Honestly, I feel like watching this in sub really affects y'all's understanding of the story. Yes, JP VA is amazing but if you find it hard to follow stuff, maybe try EN dub instead? Because you guys only watch it once and once you miss an important info, it will affect your understanding of future scenes. Info and hints will be dropped a ton in the following episodes and it will help a lot if you can easily follow it by hearing English instead of trying to read sub and react at the same time.
After AoT I hope you guys react to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood aka the GOAT anime (imo). It has a great EN dub and has a similar intriguing storyline that answers all its questions by the ending satisfyingly. It isn't that long (I think only 3 seasons iirc) I hope you guys check it out 🙏
the cutscenes Mason's talking about is the end of each manga comic chapters... so in a sense, 2 manga chapters consists of 1 episode...first 10 mins and second 10 mins...

I see a lot of jokes about the animators getting depressed once a Levi scene comes up but the opposite was actually the case. Arifumi Imai (the animator who was responsible for this scene as well) actually felt really unmotivated after season 2 and read the manga to get new inspiration. When he saw Levi‘s epic fight scenes, he actually called dibs on them and asked Wit Studio if he could start working on season 3 before the rest of the team. The remaining action animators „complained“ that Imai really took all the good bits for himself. So in reality the action animators were most excited to work on these scenes. It was actually a thing during season 1 and 2 that the animators constantly tried to one up each other which contributed to the high quality of the action sequences
And then season 4 coming in. And it's uhh... 😢

I love how well executed this scene was. Levi is usually calm and composed, but when he saw Kenny he lost composure, showing there was a personal connection between them. Kenny's introduction was so badass

I think it's also shown in the OVA. Hange struggled reading Ilse's name, but Levi recognized her name right away, even when Ilse is a regular scout member

Levi vs Kenny is probably the best animated sequence of any anime. MASSIVE props to the artists who worked their butts off.

Ilse did write the name Ymir in the notebook. If you watch the episode in season 2 where Hange heard Ymir's name for the first time, she was shocked for a brief moment. Also, Ilse's notebook should be watched BEFORE season 2. As another commenter mentioned, the reveal of the name of the character Ymir was meant to be shock factor even for us. And the human form of the titan was seen in Ymir's backstory as a member of the religious group

Just gonna pipe in here about Ilse's Notebook and watch order: Most people suggest watching it after episode 1 of season 2. It seems you missed a bunch because you waited, so here's what you missed (this isn't spoilers at this point). Early in Season 2, when everyone was talking about Christa, and the cadets mention she hangs around Ymir, Hange clearly recognizes the name. When they show Ymir's backstory about her being taken as a child and set up in some sort of cult. The blond woman in the cult that was always prevalently being shown is the titan that Ilse runs into. Ilse and Ymir look very similar, this is why the titan mistook Ilse for Ymir.

So about the timeline. Mike is alive, he died at beginning of season 2, Levi squad is alive, they died at the end of season 1. The Levi squad died in the 57th expedition beyond the walls. Ilse Langnar died in 34th expedition beyond the walls. It is mentioned by Hange, that 34th expedition was about a year before the events of this episode. I think it is safe to assume the events in this episode are taking place at the same time Eren and others are still in the training corps.
But they know Crista's real name is Historia by this point.

i love the "not a single life was lost" line at the end. its so triumphant. a silly girl like hange contributing so much to humanity not only because shes gifted with immense human curiousity, but also was inspired by the immense human will that she witnessed from Ilse. its just goosebumps all over

What made Ilse's Notebook so peculiar was back when it was released, S2 hadn't come out. It was the first time we heard a titan could talk, let alone bow to a human. And the name Ymir made us think what its connection be to the Ymir we knew who, back then, hadn't revealed that she was a titan. Wish you could've watched this OVA before S2, but oh well. Glad you got excited for the first opening cause that's my fav, too! XD

The reveal of Ymir's (the one in the scout regiment) name is "so what" but if you see this first it's "Holy crap - why is she named Ymir".
You might recognize that titan as one of Ymir's cult members. The one who shook her head during the police raid.
The titan started gouging its face right after ilse told it to die.
BTW, this OVA is the only one based on the manga. It's a chapter to itself.

You saw that in 1x24. they used it on Annie but she was bigger and stronger than the titans shown her and broke out.
They call it episode 3.5 because, chronologically, it takes place between ep 3 and 4. When you see the captured Titans at the end, that was from the cleanup in Trost after Eren blocked the entrance with the boulder. But it makes no sense to watch it in that order.
It's funny how many of the questions you ask in the post-episode discussions can be answered with "Yes... but also no."

Imo the titan talking ruins the reveal of the beast titan being able to speak. It also makes you suspicious of Ymir early on, when there isn't a reason for our main characters to distrust her. So yeah, I prefer watching the OVAs after the main story has passed the point where anything could be spoiled.
Honestly, the discussion after 3x1 was one of the best one guys. It was fun listening to how close yet how far yall are with ur theories.

