ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Barrington Hendrick, known artistically as JPEGMAFIA, is an American rapper and producer from Baltimore, Maryland. Hendrick's work is highly unusual and experimental in nature, blending and blurring genre, extensive sampling and digital distortion into a critically-acclaimed body of work which ranges from a cover of "Call Me Maybe" to the "Darkskin Manson" tape which was inspired by the Freddie Gray protests in his hometown, Baltimore. He has received rave reviews from critics, including a 5-star review from the NME among others.
ABOUT THE CAMBRIDGE UNION: From its small beginnings as a debating society, the Cambridge Union is the oldest debating society in the world and the largest student society in Cambridge. The Union remains a unique forum for the free exchange of ideas and the art of public debate.
wasn't expecting this collab
"Im kinda drunk and I'm pretending not to be" - Peggy
I felt that
he's honest as hell, it's refreshing
They're in the UK so everyone is drunk in all actuality
Peggy showing up drunk to a cambridge interview is killing me
How’s this guy gonna turn up as a traffic controller, should’ve came to my sixth form
scott rudd lol that jacket is probably like 200 dollars
@@arnav6808 more imo
@@arnav6808 more than that
Yo. This interview hits so hard. I just got out the military and they do try to scare you into staying in, but man I want more from life. I want my freedom. Respect man
What branch?
@RICKY Active Duty Air Force (3D1X2), you can feel the desperation of retention in the air.
same, the only good thing that came out of the military for me was getting to go to school for music on their dime
o and Air Force 2T151
Same dude, in the army reserves, but still cant wait to get out. 3 years left.
Was the interviewer the one that made this interview happen? He's a REAL ONE, if he did.
sam hes probably in the committee which gets to decide who they get, which is a student body. So students get to decide who they invite
i'm getting the vibe that it seems like it hahahahaha what a legend
He said he attended a show so he was at the very least on board
He literally says so in the first 30 seconds
he must be a fan
This interviewer was a little stuttery during his introduction for Peggy but damn he honestly killed that. Super good moderator throughout. Really interesting questions and conversation I thought.
The interviewer look scared of peggy lol good interview tho
peggy will talk the same if he ever gets to get interviewed at the white house or some shit.. love how this guy's so classless and classy all at the same time
@Jack D'Ripa maybe you should go out less
Jack D'Ripa what’s wrong with u bro
its great man im just getting into him and i just feel like i relate
agree if "classless" and "classy" refer to different meanings of "class"
So cute when he calls him peggy haha
I love how much he’s involving the audience in the interview. The way he keeps looking and talking directly to everyone says a lot about Peggy as a person. One of the best artists out right now, IMO. He’s gonna influence A LOT of upcoming acts.
I can’t wait for jpegmafia type beat to become the default sound
same bro
Jackson Fell 😂😂😂
It's getting there thank God
Peggy's sound is unpredictable, he productions are completely out of the box. So you can't really make a generalized sample from his discography.
"WE'RE GETTIN STRONGER--"
love u peggy
BREADSWORD Peggy is the man
my favorite creator loves my favorite artist? valid
I lived in Baltimore for one brief year in 2017 and caught Peggy live with maybe 20 ppl at the Crown before Veteran got released without knowing who he was or anything. That's maybe the only time I've ever heard completely new music live and instantly got hooked. there was maybe one other white dude there and JPEG said something joking like: "Idk how these white ppl got in here". It's crazy seeing him go from playing tracks live from his phone to speaking at Cambridge. The music speaks for itself.
“this is so fucking formal” literally read my mind
This is his best interview yet
This is almost as surreal as would a Call me Maybe remix including Carly Rae Jepsen w Pegleg
wouldn't that be strange?
this is crazy
6:53 you don't have to tell people your dreams
7:20 define your goals
11:00 necessity drives innovation
Cheers m8
i feel blessed that i got to see this rise in my lifetime
Peggy's insanely well spoken and talks like he knows exactly what he's about, and as someone who has been listening since Veteran I'm not one bit surprised. Massive props for this interview.
Macros20 been listening since veteran BTW
Ye those sergeant niggas recruited me for my insane vernacular nigga.
You say "someone who's been listening since Veteran" as if everyone didn't listen to Veteran when it dropped
why they got a construction worker talking about music?
Damn bro, you don't know about village People?
Cause only a construction worker can truly teach you how to build a career 👷♂️

He speaks with such conviction, like he's always known what artistic statement he wants to make from the very beginning. Seriously one of the most talented guys in hip hop right now, a true ONE MAN SHOW. The fact that he taught himself everything from producing to mixing and mastering is seriously incredible, I don't think a lot of people understand how difficult it is to put all of those tasks on yourself. His work ethic is inspiring.
Taught his self like with no books or info from the internet?
