      I moved a lot in the 2010s, and lived in places south of the border where I had to scrounge to find boxes. All my boxes from my last move, plus a bunch of new ones, are in storage out back. I'm never going through that again.

      @@LeaphYear fear Not !!! My sister's nephew used to work at a recycling place. He said, ultimately - they all end up at a dump to get burned. They just burn everything separately. We just sort everything out for them. 🙄 💗💗💗
      Also, kids love to play in big cardboard boxes, & even use them for sled riding. When I was little, we'd put them together to make dollhouses!!💗

    My wife came over while I was watching this. She made a deep sigh and just started rubbing my back in a soothing manner. When Kim asked what we (the viewer) are holding onto, I said “Um. Most of the basement?” My wife patted my shoulder and walked away.

    I grew up with "That's a good box." It pains me to let one go! And bows for wrapping gifts! They're expensive! A little tape and it will stick to that package for the 5 minutes it needs to!

      I have a green box full of them. I just don't know what else to do with them. Because I hate. Litter, I have them all wrapped up neatly, each in their own Ziploc bag. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    My husband and I were watching this a few hours ago, laughing so hard it was hard to breathe! Then he turned to me and said, "How do you feel seeing our lives parodied in a You Tube Video 🤣😳🤣 It took us moving across the country to finally get rid of a lot of our "just in case" stuff. Finding out that cross country movers charge by the pound got us tossing, selling, and donating things right and left!!!

We had old cell phones, old cameras, mystery cords and connectors for electronics we no longer had, various size boxes we kept in case we wanted to use them for gift boxes or junk drawer organizers, clothing that no longer fit but we kept for when we lost weight “someday,” gifts we didn’t like but kept for the next White Elephant gift exchange we went to (saved since before COVID hit), books we might reread someday, etc. etc. Those are just a few small example of the things that were taking up room that we would never EVER use but kept around because we thought we might MAYBE use.
      Now, the junk we kept that DID get used were the seemingly lifetime supply of air pockets, bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts and other packing materials that came with all our online orders over the years that we couldn’t recycle where we were but didn’t want to throw away into the landfill JUST in case we moved someday. Turns out we actually DID finally move, and they were used up in a flash!

      This is WAY too close to home! Before my one and only mortgage, I couldn't imagine this. Now we are a dumpster site. A landfill. Young folks, be aware! Every chance you get, rid yourself of things. Retailers, stop turning sane human beings into nuts. Bezos has created a whole industry called "self storage".

    Thank you two for always being wholesome. It's really cathartic to know other humans do ridiculous human things too. If everyone just tried a little bit harder to realize we're all broken and kinda silly, day to day life would be a little less filled with underlying smouldering pointless anger.

    Tape the allen wrench to an interior location on the piece of furniture it came with so if you need to do something to that piece of furniture later, like tighten up all the loose joints, it's available.

      @@heatherzwicker8031 🤨... Let's be honest, most items that need an Allen wrench aren't wood - some don't even have wood _veneer._ Just tape it - with painter's tape - to the part of item that is most obviously particle board or plastic and call it a day.

    I just cleaned out the top shelf of a closet in my office that had all these boxes of computer supplies (my husband builds pcs) since we got married 21 yrs ago. I decided to take ownership of that shelf cuz I needed it for everyday items that we use... like toilet paper, paper towels...etc. I took down all those boxes. EVERY SINGLE BOX WAS EMPTY INSIDE. We held onto EMPTY BOXES for 20 yrs!!!!! I was so pissed!

      Oh BTW the garage has tons of empty boxes that are about 10 yrs old. I have to break them down.... BIG BOXES for LARGE purchases. Good God. If I had a dollar for every cardboard box I break down I'd be wealthy.

      My husband did this with a chest of drawers for several years - and we sorely needed the space. I feel this.
      (We now only have open shelving or clear containers for stuff he uses.)

      I work in a store and when I'm putting the stock on the shelves, customers are sometimes eyeing the empty boxes on the cart and ask if they can take them home. I say I don't see why not, they're just getting tossed in recycling anyway.

