Thanks for making this video. Super helpful!
Absolutely. Have a great dive!
Great video and instructions! Looking forward to moving there next month!
Thanks Tony... btw, I'm so jealous! Bucket list. Glad you get the opportunity. Please let me know how it goes.
Thank you for posting this great video. Agreed this is a must shore dive in Maui.
Sorry about the really late response. :) I missed this comment completely. I hope this finds you well. Next time my reply will be less than 24 hours.
-Cheers!
We're headed there. I really appreciate your video here to help up stay safe.
Hi Andrew Baird, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. By chance, did you subscribe to my channel? :)
Have a great day!
Very helpful!!!

Have a great day!
We had a great dive here, but really wish the county would do something about all of the garbage and folks living in their cars at this location. Also, the grass by the showers and bathrooms are now just dirt. Appears people are using the showers for daily bathing.
Agree. It was going on when I was there, but sad to hear it's gotten worse. I'm glad your dive was great! Fun area once you're under water. :)
Great video! If only using snorkel gear, would the views still be ok? Usually I got to Black Rock but would like to try someplace new.
Hey there, yes snorkel works too but you will definitely want to pay attention to boat traffic because sometimes other dive boats come in and dive. Plus that is an active boat ramp. If you snorkel I would stay around the pier and not go out more than 10-15 feet away from it. Just be careful I’m not sure how stable that pier is so you’re snorkeling there at your own risk.
@@358studios Thank you for your reply! Will try to get scuba certified for our next trip this fall (just got back 2 weeks ago but didn't know this sport was good too). Thanks!
Awesome video! Heading to Maui next week and I'm using your videos as a road map of cool shore dives.
Were you using a red filter on your camera? Or was it shallow enough to not need any filter?
Thanks again
Hey thanks, and so jealous about heading to Maui. Have a blast! All the dives we did were shallow. 25'-30' feet. The red filter still helps, but you can beat it with a combo of WB in the camera and maybe an orange or light red filter. Have fun! Let me know how Mala Pier looks.
Thanks for the advice, I’m sure I’m going to follow your suggestion! Quick question ,any suggestions on the wetsuit? 3mm?
Hey great to hear! I was a little less traditional and went with a 5mil shorty, so a full 3mil probably fine. Have a great time. So jealous.
Hi, not scuba certified but really want to snorkel this spot when we go in June. Any tips? I really want to see the sharks😂
Hi there, thanks for asking. There are snorkelers where we were diving. I'd still get in and out the same way. One BIG word of caution. The shark den is right in the middle of the boat channel. If you're snorkeling I would still tow a diver's ring with a dive flag. There are boats coming and going, so I wouldn't chance it without a dive buoy. I'd love to see video if you capture it. Have fun! So jealous. :)
Great video. Thanks. I'll be visiting Maui for a week in September with a bunch of friends. Got any suggestions for gear rental and other shore dives? Also if you're around if you'd like to meet up let me know.
Hi David,
Glad you liked the video. We rented our gear from Maui Diving, which is a little hole in the wall, but good to work with. If they get too busy there's tons of other dive shops.
For other dives, I'd recommend:
- Airport beach. Super simply, but some fun stuff. Easy entry/exit. Here's the video czcams.com/video/-LmovPpAOdI/video.html
- Black rock. It's second best shore dive in Maui. Entry/Exit is super easy, but parking car and gearing up is not obvious. Definitely watch the video... czcams.com/video/0ccngguuyX4/video.html
Most of the reefs down south end were hit pretty hard when I was there, but Mala always had something cool to surprise us every dive. If I'm there in September will definitely let you know.
When my dad and I go diving there we just jump off the pier
I would HIGHLY recommend you stop doing that. The pier has many broken pilings sitting just below the water, along with pieces of rebar and steel. In addition, the pier has not been made safe to walk on and is subject to falling apart underneath your feet. That's why they fenced it off. To each their own, but I would definitely recommend that NO ONE follow this advice. You'll see what I'm talking about when you get there.
What kind of camera were you using on this video?
Scott Gaddis it was a combination of cameras. Above water was a canon G30 (simplicity), underwater was a combo of GoPro hero III with flip filter, and my now go to camera canon G7X with Ikelite housing. I love the G7X and continue to use it, but I can’t recommend the housing. It was a bad investment and just shoddy craftsmanship. I’m switching as soon as possible. For example rubber bumpers falling off inside the housing and locking up the camera controls. The only bummer about the G7X is it has no audio-in jack or it would be the only camera I travel with. Hope this helps.
358studios Thank you. Planning to dive Mala Pier next month. Great video. I am looking at upgrading to Go Pro 6 before the trip. Thanks again!
Hey Scott, no worries. Sounds like a great time! With any of the GP I would highly recommend a flip filter. Mala isn't deep, so an orange/redish works great for color correction. If you want an idea, the close up of the turtle was shot with the GPIII with a Flip 3.1 20-25 feet filter from Backscatter. Have fun!
I know it's hard to find great dive places on vacation but Mala is not that great. I live here and shore dives a lot. Just go a little north of Mala and you will find this. Don

Great video. What are your favorite boat dives in Maui?

Is it possible to do a night dive here?
Hi Dan, I would think absolutely. And the artificial reef (old pier) should provide lots to see. We did a dive that extended a bit after dusk and were fine. I don't know your level of experience, but before you drop down, I would orient everyone to shore lights and make sure they know their compass headings. Also, I would dive it in the day and know where the pier ends (second pylon out) so you know where your turning point is. I found keeping the artificial reef on your right on the way out and left on your way back worked well for us. That allows you to dive both sides of the pier wreckage. Also, there is sometimes a north to south current that will push you up against the wreckage on your way back. Another one to try for night dives is Black Rock. Easy because you can keep the shore to your left as you round the point. Please let me know how it goes. Super excited to hear about it.
@@358studios thanks a lot for the detailed information. It helps a lot! We did two morning dives and then went a night dive. It was amazing, huge eel, lobster, spanish lobster, saw lots of shrimps, little crabs, nudibranches, an octopus, a squid, few turtles, and something looks like centipede, red and black color, very ugly lots of them, dont know what is it.... we saw lots of things, it was amazing. But when we head back, we encounter strong current that pulls us away from the shore, also the water is much shallow, so the entry of walking in the stones is longer. But in general it was a great dive!
