      May I ask you a question? Have you tried white for the second dry brush and perhaps for the non-metallic parts of the model? Curious how the highlights would look with white on metallic.
      Thanks for the excellent video! CSM might actually be an option now...

      Thanks for watching! I haven't actually tried white for the highlights, I need to do more experiments with slap chop techniques so that could be a good thing to investigate! It may very well add some nice pop to some of the areas in a brighter way than even the silver! 😀

    One suggestion/request - for future videos, would it be possible to put a list of the paints in the description as well as during the video?
    Thanks again 😊

    Nice Vid and tutorial 👍got yourself a subscriber.
    My recommend would be at 5:37. when applying nuln oil or any wash, aim to apply the wash more into the shadows of the silver trim left from the earlier stages of dry brush and leave the highest parts without it.
    It will create a TMM effect naturally and easily, adding more depth to the highlighted silver.Then run runefang or canoptek silver (a bright silver) over the highest points and a bright edge highlight to finish up the effect. Works on all the open plates of silver.
    Keep making great content 👍

      Thanks for watching mate, and great to have you on board! Excellent tips as well, some sparing wash and bright silver highlights can really make metal areas pop with pretty minimal effort! 😀

  • @KrullMaestaren

    You could try to apply some matt varnish with a brush on bits that you don't want shiny like the loin cloth and maybe leather.

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem +1

      Great idea, I've never thought about this! I was originally going to paint the loincloth in a pale leather but then I thought it would be cooler to try and use metallic on the whole mini! 🙂

    • @KrullMaestaren
      @KrullMaestaren Před rokem +1

      @@TheHobbyGrotto Playing with matt to gloss varnish is in my opinion a good first dip into advanced trix. You can also paint a matt figure, example Eldar. Varnish it matt and then apply one or more layers of gloss varnish on just the gems to make them shiny shiny (and maybe other bits like blood) 🙂
      I think it is good that you did metallic slapchop. A lot of people bash on slapchop because of the black -> grey -> white process that often results in dark tones. Truth is that you don't even have to do the black. Seen people start of with ta dark blue primer, then one or more shades of blue with a final white on top. Gives wonderful results when you use transparent paints on top of this.
      You could just as easily start from a dark red or why dark at all? You can use a much brighter color for the primer if you want and will give better results if you want a bright mini 🙂

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem +1

      This is all great stuff, thanks for writing! I do sometimes use gloss and satin varnishes in targeted areas after I've sprayed the mini in dullcote to bring back some shine, it's very useful!
      I feel the same way about slap chop, there are lots of useful techniques involved that can be applied to different things, hopefully I've inspired some people to experiment with these mediums and try new ideas! 😊

  • @Sturmensky
    @Sturmensky Před rokem +1

    That turned out amazing! I really wasn't expecting it to turn out *that good* lol. Also, good advice on doing contrasts in a single pass. I think a lot of us are used to doing minor adjustments, but that is *not* what you want with contrasts. The only exception I make is the odd time I'll use black/brown contrasts for extra weathering - letting it half dry, then scrubbing it/adjusting it (a technique I also use with washes) - in which case, the tide marks and streaks are your friend.
    Also: greeeeeeeeeeeen.

      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem +1

      Definitely would be something interesting to try, I was thinking of a similar effect with painting Celestial Lions. You could do a TMM gold over the whole model and then add blue contrast paints and the blue bits would have a nice greenish tone to them.

      Sorry I missed your reply! Yes, best idea is to experiment with different colours on a test piece, the contrast paints create so many interesting and cool effects! I've not actually tried it over much other than silvers, because I want the silver to replicate the usual grey/white zenithal so I might need to check out some gold myself! 😁

    How would you paint some gold trim if you wanted to keep the rest of it steel? Just normal gold or would you apply something like nazdreg, aggaros, or seraphim sepia?

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem

      Definitely the easiest way would be to apply a yellow glaze to the trim with something like Nazdreg Yellow, alternatively you could carefully apply some thinnned down metallic gold to the trim areas, this will give a more traditional tmm gold look for some extra time spent. My recommendation would be to try both styles on a small part of the trim and see which you prefer both in look and timewise 😊

    • @bartprimrose5659
      @bartprimrose5659 Před rokem +1

      @@TheHobbyGrotto I don't really know how to thin properly. Either ends up too wet and pigments pool/don't adhere, or too transparent. I probably should stick to the nazdreg and maybe just add TMM edge highlights haha

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem +1

      You don't really need to thin metallics, it just can help a bit with the brush control when applying them. You can't go wrong with Nazdreg Yellow though, any kind of yellow contrast/speed paint over the metallic silver will create a suitable gold 😄
