    I'm doing a gaslands monster truck build with a duo of skulls on the front of the truck. That brown wash I hope will bring out not just the skulls and bones on future builds

      Definitely! Browns and black washes are perfect for so many things in miniature painting, they're one of my favourite tools! 😊

    This painting style is the OG painting style before Contrast and "slap chop" :D prime/Base coat, Medium tone, highlight. And because you don't want to sit there forever: dry brush. Ironic that a skeleton which is only one color actually is the best show case to explain the method :D

      Thankyou! I'm a big fan of that classic style! There's just something about skeletons which make them excellent minis, they have fantastic contrast at this small scale 😁

      Haha awesome, love this! Years ago I actually converted a number of my old TK skeletons into Soulblight, or Legions of Nagash as they were back then, and they truly were the immortal warriors! Plus also the Tomb Kings skellies are my favourite era of skellies! 😆

    Is that the new nuln oil? How do you stop it looking shiny?

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem +1

      It is the new formula. I have the old stuff still but I've switched to the new Nuln Oil in my videos so they're more relatable. It's actually more shiny on the terrain around the skeleton because I only painted that up to a certain level because it wasn't important for the video but the new formula definitely has some overall shine. The first thing is to always make sure you shake it for ages, but the best way to remove shine is with a matt varnish over the whole model at the end, this will eliminate it and give all your paints the same finish. I rarely varnish minis from my videos so you will generally still see some shine from the Nuln Oil, particularly because I use very bright lights for shooting 😁

    Thanks, nice demo. I appreciate that you didn't drag this out into a 25 minute video like some others would. FWIW, I do prefer to leave my skellies on the darker side with more tan colors, not a fan of the super-bleached look. I would have stopped at the Ashanti bone stage.

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks for watching, I always try to keep my videos as efficient as possible! The range of different colours you can paint skeletons is actually very cool, I do like the darker tones and brownish colours as well, reminds me of the old Warhammer Fantasy skeletons which had more of that tan look to them 😁

  • @Sturmensky

      @@TheHobbyGrotto I'd also be curious to hear your thoughts on different drybrushes - both in terms of usefulness, and different textures. Most of the time, I tend to use whatever of my brushes is most massacred; though I have two proper drybrushes - a mid-sized one with a fairly flat tip, and a bigger one with a broader, split brush. They don't see as much action.

    Any tips on how to paint "frozen/cold bones"? If that make sense. I was thinking of making a new VC army to The Old World with a snow/ice theme and looking to avoid the more "mushy brown/dirty" bone style I have on my old VC army. In other words which colours would you use for a cold palette for skeletons? And many thx for the videos! Cheers from Sweden

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks for watching! I haven't painted any skeletons in a cold icy theme before but a couple of ideas; firstly you can highlight up to a more dominant pure white on the bones. This will create more contrast and a less saturated colour for a more monotone look which can help make the mini colder overall. You could also look at applying a thin glaze of ice blue over the bones, not so much that they go all blue, but enough so they get that pale tone to them. I might make a video on this in the future as you've got me thinking about it now! 😁

      I will certainly be looking into it! I think also you want some good ice/snow bases, that really does more than anything else for setting the environment 😁

    • @00Kuja00
      @00Kuja00 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@TheHobbyGrotto Yes, that would be great. I have found some examples here on youtube on ice/snow bases, but the basning has to be somewhat cold/dark aswell, to not get the undeads too bright. it's tricky. Thank you for your replies.

    Woah, someone who uses synthetic brushes - are they bending after short use? If not, what brand are you using!?!

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 6 měsíci

      I use a variety of different brushes (including synthetic) but I rarely have any bending, I think a fair amount of that comes down to technique and the surfaces you are painting on. In saying all that, I use the Citadel Medium Layer Brush for the vast majority of my work, which is a sable brush. I've been trying out their synthetic STC brushes, they handle a bit differently and I'm not sold on them yet!

    • @kaibe5241
      @kaibe5241 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Interesting. I've always had issues with synthetics, some that bend after the first paint session!!!@@TheHobbyGrotto

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 6 měsíci

      Any particular brands that you use? I also use Army Painter brushes, generally though I expect brushes to decay over time and get rotated into other duties like washes and bases but for it to be curling in the first session is crazy!

    Hello Mr. Grotto, we have a common friend with Dan Kirby. I watch your channel but never commented. (sorry) I would like to voice that a dry-brush tutorial is something I would be very interested in. I think it is a simple technique yet, it has its finesse which can be tricky. Add to that the actual highlight color and it can become testy to say the least. Some guidance on technique and color would be much appreciated. Thank You sir.
