  • 390 Adventure | 790 Adventure | When I posted my first content about my new to me 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R, Kyle Bradshaw sent me a message "You upgraded to a 790!"
For a rider like Kyle, that's the appropriate thing to say. He crushes terrain, and he does it at high speed, and with vigor! In the time between then and now, however, I find myself wondering, did I upgrade? Am I on a better bike for me? Have I lost anything?

Great comparative video. I really agree with you. Very few riders will use all the 790/890 have to offer but could really push the 390 to its limits and really enjoy it. I didn't miss or need cruise control out east with all the twisty roads but I will miss it out west with the long straight stretches of roads... Monument Valley roads... Great video.

Thanks for this - nice to know how the 390 compares. I have a 390 and larger adv bikes (F850GSA, 1290SAS) but the 390 has a special feel that makes riding it effortless. My 390 is my main commuting bike now, too, because it's so easy to deal with in stop-and-go. If you keep both, consider using your 390 for commuting - it works great.

Nice review! Reviewers often promote the idea that more HP, more suspension travel, and more electronics makes for a better MC, but as you point out that’s only true to the extent you’re able to use these features. I’m looking at the KTM 390 ADV and the 890 ADV standard, which makes this video especially relevant. Before watching I was probably 50:50 on these bikes, and after watching I’m more like 60:40 in favor of the 390. From reading comments on ADV pages on FB there seems to be a fair number of senior riders (65 yrs +) downsizing from 450+ lb , 80+ HP ADV bikes to the 390 and equivalent MC’s . If you have a video on modifications to your 390, I would greatly appreciate seeing it. Thanks!

Very good and informative video. I fell in love with my 390 in first minute I tried it maybe 20 days ago. Gentlemen that let me test it sold it to me, and now I am slowly watching what additional equipment to buy. Before that I wished for 790 but like you said I would never use that power and tech. Also riding height for me on 390 is addictive.

Good points. A few thoughts on the lower fuel tank. My reference points: I have the Norden Expedition and the Himalayan. I’ve owned a VStrom 1000 and ridden the KTM 790 adventure S, KLR, and Triumph Scrambler (and other ADV bikes). When I compare how other midsize ADV’s carry their weight, the Norden and KTM’s seem more balanced with the tanks down low. But you’re right. It’s still a lot of bike to manage.
Love the 390 platform so much. 😁😁

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding  Před 8 měsíci +3

Hello Mike, I think you hit the nail on the head. The lower tanks make the bikes more BALANCED than the others in its class. I should have used that word in the comparison! I keep seeing "It's so lite!" and I disagree, but as you said, its balanced. I think a better way to describe the 790/890/901 is "it's so well balanced."
If you had a VStrom 1000 (I did as well) boy do you know what top-heavy feels like! The only bike that felt more top heavy when full was my FJR 1300. - Frank

Your timing making this video is good for me, I've been seriously considering putting my 390 to stock and selling everything to get a 890 (similar weight/configuration). But, every time I analyze the pros/cons of the 390 vs the 890, the points you articulated keep me on my 390. Like your 390, mine is far from stock, and I'm VERY happy with it off-road, but on road it's fine, but cruise control is a big comfort item that I need to invest in because I refuse to use a mechanical grip clamp. There will be further platform refinements and upgrades for each new model year of "Adventure 390" to look forward too, I think unless KTM can make a 450/500cc Adventure Bike, I will likely end up with a 890 in a few years, if I can ever get as many miles in as you. Hi Frank,
How would a Versys 650 or Vstrom 650 compare to these bikes for sport touring putting down some highway miles and backroads. Would they be smoother and more stable on the highway? I have the Versys x300 and it great on back roads and has been a great first bike for me but past 80 it's slow climbing and has very high revving engine. I've put about 4000 miles on it and will looking to get a bigger bike for a more comfortable rider triangle and ability to put down some highway miles. I'd like a Versys 1000 but my friend said to work my way up.

