THE TRAGIC LIFE OF VISERYS III

  • Viserys III is a terrible person, both in the books and on the tv show. He is cruel and vain and a classical bully - some might even say he is a downright villain. However, is it possible that there are reasons for Viserys’s behaviours? Is it possible that Viserys’s cruelty is as a result of his circumstances? We know that Viserys wasn’t always cruel to Daenerys and that there are passages throughout the books in which Dany thinks back on him affectionately. She acknowledges the pain and the fear that he made her feel throughout her life, but she also cannot deny the significant role that he played in her survival and upbringing. Sometimes, she finds herself fondly remembering the sweet boy that he used to be, and not the monstrous man that he later became. So who was that ‘sweet boy’ that Viserys used to be and how did he become the monster that we come to know in the books? Is this video, we explore whether the tragic circumstances of Viserys’s life warrant a little sympathy for the man himself.

    He emerges as a captivating yet tragic figure, driven by his obsession with power and entitlement. While his troubled past and dedication and care for his sister evoke sympathy, my feelings toward him are conflicted. The screen character didn’t capture his complexities, portraying him as weak rather than flawed. Nevertheless, I remain unconvinced of his suitability for rulership. Your video was excellent once again; you nearly succeeded in making me like Viserys.

      I actually think that Harry Lloyd did a rather good job at capturing the whiny brat Viserys was described as in A Game of Thrones. Even in the book, we only see Viserys as a weak and pitiful thing, and we don't really see the complexities that led to him being that way. It's only through Dany's POVs in the subsequent novels that we learn about how tragic Viserys truly was. It's actually Daenerys that humanizes him. It's through her perspective that we learn to empathize with Viserys a bit... or at least I did lol. 🙈 But I do understand why some people might not be able to.
      Anyway, thanks for watching the video. Stay tuned for more. ❤️

    I hate how in the show D&D made us believe that was Danys first sign of madness with her having her brother killed all because of her reaction. She was obviously numb but knew her brother has been long gone. The problem I had was them not showing how she missed how her brother used to be and having regret for what happened it’s like they took out majority of her humanity and tried to make her cold which is why Emilia was sometimes fighting them about

      The same brother who had psychically/sexually abused and traumatized her for years. The same brother who should have protected her but instead sold her to a barbarian war-lord famous for raping and pillaging- in exchange for a small army. And then he held a sword to her stomach and threatened to carve her unborn child out of her because the man he sold her to hadn't paid for her yet? The real monster here is HER because she didn't cry for her abuser? God the writers were so dumb 🤦‍♀️.

      Ive always felt this way too, I think Viserys was just trying to get Drogo to take him seriously. Plus, wasn't he drunk in that moment? He probably was just acting without thinking and letting alcohol make choices for him. His whole situation is sad when you really know the backstory and what lead to his death.

    Yes I always felt bad for Viserys as a kid. Being born a prince & to have your whole family killed & your mother die in childbirth & taken from your home to have to raise your baby sister with nothing but a name. Had to be traumatizing but it doesn’t excuse the weak & cruel man he grew to be. I do wish him & Daenerys could’ve been fostered at Winterfell or Highgarden.

    • @thecriticalmaester9702
      @thecriticalmaester9702  Před 2 měsíci +10

      Totally agree. 💯 It doesn't excuse the weak and cruelty of the man, but it does show that he is a lot more complex than we might originally think. I can't imagine going through the same things as he had went through, so I don't know how I would react in the same circumstances. But I can't lie and say that I don't understand where his anger came from. He was a tragic character and I feel bad for what he went through... and he was also a cruel scumbag who abused and terrified his sister for many years. Two of those things can be true at once, I think. 🤔
      Anyway, thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. ❤

    Considering how traumatic it is in real life for older siblings to suffer parentification, without the added stress of running from enemies and assassins along with the stress of starvation and poverty, Viserys was doomed to have some severe psychological damage even without any potential genetic influence or his father's influence in raising him (which itself was undoubtedly traumatizing). Viserys might have lost the mental health genetic lottery, but even if he hadn't had a genetic predisposition to mental illness, he probably would have been mentally unwell.

