I lived in France and was married to a Frenchman for several years, which made me part of a French family. The reason Dior puts fragrance in its products is cultural. The French love "good" smells, whether it's food, the outdoors or, especially, toiletries. Anything you put on your skin has too have a fragrance, or something is considered to be missing. Years ago, chemists didn't know that frangrance could be sensitizing and the French populace got used to everything having a smell. Frenchmen, for example, use fragrance much more than Americans. Every man I knew when I lived in Paris had his own particular brand of eau de toilette, which he used daily. I don't like scent in makeup, either, but I've come to accept that it will take a few more decades for French manufacturers of luxury cosmetics to stop putting fragrance in everything. HTH.

Sue Whelan it is not only because dior is french in general that the brands perfume their product to mask the smell of ingredients and / or because it is a general decision. for example the shape tape concejales is perfumed and except error all products guerlain or st laurent also

from a perspective of marketing and branding, the scent is a a form of "identity"; so every time you smell that fragrance, you'll automatically think of a particular brand, in this case Dior.

*recognizes Dior fragrance immediately* "what could this possibly be for?"
I hate fragrance in face products myself but there is very obviously a reason for a legacy/designer product to smell distinctive.

WELL, it DOES do that. If I smell something overly perfumed that is strong and gives me a migraine, I automatically think of the awful stinky smell and how I would NEVER want anything like that. I guess it works, it does make me think of it. I just wish it WOULDN'T be because I might really like it if I could.

Excellent comparison! I hate fragrance in makeup. I find a lot of the French brands use heavy fragrance and it will keep me from buying some products. I love my MAC F&B. Too me it is pretty much perfect. But I do think the Dior has a place in my arsenal, just not for everyday. On me, the Dior is more makeupy (that's not a word LOL) where the MAC is lighter and fresher. Thank you for this and you look beautiful!

I’ve used MAC F&B for years and it’s very easy for me to use. I have dry skin and I don’t like a heavy coverage. It sounds like the Dior would be too matte for my dry skin. I actually don’t find the MAC formula to be that luminous, so I definitely wouldn’t want a more matte look. Thank you for this video.

Thanks to your in depth review and fueled by the recent hormone induced eruptions on my face I went for a color match at Sephora and bought a Dior face and body. Love love love it. It's very skin like. It moves with skin doesn't cake and looks amazing and smells beautiful.
    Two tips:
1- if your skin is sensitive to perfume avoid it. Though it's very mild scent and thankfully did no harm to me.
2- after you find your perfect match buy it in one shade lighter. Seems like after about 20 or 30 minutes it oxidizes and gets a shade darker. I was surprised because at the store it was a perfect match to my jawline and neck but when I got home half an hour later my face was visibly darker than my neck. So the next day I went back and exchanged it for a shade lighter.
I loved that they had the same color in neutral, gold and cool shades. I am middle eastern with very fair olive skin/ lots of gold undertone. I was so happy to find a perfect match especially given how golden/yellow undertone my skin can be.

I owe both products. I would also agree with her reviews. The MAC face & body foundation has a beautiful sheen look. For more coverage, Dior is the product to do the job. Also, the Dior has a heavier thicker feel on the face, but fleas leave a beautiful glow. MAC feels like I am not wearing any makeup and a more sheer look with a beautiful healthy glow. I think both products are great, but individually meet different beauty needs.

Mac face and body is bast in class for sheer foundations, there's nothing like it. There's a reason why it's used backstage at runway shows for the past 15+ years. Many makeup artists have it in their kit because it wears so well and is transfer proof, hydrates and smooths the skin. It's bomb

Glad I watched! I considered purchasing the Dior, but it’s a no go with the perfumed fragrance. It’s Dior, I should know better. I’m hyper-sensitive, resulting in headaches, and an overall unwell feeling. I miss out on Dior, Chanel, and so on because of this. It’s unnecessary and does not add to the products performance. Thank you ❤️