Attack on Titan: We spent the budget for our season in a five minute Levi vs Kenny's scene.
It really is true. Anime and Manga demolishes US comics and television. Attack on Titan was just so densely packed and engaging - every episode feels like a book chapter's worth of information and you have to pay attention.
Eek...yes you did spoil yourselves with knowing Kenny's last name at this point (also from that Levi funk pop). That said, I think Isayama chose the name Ackerman because they are "devils." Akuma = Ackerman? Everytime someone in the show says akuma I always think they're saying "Ackermann"
RIP Hange squad: Nifa, Abel, Keiji. You've been with us since Stohess in season 1. We now only have Hange and Moblito.
This opening is one of my favorites. Red Swan is one of my favorite songs. I love the vocals, the piano, the drums - everything.
Fun fact, Abel was also present in the Female Titan arc, specifically you can see him as part of the group who were ordered by Erwin to defend the female titan after she called the titans.
on the YMIR OVA timing thing, if you watch this before season 2, you do notice Hange's reactions to hearing Ymirs name in season 2.
This OVA was released between season 1 and 2, and in my opinion it was supposed to be episode 0.5 of season 2.
This was released around same time with lost girls 1 and 2.
I'd have hoped for lost girls after season 1 but seems like it'll be skipped, but it'll be nice right before season 4 as well

25:34 If i recall correctly, it wasn't clearly explained in the anime, but in the manga the experiment was to see the titan intelligence, if Eren was able to write in titan form and endurance, Eren transformed 3 times with only 30 minutes of rest and each time his titan form was smaller and weaker.
I was disappointed that they didn't show the Titan experiments in the anime. At the very least, seeing eren's titan try to write messages and build basic structures would've been a great visual.
I was looking for a comment that explained this because I see a lot of people confused are the experiments. It is explained clearly in the manga that this was Eren's third time in a row and that they had him performmany tasks as a titan before he exhausted himself. But yeah, in Japanese and English they just don't cover it... at all. So I don't blame anyone for being confused about Eren's transformations becoming weaker.
This season’s intro is one of my FAVES. It is so amazing and it tells some stories as well. I did not enjoy it at first but then it became a BIG favorite 😊

In episode 12 of season 2 (the final season) remember the fact that Eren was laughing while crying saying “I can’t change anything” remember that one thing of Eren laughing and crying when he feels he can’t change anything!!! That is extremely extremely important in a later season like extremely!

I see a few people have already explained how Hange and Levi had a reaction to hearing that there was a scout member named Ymir in season 2, but another big takeaway from the Ilse's Notebook OVA is that (depending on the order you watched it) this is the first time anybody heard a titan speak. For people who watched this while waiting for season 2 that was a shocking development, and then was followed up in season 2 ep 1 with the beast titan appearing and also speaking.
The look of total silence on all your faces at 33:37 & Quinn's "Face Off" was great hehe.
and yeah pretty much you can watch an OVA any time. But this one specifically would've been good to watch before season 2, all your questions that came from this episode, have either been directly or indirectly answered in season 2 already

@1:25, you guys said the person who is a Redshirt was, Miche. Who you saw get killed from the Beast Titan and the titans he was controlling in the beginning episodes of Season 2.
Edit: I noticed a lot of you guys saying we're going to lose this guy or this guys a Redshirt about characters in the first part of this video, these are all guys you've seen before who died after this episode which takes place in the past.
Im going to suggest rewatching episodes in Dub or Sub again on your own times so you can familiarize yourselves with characters and more of the plot, because in later seasons stuff is just going to be going off and being answered in rapid fire or even offhandedly without too much fanfare. Trust me, it'll help.
The first time I saw this intro I had a bit of a panic attack. My initial reaction was "Oh god, theyre gonna kill everyone this season."

Exactly what I thought
The "Chess Player" in S1 that Cmdr. Pixis was losing to was just some random noble, not The King. The "Erwin looking through the glass" in the intro is a kind of "flashback;" the man is his Father, a school teacher. The boy is young Erwin. The "stupid couple who tried to fly" that Sannes mentions under torture? Armin's parents; they were trying to assemble/launch a hot-air balloon to go outside the walls. It's why he was being raised by his grandfather. And at this point in the story, Levi doesn't know he's an Ackerman. He doesn't even know his family name; he's just Levi.
ETA: that's opening may seem kind of light and fluffy, but it's going to hit HARD later in the season; eps. 16-18 especially.

Ilse's Notebook was supposed to be watched before season 2 or after episode 1 of season 2. The relevance of the OVA was for you to remember this titan when our Ymir's backstory was revealed near the end of season 2. Maybe then you could have realized that she was called Lady Ymir by the people who seemed to worship her and that the titan in this specific OVA was one of the human followers of Ymir we saw in the flashback about her past. It's safe to assume this titan thought Ilse was Ymir (because of the freckles and physical similarity), and that is why the titan said "Lady Ymir" and showed respect. I still think it was great that you watched the OVA; however, now that you've finished season 2, it really doesn't provide new info.
KEEENNYYYYYYY.....one line, one word, one of the most iconic moments in AOT. Humans vs. Humans.

Can't wait to see what you make of the remainder of season 3 and beyond! Attack on Titan is great throughout, but around here is where it starts to get all-time great -brilliant.
They don't explain it very well in the episode, but it's not that Eren's titan is getting weaker. They were testing how many times could Eren transform in a day before collapsing. Titan shifters have a limited amount of energy. Transforming alone takes a lot of energy, so the more they transform in a short period of time, the weaker the titan shifter gets. This was shown during Eren's second tranformation in Season 1, where he started bleeding out of his nose because he had transformed shortly after his last Titan collapsed of exhaustion.

@BaddMedicine She wrote down Ymir's name , Hange just didn't know who Ymir was at this time so she didn't react to reading it... If you remember in the 'Warrior' episode when Hange first heard Historia say Ymir's name she repeated it because she remembered it being mentioned in the notebook.
Wish i could binge watch their entire reaction to season 3 right now. Two episodes a week will be torture.
