want something that grooves: Troubleshooter or Devil's Child. Or you could go with their early era which sounds a bit like Sabbath sometimes: Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver - or Victim of Changes. Or you could try their Peter Green/Fleedwood Mac cover: The Green Manalishi. Or off the same album: Delivering The Goods or Hell Bent for Leather. Other solid choices are The Hellion/Electric Eye, Screaming for Vengence, You've Got Another Thing Coming, Freewheel Burning, Jawbreaker or (of course) The Sentinel. I could go on for some time but I think that's enough so you can get a pretty good picture of them

Definitely Rhime of the Ancient Mariner, basically Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem sung by Bruce Dickinson and great breakdown and music in long-form song.
So many great Iron Maiden songs to choose from. Anything off "Piece of Mind" (which is where the Trooper is from), "Aces High" is a great fast track from "Powerslave" (basically anything off there), anything off "Number of the Beast". I could go on and on about Iron Maiden. Seen them live twice in the last 10 years, does not suck.

Steve's bass playing makes this so unique, the way it gallops is just so different and puts you in that frame of mind of charging into battle. Bruce of course is flawless as usual, Adrian's and Dave's solos are off the chain and Nikko knows nothing but the way forward on drums. These dudes are all time greats.

My fav instrumental songs of'em. Also because of the fact that they got 2 lead guitarists, they do so much of 2(sometimes 3) guitar harmony riffs and cool solos on their songs wth vocals. So don't worry on instrumental sections when it's a Maiden song!

Bro. Lead singer's name is Bruce Dickenson. Really interesting dude (singer, fencer, commercial airline pilot, brewer, author). I saw a quote from him saying he saw his job in the band as the guy that had to take a whole big arena and make it seem like it was a small pub. He really does this in a live show. Looks like they are going to tour in 2019. You should go check them out.

So many of their songs are ties to history. This was written by bassist and founder-member Steve Harris, the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War.

This song is about The Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. The Crimean War was fought from 1853 to 1856 between England and the French Empire versus the Russian Empire. Specifically, the Calvary Commander Lord Cardigan thought his light cavalry was being sent to prevent the Russians for capturing some artillery that was left on ground that was overrun by the Russians, but a miscommunication of orders sent the Light Brigade on a frontal assault against a well defended Russian artillery battery. Almost all of the Light Brigade were killed in the engagement. There is a poem called "The Charge of the Light Brigade" that tells this story and most likely is the basis for this song.