I actually was quite curious about this too, because I have both of them (C1 in MAC, 0N in Dior). I find the MAC one to get oily very quickly on my combo-oily skin and it’s sort of a dark shade with a good undertone, while Dior is all around VERY pasty on me and is a bit dry looking at first (I did try 1N, it’s too orange for me) and the fragrance is... a bit much. So I mixed them together on a candle lid and applied with my fingers, evened it all out with a sponge and it was beautiful! I can’t really say much on the longevity since I haven’t had it on for a good amount of time... but I’m sure it would last a bit longer than just MAC alone and yet not look so matte and dry like the Dior alone. And the shade actually is pretty good I would say! My husband thinks it looks a little pale, but honestly... I’m trying out so many bases and the color changes so much that I don’t think he really even knows what actually is better for me 😂 Also tones down the pungent fragrance of Dior. Just a second opinion if anyone else was curious!

I AGREE with you about the PERFUME in FACE (makeup and skin care) products!! I get HORRIBLE migraines and cluster headaches from perfume so it doesn't matter how great the product is I could NEVER use it. WHY do they make a great product and then make it so repulsively scented?? I wanted to try the L'Oreal Fresh foundation but I heard that stinks too. Pisses me off , that stuff has NO reason, benefit or business in things you use on your skin, near your eyes or under your nose! Perfume face products also make the eyes burn and cause skin irritations and allergies. I REALLY wish cosmetic makers would GET it. If they WANT it to smell like you are splashing perfume on the face for the European buyer, they should at least offer an UNPERFUMED version for the rest of the world.

If I want more coverage and a satin to matte finish I use a drop of Argan oil underneath Estée Lauder Double Wear which has no alcohol or fragrances in it. Never irritates, looks great.

I would try Dior, for those days when I want a demi matte finish. Great vid. 😊

But the alcohol along with the fragrances is what makes it a thumbs down foundation especially for everyday

Shelby, what’s your favorite? Mac face and body or bare minerals complexion rescue tinted moisturizer?

I wish it didn't have a fragrance the dior sounds like it would be better for my combo skin. It's just that I'm sensitive to scents 😔. Specially since I'm pregnant I can't handle fragrance at all. I use to be able to get away with some products having fragrance, but right now not even a little. If it's true that a lot of people from France are use to all their products having Fragrance I wonder how some pregnant women would not get sick of smelling certain scents. It would be too overwhelming to me.

Great review. I want to try both now for the uses you have stated. I have more mature combo skin. Which one would you recommend to try first? Any suggestions on selecting shade? I am neutral with a little pink and yellow undertones make me look super yellow. Thank you

    • @ShelbeyWilson
      @ShelbeyWilson  Před 6 lety +2

I would say either! Dior will be more mattifying for you and MAC will have more of a glow. Just stay away from the "W" shades in Dior and "C" shades in Mac Face and Body if you want to avoid yellow tones!

I don't like fragranced products either. Especially in foundation. I also don't get why certain companies make fragranced bronzer and eyeshadow..

Is there much of a shade difference between Mac F&B C2 and Dior in 2W? I was able to look at the MAC foundation in the store and C2 looked like a good match but anything darker than that would probably not work :/

This foundation sounds beautiful besides the point that it has fragrance. Why put fragrance in something that's going to go on your SKIN?! I would've totally bought it if it weren't for that. Fragrance in foundations give me a really bad headache.

I don't mind a lotion/fresh sent and I really love anything coconut scented (I just tried a sample of the too faced RX mist and holy crap it smells so good) but I CANNOT stand rose smelling products. It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Mac face and body is meant to be warmed up in the hands til it’s tacky then it’s ready to be applied to the face/body

  • @saragiannini-andres6170

So I sweat a lot in the summer only on my face bc I have thick curly hair. I love the Dior but the fragrance does bother me but it does last really well. I want to try the Mac face and body but is it really waterproof and sweatproof???

Don’t go to a brand ‘who is known for fragrance’ and get makeup or skin care. Thank you for giving information on fragrance or no fragrance in makeup. I can’t tolerate fragrance and had been holding off on this because I just knew it would smell and reek.