    He's a person with really terrible issues. He certainly is misunderstood, and it's annoying that people just see him as a cartoon villain to hate. Everywhere he went, people mistreated him unbelievably viscously. He never could stay in one place for too long. The most traumatizing part would not be able to understand any of it. Very well put, and I think a lot of people misunderstand his character. I honestly think it kinda makes sense why he acts the way he does towards the end. He had been basically struggling his entire life to get anywhere, let alone getting the iron throne, yet his sister married Drogo and suddenly she's pretty much given everything pretty fast. Granted, her marriage didn't start out great, but through his POV he saw it as she was given what he never got. I'm not saying he was a good guy, but it's kinda understandable when you consider what he's seen and been through. Who knows how he would've turned out had he lived longer.

    Honestly I always saw Viserys as an evil counterpart to Nani from Lilo and Stitch. Both of them were very young and ended up having to becoming a parent to their sibling while still dealing with the trauma of losing their parents at such a young age. But while Nani became compassionate, hard working, flexible and willing to move on with her life despite giving up on her dreams, Viserys became bitter, cruel, selfish and obsessed with getting his throne back no matter that cost. And that desire ended up transforming him into Dany's abuser rather than her ally. I actually hate Robert Baratheon more than Viserys because Viserys has a lot of good reasons for becoming the way he is while Robert had everything given to him on a silver plate and still became an awful husband, awful father, awful king, and even an awful friend given the tragedy of the Starks started because Robert decided Ned should be his Hand and he didn't FEEL like being a proper king. Trust me, I was upset when Viserys died unmourned and forgotten while everyone in the story keeps pretending Robert was a better king than the Targaryens. And this is coming from someone who felt Robert's Rebellion was justified and Aerys II needed to be stopped and put down. I just lost sympathy for Robert when Gregor Clegane murdered Elia Martell and her two children and Robert approved of it and then married the daughter of the man who gave the order. THAT was the moment Robert stopped being a good king and Robert's Rebellion no longer felt like a just cause.

      I couldn't agree more. Many fans treat Robert like he was a great guy and king, but in reality the guy was a terrible man and a pretty bad king. Granted, I wouldn't say he was worse than Aerys, but people who say he was a great king are very wrong. Guy basically was cool with innocent children being murdered and basically didn't take being king seriously and treated it like a giant party. Plus, even if he had married Lyanna, he probably wouldn't have been a great husband anyway. People who hate on characters like Viserys but love Robert always baffled me.

    what a messed up childhood.. his life is as tragic as his end was violent.
    In the books and the tv show all we get to see that was left of the brother Dany remembers, is a broken man, rather a shell, full of delusions and disdain towards an indifferent world.

    I have always felt that if we had a POV chapter from Viserys we would understand him more. Image being 8 years old and your whole family is killed. Suddenly you are responsible for an infant sister and for re-establishing your house. He felt that he had to get the thrones back for his family and avenge their deaths. He wasn't cmpletely crazy when he said that Robert was coming after them. Robert was tracking them. And he was humiliated time and again when he had to beg for food and shelter, not just for himself but for his little sister. If George ever wrote a short story of his life we would probably find out that he suffered even more than we know. And as much as he was cruel, he never killed anyone. He did little more than slap and pinch like a child. Dany murdered countless people and is looked at by many as a hero.

