Drew Bledsoe comes on in relief in his last meaningful contribution to the Pats; glad he had a hand in the team's success in their first SB-winning year. A real pro's pro.
Bledsoe was better than Brady at this point in their careers, Drew's injury is the only reason Tom became the starter
@@SnoopyReads... 😂 kid tom was better they just didn't know it yet 😂 he won 6 rings with the pats .. how many did drew have? Exactly 💯
@@sukmynutFACTS.
@@SnoopyReads Who's debating that point?...
@@SnoopyReadsThey would have gone 5-11 that year if Drew hadn’t gotten hurt. I loved Drew, but the Pats were abysmal for the game and a half he played that year. He could make throws that Brady couldn’t, absolutely. But, this offense was geared towards quick passes, play action and screens, which Brady was much better at selling. They never had much luck with any of that through Drew’s career. Drew was immense in this game, no doubt.
The Pats were supposed to get destroyed in this game. It was honestly a good display by Bledsoe in his final game as a Patriot. People forget how much he did for the organization before Brady. Bledsoe and Parcells turned the Pats into one of the NFL’s model franchises in the mid-late 90’s.
My favorite Patriot
Mehoy Minyoy he went 10-21 with just 100 yards and almost a pick six. He barely survived. Brady went 12-18 with 115 in less time than Bledsoe. Without Brady putting Bledsoe in good position to get a td,the special teams td, dropped pick six And 4th qtr turnovers it’s over. Steelers complete the comeback. This is definitely why Belichick went with Brady in the Super Bowl.
Mehoy Minyoy But he did do enough I guess. If they started the game with him they definitely would’ve lost.
Brotato Chip Don’t forget this was the #1 defense in the NFL they were playing against, back then that meant you had to win through other means than just offense. Bledsoe didn’t have his best game as you pointed out with the stats, but he got the yardage and touchdown that he needed to win the game. It was him ending his time in New England on a high note.
@@waffles5433 special teams really propelled the Pat's. Touchdown on that blocked kick in the second half proved to be more of the difference. I feel if bill had a chance to replay that game, he would have put Brady back in. Looking back it this game, honestly, the Pat's won this game because of Stewart and special teams. Pats should have closed the game out offensively in the second half but couldnt for whatever reason. I dont think it was necessarily because the Steelers had a number 1 defense. Looked more like patriot self inflicted mistakes that let the Steelers stay in the game. Then Stewart being the awful qb he was gifted the Pat's with two ints they hardly had to work for.
Last thing that Bledsoe ever did for the Patriots was manage this game after Brady got injured and help get them to the Super Bowl.
Drew was a solid QB himself
I’ve always considered this Bledsoe’s goodbye to all of us NE fans.
Bledsoe continued the drive Brady began and orchestrated the Patriots ONLY offensive touchdown. The Patriots offense did not score in the 2nd half

This game is a reminder that the game is won in all THREE phases of the game. Special teams won this game for New England, if not, a big majority of it.
No one gives imporrtance to all 3 phases like BB does...
Yup. It's why Brady's not the goat. He's a great QB who always has a finely prepared team every week, thanks to the brilliant Bill Belichick. How many times has Brady faced a great team, struggled mightily, and been bailed out by his defense and special teams. TB12 doesn't win all these games outside of New England. How can people not see that.
Yep! That's a Belichick staple of football. Great special teams.
The defense two cmon 2 int 4 quarter
@@pnwguy00 And you look like a clown. Brady is top 5 in passing yards and TD's playing in TB. GOAT.
2001 Steelers were a classic example of a great team held back by its QB. That team was loaded.
I don't blame that loss on slash...I blame it on the block fg/ forward lateral or troy Edwards running out of bounds untouched in which the 1 punt was on the left hash Mark and the 2nd kick the refs move it to the right hash Mark..and the fact that we started the bus who was coming back from injury...famous amos should of gotten every touch but on goal line plays..

Just a reminder, Bledsoe stayed in for another drive after that hit by Mo Lewis. That dude was tough as nails.
Drew was bleeding internally, which is why he thought he could still play. It's later that he and everyone realized how serious his injury were. The man had three liters of blood in his abdomen and chest. He could've easily died.

