Looking back at the Chargers in the late 2000s, it is truly shocking they didn't win at least one Super Bowl, first it was this year, next year they lose Philip Rivers only conference championship appearance, a couple years later, 13-3 and another first round exit, and in 2010, one if the greatest and most complete statistically teams in NFL history, and not even make the playoffs. It's actually really sad, and I'm not even a Chargers fan.

Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Steelers, Patriots, Ravens, Broncos, Patriots, Broncos, Patriots, Patriots, Patriots, Chiefs.
      Or in other words:
Brady, Big Ben, Manning, Brady, Big Ben, Manning, Big Ben, Brady, Flacco, Manning, Brady, Manning, Brady, Brady, Brady, Mahomes.
That's what Rivers had to deal with his entire career while he was on the Chargers.

Not only did this outcome bring the AFC Championship to Indy, but the Chargers had our number at the time (and would in fact eliminate the Colts the next two seasons) and L.T. would've been extremely tough for a Colts run defense that had struggled prior to the playoffs, especially in SD.

Two dropped sure fire INTs. A costly unsportsmanlike penalty which on a DB which gave the Pats a 1st down. The Rivers fumbles. And inability for the WR’s to catch crucial throws. Jackson’s lack of mindfulness to drag both feet in the endzone. And, of course, the infamous INT and fumble and Kaeding blowing his second consecutive playoff FG. In 2001 which was Martys first year as Redskins head coach, they started 0-5 and were without question the worst team in the league. But he got the guys playing, and they finished strong at 8-8. A disappointing season overall sure, but they showed signs that they were trending in the right direction. Then Dan Snyder got involved when he shouldn't have, and wanted to split Martys role. He wanted him to be just the head coach, instead of having him continue on as both head coach and GM. Synder gave Marty both of those roles when he convinced him to join the Redskins.

Spanos was a dirty, rotten, petty, & vindictive scumbag for doing that.

I agree that Marty was great coach but his poor decision making all by itself was enough to cause the Chargers to lose this game. He had them go for it on 4th and 11 on their own 30 yard line in the first quarter when they could have kicked a 48 yard field goal. Then he used a challenge flag in the 4th quarter after McCree was stripped by Troy Brown and it was clearly before he was tackled. A few minutes later they are out of time outs and in need of a field goal to tie the game so they spike the ball and kick a 54 yarder and miss, ending the game. Those two decisions if not made by him are more than likely a 6 point swing in the Chargers' favor, which would have resulted in them playing Indi the week after, a team that they consistently beat during this era. I love Marty but his decision making in that game is something that I will never forget.

This is just another of example of the Patriots just waiting for the other team to fuck up for them to take advantage of. That’s what separates them from everyone else. Here’s what comes to mind:
2006- Chargers fumble after potential game winning interception
2014 - Seahawks inexplicably pass on the 1 yard line which is picked off
2016 - Falcons, with number one rushing attack, squander 28-3 3rd quarter lead. They were in position for game winning field goal and Ryan gets sacked to push them out along with turnovers on passing plays
2018 - Chiefs jump offside in AFC championship game on a play where they intercept Brady for game sealing interception
Team after team fucks up aginst these guys in the playoffs except for the Broncos and Giants. They don’t make those mistakes.

2006 is a sore spot for Patriot fans too. It's widely considered a "Missing Ring" season. The 2006 Patriots were arguably one of the best Patriots teams ever. '06 was the first Brady era team with a high powered offense combined with an elite defense. Patriots were leading 21-6 at the half vs the Colts and 38-34 with 3:49 to go in the 4th. IMO they would've steam rolled the Bears in the Super Bowl (Rex Grossman lol). 2006 was obviously a season before they went 16-0. 2006 and 2007 very easily could've been back to back Super Bowls and 5 out of 7 since 2001. It's not a stretch to say Brady could have 7 rings instead of 5 (you could go the other way too...).

Ian Clancy huh? It’s considered a missing ring because of the AFC Championship but not because this 06 team was good, this was one of the Patriots weakest teams. The defense was very elite, but the offense had very few weapons. Benjamin Watson and Daniel Graham were easily their best receivers, followed by a 38 year old Troy Brown… if you want the first high-powered offensively Patriots team, you look at 2004. An absolute monster of an offense combining Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk, who combined for over 2000 rush yds, with Brady’s newly refined deep passing game featuring David Givens and David Patten, and of course the Patriots usual bread and butter underneath junk to Deion Branch and Troy Brown. They also had the same defense that was #1 in 2003, when the Pats had won games 12-9 and 9-0. The defense was nearly as good in 2004, finishing at #2 behind the Steelers (despite missing Ty Law and their CB2 Ty Poole almost the whole season). But the Patriots offense blasted the Steelers #1 defense in the AFC Championship in a revenge game from Halloween as Big Ben lost for the first time as a pro in a 41-27 mugging at Heinz field. And as for the Colts #1 offense, well the Pats D held it to 3 points in the divisional round. And of course they went on to win the Super Bowl, completing the last back to back in the NFL, but in very different style from their 2003 title. I might even take the 2004 team to beat the 2007 team, given the fact that the defense was younger plus the Patriots played their best football in 04 at the end of the year instead of at the beginning like in 07. The 04 team could easily have gone 16-0 had Corey Dillon been healthy in Pittsburgh the first time (I doubt they have that let down loss vs Miami right after clinching the division if they are 13-0 going in, having beaten Pittsburgh). They mauled two great teams in the playoffs, and played one of their worst games of the year in the super bowl and still won.

The patriots never were really out of a game but a handful of times during Bradys tenure. They usually played mistake free football and capitalized when the other teams made a mistake. That's basically the Patriots' blueprint.

@@df6148 we really don’t feel bad at all. Because all those teams’ fans spent the better part of the previous four decades laughing at us. The last two decades were our revenge against many of them. Giants fans notwithstanding. We still hate them.

Amazing the patriots even got to the postseason, let alone beat this team. Brady was their offense, and Wade Phillips is one of the few who always knew how to get to Brady and have his number, but Tom is so good at having the ultimate last laugh, and that game winning drive pretty much sums up his career as a whole.

This game was just chargers intentionally giving the game to patriots. Not really a credit to Brady who lost the next week vs colts and ran off like a baby.
