- 031 - Gene Regulation
Paul Andersen explains how genes are regulated in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. He begins with a description of the lac and trp operon and how they are used by bacteria in both positive and negative response. He also explains the importance of transcription factors in eukaryotic gene expression.

Excuseme what gene do I need to activate to get that jawline
Smooth. Flirting with your teacher
FOXP2 Gene
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Checking out mewing. Great vids on CZcams about it
Lmao
Watched this man throughout high school AP bio and watching him again for my college bio final. This man is seriously the GOAT
im on that first part lets see if i come back for the second half
lol yeah I am learning this for my genetic class currently
I'm in medical school aka the third part and yes, he is incredibly helpful
7899
Same!I just realize I has been watching his videos at different times for 5 years 🤣
If only my teacher could explain things like this,my life would be a lot more easier! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the great comment. Best of luck with your studies.
I swear you are right :( I dnno why our lecturers don't explain things like that I feel that they even make things more complicated .. hopefully none of them will notice my comment lol
I have a professor that is impossible. When people in the class ask questions, he never answers them directly. It is so frustrating. Your videos help me so much, and are probably the only reason I am actually passing. Thank you for posting them!
My prof teaches with his videos.
"...and I hope thats helpful"
Dude...that was WAY more than helpful!
THANK YOU!
Of course I remember you. I'm happy to hear that you are majoring in molecular genetics. You will be smarter than me very soon. Let's Go Deacons!
What lol
7 years passed, wondering how Deacons is
he's probably replying to a comment. Deacons are probably the name of the university team name. My mans probably in his early career by now
Ooop whoever had him as a teach is hella lucky
The inducer-repressor control of the lac operon is an example of ----negative control----, in which expression is normally blocked. In contrast, the CAP-cAMP system is an example of positive control, because expression of the lac operon requires the presence of an activating signal-in this case, the interaction of the CAP-cAMP complex with the CAP region.
this guys my teacher in real life for AP Bio...hes so great, its my favorite class of the day.
Tatsko mbn
how did you turn out my man?
@@d25syed10 drug dealer
watching this video is my home work...... shows how much my teacher actually does
amen to that! my teacher doesn't do crap
lmao.
yeet
At least it's a short (and very helpful) video.
I have a good teacher and we still watch these, it's for extra support and also we move too quickly because it's AP to explain everything repeatedly
Goodness, the most LUCID explanation out there. This is the first time I've heard of this process, and it clicked right away. Thanks so much for putting so much effort into your illustrations, and I'm so looking forward to exploring your other videos in other topics and subjects! I can't thank you enough for your wonderful work!
This guy works really well, he straight and to the point and he only takes 9-10 mins to explain things where as in class the instructor takes 40-50 mins of just throwing info at you and you don't really get anything out it. Really I appreciate your videos you obviously know your materials.
See I remember using this video when I was in high school doing AP bio and now I am using it in medical school years later and the quality is still excellent. Thank you so much for your videos and exceptional teaching! Kudos!
Currently cramming for the AP exam and honestly your videos are the only thing keeping me going right now
The Lac Operon is an example of negative control, not positive. I'm confused here lol
Professor Anderson, your videos have truly been a life savor for me this semester. I'm taking a genetic course online, so I'm unfortunately missing the lectures that I desperately need. But with your videos, I can get the clarification I need that my book can't always convey!
Bozeman, your videos helped me through high school freshman bio, AP bio, college bio, and now med school biochem. seriously an amazing resource!!
been watching your videos for two years...always a GREAT help. Thank you so much, Professor!
I swear this channel saved my life. Idk how i could've gotten through ap bio without this channel. Thank you so much for the help!
Thank you so much! You explained three first year-bio lectures in a 10 minute video. And it all made sense!
I feel like I could get an A on this, but I still don't truly understand.
this is me with practically all of school
especially math
I couldn't have summed up my school experience better
I was contemplating a change in my major until I stumbled upon your vidoes!! They are very attention keeping (I would know because I am terribly ADHD) and the way you explain everything helps me feel like I could learn anything. I've been pulling all nighters and I still don't want to fall asleep like I do during my lecture. So again, thank you for your videos and all of the knowledge that you have shared with me.
You have no idea how helpful this was, I was staring at the figures in this section of my book for a good 15 minutes and didn't understand a thing and you explained it all in 10, thank you!
