Building a 7,000lb Welding Table for $600

  • Today we're putting together a massive and very flat 7,000 pound welding table on a budget with some heavy duty supports to replace the less-than-ideal table I've been using to weld. We're going to put some of my favorite tools to use in the process, like my HYDMECH band saw and the beautiful American Pacemaker and Clausing Colchester lathes, so come along and enjoy the ride with us.

    Sonny I am 72 years old and have been welding since the 70's. I have built everything from semi trailers, to pump jacks and even race cars including wheel standers and drag bikes. That is hands down the finest welding table I have ever seen or dreamed of. A lot of experts would say to me, what about this table or that table, nope, I've seen em all, I would choose yours over all of them.

    You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice czcams.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

    The traditional heavy equipment approach for the caster mounting plates is to mill a caster mounting flange pocket in the receiving caster plate. This way the caster mounting plate cannot move in shear, can be a rather large force if both the table and work piece are heavy. Also, the pocket helps to line up a new caster if a replacement is needed. If the caster receiving plate has a recessed pocket then you have many options for the caster bolts in terms of strength, meaning you can use SS locking (serrated) flange bolts. The misc. shelves many times are made using custom welded SS (304) sheet metal pans with raised edges to catch fluids and bottom strengthening stringers as an option, wood is combustible so is not used as part of the table build. The pans slot into the tables to keep them in place. SS pans clean up really well and are non-sparking.

    Save a lot if time by using the mag drill to drill the holes before you cut the plate. Plus the slugs make nice knobs with very little work in the lathe. The allo9wence for blade thickness is a little tricky for laying out the holes. most of the time I don't need that precession. I do the same with the metal muncher too. I tap punched holes with the impact wrench. I just add thickness to compensate for the lack of thread engagement.

    One idea on the threads into the plate is to turn the threads down to less than the minor diameter of the threads so you have a smooth consistent surface and then bore the hole into the plate with a 0.001" press. This does 2 things. It gives a tight fit and gives a shoulder on the threads to square it up to the plate and you can set the depth for the plug weld on the back side

    Sound solid strong. What a fixture table you have put together. Better than a Fireball Tool fixture table. But then having the top made would cost someone around ten grand more on its own. And all the clamps can be arranged any position at all. I thought you would use all thread or bolts with T nuts to weld up the trolley base, obviously I don't need to go into the circus as a mind reader!
    And as you noted the sheer size of it is as much as most jobs would ever need since you can overhang a bunch of the project and still utilise the flat fixture feature.

    • @VanoverMachineAndRepair
      @VanoverMachineAndRepair  Před rokem

      On some projects, I do use T-slot clamping. Having the other clamps is nice too they’re pretty convenient. The table is really nice but the fireball table would definitely be nicer. One downside of the table is in order to clamp some thing in the middle you have to slide the clamps from one side in. Can be a little bit of a pain if you have multiple things clamp down. One day when I get a mag drill I’ll drill clearance hole in the middle of the T slot so I can install the clamps halfway through the table.

    For the threaded rod, it might be overkill and more work (ie not needed), but if you had chosen to do threads in the plate, thread the rod into the threads, then weld it, could that have helped give you a better solid attachment to keep it from tilting while welding? Or I guess you could have cleaned off the threads in the lathe for the part that sticks into the plate and used that for the press fit. In either case I love watching your logic and work flow for projects, please keep up the good work. :)