You can’t teach yourself how to ‘mix and master’. Not professionally. U can learn off CZcams but it won’t sound as good as the pros. No doubt Peggy had some help
he has his friends in the baltimore scene
Most of my favorite music today I didn’t like at first, that’s why it sticks
Wet Nips and it’s special because it means that you spend that extra time understanding it instead of just disregarding it because you didn’t like it first
So true
Same aha funny how life works
peggy the scholar lmao
This is very unexpected woah
This may have been my favorite interview of all time. He’s one of those artists that has music so personal yet so guarded in layers of irony and artistic choice. You feel like you know him, yet you know nothing about him specifically. This was a great way to fill in the blank
Stephen Bryson you think you know me
>you think you know me
i like how he explains old technology without being patronising to the kids or talking down on them for not being aware
Peggy looking like an African substitute teacher in the thumbnail
Picard Young 😂
😂😂
This actually legendary, a major moment in music history
Yoooooooo roachdog jr
jpegmafia has a masters degree in journalism lmao
Damn. More surprising than 2pac doing ballet
ozzietheassassin he don’t anymore
@@yyyyyyyay pretty sure u can't lose a master's once u have one
@@yyyyyyyay how u mean? Since when is it possible to take someones degree away lol, did he commit fraud or something
Alex Yoon what do you mean by that
Man I love Peggy. Such a dedicated musician and interesting guy. Seeing him live in Manchester with my friends was one of the best nights of my life. Can't wait to see what stuff he'll release in the future.
Peggy has the most inspirational work ethic
i fucking love this interview. Peggy doesnt tone down any aspect of his personality and he's not trying to fit into a setting that typically dismisses black cultural expression as "urban" or "low brow" or somehow less valid. i fucking love dis guy.
What a great interview! I've never seen Jpeg open up this much, and to this extent. I loved it! Very well done
Needed this
"I have to take control of [my music] out of necessity, because when my shit is left in other people's hands, they fuck it up every time."
Shotout the interviewer, he was really spot on
Rollin' up like he just finished his shift at his dad's contracting business lol, lovin it
One of the best interviews I’ve ever watched. Certainly the best interview Of Peggy. A true fan, asking great questions. Thank you!
Listening to him at 30:33 after having listened to LP! so much since it dropped is just crazy. He really made it happen
Peggys gonna sample that water being poured at 2:29 and make a song
unreal interview
Peggy, I’ve been listening since veteran and it was such a breathe of fresh air, everyone who I told about it FELL IN LOVE. Just want to let you know that veteran was an amazing album since day one.
I’m glad you got that validation Peggy that probably feels so good !
I sometimes wake up, see shit like this, and wonder if i really woke up in the same dimension.
i have had a very negative evening, but, this brought my spirits up
Excellent interview. Thanks!
so blunt yet charming to a surprisingly attentive crowd
he walkin in Cambridge dressed as a trash as a dustman LOL
Love this interview
Bruh doesn’t make beats he makes music
thank you Cambridge, very cool!
Give my man a scholarship
Peggy you deserve this recognition we love u
its JPEGMAFIA, all caps no space
MFDOOM?
I just randomly clicked on one of his videos because I saw his name many times. So, happy I did. I love Industrial music and soundscapes and he does amazing stuff. He's very articulate. as well. He just mentioned The Cure, and I love him for it.
Very recently started listening to Peggy and he’s easily one of my favorites right now. He’s real, authentic and most importantly, not trying to be anything or anyone but himself.
lmao i recently discovered jpegmafia music through flume and been listening 247 nonstop. i could not believe my eyes when i found out about this video because this is some weird ass collaboration
take a shot every time he says i forgot the questions
They've really helped give a voice to some of the most interesting music and artists that have come out in the last few years, like when they had Yung Lean
Just heard him talk about the chants at shows and Morrissey, and man the best thing was seeing him perfom in Manchester the home of Morrissey and discuss at the show such a Legend love Jpeg FR
Congrats @Cambridge Union for having Jpegmafia
Dope as hell
so uncompromising. never change, peggy♥️
such an incredible interview. a bit visceral but it shows peggy in a really great and true way. inspirational stuff
been throwing snaps this whole video. bravo, peggy
Good questions from the interviewer :)
i'm so proud of peggy *wipes tears*
Haha this is crazy. Cambridge of all places. Great interview by the way
Peggy is on point about telling the people you’re around at the moment about your creative aspirations. Just ain’t worth the effort explaining to simple ass people your love for making art. But I do construction, being in the military sounds worse.
I'm still rewiring my brain to stop freezing when it comes to life decision. I might need to listen to this interview every night just so it sticks into my subconscious.
This is dope
Dope interview. Stay up Peggy. 🤘🏾
I love this mans mentality so much
The most unexpected crossover
He so out of place 😂 but i love it
Peggy is a free soul, i love him and his music so much
posted on my bday, keep going king
What an interesting video
What’s crazy to me is that you can take a bit of wisdom from almost every answer Peggy gave
"I've gotten drunk and i'm pretending not to be" lmao
More of these. Please.
Damn they got a JPEGMAFIA feature?! This is hype bruh
Inspiring, great vision peggy, much love🌸🌟 Great Interview
y'all i think peggy should get into making music, i think he'd be good at it
I love this man.
I definitely made the mistake of telling family members my dreams lol
Never thought I’d hear the phrase “basic bumpkin ass mothafuckas” at a Cambridge talk but I’m here for it.
Props to the interviewer, dude had great questions.
his first music record was Hanson? As in MMMMBop Hanson? lmao peggy u do u bro i love it
truly an icon
Literally I'm in the guard and 1 billion understood everything what peggy said about being in the military
"Lyrically dire" is hardest rap diss ever.
Loved peggys reaction when the interviewer mentioned melonman
Unexpected but so awesome.
This guy is a champion!
Very nice Peggy!
i want to do this cambridge interview in a few years
You can do it homie
see u there my g
U got it
We love you Peggy😆
Waiting on a JPEGMAFIA x Madlib collabo
