    Thank you KTM Nordic for providing the test bike: / ktmnordic
    This was my fist time ever touching the 790 and from the short experience I had with it these are my thoughts. The bike feels very different from the big ADV bikes I have gotten used to before and I was a bit puzzled when I was riding on it. I didn't know how to feel about the small size and the bike felt more like a streetbike in initial impressions but I know that is NOT the case.
    This is just me getting used to a bike that maybe the first ADV bike really suited for my height of 174cm (5ft 8.5in).
    I am very keen on testing this thorolly as soon as possible and give you guys an episode 2 with the smaller KTM offering.
    I want to also compare this to the previous Adventure R model that KTM apparently doesn't offer anymore?
    I hope you enjoy the short little test I had with the bike anyway. I was not planning on posting this episode at all as I think I didn't portray my feeligs of the bike in the best way possible due to very short amount of time with it but then again I guess that's the whole point of the series :D

    Just purchased this bike, so far, I could not be happier with it. It’s not the 890 but is already more capable than I am. I go through a lot of bikes, and this has been one of my favorites thus far. I think this bike is a hit! Get on if you can. Cheers.

    Hmm very closely priced with Tuareg. Your thoughts compared to Tuareg since you tested both? I tested only Tuareg and loved it.

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Because both have some reputation issues with reliability I think it's more about the charecter of the bike that matters. 790 feels more like a street biased bike compared to the Tuareg but that's just my opinion from these short tests.
      Both can absolutely rip offroad too.
      First thing I would look at is the rider height. If you are above 180cm Tuareg is probably going to feel better right off the box but if you are under 175 this small KTM 790 is a very appealing option.
      I maybe slightly prefer the Tuareg engine compared to the KTM. Tuareg resembles the Tenere 700 more and that's a huge plus in my book.

    Actually seat height is 840-860 with factory seat. I find it a great bike, for me. Considered a lot of bikes including T7, it was just too high and top heavy. Even 790 weights more its easy to handle and gives confidence outside paved roads. That's my experience with it.

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  Před 7 měsíci

      Oh that's strange that I found a 10mm different number online. Oh well it's not a huge difference the bike is still very low compared to the direct rivals in this mid size segment.
      I think the riding feel of this was definitely wery light and nimble so I would absolutely want to have a full day's worth of riding with this one to really feel how is the comfort after long distances and how is it spending a bit more time on rougher terrain than I did on the video
      I've heard many people like you liking this bike! 😊

  • @defylifeadventure
    @defylifeadventure Před 7 měsíci

    The 790/890 range is the best there is in that segment. I keep looking around for something else, but everything else is either 10kg or more heavier and needs more added, has poor electronics (off road abs etc..), doesn't remember settings when turned off, or doesn't have traction control, or doesn't have the range/fuel economy. Tuareg and Desertx are the closest. Now if only KTM corporate treated customers better, and the bike didn't have buffeting.

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  Před 7 měsíci

      Would love to test the desertX at some point but it's not a light bike either. Tuareg is probably my favorite out of all the middleweights I have tested but that's just because I'm too short for the 890 R 😂

  • @robertstrom8810
    @robertstrom8810 Před 6 měsíci +1

    In a very short video you covered almost all I need to know. Coming from an electric Surron Ultra Bee it needs to be nimble and quiet. 😅👍 I test rode the 890 R and the 790 SMT and imagine this 790 adventure is somewhere between. The old one was ugly as hell and was a no go but this one looks quite good I think. Also have test ridden Transalp and the Tenere. Both nice bikes but the top heaviness of the Tenere would for sure put me in trouble for the kind of exploring riding I tend to end up with. That it is made in China doesn’t bother me. The quality can only be better (in sweden KTM stands for “push to goal“ for a reason…) Politically it is more disturbing to keep buying Chinese made products but we should not forget that Austria is one of the most Russia friendly countries among the western countries. Anyhow, I have ordered the 790 Adventure now untested. Looking forward to some Finish TET. 🤘😃🤘 Greetings a non NATO country 🇸🇪😅

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the comment. Very true that these geopolitical situations can affect buying decisions but thats something everyone needs to evaluate themselves.
      Considering how much of our daily lives already involve chinese products it is kinda funny to make decisions based on that alone. Even ”swiss made” watches have made in china parts.
      I think the 790 is an interesting bike as it is a very cabable roadbike and offroading it is pretty light on its feet compared to a lot of the competition. T7 is definitely a handful especially when it eventually is on its side 😅😅

  • @fun2rideadventure

    I got the 890 23, came from a T7, imo the 790 is the best bang for the buck in this category in the market, the clutch and the electronics are new from the previous 790, the only downside or not i can see for some people is this bike is assembled in China by CFMoto, not a problem to me. If you think on this bike don't forget to negociate the tech pack, you can try it for 1500 kms and after that will be disable. You comment that you don't feel the punch too much different from the T7, if you have tried the kick shifter i'm shure you have a different opinion.

