Hello my friends. Janis was from Port Arthur, Texas. As you guys said, she wasn't just singing she was preaching in the gospel style. Not just gritty and soulful, but you could also feel her raw emotion and pain. She always gave her performances everything she had. Thanks for reacting to this. Peace.

You so right. She was a Texan through and through. She adored blues, hillbilly and rock. Bessie Smith was her idol and she paid half of Bessie's tombstone in 1970.
You still have to listen to her sing Summertime live. It will change your life.

I remember watching this performance. I was at the house of a friend, my senior year in high school. My friend's mom said, "Oh, that's not singing. It's just noise." Friend and I stared at her and he said, "This is beautiful. Incredible. It's more than singing."
Whew. This still gives me the sweats, 53+ years later.

One in a trillion. No one had more grit, rasp, cracks,emotion than her. The Queen of Rock/Blues. When she was a teenager in EastTexas, she would sneak with friends to Louisiana to Black clubs to hear Blues. Like Elvis, she was called a N*##er lover, cause she supported all people of all races. Her inspiration was Bessie Smith, Black Blues singer. When she heard Bessie didn't have a head stone on her grave, she paid for one. Died in 1970 overdose, 17 days after Jimi Hendrix died. RIP Miss Janis. You are severely missed. God Bless Texas for your gift to us.
I too was a teenager when Janis was @ her prime. Cry Baby, take anothe piece of my heart, & Maybe songs became my favorites to this day! What an icon, a legend! God love you Janis & you are in His arms today!!! ❤
I actually got to see her in concert shortly before she died. It was phenomenal!! Please listen to "Work Me, Lord". It will rip your heart out!

Ms. Joplin hailed from Port Arthur, Texas, right near that Louisiana border with Lake Charles. She got her music education in all those backwater roadhouses of the Gulf coast. Although she fled to the West Coast to chase her dreams, the Texas twang never left her.
GOD blessed her soul and she sang the heck out of it. RIP JANIS

I graduated in 1969, so I experienced Janis Joplin, a.k.a. "Pearl" as a teenager. She really shook our music culture up! From the Beatles to the 4 Tops, the Temptations & Smokey Robinson (Soul music), the Lettermen & the Association (soft harmony) . . . Joplin & Hendrix were like soaring comets 💫 blasting past our generation, self destructing until they both disintegrated at age 27. Such a pity.🥀

She's been my favorite since 1970 at 11 years old. She would love your reaction I'm sure. She could very easily control her voice, and hit notes that most of these auto tuners today wish they could. Shes from Port Arthur, Texas. Her early influences were Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, Aretha, Otis Redding. I still have all my albums, and books on her from early 70,s. Great, great reaction!!

As you're learning, Janis was an amazing preformer. When she was attending the University of Texas, she was voted "Ugliest Man on Campus" by frat boys. The joke was on them. Really enjoyed your great reaction. Keep it going.
Really? In the movie that mimicked her life she buys a car and smashes it to pieces on the lot. She had some pent up anger and yet she was and still is so lovable. I hope those frat boys got the karma they deserved.
Janis' voice was polyphonic, meaning she sang at least two notes simultaneously. Janis didn't need fancy sets with special effects, back up choreographed dancers, and multiple designer costume changes in order to captivate her audience. She talent was raw, a one of a kind artist, and the UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF ROCK. I discovered her when I was 8 years old and we lost her when I was 11 years old. It was too soon. I never stopped loving her music.

She was a member of the infamous "27 club" along with fellow 60s stars, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison of The Doors. All three died of drug/alcohol related overdoses at age 27 in the same era. It is so strange. Thank God for audio and video of these great and historic talents.
It is odd but I sometime think God gets greedy and wanted them all, not just one, but all of them as was done with Freddie and David.

“ Raise Your Hand” with Tom Jones live is a hot funky delight that will take you to church!!!!! I was so lucky to see her live twice- including at the Monterey Pop Festival.
Port Arthur, Texas- she drew from the soul greats! Nina, Tina, Otis, Aretha and Bessie Smith.
She took off for San Francisco in the 60’s. She was brutally mocked in her home town because she didn’t wear makeup or pander to the “ go go girl” look.

She was better than the make up wearing divas of any generation with her raw talent. She didn’t need to hide behind a mask as they did and still do. She gave it live with no sound effects to make it other than what it was, nor did she need dancers and acrobats behind her distracting from the best female performance of all time. I was a generation behind but I caught up to her, much later but not to late

Guys, just listen to me. Anything Janis sings is from her heart and soul. I run out of superlatives in describing the way she affects everyone every time you hear sing. Her performance of "Ball And Chain", will verify what I said.
I was born too late. Janis was gone before I could appreciate her talent. That being said, after I heard her for the first time, I went and bought a CD of her greatest hits. She was pure raw emotion amped up 1000x. She was gone too soon. I am grateful to at least have had the privilege at least hear her voice.

The best performance by Janis of 'Maybe' is live in Germany. Try 'Work Me Lord' in Stockholm, also live and also stupendous .

It’s interesting that you mention where she would have gone if she hadn’t died so young. The fact that she could sing harmony with herself is one indication of what we could’ve experienced. She had a lot of tricks in her pocket, but unfortunately we never got to hear them.

She was from Port Arthur Texas part of the Golden Triangle..........Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange.............some incredible talent came from here.......Edgar and Johnny Winter (Beaumont) to name one......one of Janis Joplin's classmates at Port Arthur Jefferson High was a guy named Jimmie Johnson (Miami, Dallas Cowboys coach).......he would play college ball at Arkansas with one Jerry Jones and win the NAt'l Title in 1964

Try "Me and Bobby McGee". Released just after her death, it is easily her biggest hit. It's not one of these live barn-burners- it has a more conventional country vibe.
She was just finding the right line up, the best band for her and the best groove for her art.

This song was originally done by The Chantels in 1957 :) You guys have reacted to another song by Janis called "Ball and Chain" which was originally written by Big Mama Thornton in 1959 :) Believe it or not, another famous song called "Summertime" performed by Janis, was originally written by George Gershwin in the early 30s and was performed by multiple artists including Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Janis Joplin is one of a kind and she has said herself that she surrounded herself w/ blues artists growing up. While the other kids in her class were listening to the rock n' roll of the 50s and 60s, she was listening to some of the greats like Bessie Smith and Odetta. Her influences were almost all black, female blues artists :) You guys should check out some stuff by these artists who influenced her, because they are all amazing in their own right!

Janice was from Lubbock Texas and she had no training but she used to listen to Betsy Smith. I think her name was Etta James who is one of my favorite singers in the whole world. I have every record of Janice and Etta James you are to get into her there’s nobody like her, I’m 78 years old now I can still remember going to Woodstock and seeing Janice for the first time with Jimi Hendrix in the rest of the Clearwater CCR all of them while I only lasted one day there early day and a half during the rain, but I will tell you this that girl was beautiful Your voice was just absolutely beautiful and she does have the same but Etta James has the same kind of soul deep down soul I’m a white girl and I can vouch for that. OK that’s that’s what I learned about soul and I was probably 15 maybe 1415 at the time now. You also asked about church yes I think shit that I know everything in the church I don’t know about Janice I think she did but I’m not sure she went to meet from home. They both had the same problem a heroin attic Other lives, Janice died at 27 just like Jimi Hendrix and the rest of them my name is Liz the queen very enjoyed and I’m glad that you really recognized what a great voice she was go for it try Etta James two I’d rather go blind.