      I remember when I was little A Good Box was a lot harder to come by. They didn't show up with your weekly Amazon purchase, you either bought them, or bought the thing in them. So of course you save the box, because Good Boxes Are Hard To Find. And they're not only good for shipping stuff or holding stuff, but also for crafting, playing with...so much you can do with A Good Box!
      ....which explains my excessive pile of Amazon boxes in the garage that I have neither space nor need for 😂

      Another good alternative is retailers in town who ship things. We have customers donate bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and bags (for in-store sales).

    I had to seriously downsize last year when i moved i to a studio apartment in a assisted living facility. I was a bit overwhelmed at first but then decided to do the Japanese sorting plan. Every item got 15 seconds. Did it spark joy? Yes. Keep. No? Can it be donated? Yes? Box. No? Trash/recycle. It was amazing! 50 years of stuff was downsized to 3 bins in 3 days! It was great!

    “You never know when you might need that,” was my dad’s philosophy when it came to saving wood scraps. I can’t imagine the melancholy he felt when he got rid of his collection of wood scraps when he and mom sold their house and almost all of their possessions to become full-time RV-ers.

    When my husband & I split after 27 years, he moved to another country so he took very little with him. I was left cleaning out almost 3 decades of a home that had also raised 3 kids so there was a lot! Def including tons of electronics, cables & cords - not knowing what any of it was for! I was constantly sending him photos asking "what is this? Do we need it? Should I keep it?" he was a good sport & honestly knew what almost everything was!
    My biggest concern at the time was trying to sell items & so I wanted to make sure I kept every cord just in case! Why do men buy so many electronics (which to me is anything metal, black & has an on switch) that never gets used or used once?!
    My shoes? Now I needed those silver patent leather heels for that one event 10 years ago, they'll be back in style, don't be silly.

      Not all men obviously, my dad's never even had a cell phone (even though he was an electrical engineer). As for the shoes, some really old-fashioned clothing is apparently back in style so you might be right.

    LMAO!😂 This is exactly me! I never throw anything out because, "what if?"😂 My stuff is taking over. And that's why we all have to save those boxes, to put all the stuff in, that we're afraid to throw out.😆 Also, boxes are a must to save for shipping gifts, because I'm too cheap and it makes no sense to buy empty boxes when I have these perfectly good boxes.😂 But you guys definitely need to save y'all's stuff, like Penn says, you never know when you're going to need it for a video.😊

      & keeping boxes for shipping, saves Trees !!! Where I live we have 3 garbage bins, & a recycle bin. But ppl who move here, leave boxes outside for maintenance to pick up. Wasted paper. But then again, so is all the junk mail I get every day !!! No shortage There !!!! 😂💗💗💗

We lived in a neighborhood in south Florida and we were one of the few folks that would put out the recycling bins for garbage pick up. And now we live in a rural mobile home park in north Florida. And we have the exact situation going on here that you have. We have two dumpsters and some people feel it takes too much effort to put the trash in the dumpster and they leave it on the ground.🙄 Some people are so inconsiderate, I can't believe it.😩 And I agree about the junk mail, too! Such a waste of paper.😥

    Thank you for the inspiration to take my last box of electronic to the hard to recycle place today! I have been decluttering for years and I constantly have a donate box. However I still have a few boxes of my cds from college that I just can’t seem to throw away or mail in to a place that buys old cds.

    I once had 15 pairs of jogging shoes that I had jogged in many countries with me. I was told my old shoes weren't worth a dime. I sold them all at once at a yard sale. $200. I still miss my favorite jogging shoes.

    Haha! I love to declutter. I bust out the trash bag and go through the house on the regular and my husband is the one to not want to part with anything. I throw a cord away, “what’s that go to??” WE DON’T KNOW, that’s why it doesn’t belong in this house 😅

    100% Accurate! 😂 My father never throws anything away. We have a box full of miscellaneous cables/chargers, my spouse has the old sneakers that became lawn shoes. I'm usually the one saying "You'll never know when we might need it". I also have old purses that I haven't used in years. I kept them just in case I wanted to go back to them.

    The box(es) are temporarily for the cats to guard and play within until you need them to organize the stuff you are saving into. My kitties say so.