My teacher has resorted to assigning your videos for homework... We worship you in my class; You are AMAZING. Thanks for all the hard work that went into making all these lovely videos.
o.h mY g o d
My class got booted onto online AP Bio before our teacher left mid-year. Your videos are so much more helpful than the online course I'm taking.
i just couldn't listen and had to repeat the video cause i was staring at Paul the whole time... dat jawline....
These videos have saved my sanity in my AP Bio class. Keep doing what you're doing, it is so appreciated!
You are honestly a life-saver!!!! Very helpful, and easily understandable. Thank you so much for your video!
I have probably viewed over 20 of your videos and have found all of them to be very helpful. I was shocked to see that only 2 people have donated on your website (bozemanscience) I'll be adding my name to that list. Thank you Mr. Anderson.
it's crazy I was 15 and watching Bozeman for AP bio and now I'm 19 and in Cell Bio and you still help me out! This is amazing thank you!
Dude I live in India and in my high school i almost spent a day or 2 just trying to figure out this operon..reading tens of books but still couldn't understand much. I now realise this is what it means to be a teacher how u explained it marvellously! Me being an average student no teacher near me really cleared my doubts but thank you for ur efforts!!❤
That was extremely useful! Thank you so much! I finally get it!
Somehow, you always manage to make everything seem so simple.
Your videos have literally saved my VCE life! Thanks so much for sharing :D
this guy really is the man.. I always watch his videos before i start a new chapter because he helps understand the basics/foundation of everything then i feel comfortable getting into details in my textbook. Thanks a lot Mr.Anderson !
Thank you so much. Mr. Andersen if all teachers were as talented as you, we would live in different world. Your videos are very helpful and informative!
Thank you very much for the video. I showed it to a few of my students and it helped them immensely.
Thank you so much for your video. It helped me a lot. Now I can understand more about the operon lac. You are a great teacher! Please continue like this! ❤️
You helped me through honor's bio in high school and now you're helping me through bio 1 in college! you're the best!
How this guy prepared his lecture is a work of art.
You are absolutely the best teacher to explain all this things. Thanks for your time and dedication
The Lac Operon can be positive or negative but there example you describes as "positive control" is actually negative control because the Lac operon is off when the repressor is active.
I'm 5 years late but that's exactly what I was gonna say...that was a negative control
You saved my life once again!
My Pre-AP textbook puts this simple process in such complicated words that it becomes hard to understand. The exact same thing that you said is out in my textbook in 25 pages. You are my hero. I guess I don't have to read my book now. You saved my grades. Thanks man :)
Love love loveeeee all your videos!!!! So much more helpful than any other youtubers!!!
Thank you Mr. Anderson.. Your teaching helped me understand Gene expression....especially the LAC operon and the functions and movement of RNA polymerase, repressor and the operator.
WoW!
This video explains the whole chapter in just 10 minutes. It is way better itself than the lecture we had.
Thank you very much Mr. Anderson.
-Bio major @ Ryerson University
You make everything so simplified. Thank God for you.
Thank you Bozeman Science for getting me through my biology class!
that was very helpful Mr. Anderson I'm IMG and I studying biochemistry after more that 12 year , and your video with all the explain graphics really helped me out
this is the first time i can clearly understand about gene expression, thank you mr.Andersen..may god bless you
30 minutes of reading explained very well in 10 minutes...I would like to thank you on behalf of us lost BIO students!
Amazing explanation, great animation and idea map at the beginning.
Great video for clarifying some major aspects of gene regulation. It is almost important to take into consideration the physical state of the chromatin involved in the process for this is another major factor which impacts gene expression.
I'm from Iraq and I'm studying med in Romania and thanks to you I have so much clarified out so God bless you.A lot of Romanian students are also watching your videos and they're saying it's so helpful to them in bio classes. Bet you didn't know there are overseas viewrs for your videos. Thanks again.
honestly the money i paid for this course should be given towards bozemanbiology .................. your videos helped me understand the concept way clearer than the book. Effort highly appreciated. Thanks :)
you are amazing. thank you for putting in the time to make videos like this.
Thank you so very much; I pay big money for "an education", and you explain it better int en minutes than in ten lectures. Thank you!!!
You have made this so much easier to understand, Thank you! Now I need to know more about cAMP and CAP
Took me 5pages to read all this and my notes are all over the place. Watched this video and learn it all with no problem - Thanks a lot please post more videos Love how you teach.