Aerys was dead and he would've presumed that Dany and Viserys would be too, so the only person left to serve would be the king now sitting on the Iron Throne - which would be Robert. The Kingsguard don't take vows of vengeance like the Dothraki bloodriders do. They don't technically have to avenge their king. In one of my favorite fan fics (A Shawdowed Path), Viserys becomes king even after Rhaegar wins the rebellion and sets Elia aside for Lyanna (Aerys still dies but not by Jamie's hand). Rhaella is the main factor behind this because technically, Rhaegar got an annulment without permission from his father who was still king at the time which in turn leads to Aegon/Jon technically being a bastard since the marriage shouldn't have been sanctioned. Rhaella still remembers the previous Blackfyre rebellions and sets to make sure that a true born Targaryen takes the throne (it turns out later that Rhaegar and Lyanna don't have any more children). In this story, Rhaella's protection, advice, and influence on her younger son are evident and it did make me wonder how book Viserys would have turned out had he had a mother's love

    While the show didn't get everything write(especially after they went off book), season 1's speech Viserys gives as he tells Jorah how he's had to carry the burden of the Targaryen Dynasty his whole life. The show didn't give enough about how much Viserys sacrificed, how he gave up the last heirloom of his beloved mother(who kept the truth of his fathers monstrous nature from him)to raise the girl who he judged for killing her. He was a good brother for a time, but the burden, the pain and the paranoia of his belief that Robert had sent hired knives after him(from the discussions between Robert and Ned, this was untrue, as Jon Arryn convinced Robert not to when he was crowned and Robert only put a price on them after he learned Dany was pregnant).
    Viserys begged for help from the sellsword companies and they drank his wine and ate his food and laughed in his face. While what he did to Daenerys cannot be forgiven, we can see in the preceding chapter to his fatal crowning(and the same chapter where she tries to gift him the Dothraki garb)that Daenerys, despite naming him as the person who told her who she was, was already planning on unseating him(in AGOT, as they arrive at Vaes Dothrak, Dany discusses how her son needs bloodriders of his own when her son sits the Iron Throne(an impossibility unless Viserys were dead.)
    From the Arianne chapter released for TWOW, Arianne is already fairly disturbed that Dany just sat back and watched as her brother was murdered, so I hope this is plot point is continued.

    i think killing him early was a mistake. if you are going to end the story with two big players targaryans, it shouldnt be the character that was introduced mid fifth book out of nowhere and dany, but dany and her brother, because then you would have character development and emotional impact with dany fighting her brother.

      That would be a good movie. Sad and glum perhaps, but still good in the hands of a good screenwriter and director. 🤔

    Didn’t Viserys try to rape his sister at one point? I understand that his life was messed up, but I don’t think that I can get over that fact. I think that Viserys was irredeemable at that point.
    Great video, but I have no sympathy for this guy.

      I understand what you mean, but I also don't think that Illyrio's words can be fully trusted. He SAYS that Viserys almost assaulted his sister, but is it actually true? I'm not so sure. Illyrio is a notorious liar in the books, so much so that even Tyrion takes his words with a grain of salt - and he's only just met him. He can tell that the man is slimy and dishonest, and that lies come as easily to him as breathing does to normal men. So, I don;t know if Illyrio can be fully trusted... that's not to say that Viserys never hurt his sister, because we know that he has, even on theshow, but I just don't believe anything that Illyrio says. Or at least believe very little of it. 🤔

      It would certainly be inkeeping with Viserys's extreme sense of entitlement, and he might have tried to internally justify it as a way of keeping the traditions of his house alive.

    Whichever way you slice and dice it, he was a sh**bag... we all make choices in life

    • @thecriticalmaester9702
      @thecriticalmaester9702  Před 2 měsíci

      I understand, but I just think that there are reasons for why he became a shitbag... you know what I mean? 🤔 Like, I understand that people make choices in their life, and that how you choose to react in a situation is all on you, but I can also understand - given the tragic circumstances of his life - why he chose to react the way that he did.
      I've never gone through anything like Viserys has gone through in his life, but I imagine that it would also make me angry, bitter and determined to win back my father's throne if I had... but yeah, sure, you're right. It doesn't justify his treatment of his sister...
      I just think it's a lot more nuanced than "Viserys is an evil scumbag". The character is a lot more complex than that.

    Viserys was never a king. Jon snow was rightfully Heir to the throne. 😂

      Well, in the books, nothing has been confirmed yet. And Viserys was the rightful king, technically speaking. It's just that nobody wanted him on the throne. And technically, he was crowned at the end... with a pot of molten gold, though. 😅
