      True, “you can’t control what happens inside Russia,” but you can isolate them until they trade nukes for concessions. Even Putin is too proud to become a total vassal state of China. And with so many to trade, they could keep it going for a while.

    The western political problem is partly a feature of democracy, that is few voters wanted to know.
    There were no votes in hawkish rhetoric.

      Yes, and they have been living with this aggression for so long, feeling that nobody was listening ,except for the usual neighbors who couldn't help them enough. Now the lid came off, the world has seen how much like the rest of us Ukraine is, how "cool" their art scene, culture, etc. And how unique also, with the cossack history fueling their heroic fight for independence .

    • @garyklimitchek45
      @garyklimitchek45 Před rokem

      @@olasylvia1 interesting that many of the elites did know that Ukraine was special. Now, many older elites are talking about how they knew how special Ukraine was,even in the 1980’s. Interesting that they are now speaking up. They just say that most didn’t get it, so they didn’t talk about it. The arts, music, engineering, attitudes, etc. Thats’s why now, the truth is backed up by them when asked. The truth is the only propaganda that last. A comedian is just what Ukraine needed to open up the Curiosity of the west. He will go down in history as the first 21 century statesman. Also, elite Ukrainians were prepared to get out there, when the opening came, to get the true message out. Can’t believe how many young people were soo prepared to win the narrative when this opportunity presented itself. Maybe it was a necessity.

    • @gap6533
      @gap6533 Před rokem

      Starlink's approach is mysterious and possibly malicious. On a day of missile attacks on infrastructure in Kharkiv and Zaporizhia, and during the early throes of a russian offensive, Starlink threatens to remove the eyes of Ukrainian troops, citing their discomfort with its use in "offensive" operations. Russia is still the invader on Ukrainian land; until they are driven out, Ukraine is fighting for the defense of their country. The timing and content of this statement should make SpaceX partners in the US government nervous.

    Great video, and loved to listen to Melanyia, so well informed and sensible. Regarding the West's and in particular Germany's love affair with Putin, listen to Timothy Snyder's lecture "Germany's Historical Responsibility For Ukraine" which is available here on YT (do a search for the title). Snyder's point among others is that Russia has throughout the years systematically been cultivating Germany's WW2 guilt complex toward the USSR sacrifices (conveniently ignoring the fact that Ukraine was the primary victim of the nazi attrocities).

    • @LukeRanieri
      @LukeRanieri Před rokem +4

      Well said. Also there’s the part where the USSR and Germany were once allies, diving Poland amongst themselves. While the dissolution of that pact may have been inevitable, I perceive a great deal of irony in Russia or the USSR claiming to have been the most responsible for allied victory over Germany. When I hear this I usually want to ask, “do you mean the USSR was gobbling up Poland just to lead Germany into a false sense of security?”

      Did Russia also take advantage of the fact that post-Maidan Ukraine built a national identity looking to the heritage of the OUN and UPA, which attempted (unsuccessfully) to collaborate with the Nazis, and were themselves responsible for mass murder of groups of people (Poles, Jews) also murdered by the German Nazis?

    I have much to say about the mood of Americans towards Ukraine but I’m fairly confident that it’s politically suicidal to be a Marjorie Taylor on the issue of Ukraine. There are a lot of useful idiots for Putin but those of us who know are completely unwavering and will remain that way until Ukrainians do not need us anymore. Then it’s onto the phase of rebuilding.
    Ultimately I think It’s orders of magnitude more important to many of us that we support Ukraine, than it is to the trolls to support (Russia/ Putin whatever that is.

    Regarding Musk, I will say this:
    I dont like him, but I also dont hate him. He is a wild card, unpredictable.
    Tbf he did rush to the aid of Ukraine, as a private citizen, as a business man, when Ukraine needed help the most. Without Starlink, who knows where the front would be today. But as a business man he has to look at the numbers.
    We are not entitled to his internet. To free internet. So he has every right to limit its functionality. Especially if no particular contract was made beforehand.
    But I would have wished if he didnt decide that over night and instead contacted Kyiv and told them something like „I give you 2 months to switch to some other means of communication“.

    The need for isolating Russia permanently or at least for a long time is basically up to the russian people. If they act and revolt to change the situation it could change earlier, but the russian people seem passive to a large extend. Even if they think Putin is an idiot they will not do anything about it. With regards to russian propaganda. Yes, it is deep and substantial. Most of us now know that they never speak the truth and it is always manipulative. Their own "Pravda" to an extend that they dont even see it them selves. Are they good at it now that we know it? I think they have striking ability to scare politicians to hesitate in the necessary decisions to counter Putin and support Ukraine. This is what we saw with the Leopards and now we see the same old circus with fighter jets. The russians keep claiming red lines and escalations and how many times did we cross those allready. But it has been decisiveness in utter slow motion and that is a pitty.

I came to know Ukraine starting in 2008, and i was completely furious with Obama (for whom i voted) by 2014. I had a friend who was a retired State Department guy who agreed with me that we should have stood up to Russia in Crimea, and on the Syria no fly zone. You're wasting a lot of fury on the wrong people. Fact is, if the conditions in Ukraine were the same this year that they were in 2014 then there is not a single Western power structure that would or could have acted any differently. When Putin annexed Crimea, the Ukrainian military existed on only paper. Following Maidan, there was essentially no leadership and a barely functioning gov't. The US is not the Justice League and we've learned far too well that putting US boots on the ground amid centuries-long conflicts not of our own making only invites more disaster and too many dead Americans. So we doubled down on building up the Ukrainian military to NATO standards and 'encouraged' the development of more democratic institutions while helping them fight the rampant corruption. These steps helped to bring Ukraine to the position they were in in February where they were finally able to fight back.

    You Rock so well Paul in this really amazing show with Melaniya… It will be interesting to make a special show around an investigation about Elon Musk and his relations with Russia and China, with many different guests. Or may be if possible an open show with Elon around Russia…
    Slava Ukraine 💙💛

    I respected Musk for his drive into science and pushing the boundaries in technology, but no more. His irrational behavior and statements are too much for me. What a shame.
