Great tips. Don't forget #11 Tayson. Do Not put a screaming hot cooking pot on your bag it will melt...lol sorry had to be that guy..lol 👍I felt your pain when that happened. Be safe out there ✌️
Great tips Tayson. Especially the one about waking your down. I thought washing it would destroy the loft but getting the sweat, oil and dirt out makes complete sense.
Thanks
Nate
I was initially thinking this was going to be a video of obvious things I already knew, but I learned some new things and was reminded of some others that I was grateful for! Great list video and also good to see the somewhat underrepresented sleeping bags you guys make (quilts get all the glory these days) because I recently bought that exact bag and I love it! Thanks!!
I store my down bags with a few desiccant packets, hopefully to help reduce moisture. Cool video, thanks for the tips!
Thank you sir!!
Thanks for the tips. I have your new 0° bag and I'm very happy with it!
Thanks for watching! Glad you're enjoying your sleeping bag!
I have the -15 and ILOVE IT ..........................
Put zipper guard 'tape' under the zippers please. It's probably a heat-bonded material- it stiffens the fabric under the zipper so the zipper doesn't catch. Think iron on clear tenacious tape. It is sooo worth the weight to not have the fabric catch in the zipper, especially if you have to get out of the bag fast for some reason. It would save YOU and your customers the headaches, and since it's a fraction of an ounce, it's not going to affect the final number. I know for sure that the 2023 women's nemo disco 15 has it. They probably all do, but that's the one I know for sure does.
I love your beard & appreciate having a knowledgeable pocket gnome for backpacking facts. 😊 🏕 😁
I am in the same boat.. super scared to wash it. I sleep in a liner in my bag in hopes to help keep my body oils off of my bag. However, I have had my bag a few years...only camping 2 to 3 times a year (I'm a mom with small kids and 1 sitter...can't "abuse" her services...lol) so my bag shouldn't be too dirty, but I think it's due for some love. I will wash it when ur "how to wash ur down bag" video comes out. I know there are many videos out there, but I trust u all completely, so I will wait for ur video. Ty for doing these videos!
Stay tuned! We'll hope to have a good video for you soon! Make sure you're subscribed to our channel so you don't miss the notification when it comes out.
Thanks dude
Any time
Have y’all thought of making a quilt that a air pad fits in a sleeve that makes it light yet is warm and has no drafts!
We have thought of it! So far, the weight of adding the extra sleeve like that is not worth the tradeoff, especially since there are so many different pads out there and it would be difficult to cater to them all.
Thanks for the tips! I stored my uncompressed down sleeping bag in my car for about a week. Is it ruined? Is there a way to get the warmth back?
Tayson We have 3 1st gen Aerie 20° quilt in our house and love them thinking about getting 0° deg quilt from outdoor Vitals. Good info take care of your gear it will last. Stay safe
Thanks for your support!
People told me it was a bad idea to get a outdoor Vitals quilt but I did it anyways best peace of gear
I just use a damp sponge for washing my down bag. Fleece liner a must.
Hey Tayson! Speaking of bags do you by any chance sell older bags such as the lime green one that MR Dan Becker used in one of your videos? If so i would totally buy a few off you cause the colors are awesome!
@Outdoor Vitals QUESTION: When washing my down bag, in a front loader, is it good to use a high speed setting afterward to spin off more water before drying? I will have top loaders that spin very fast and squeeze hard against the sides, even though I'd never wash in one. My thoughts is that it would take and hour off the beating it would get in the tumble dryer.
I had a down bag that I slepted over 500 nights in over the course of 10 years. I always treated it as good as possible (I also used a liner 99% of the time, that I washed regularly). After 10+ years the bag was still as good as new. So I don't think it is necessary to wash a down bag very often when you treat it right and use a liner.
What kind of liner did you use? Was it breathable? Thanks.
Jimmy , fleece liners are best.@@JimmyDevere
What do you do when your down starts escaping your sleeping bag. I have mornings where my tent looks like a snow globe. What do I do to fix it
Do you have any references for the idea that down takes as long to decompress as it was stored compressed for? I've never heard that before and can't find another mention of it. I'm assuming the rate of decompression wouldn't be linear so is there a threshold level of decompression that would be the 'functional' loft of the bag after compression for say, 10 hours?
Great video, great tips.
I look after my down bag and store it in a huge bag that came with it when I'm not using it but I get a lot of feathers leaking out of it, is there some way to stop this or is it normal for down bags to shed feathers?
It is normal for a down sleeping bag to have a small level of down coming out of the bag. This can be decreased by compressing the sleeping bag slowly when putting it away to avoid air opening holes in the seams that are large enough for the down and feathers to escape from. One thing that could be a help in avoiding this is using a Nikwax Down Proof wash. This would actually coat your own bag in a hydrophobic coating causing it to become what is now known as "dridown". Besides this extra benefit, the coating may help your bag maintain more of its down causing less leakage.
Thanks for the advice, it's most appreciated 👍
Hey like the video, i have a down 800 + and want to know what is the longest you would have it in a compression sack , if i pack it the day before than spend 2 day traveling on plane then spend a day in the hotel than start the hike it can be 4 /5 days is that to long or what do you do when your in this spot ? thanks
Your bag will be fine if you compress it for a week or so. We would just recommend giving it some time to decompress before sleeping in it at night.
video on how to wash, PLEASE!
Make sure you're subscribed, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised VERY soon!
Are you considering using the same non-stitched baffling technology you employed in your NovaPro jacket for your sleeping bags and quilts?
Came for the sleeping bag tips but fuck that how do you grow a belter of a beard 😂
I just bought your 0° bag. I would like to store it hanging up I’ve heard you talk about it. What is the proper way to hang it so you don’t damage it? Could you show this in a video I imagine there are many people that would like to know.
There are 2 hanging loops on the bottom of the footbox. One easy method is to use a regular hanger with these loops and just hang it upside down!
how often and when is a good time to wash?

Do kids count as animals? :)
I have a danish made down sleeping bag that I payed 700 dollars for. My man I'm carrying that bag with cotton gloves!
How should one Dry a down bag after washing? Just hang it?
That is our recommended method, yes. After it's completely dry you can put it in the dryer NO HEAT with a few tennis balls to help it loft up and move any clumps of down that may have formed.
@@TaysonWhittaker thanks a lot for the advice, much appreciated!
Pet tip is one I’ve made a huge mistake with. My dog, Aussie Shepherd is my backpacking companion. She’s destroyed my first bag, and I quickly learned her nails aren’t great for the outer material. She loved it too, and now it’s hers with duct tape patches. Lol.
my bag smells like my sack after a week long backpacking trip
Nothing about drying?
Make sure you're subscribed! We hope to be able to give you more info about that soon!
#12 - No Sex in your bag. We're stinky backpackers so it's not an issue.
Just keep it the bivvy and roll it.
Lol don’t bring pets