    The cord saga, yes...and my husband is a tech savvy guy, so there is no throwing those away. The hoard of cords have come in handy! The portable speakers I have and didn't use because I lost the cord....it was in with the other cords.
    And in a good box too!

    I related to all of those items!! In addition, I think we have every instruction manual for every appliance or home goods item we purchased…ever! Just in case we want to troubleshoot why we got rid of it in the first place! 😂

      We had a lot of machine and computer instruction manuals. My husband said we can find all of the information online now. So true and we recycled so much paper because we can find it online.

    Great one! I tend to hold onto way too much “memories”-type stuff and am actually planning on letting a bunch of it go asap in order to keep our new home feeling spacious and uncluttered! 🤞🏼💪🏼
    It’s comforting to know that you guys have clutter, considering how nice your home looks in your videos!
    I listen to a bunch of decluttering-themes podcasts (a few of them also have ADHD) and maybe one of them would like to be a guest on your show!

    We’ve been married 43 years and have moved out of state twice. Every so often my husband comes up from the basement with some random thing. “I knew I’d need this! I’m so glad I didn’t throw it out!” And he uses it. Meanwhile, our basement is full of random things.

    LOL!! So many things! Packed a family member's home and found 9 phone handsets in the bottom of a file cabinet in the garage. They had been there for at least 8 years. Side note - REI will take old shoes that are not donate-able and recycle them somehow.

    Once a week, my wife goes through and has all of us our three kids and myself throw away some thing in the trash. It could be as small as a pin that doesn’t work that’s in their room or a drawer all the way up to a giant wooden desk that we no longer need. it honestly helps just something needs to go every week has been hanging around the house.

    True story, we started throwing away old cords for things we didn't have anymore. When not two months after we got an electronic shuffler for cards that used one of the cords we tossed out. Had to pay around $15 to replace it.

    For seven years I kept one turqoise sock, because it exactly matched a turquoise tee shirt I had, and I kept thinking its missing mate would turn up one day. Finally, after seven years, I realized that was ridiculous, and threw it away. Exactly ONE WEEK LATER, while cleaning out my linen storage, I found it smashed between a top sheet and a fitted sheet that I had used on my bunk bed one summer years earlier when I was working as a camp counselor.

    It is scary how much I relate to this. Basically everything you save we do as well. I think cardboard boxes and cords are our greatest weaknesses! Never know when you might need to mail something to someone...actually we do, one day a year, Christmas!🎅

      Yep ! Plus , I keep paper receipts belonging to things that say " Lifetime Guarantee " - just a few small boxes ( like for a faucet / doorknob set , etc. ) w/ an envelope of the receipts . I have stores very nicely honor the guarantees , free replacements , & even had sales people kindly remark on the good quality of the " aged " box itself ! 💲💲💲

    De cluttering is traumatic. We downsized from a 4100 sq ft house to a 1500 sq ft one and had to put 50 or so bags of trash to the street. My brain still hasn’t accepted it-I go on a scavenger hunt for stuff I need and then it hits me-“crap, I threw it out!”

    As people who just moved, I can totally relate to “what if we need that?” Every day I went to either Good Will or some other donation place to destash. Even now, as we unpack, I have various piles to donate to various organizations. The only thing I can do now is shake my head, then wonder where the heck I kept all the stuff! However, I’ve also become more organized. Everything has a place, including tagging cords before putting them away. Yup! I got rid of 20+ IKEA Allen wrenches, an old DVD player, an old VHS player!, and so much other technical stuff. I feel so much lighter! You know, as the saying goes, if you haven’t seen it, or looked at it, or used it… Time to let it go

    So, we have this traditional party in June. There is dancing, regional foods.. And kids are required to wear a shirt with horizontal and vertical lines, making like a bunch of squares ( plaid? ) I mentioned to my mom that I'll buy them for my kids. And she said I can have my brother's. From when he was 6. He's... 37, I think.

    My husband has a case of the "I might need this" while I have no issue decluttering the extra stuff. I recently threw out the majority of his yardwork/skateboarding/woods clothes because they made up 90% of his wardrobe because he kept ruining his good clothes and adding those to the pile. Now he thinks he has nothing to wear... haha.