@@teddybear1792 it was pretty close, literally pretty much the same thing. This game he was hit on the side, Mo Lewis drilled him in the chest plate with his helmet.
That was no coincidence
That throw by Bledsoe at 14:33 is a thing of beauty! Incredibly clutch too considering it was 3rd and long, tight game in the 4th, deep in their own territory.
Drew had a cannon. He was the prototypical gunslinger QB. He was really accurate, too. Him, Elway, Favre and Marino battled each other in some really epic shoot out games.
A couple of thoughts on this game
1. This was a very entertaining game.
2. Troy Brown balled out
3. Steelers' special teams really shit the bed
4. Plexico Burress was a beast
5. Both Brady and Bledsoe had batted incompletions that could've easily been returned for six
6. I can't believe the Patriots are still winning super bowls til this day lol
Plexiglass was ASS back then.
Brad- The Patriots play in the weakest division in the NFL which is why they were always the top seed during their run. But to be fair, they always had good players. Credit to their organization for their ability to properly evaluate talent.
6 SBs baby!!, should be 10.
@Jay D HA!! #7 BABY!!! #7!!!
You forgot cheaters are disqualified. Trash.
Fun Fact: The Patriots only scored 3 offensive touchdowns the entire postseason in 2001. They also scored 2 special teams touchdowns (both in this game) and 1 defensive touchdown (Ty Law pick 6 in the Super Bowl).
3 defensive touchdowns means 3 possessions were taken away from the pats offense
Seems like the greatest dinasty in football history started doing very few things on the offence and great things on the defence. But then Brady showed what he is like.
And don't forget that winners are always lucky when they need to be lucky.
and Brady got a TD in the SB and lead the game winning drive.. You're point? This was the "Old Era" not todays pass happy era.. People either forget or choose to ignore the fact this Run spans over 2 different era's of footballs.. first 3 SBs were in the old era and the last 2 in the new era..

They totally sucked until they picked up Parcells and actually put some money into the franchise. Hell, even in 1985 when they went to the S.B. I had to listen to them on AM radio all season long because they couldn't sell out Sullivan Stadium. Don't get me wrong, I was happy for Grogan and the rest of the guy, but let's be real.... They had zero business being on the field against the 1985 Chicago Bears.
@@erikgour3475 To be fair, apart from maybe the Rams...nobody belonged on the field with the Bears that year. They were the original one year wonders like the 2013 Seahawks. It wasn't until Joe Gibbs figured out how to beat the 46 a year later (and McMahon being out helped) that their reign of terror ended. The Patriots beating Miami in Miami and denying Shula one final SB appearance was the real Superbowl.
What really made all these incredible early dynasty big time patriot heartstoppers was listening to the greatest play by play announcer in NFL HISTORY, Mr. Gil Santos on the radio calls with Geno of course. That legendary voice / style will & has been missed since he retired in 2013. RIP to you Gil, you are thee best ever without a doubt
I'm glad that Drew got one more moment to be in the spot light with the Patriots that season. Without him, perhaps they never make it to New Orleans. That touchdown drive was vital.

True story: Teddy Bruschi, and Willie McGuinest, the 2 main parts of this championship winning Defense, walked out, ready to play. Willie then saw a line of bags. He asked the security guards what they were for. He said “they were for the family’s, and players of the Steelers organization, so we can go down to New Orleans”. New Orleans, was the location of the Super Bowl, the next week. It had to be the next week, because of the 1 week lockout for 9/11. Anyway, Willie showed Teddy, who then brought out every player, and coach from New England, Bill Bellicheck, Tom Brady, Drew Bledsoe, Ty Law, everyone. Teddy then said “you see this guys??? This is all there stuff, so they can just fly down to New Orleans. That’s how confident they are, that there gunna kick are asses. This game should show the Steelers’ issues with the patriots date way back before the Mike Tomlin era. The Steelers were heavily favored in this game. As a matter of fact, the Steelers were 1-4 in AFC Championship home games prior to the 2005.
Kevin Stewart Bill Cowher was a underachiever to be honest. Had two chances in the AFC title games in 2001 and 2004 and failed miserably

