  • Bluetooth speakers are nothing new. But could a speaker from IKEA that costs $50 -- and sounds awesome -- be too good to be true?

    Probably one of the reasons this thing seems to work so well, despite Audio not exactly being one of Ikea's key strengths, is that it was actually a partnership with Sonos that created this speaker. I imagine Ikea just handled the design. I'd love to demo these at some point or another, but driving to an Ikea for speakers is odd. Maybe if I decide to also get a Swedish Meatball lunch as well one day.

    I had to leave a comment. The filming, editing, and commentary were absolutely fantastic here. You outdid yourself, and many others with this review.
    Also have to mention, the segment that starts around 2:07 is brilliant. Carrying the mic in, then the pan with the mic in place and the seemless cut from source material to microphone capture is genius (not to mention letting the tune build behind your commentary in the lead-up, then letting it continue past the comparison).
    Great look at, and listen of, Eneby. Keep up the terrific work sir.

    I had a listen today, and I agree they sound great for such an inexpensive loudspeaker. Whomever designed them are applying active equalization to compensate for flaws in the frequency response of their drivers, sort of like what SonarWorks and Dirac are doing with headphones. The smaller Eneby 20 does sound more neutral in the mid-range than the bigger Eneby 30, though I suspect the latter will play louder.

    • @ThisDoesNotCompute
      @ThisDoesNotCompute  Před 6 lety +5

      I'm sure there's some amount of EQ going on, but I suspect it's less than one might expect -- probably just a low-frequency bump due to the relatively small woofer size.

    • @wellroundedsound2422
      @wellroundedsound2422 Před 5 lety +1

      @@ThisDoesNotCompute From factory there is no EQ applied. Just well engineered product with appropriately sized up enclosure and a bass reflex. That is why it sounds more neutral than most DSP over processed Bluetooth speakers. The crossover is handled electronically - yet another benefit to sound clarity. The bass and the treble (effectively an EQ) can be adjusted via main volume control. (check the manual) Cheers!

    You said Bluetooth 4.0 - does anybody know what advantages these different 'versions' of BT have? Like, surely, once you're able to transmit audio from a device to a speaker back in BT 1.0 whenever, that should be it right? What more do we need to innovate/improve by subsequent BT versions? Or, to put it another way, why should I buy a speaker that has 4.0 over, say, a cheaper one that only has 1.0 or 2.0??

      Peanut Turner basically newer versions have better audio quality and some extra range and better connectivity. $50 is getting really good for a small Bluetooth speaker, some like this have new features that will last longer than a cheaper Bluetooth 1,2 as they will eventually become obsolete and faster than a Bluetooth 3,4 device

    • @foorje

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před 6 lety +4

      Bluetooth 1.0 was probably never out for real. 1.1 and 1.2 contain important fixes, such as avoiding failure in presence of WiFi. These all support just HFP, hands free profile, which is sufficient to transfer speech to be transmitted over a 4KHz band limited phone channel. You don't do music over HFP.
      2.0 added EDR, radically increasing data rate, and further 2.x versions fine tuned that to make it more reliable. This is where A2DP protocol was first implemented, which is suitable to transfer music, and it comes with simple lossy compressor SBC, which isn't too bad but has audible issues. AVRCP has also been added then, using this protocol the host can convey to the remote the name of song/artist/video and receive volume, pause, skip and fast-forward/reverse commands from the remote.
      3.0 added lots of things not used for audio, but also stream priorities, which can be relevant for audio.
      4.0 and newer versions add and fine-tune a completely new and incompatible with prior Bluetooth versions Bluetooth Low Energy mode which cannot be used for audio. So when audio manufacturers claim compliance with that, they still exclude BLE and it's of zero relevance in this specific instance.
      Mandated quality has stayed the same ever since 2.0, but some manufacturers made use of enhanced reliability of the link to provide somewhat better quality, though they usually didn't. BT3 devices often include additional proprietary additions not related to BT3 per se like MP3 over A2DP and AAC over A2DP to avoid lossy audio recompression, with very limited host support, and BT4 devices often include AptX which was supposed to take off as a quasi standard for really high quality audio but didn't.

I personally don't have much experience with BT sound transmition, hence why I'm asking for opinions. but I've seen many articles by supposed experts, that say this technology is a bit subpar for sound transmission. If you want to send sound over bluetooth you have to heavily compress it while if you use a physical cable you can easily use lossless/uncompressed files if you wanted to. There's only one thing wrong with the Eneby speaker... It's not possible to pair two to stereo(!)
    So that means in order to have stereo your transmitting device has to support two and split signals to them. It exists but it's quite rare. I believe all that's needed is a firmware update. So much a bummer. Not only would many more buy Enebys - most people would also not just buy one but two(!)

    I believe you should say the speaker is 70 if it doesn't include the battery.

      Not everyone necessarily wants the battery, and the speaker works fine without it...that’s likely how IKEA got the price down to $50. It’s not as portable as other Bluetooth speakers with built-in batteries, and they’re not really advertising it as such. (The bigger model doesn’t even support batteries at all, interestingly.)

    ,a company that does Synthetizers and other stuff related with Sound design!They did the OP-1 and the Pocket Operators and many more!!
    To play in Stereo theres another different model,you can buy one speacker with one sub woofer (FREKVENS)for 150 and for 60 you can buy the other speaker that way having a 2.1 system ;)

    There's no device that connects multiple devices at the same time.
    It's odd that IKEA makes you buy the battery separately. Not a very consumer-friendly strategy.