    I feel so seen. And attacked.
    I have my work boots, my old work boots, just in case, and then an earlier pair of work boots, just in case I need to rake muck, or shovel manure (I don't live near a farm)
    AND OMG THE BOX THING!! YES!!! My parents even have a garbage bag full of packing materials from inside their boxes, which they also keep, JUST IN CASE they have to ship something themselves!!

    My superpower is throwing something away that I've held on to for years....then needing it the following week. Case in point, I inherited the job of family archivist when my Dad passed. I have boxes of vcr tapes. Dad was a spotty videographer....but some moments are totally worth it. The tapes are so old the labels faded or feel off...so needle in a haystack time. Services are expensive to convert to Dvds....Guess what I donated to Good will the week prior that would be helpful in figuring out what is worth sending to a converting service...? .

    😂 You should have asked me to bring some cords/cables over. I have a big plastic bin full of them. What if I were to ever get a landline phone again?!?! Oh, if you need a cardboard box, I have plenty for you too. My DVD player is hooked up to my TV, so you can't have that. I have a bag phone, if you need that. It's in great condition. Just needs a new battery (that you'll never find).

    I have multiple boxes of cables and chargers. XLR, Midi, Component, Composite, Instrument, Speaker, rca audio, tos link, firewire, printer, monitor, and specialized cables.
    Also, our dvd player broke recently (was a smart device we used mostly for streaming), but we have 100 dvds, so it was either get rid of all our dvds, or buy a new dvd player… so obviously we spent $150 and bought a new bluray player. 🤦‍♂️

I’m definitely guilty of keeping half of the items you listed.😂 My husband is holding on to at least four pairs of old shoes and a couple of them have the sole coming off. I have a drawer full of obituary programs from funerals. Am I the only person who does that?😂😂🤣

      I don’t hold obituary programs. I think those I throw out. I don’t go to a lot of funerals. I do have some programs from some events in college and some church events like Easter. I do justify that I want to keep it for a scrap book but I haven’t made it yet

    I have my bins of my skinny clothes. Drawers of bras and underwear gifted from my husband. Tons of dried out art supplies and crafting bits. A dedicated shelf in the fridge to condiment packets. In the freezer bags of stale bread. In the bathroom ..🙄😬 ehh .. Well that's some and of course everything that was listed in the video 😄

    I am currently holding onto 3 pairs of shoes that probably can’t be repaired and should be thrown out because they’re comfy and pretty and irreplaceable (the colorways are not produced anymore). I’ve thrown out so many other things. But not those. And I have issues decluttering my books and cosmetics too. Also craft supplies 😂 the ultimate “But I might need that some day!”

    At first, I was laughing along with the video, then I realized this isn't a joke for many people. I, too, hold on to items I no longer need out of fear that one day I will need them again. I've done a great job at decluttering over the last few years. Things that have sentimental value, but no practical purpose, are the hardest to let go.

    I am the cool Aunt who takes all the cables, labels them correctly, AND matches them to the proper device. - I aggressively organize those. and Yes, I HATE throwing away any of them, as invariably, one of the young kids shows up with an old LeapPad that needs the first generation micro connector. Or you go to a house, and there is no antenna, cable, or internet, so you are trying old school TV.

    People whose parents/grandparents lived through the depression and WW II. Never throw anything away, we might need it. We can use it for something else. Now we have the additional thought that we can donate it or sell it if we don't need it eventually. We don't do either of those things but we could if we needed to. 😎

As a baby boomer , 70+ yrs. old , many of us have had to go thru belongings of grandparents , parents , spouses & even friends ; we know the difficulties of doing this & have used this to reevaluate our own " collections " & start decluttering / discarding / selling / donating to help those who come after us . 🥰 Just sayin' ...

    Manuals - I have a manual drawer in the kitchen and every time we get something with a manual I put it there. If something goes wrong with anything I tell my husband to get the manual. He never does - he just looks it up online. BUT what if we lose the Internet and something happens? Well, then I have been preparing for that moment for 20 years!

    We keep a box of cords and cables that I have no idea what they go with. My husband keeps layers and layers of old shoes and jackets. I have a really difficult time with stuffed animals - I even have my sister's and all of our kid's stuffies too.