This was the last year they played the early Championship games 12 30 start.
Thank goodness for that - I live on the West coast and I HATED the 9:30AM start times in the playoffs.
Man the 1 thing that Bledsoe had over Brady was his powerful arm. Bledsoe could throw darts for 80 yards BUT he was kina big and clumsy and that was his downfall. Its to bad because he was so good to. I remember when he got hurt and the announcers were like "OMG what are we going to do now... no way Brady can do what Bledsoe does.. we are in serious trouble without Bledsoe" lol little did they know.
yeah bledsoe had better arm than brady, thats why brady went drafted in the 6th round for a reason at the very last pcik, everyone's critique on him is kind of like yours, that he is not very talented at all and is not athletic and has no arm, thats how teams viewed brady when looking at the draftee guys, he was even meant to be 3rd string qb guy
BRADY'S ARM IS UNDERRATED

"Young Tom Brady" haha feels weird saying that out loud in 2020
That Bledsoe td pass resembles the one Brady threw in the super bowl a week later.
If you watch the America's Game on the 2001 Patriots they mention it I believe. Same play. Really shows how great Charlie Weis was.
Ace Tipton same play except the SB one was from under center offset instead of shotgun offset
@@TheLocalLt yeah that's what made Weis great. Just little detail changes that in the scheme of things don't matter all too much, but the guys upstairs dont recognize it from old film and can't call it out til it's too late.
Ace Tipton yep the key to the pats offense even post-weis is that they run the same 5 or 6 plays but from all different formations. Everyone on the field has to be able to perform any of the jobs because the Pats will call the same play from 23 personnel as they will from 01 or 00 personnel. This is why Chad Ochocinco couldn’t fit in the Patriots offense, he wasn’t good at any of the positions besides Z. On the Pats you need to be able to play Z, Y, X, TE, FB, HB. Every player needs to know and be able to perform with at least basic adequacy each of these positions, the most important being HB/FBs and WRs needing to be able to to run Z, Y, X, and TE routes from both out wide and out of the backfield
@@TheLocalLt agreed. That's why guys even recently like James White and Cordarrelle Patterson (among MANY others) have had such sudden success with the Pats

There's like 2 or 3 times the Steelers could've been in the Superbowl but brady had to exist
More like 4-5 times

I can't fucking stand the guy (I am a life long Chargers fan), but there is no denying his absolute dominance of the league the last 2 decades. I can't fucking wait for the day when Brady gives the retirement press conference just so the rest of the league can finally stand a chance at a championship because until he's retired he is going to keep crushing the dreams of at least the rest of the A.F.C. because it feels like every single year the AFC championship is the Pats beating whichever team that makes it out of the divisional round. This is his 9th straight AFC championship appearance and I personally don't think Andy Reid and Pat Mahomes stand a chance of beating the Pats this weekend, so it's going to be the Pats vs either the Rams or Saints, and I think the Saints are going to take care of the Rams on Sunday, setting up a Brady vs. Brees super bowl, which will be one of the all time greatest super Bowls ever.

Im only 38 but i feel like an 80 year old guy saying this... i think this is real football. The game played outside on real grass. WRs arent crying and tossing their hands up anytime a defender stops them from catching a pass. FBs and LBs crashing into each other over and over again. QBs hanging in the pocket waiting for someone to get open, not flailing around then flopping anytime their touched so they get a 15 yard penalty. And there's more excitement and drama in a game thats 24-17 than a game thats 41-36 like today. Bring back this brand of football.
Back when it was actually hard to be a Quarterback, and the NFL allowed teams to play defense.
Sadly that’s the direction the league is going
Big facts
So, it's easy to be an NFL QB now?
@@brucemorton7787 Not easy, but much much easier than it was 10+ years ago. NFL placed so many rules to ensure QB success to make more money and protect the most expensive player.
@@pacificwonderland6863 They placed these rules to protect the QB's from cheap shots. Who wants to watch backups and 3rd stringers? The rule that opened the offenses up was the stricter DPI rules that Bill Polian of the Colts campaigned for in 2004 or 2005.
Not only was Troy Brown was elected to the Patriots Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, but he still to this day holds the record for the highest ever percentage of votes
Drew Bledsoe is also in the PHOF and this game is a big reason why
He just retired and I feel compelled to go back and watch the first league title for him. What a career. On a sidenote, the old field looks amazing for the Steelers here. Those yellow end zones and natural grass field looks beautiful.

You mean besides the fact. he hit Brown on the big pass play that put them in scoring range "which injured him".. allowing Drew to get that lone TD on a short field..
Well he got hurt from a cheap shot low hit
Bledsoe was a game manager who was able to grind out a hard win againat the #1 defense on the road.