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  Před 7 měsíci +2

      I found out later that KTM is putting a subscription paywall against some of the tech and that is a huge NO NO to me. I'm pretty comfortable in saying I'm never buying a bike where some functions need to be enabled with a monthly subscription.
      I don't care abot the money that much but in princible I don't want to vote with my money that it's ok to do so. Many car companies are doing the same and they will not get my money either.

      @@PatchedBandit you're wrong just one time payment, the tech pack, like before since the first 790, but now they give you a chance to try it all before you reach 1500kms, and then if you like it you can buy it, if don't you also have all the modes except rally.

      @PatchedBandit  Před 7 měsíci

      + Light
      + Nimble
      + Reliable
      + Fun to ride
      + Quiet! Very nice if you like a quiet bike.
      - Not hair risingly fast but it will get the job done
      - Sump oil changes require some more care to get right
      - Some spare parts are expensive (BMW!)
      - Heated grips button brakes yearly.. bad design (small fault but annoying)
      Very nice overall bike for general adventure moto stuff and even world tours. It's a very well respected motor that will run forever if kept well. Some BMW dealers can't seem to get the oil level correct so you need to be a bit careful with that. The Oil sump system is not as straight forward as traditional engines when you check the oil levels (READ the manual!)
      Overall the bike is very easy to work with. Plastics come off easy and access to parts is generally ok. I had very little problems with mine and I only swapped it to the Tenere 700 due to the entoxicating power difference. The 650 GS is not a 'drift with gas all day' machine. It's a slow'ish thumper that will do anything you ask it to but it's not going to do it in an especially 'exciting' way :)
      Depending on the ride it can easily be your only bike for years to come. But if you reguire some crazy speed maching it's not your best pick :)

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It's a definite decrease in power compared to the bigger 890 but can't really speak in any more detail about the power curves etc.
      Would need a longer ride to really compare the two. I would still think that 790 power is plenty for most riders though. Even though on paper the 790 has more HP than my Tenere it didn't feel any faster in the mid range. Maybe the peak hp is close to the redline and the power difference is not that huge in the mid range where we stay most of the time doing offroad riding.

      If you ride 2 up often I would steer you towards the bigger bike. I havent ridden either with anyone onboard but considering that the 790 feels a bit small in comparison I would also assume the ergonomics of the 890 are better suited for a passenger BUT as I said I have no experience in this so far so take everything I say with a 'grain of salt'.
      If you can try to take a test ride with both at least alone and with a passenger if possible.
      But in short I would think the bigger engine would be more pleasing with a lot of weight on top and the 890 does feel ergonomically more spacious so that is probably going to result in a more pleasing 2 up experience.

    1- absolute no no to the subscription bollocks KTM is putting on the consumer. Out of principle.
    2- Lack of dealerships
    3-lack of parts - huge waits
    4-poor dealership attitudes

      There's not subscription nonsense. Previously if you wanted the various packs you had to pay for them upfront before you even got to try them. Now at least you get to try time, before buying them outright. They could just include it all and raise the price of the bike €1,000 but then people would complain again. I wonder why you are not impressed by the punch of the engine. Did you go up into higher rev regions? You need to push beyond 6.500 rev's, then you experience a real boost. In the lower rev ranges the torque is fair but less sensational. This motor characteristic differs much from the one of the Teneré where torque is good at lower rev's but where the engine becomes breathless as soon, as you go beyond 5.500 rev's.
    Motor sound: Yes, a lawn mower, but only as long as the exhaust pipe is new. After some thousand km's it is changing, when some of the damping material has been blown out of it. Even with dB eater installed, the sound turns great, getting voluminous and more noisy, particularly with an Akra.