Awesome! Exactly what I needed and perfectly explained!
Thank you! My lecturer spent an hour explaining this and I did not understand anything. You made this so simple to understand!
Also, just to be clear, that article was not my sole source for information, I was just offering it as a resource because I found it to be concise. You do such a great job of explaining, I hope you update and correct this video, because I love your channel and find it to be an awesome resource for students!
You have literally just taught me more in 10 minutes that my teacher has in a month. Life.saver. :)
Thanks a lot ..your videos are so informative and well done..
Lac operon = negative control bc transcription occur only when repressor fail to bind to the operator
Trp operon = positive control
10,822 views, and 28 comments. That's crap. You have a wonderful way of describing things and I hope you understand that your efforts matter.
Thanks for the info. But i don't think positive regulation is the correct terminology to use for the allolactose binding to the lac repressor. Positive regulation is specifically the binding of an activator to it's regulatory sequence and thereby increasing gene product.
The lac operon is definitely an example of negative control! Not sure why he said positive
i have a test tomorrow and left my book and notes at school...i'm so glad i found a useful and informative video. i am now reassured! thanks so much!!!
i really appreciate your work. you have helped me immensely in understanding biology - sometimes when you're reading pages on pages of text from the text book none of it is absorbed. This interactive video really captures the ideas and concepts the textbook is trying to explain, so thankyou
This video is fabulous. You have no idea how many times I've watched it for my biology final tomorrow. Very helpful :)
You are amazing, this video is amazing and it helped me so much I can't find the words to describe it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you soo much. My teacher hasn't taught us a thing this year and this is the only teacher I get even if you're online
Thank you so much. I’ve leaned these educational videos on CZcams are better than my teacher for biotech.
Thank you thank you thank you Mr. Andersen! Bio exam on Monday, and your videos are saving me!
Excellent as always. Two classes and three different textbooks couldn't reach me with what only took 10 minutes here.
:) You're an excellent teacher. You've taught me more in ten minutes than my teacher did over the course of ten class periods.
As a student going for a masters in biochemistry I couldn't do without videos like these. In other words yes it was very helpful.
Why can't my biology teacher just explain everything like this! Very helpful, thank you so much. I love all of your videos.
Idk how I'd get through AP Bio without you
I missed some lessons on this but understood everything perfectly thanks to this video! A lot of videos are only good for revision purposes so you only understand them once you've already been taught the topic, but this video was excellent for someone like me who hadn't visited the topic at all.
Important info explained simply, Thanks so much:)
Great video! So helpful with breaking everything down in a simple way!
thanks alot :) i have been searching everywhere for this on youtube and your way of explaining this was perfect :)
Thank you SO much. I don't understand why professors can't explain like this. If youtube and people like you didn't exist I'd fail my bio tests
thanks for sharing. It was so easily explained ,I feel very relieved now.
Greetings from several medstudents at charles uni in Prague! Very helpful, thank you!
You are so much better than my Biochemistry course in-charge.
Gosh! I used to sit in class horrified... staring at those slides. :P
YOU'VE SAVED MY GRADES, THANK YOU, YOU'RE AMAZING!!!
This makes me think about Feed the Beast. Many operations I've made use the "positive control" to perform tasks
tomorrow is my test i think i had a grip on this. thanks to you!
This was so unbelievably helpful! Thank you so much!
This video is gold. Thank you so much for the help!
Thank you so much! You are such an amazing person! Good luck in everything you do!
Ahhh now I understand. Thank you for explaining WHY things happen and real world examples of this. Very helpful!
Thank you mr. You are helping me with my IB Biology studies. Thank you very much! God bless you!
All i needed was a quick review for a competition!(: thank you
I like the way you explain it. Thanks for doing all these vids.
Thank you so much Mr. Andersen! Your videos are very simple and informative! =D
Thank you so much !! Now I can understand gene repression!!!!
Although my English is not good ,I still can understand !!! How awesome you are!!!!!!
Thank you for this Mr. Andersen.
perfect, never cease to educate me, thank you.
Wow I was totally confused with this topic, but now I finally understand. This video was a great amount of help. Great video!
Thank you Mr. Anderson, I am in Medical Microbiology and I did not understand this concept by just reading the book. I am so confident that I understand this more . I Love this video that I am going to send it to all my friends and professor to show the entire class.