Hope you don't mind me chiming in, but I happen to own a Versey 650 and a V Strom 1000xt. Adventure. For sport touring use, either 650 would be a great choice. The Versey, with its shorter wheelbase, fully adjustable suspension and 17" front wheel, will be the sportier of the two bikes. The V Strom is physically larger, has a longer wheelbase and 19" front wheel. It will be the better bike for touring, and is also capable of doing dirt and gravel roads. Reliability is great on both, but I would give the win to the Suzuki. I routinely see V Strom's on the forums with 100,000+ miles.
The KTM 790/890 are awesome high performance machines. The KTM 790 is capable of out performing my 1000. For everyday riding, both the Suzuki and Kawasaki are more practical and economical.

IMHO a VStrom is more well-rounded, and just fine to ride any distance on the highway. I rode my 1000 across the country, but other than a few passes on the highway, I never used the extra HP of the 1000, and a 650 would have been just as good. - Frank

Hello Dan, the 390 is just as tall as a KLR650, though it is a tighter fit, if that makes any sense. It's a fatser bike, which is nice, and close to 100# less weight. - Frank

  • @elpadrinoontwowheels8521

I love my 390 but the lack of power is killing me. I live in a city that almost everywhere you go you have to hit the highway and when the bike is struggling to keep up at traffic speed like 80 MPH and the vibration coming from the handle bar and your seat makes you feel like you are inside a heavy metal band speaker, it is not comfortable at all.

When is the comparison video of a 390 Adv and a KLR? (Similar price - who is each bike targeted to?)
Thank you for sharing the perspectives. I’ve had the opportunity to sit on a new 890 Adv and a 390 Adv next to each other. I have really wanted to buy a 390, but haven’t been able to get over how strange it feels. The 390 seems taller, wider, and has less ground clearance. In particular the seat was wide (seats can be changed) and was very uncomfortable. In contrast the 890 was very comfortable.
A problem I see with KTM is that there isn’t anything in between the two… the 390 MSRP is $7399 (US) and the 890 Adv is nearly double that.
    91km/hr awesome! 🤣
Nice video of Tennessee. You can easily see the differences from NY.

I have the KTM390 Adv and the Aprilia Taureg 660. For on road, the Taureg 660 is 10 times better in every way, power, comfort, brakes, suspension, steering, handling, etc....
For gravel roads, twin track ATV trails, again the Tuareg is 10 times better. The only place I find the 390 is better is slow tight technical single track or extreme rocky trails where dabbing a foot is necessary. I'm 5'7" with 30" inseam, so the factory height is a big issue. BUT, I just bought the 30mm lowering link (have not yet installed it) after seeing several videos of other vertically challenged riders who installed the link. If you are 5'10" or taller, the Taureg will be a welcome upgrade.

Hello, thanks for commenting. We all have different experiences, and all are valid.
An AT and a 1090, (I have ridden multiple AT and toe 1090) are IMHO different weight classes.
In it's weight class, the Tenere, even though lighter does feel heavier due to Yamaha's decision to place the fuel tank as high as the engineers could. 😏
That said, the 790 does not feel appreciably lighter than the Tuareg, which while it's got a low rank, is nowhere near as low as thw 790/890.
My comments are based on my reading so many owner comments about how amazingly light the bike feels. I feel that's not the case. It feels second best in it's class, but IMHO does not feel light. It's well balanced with the fuel low, but it's not like you do not know you are pushing close to 500#. - Frank

    Just add one Critical Perspective.
    LONG DISTANCE COMFORT.
To be honest, I can’t personally understand why people caring Cruise Control so much... but anyway. (maybe American thing with long straight road with less people? I’m in SoCal so,,,😅)
In reality, this factor pretty much explains why GS 1250 is still the best seller for margin to others, and the KTM690 enduro seems almost a unicorn, but no one buys it. (I had one 😂)
390’s weakest point is inherent. Going at 65mph on 400cc / 700cc / 1290cc is a very different story. That’s why Honda has a Goldwing when they have the world’s best mid-size engine. (Watch the Dakar this year?) And It’s also why Honda doesn't try to make smaller ADV bikes than Transalp.
